How are the switchable graphics on these new laptops? Seemless even if not auto? Don't mind manual conversions.

Does one need to use custom HP graphics drivers for the AMD GPUs? I don't want to wait for HP to upgrade their drivers.

Depends on the laptop, but most sport the AMD Vision System if you configure it right, which means you can use AMD drivers.

Switchable graphics are fluid, however you can manually turn them on or off from the bios.

Brand new computer ordered 3/15/11 just received today with FAULTY CHIPSET, see attached. Unbelievable, this is not a fix (not using the affected ports). This nice looking computer with faulty chipset will be RETURNED IMMEDIATELY and I would AVOID HP at all costs is my opinion for trying to ship these.

Wow!!! What is HP think they are doing? Probably just used the 2 Sata ports for the HD and and the DVD/BD player. 04 is B2 and 09 is B3 stepping I think.

Nope, the optical drive (Superdrive no BD/lightscribe) is connected to PORT 5 as per the Intel Rapid Storage utility, so they didn't even bother to connect it to a 'supposedly' unaffected port (port 1), they didn't do anything but ship the B2 Cougar Point as is, knowing that my optical drive transfer rates would degrade over time. I call Bunk! I wasted a lot of time on this thing and they held my money for over a month, do I have some recourse?

I also returned my DV7 SB with the bad chipset and lost my $500 coupon during the process. My BD was connected to the port 5 also. HD to port 1. I would wait for a while longer before ordering so the B2 is completely out of inventory. I think Intel told HP it's OK to ship the B2 chipset as long as only 2 SATA devices are connected , they mean 1 and 2 ports.

I received the email from HP yesterday about the Intel Chip problem in my dv7-4290us.

I took the return for replacement option so they will be sending me a dv7-4295us to replace the 4290. The only real spec. difference is the 4295 has 8GB of memory vs. the 6GB in the 4290.

It order for you to receive the 4295 without paying the $100 difference in price you will need to talk to a supervisor. Also you can get them to send you the new laptop and allow you N days to transfer your files and then return the old laptop.

Although it took about 2 hours on the phone to get them to do this I would highly suggest that everyone follow this or a similar procedure and I hope you will enjoy the new laptop.

All-in-All I think this is a 'Good' handling of the problem by HP!

Good Luck, as always your mileage may vary in dealing with the CSR's but once you get to a supervisor you should be set.

    :)

Isn't the chipset in your machine the same as ripwind found in his to be B3?

    DeviceID
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1C03&SUBSYS_1657103C&REV_04\3&11583659&0&FA

CPU-Z will determine that for you as well. Look at the post by MacClipper

daf323, Could you tell me if the first 3 numeric digits in your serial number are 108 are higher--Since HP says these machines do not have the problem. I just received a dv7-4295us as a replacement for a 4290.

    Thank You

I considering an Envy 17 (Sandy bridge version only). The biggest complaint I've read about for that model is excessive heat and fan noise.

What sort of impression do people have of this? Are the Sandy Bridge models better with regard to heat and noise?

For all of you students out there in this forum talking about getting either a DV6t Quad or DV7t Quad

    Intel i7 2630
    Free Ram upgrade to 8gig
    1 gig GDDR5 graphics
750 hdd (but i would go with the 640 7200 RPM)

Up to 30% off DV7t Quad edition w/ coupon starts at $883
    Intel i7 2630
    Free Blu-ray upgrade
    Free Ram upgrade to 8gig

    Hello,

The process for properly determining if your HP PC is affected is at: Intel® Chipset Design Issue May Affect Certain HP Desktop and Notebook PCs - HP Customer Care (United States - English).

For HP desktop and notebook PCs, a combination of the serial number and Microsoft® Windows® Device Manager must be used to properly determine if an HP PC is affected.

HP PCs shipped beginning March 2011 are not affected by this issue.

For this specific issue, applications and tools designed to report the chipset stepping may not properly report the chipset Revision ID (stepping information). As an example: B3 may be reported as B2.

The Intel website about this chipset matter contains the important disclaimer below:
“Note: Tools/applications designed to report the Intel® 6 Series Chipset Stepping Revision may not properly report stepping information due to system specific BIOS configurations.”
Source: Solution for the Intel Series 6 Chipset Design Error (scroll to the “note” at the bottom of the page)

I've had the dv7-4295us replacement for a 4290 for about a week now and so far I'm happy with the replacement the only issue I had with the 4290 was in setting up the HP USB TV Tuner which was not an issue with the 4295. I did notice one odd thing though on the 4295 the Windows experience rating is 5.8 vs. the 4290's 5.9 (both have 1TB 5400 rpm disks as the lowest rated item)

How is the fan noise on the Sandy Bridge dv7's? I plan on purchasing one with a 6770 and 2720.

I would say quiet but only slightly different from the dv7-2nnn and the dv7-3nnn I also have. Now compared to my first 17inch laptops Compaq X6000/HP ZD8000 (P4’s in the laptop) it is much quieter
In case you are curious the DV7-2nnn replaced the X6000 which died (LCD display issue) about 15 months ago.
The DV7-3nnn replaced the ZD8000 which is still running and has been given to my 3rd grader for computer work at home.

Hey guys, just recieved my new i7 dv6t

my wireless keeps dropping and reconnecting, which is odd since on my iphone4 and hp 2730p i've never had drops. Is this a known problem with the dv6t wireless?

and everytime i plug in the power, it asks if I want to swap graphics mode/card. Is there a way to disable this and just use the integrated graphics?

Are there any other issues with the dv6t that I should look out for?

So far its a pretty good laptop.

I ordered a DV7T Quad Edition in January. I subsequently recieved a recall notice regarding the Intel chipset.

I called HP on May 14 to return the unit. The representative explained 1) she could NOT issue a refund in any way, as these could pnly be done by case managers, and 2) I would have to wait until a case manager called me back. When I expressed concern that the case manager would call me back after the May 15th deadline, she exaplined that 1) since I called on May 14, I could still get the refund, and 2) ther deadline was extended to May 31.

I received a call from a case manger "Leonard" on the 16th, who explained that he could not issue a refund or even a replacement, as the deadline as passed. He indicated he heard a similar story from another customer being told about the May 31 deadline, but would still not issue a rufund on my case. He said the supervisors were busy running a business, and would not transfer me to his supervisor.

This is clearly unethical business practice. I called within the deadline, and HP refused to process my refund.

How much time elapsed between when you received your recall notice and when you got around to calling.

Hi guys, I'm new here. I just bought a Pavilion dv6070 (i7 2630qm, ati 6770M, chipset HM65) and I realized there was a problem with series 6 chipsets.
After doing some research I've tried what daf323 did with the same results as in his photo. I've also used CPU-Z and it says Rev. B2.
BUT, I've also read in hp that if your 4th to 6th numbers in your serial number are higher than 108, then no problems with that laptop. My 4th to 6th numbers are 115, so I don't know what to think.
Is the laptop faulty or not?

Thank you so much in advance guys.

Give HP a call and discuss your sn with them. They know when the SN numbers were assigned and when the unit was built and if the unit has the recalled chipset.

Can anyone confirm if DV7-4295US has HDMI 1.4 port?

    Or it is 1.3?

    Thanks
