Yeah, but it was leaked in drivers first, so their wording is correct, even though I agree they could have updated it by now.

Does anyone know when AMD/ATI are going to have the equivalent to the Nvida Optimus technology to allow switching between the Integrated HD 3000 on the SB chips and a discrete graphics card?

The on-board HD 3000 doesn't sound too shabby and since it's completely disabled on the HP units, one has to wonder how much extra battery life could be obtained by utilizing it.

Review Intel HD Graphics 3000 graphics solution - Notebookcheck.net Reviews

"The performance of the Intel HD Graphics 3000 can indeed be called impressive. In many older and current gaming titles it competes at a level of entry-level graphics cards like the Geforce G 310M, the GT 220M or the ATI HD5470. It multiplies the performance of the previous Intel GMA HD solution. In practice this means that older games can be played at high graphics settings and current games mostly at low graphics details."

What? It's disabled? Well that kinda beats the whole point of waiting for SB then, if the discrete GPU is going to drain battery no matter what you're doing.

From what I can tell so far, switchable graphics are only available when an nVidia discrete graphics solution is used. AMD/ATI do not yet have that capability. Folks, please correct me if I'm wrong...

    The notebookcheck chart is wrong.
    I tested ati 5870(asus G73),5830 (envy 15-1150es),4830(envy 15-1050es),5730(asus N61jq),5650(acer 5740G),4670(Studio Xps16),4650(asus M60vp,Dell Studio 1747),etc
    And now tested HD6570 GDDR5.

    My experience:
    Ati 5870 - 13200 pts 3dmark06
Ati 5830-4830-5730 = 8000/8200 pts (all the same score)
    Ati 6570 = 10200 pts (with OC 700/950 11300pts)
    Ati 5650-4670 = 7400 pts

    Other example - Test RE5
Ati 5830 -62fps (position 50º in notebookcheck chart)
Ati 6570 -72fps (position 59º in notebookcheck chart)
    Ati 6570 with OC 675/900 - 80,9fps

Did over clocking the HD6570 increase the temperature?
    Is it with i7-2630 processor?

HD6570 with default clocks about 72ºC max (3dmark06-10200pts, Test RE5-72fps)
    HD6570 with Oc 700/900, about 75-76ºC max (3dmark06-11300pts, Test RE5-82fps)

Thanks for posting this - this is good stuff. It's nice to see that GDDR5 makes such a big difference on performance.

Which drivers did you use for the test?

With these kind of results would it even be worth buying the sandy bridge envy 17, considering that it uses a re branded 5850 (the 6850)?

It seems to me like the envy isn't really going to be a luxury brand compared to the dv7.

It still features double the amount of shaders (800 compared to 400)
The compairison is not really correct, he is testing those cards with different CPU's.
Considering gen 1 i7 were @ turbo around 1.8-2.0ghz, he tested the 6570M with 2.6ghz.
    I can also have 10k with my 4830M oc'ed
Nonetheless it should be on level of the 5830M, but not 5850M/6850M

In Spain all the envys 15 come with i7 720QM.
    And, of course, i tested with i7 720qm + ati 5830.

In other games the difference just is 4-5 fps, but always is better the Hd6570 (sorry my bad english)

With my atis 4830 & 5830 with OC never arrive to 10000pts.
In Re5 the Ati 5830 have the same fps avg to Asus N61JQ with i7 720qm+Ati 5730. (with the same drivers and default clocks)

No, I have Envy 17 (about 2 weeks in my home).
The Ati 5850 GDDR5 is better to Hd6570.

The ati Envy´s ati 5850 run to 500/1000 , and with i7 720qm the 3dmarko6 score is about 11800pts/12000, and the Ati HD6850 GDDR5 is the same renamed GPU.

But is probably better to Ati 5850 GDDR3 (about 9000pts)

    The ati HD6570 is betwen Ati 5850/6850 GDDR5 and 5850/6850 GDDR3

i think you might be testing with different resolutions?

especially if you are looking at 1280x768 vs 1900x1080 or something...?

that is quite amazing then - that the 6570 performs better than 5830.
althought it'd be helpful to post the CPU score for each of those to control for the difference caused by CPU.

as far as i know, the SB CPU gets about 500 more points than your average gen 1 i7.

The ati 5830 is only in the envy 15, and their clocks are only 500/800.
Try to apply OC, but soon displayed artifacts.

i7 2630qm is better to i7 720QM , but this is only noticeable in synthetic benchmarks and not significantly.

(in 3dmark06 cpu´s score are about 3300pts for i7 720qm,and about 5500pts whit i7 2630qm, but the overall score is the same)

In games (as in Re5 ttest) all the weight goes to the GPU.

Hi. I'm new here. Have just bought the HP DV7-5090eo. I wonder two things really.
This PC has HD 6570, but it is 5730 that is quoted in AIDA64 Extreme Edition.
Which driver should be installed, the HP or 5000 series from ATI?

Question number two. There is room for two hard drives. Have a ssd drive to be installed, but there was no cable. It was not a caddy for the hard disk number two. Who sells these things?

Sorry for my bad English. I'm from Norway. hehe

    1. ATI has yet to release the driver for the 6570. Use the hp driver which came with the laptop.

    2. You can buy the HD kit from HP which consists of the Sata wiring and the caddy. I bought the HP HD kit here:

NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks

Be sure to look for the DV7-4000 model caddy. I think they ship internationally.

Do you think 6570 is much better than my old 8800/9800gts?
I got ~8700 in 3damark06 @1280x1024 (it is ~9300in lower res.) But I have very weak cpu. My cpu score is ~2300 compare to i7 2630qm ~5500

    With T9300 @2.7ghz is ~9800 @1280x1024.

I wonder if maybe better choice is 5850.

ude.... thanks so much for all your work. You may have helped me out a ton here. I recently got a New Dv7 with the Sandybridge 2720 Processor / 8GB DDR3 ram /7200 RPM HD / and the Radeon HD6570 with DDR5 1GB. I got 9811 in 3d Mark 06 with stock HP drivers that I believe are not fully optimized for that card yet.

I was bummed about the recall and I know HP will honor the recall and replace the laptop like Toshiba has done. I was just mad that I have to wait until March to get the new silicon so I was considering getting an HP Envy for $1249 from Newegg.

However I was able to pick up the Dv7 from HP with a $500 off coupon for $909 !!!!! I mean thats a steal for all that I got including the newest Intel chip.

But I think your right the 6570 will have great performance on a 1600 X 900 screen vs the 5850 on 1920X 1200 with maybe DDr3 Vram?...I mean Newegg does not say if its ddr3 or ddr5. Dont want to chance it... ..

    Thanks again,

It's not currently known if the Spring 2011 refresh of the dv7 will have a backlit keyboard.

Looking at this new dv6 and dv7 Intel refresh, these new notebooks will feature the following graphics configurations (looks like switchable graphics is back too):

    Code:
    [B]PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_6760= "AMD Radeon HD 6470M"
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_0116= "Mobile Intel(R) HD Graphics"

Looks like the same Dv7-4290 configuration (b3 updated hopefully), and full hd 3d display with glasses and backlit keyboard and adobe photoshop elements that you can't remove, for $1599 base price. (you do have less hdd space at the base config though)

Hi, any DV6 quad core owners here with AMD 6770 graphics? I was wondering if HP's claimed battery life of 5.75 hours is realistic with these specs:

    • 2nd generation Intel(R) Quad Core(TM) i7-2720QM (2.2 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) w/Turbo Boost up to 3.3 GHz
    • 1GB Radeon(TM) HD 6770M GDDR5 Graphics [HDMI, VGA]
    • FREE Upgrade to 6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 640GB 7200RPM Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
High Capacity 6-Cell Lithium-Ion Battery (standard) - Up to 5.75 hours of battery life +++
    • 15.6" diagonal High Definition HP BrightView LED Display (1366x768)
    • Blu-ray player & Lightscribe SuperMulti DVD burner
    • HP TrueVision HD Webcam with Integrated Digital Microphone and HP SimplePass Fingerprint Reader
    • Intel 802.11b/g/n WLAN
    • Standard Keyboard

Thanks! If it can do 3 hours that would be fine, while doing some browsing, possibly having music playing.

Also; does anyone runs these as desktop replacements? I guess I could hook up a mouse, a keyboard, my HDMI capable Monitor? And other stuff like external HDD, Game controller and whatnot, probably requires a USB Hub of sorts, any experience with those?

yes absolutely! ... and that display is gorgeous 400-nits of brightness and full 72% color gamut. just to be precise here, I'm not yet convinced that you really get '120 Hz' in the way that this implies. 120Hz is required for 3D to work, and the GPU utilizes this to synchronize the glasses with the displayed image (image 1 left eye, image 2 right eye...). thats what requires a 120 Hz display.

we'll have to see if 120 Hz is one of the display properties that can actually be chosen (along with 60 Hz or 75 Hz or whatever). Love to be wrong on this one, but I have my doubts. we shall soon know!

No way you'll get 5.75 hours with 6-cell. I am running a less powerful gpu and hardly ever get over 3 hours with a 9-cell. The advertised values are calculated under certain lab-conditions with minimal load and they never replicate real work. Notice the qualifier "up to." In real life you won't reach that elusive dream.

To run as a desktop, you may consider some kind of docking system, either commercial or self improvised, so that you can do quick changes without a lot of cords to deal with. I know HP sells docking stations but you can probably put one together on your own for much less. Make sure you use a powered hub to ensure adequate juice to the peripherals.

For those that have your d7v quad in your hands and only ordered 1 drive. Does it have another slot for another drive. Someone was telling me they use a different case for once that are only ordered with one drive that doesn't have an extra slot which i find VERY unlikely but wanted to ask here to make sure.

It does have room for a SSD but not another full size HDD, unless you only have a SSD in there now.

Could you explain that a bit more?

Is a different cage used or something? I see that two HDD's are factory option...but if I only order one HDD....and want to install a second HDD at a later time...I can't use the factory cage?

    Sorry, yes.

Later if you want to put another HDD into the computer you absolutely can. If you end up putting in a SSD you'll need:
Hard Drive Hardware Kit (not illustrated, includes bracket, connector cable, Mylar
    shield, and screws) (641306-00)

Otherwise, you are free to install another HDD!

    Sorry, Paul, I'm still unclear.
You seem to be differentiating between ability to mount a SSD and a HDD. Is that because HP uses 2.5" HDD and 1.8" SDD?

    Assume I buy a DV7TQE with 640GB/7200rpm.

Does it have hardware to mount a 2nd drive in it already?
    If so, 1.8" or 2.5"?
Is the second drive cable there too?

Assume I buy a 641306-00, what do I get in that kit?
EDIT: Was that P/N supposed to be 641306-001?
Two drive bays that replace my existing mounting hardware?
One drive bay that supplements my existing mounting hardware?
What size are the bays, 1.8", 2.5", one of each?

I'd love it if you could tell me that I can add a 2.5" secondary drive to my DV7 without buying anything else.

It already has the hardware to mount a 2.5" HDD except the cable, if you want a SSD you have to buy the kit. You would need to buy the kit for the cable because a second one is not in there even for the HDD :(

If I haven't quite touched on what you mean, I apologize, feel free to PM me with more questions or clarifications.
