SSD + Intel graphics == SILENCE!
I noticed, when I put the 640GB 7200rpm back in the computer before I returned it, how "noisy" a laptop hard drive was.
The computer is very fast which makes the hard drive even more of a bottleneck, not less. A good 6Gbps SSD makes this great performing computer an outstanding performer. I had quite a few startup items and a system restart from "Desktop to Desktop" was about 25 seconds. That included me swiping my fingerprint for logon.

i dont know if this is the right place to post{new here,1st post}...
i planning to get a HP DV6-6017tx
its has core i7 proc, 4 gb single channel ddr3 1333 ram, 500gb 5200rpm hdd, 15.6" display and ati HD6770 raedon gpu...
now my problem is i am going to use it as desktop relpacement and i am really worried about overheating issues....does it overheat a lot? -
If you live in the USA, use the coupon code NB6171 to take off 30% of the final price. The base config + the 6770M graphics card + the 1080p screen + the coupon comes out to a final price of $927. -

1,is 720p screen bad?should i wait?
2,and what about heating issues?
3,i see many people here talking about returning their notebooks, whats the problem? -
-
imho screen is good. unless you have a perfect eyes you won't see dots and other things which comes from low resolution. + low resolution is a good plus for gaming since load to gpu is lower.
heat? few hours in bulletstorm and cpu is 90 and gpu 80. Will buy cooling pad.
I wonder where can i get good and cheap 128gb ssd?) -
2.) I dont think anyone is really experiencing any heating issues on the new model.
3.) Everyone is returning because they all want the 1080p screen and ordered just before is came out on the 18th. And they are also returning because they are offering free blue ray now on top of that. -
Is anyone experiencing Wifi problems ?
I don't know if it's my Wifi card or my connection but when i'm on wifi i sometimes gets d/c and if at this moment i just turn it off and plug in the ethernet cable, everything's fine.
I updated my drivers and it still happens. -

Do you have other laptops or devices with WIFI built in? Are they having problems keeping a sustained connection to your router? I have seen many routers start to fail after a year of 24x7 operation. You could always buy a new router at a local retailer and take it back if it does not fix the problem.

Would anyone be kind enough to upload a picture of the power brick please?

720p was launched here on 20th april at $1170 US dollars(approx)...
BTW i reside in india and really looking forward to buy this laptop..... -
I have a question. Does everyone have the same horrible subwoofer I do, and the front speakers are barely audible? I mean why put the subwoofer there, even at full bass and a bass song, it performs less than a pc speaker (yes the old one).
Or is something wrong with my settings, I have the latest drivers, so that shouldnt be a issue.
Oh yes I have a Dv7 quad 6001sg, it has a black finish, idk where they got it from but specs are same as yours :=) -

Everything else was great. Very fast, no noticeable heat issues, etc. -
Now that I picked up a virgin drive, I did a complete clean install using the Minimized Image Recovery option. There is absolutely no bloatware installed with the minimized recovery. In fact there were several things missing that weren't necessarily bloatware. All of the Windows Live stuff was gone as well as the Cyberlink DVD.
I went back and did this to perform selective installation of some of the programs InstallDriversApplications.
This clean install has solved so many of my issues.
- The machine is faster
- All of my graphics switching issues with admin and non-admin accounts are now all gone
- No more CCC.exe crash messages either

OK I have no permission to change 'thread title' but only first post.
I dunno why admin changed it to MSI things lol but I will PM him. -
It's a stealth operation. The Quad Editions are gaining too much popularity

Thread title fixed.
The Deals bot must be acting up, because it's inadvertently changing the titles of threads (yes, it's happened before).

So it looks like the free X-box offer is now open here: Microsoft Store Online - Welcome
Has anyone tried applying both the 30% off and x-box promotion code to see if they're stackable? If they are, it makes a screaming deal even better! -

As for the dv6tqe/dv6tqe this has been really beaten into the ground by a few of us students/faculty who ordered this early. The rehearsed and disorganized answers from HP basically say this only applies for phone orders and is a coupon code that they apply which negates any other coupon code (like the 30% off one).
That all being said, if the 30% off dies or you're configuring a BASE model dv6tqe the APP (students discount) discount with $150 instant rebate and xbox might be a decent deal for you. That totals to about $400 which could be a decent deal. For me, I received $448 with the 30% coupon alone plus 3.6% with FW ($38ish which isn't available via phone order). There is a chance that by phone haggling you can also get another $100 discounted as a back-end credit (a refund to your credit card upon receipt of laptop) as this is about the 10% that HP reps are normally authorized to give as ordering incentives/apologies.
I know that's complicated, but as far as I see it its really only worth it at the bottom of the configuration range and only if you really value the xbox as giving you $200 worth of utility. That's a semi-fixed asset as opposed to the liquidity of cold hard cash in your wallet.
I will say that by expressing my disappointment that I wasn't able to take advantage of the Xbox offer I received a $50 back-end credit. Two others on these boards managed to sweet talk themselves into a $100 back-end credit, but others (like myself) found that impossible. Whatever the case, this is still a great laptop for the price. -
Does that mean you can have more than one system/hard drive running off one disc/license? -

Hello guys,
I'm new to this forum I just found it while looking for information about my recently purchased DV6T-4000 laptop.
It hasn't arrived yet but I was wondering if any of you could anticipate if I should be worried about the whole chipset stepping crap.
Anyone here has this model? Is it a B3 or could it be the deffective B2 stepping?
The specs are
i7-2630QM
AMD HD6570M GDDR5
6GB RAM
750GB HDD
Thanks, and sorry if this has already been discussed, but this thread has over 500 pages! -
um this is the wrong thread for you. You're in the 4000's this is the 6000 series.

What are your experiences with that laptop? Pros? cons? I was recommended to get one of those. -
Interesting observation on operating temps.
Room temp 68°F.
dv7tqe, running WEI while sitting on a cooling pad with the fan turned up high, Coolsense set for maximum performance. Core 1 hit 81°C, then cooled down into the 60s by the time the tests were complete.
G72, P6100 dual core, ran WEI while sitting on a pile of laundry. Core 0 hit a max of 55°C, at a maximum CPU load of 25.00 watts.
It should also be noted that the WEI numbers were a LOT higher on the dv7tqe.
Low score on the G72 was 3.9 for graphics. Low score on the dv7 was 6.9 for graphics.
High score on the G72 was 5.9 for hard drive. High score on the dv7 was 7.6 for memory.
Except for input (the keyboard/touchpad on the dv7-6xxx are far ahead of the G72), coding videos and running games, the G72 seems to be the better computer for most of my usage. Cooler running, longer battery life, same screen, half the price, 1/2lb less weight. I just wish it had the dv7's keyboard. -
I was never a HP fan until I got an envy 14 (have used dell, toshiba, sony, emachine), and then decided to return that in favor of the $500 coupon (had a $400 coupon) on the sandy bridge dv6t-4000 in January (hard decision, as at the same time there was a $500 coupon for the envy 14 along with the brief return of the radiance screen).
Last week I got a new dv6t-6000 and shipped back the dv6t-4000 with the defective cougar point chipset, and now yet placed another order (going to return the current one) for yet another dv6t-6000 with 1080p screen.
Temperature wise, Envy 14 with i5-580m was the coolest - didn't feel warm at all and maxed out at around 82C in prime95. Next comes the current gen dv6t-6000 with 2720qm - while the laptop actually feels cooler than the envy, maxes out at about 86C in prime95 (for comparison, MBP15 with same 2720qm went all the up to 99C). The dv6t-4000 ran hot, felt hot, and is hot - maxing out at about 96C.
Build quality of the envy was obviously very nice, felt solid. Dv6t-4000, though also had metal finish, felt cheap in comparison. The aluminum top cover and screen cover felt like a thick sheet of aluminum foil rather than a plate of metal, as in it sounds plastic when you tap it, and you almost feel like you can peel it right off. The current gen dv6t-6000 feels quite nice. Aside from the flimsy silvery plastic surrounding the front and sides of the laptop, it feels quite solid, almost up to the envy level.
Okay if I were to name you every single good thing about this laptop I'm never going to finish preparing for my labmeeting tomorrow... So I'm just going to tell you what I wasn't impressed with instead.
1) I dislike the buttons on the touchpad. I'm probably singled out on this issue, but I prefer the old touchpad with no distinct buttons. With Reil's touchpad app, it is absolutely flawless and can match Macbook Pro's touchpad (Single tap, double tap and hold to drag, two finger tap to right click, flawless inertial two finger scroll, etc etc etc... Most people are just too ignorant/lazy to actually look around to make lemon into lemonade).
2) No backlit keyboard. I had it on the envy 14, and it was very pretty and cool (and only marginally useful). After having a laptop for about a week, you SHOULD know where all the keys are by feel. However there is no doubt that in the backlit keyboard looks very professional and awesome. But, to me, backlit keyboard should never be a necessity unless you are so unfamiliar with computers that you still need too look at the keyboard when you are typing. Not to mention, in the dark the keys are actually visible from just the light from the screen.
3) Might be a setting issue, but Beats audio does not sound as good on the dv6t as it did in the Envy 14.
4) Hard-to-open optical drive... I have to use my fingernail to press the button to get it open (or use eject function).
5) VERY ANNOYING - The laptop remembers the fact that you pressed fn until you press a key that fn can work with to reset it. For example, you are gaming and accidentally hit fn instead of ctrl, it will seem normal (i.e. you press ctrl again and move on) until you press something like "B", in which case instead of doing what pressing B is supposed to do, it toggles Beats audio instead. You'll see what I mean if you try it yourself.
6) Arrow keys take a while to get used to. Instead I made an autohotkey script that remaps numpad 5 when numlock is off to down arrow.
7) Not a problem with most people, but I like to keep my windows on one partition and personal data on a different partition. However the laptop comes with 4 primary partitions already (200mb useless System, main C:\ partition, hp_tools and RECOVERY), and making one more partition would change the disk from basic to dynamic (and bringing out a whole bunch of pointless complications). Instead I used GParted to 1) delete the 200mb System partition, 2) shrink the C: partition down to about 40gb, 3) move that partition to the beginning of the drive, 4) extend that partition to whatever size you want (I did 200GB), and 5) create a data partition from the empty space. Now using Windows 7 Recovery Disc (can be created from windows), I recover the boot record to the C:\ partition. The final product is a working windows partition, data partition, and still functional RECOVERY and hp_tools partition if I ever decided to do a factory restore.
Overall, most of these problems are minor annoyances that can be overcome one way or another. Especially at the prices you can get (with the coupons), the dv6t/7t is by FAR the best deal on the market for these kinds of laptops. My dv6t was $920 plus $82 tax, and it will have better performance than a $2200 Macbook pro (1699 3DMark11 vs. 1370 on MBP), equal battery life (6-6.5 hrs of video playback on MAX brightness with background download using the 9-cell battery), similar form factor (obviously not with the 9-cell attached, but I do actually prefer the 9-cell now despite being quite reserved about the extra bump. It helps the ergonomics of typing, sound projection, and better cooling), and (hopefully) has a better screen. -
Got mine today. Vantage P6512 right out of the box.

I installed a Crucial C300 256gb SSD + its latest firmware today. Windows Experience Index for hard disk jumped from 5.9 to 7.9, and overall temperature of the laptop dropped about 4-7ºC (the seagate HDD gets pretty warm). Vibration and noise are almost non-existent.
Battery increased by about 30 minutes (originally 5:45 from a full charge, now 6:20, if you believe this number is remotely accurate). Weight is light as a feather compared to the seagate HDD (I thought I got hoaxed and received an empty box from Fedex this morning).
Overall extremely happy, and recommend a Crucial SSD to anyone who owns this laptop. -

Here's a Windows 7 gadget I use...
Download Ejection 1.0 Free - This Vista gadget will allow you to easily eject or load your computer's CD tray from your desktop or sidebar - Softpedia
Download it and change the file extension from zip to gadget, then double-click it to install an eject button on your Desktop. -
finally pulled the trigger on the dv6tqe, estimated build date june 2!
In the mean time, anybody know of a good sleeve that fits well? most of the ones i'm finding online seem to be too big front-to-back. -
Look out for deals on ebay. I got the Crucial brand new for $385 (normally $450). My machine, including the SSD, cost a total of $1150. (which easily trumps any other machine at the same price). Forgot to mention battery increased by about 30 minutes, if you believe the Windows battery monitor to be accurate.
