    Yeah. Good point.

    I get beautiful sound using cheapo Skull Candy earbuds...Just wish the mid-range drivers on the over-hyped sound system had a wider range of frequency response.

    They could have done a lot more than add two more speakers and put "BeatsAudio" on the case. Imho, I don't think the actual Beats headphones sound all that great.

    Never heard them. I used to like my Koss Porta Pro's until I bought the Bose QC 15's this year. MUCH better fidelity (and I am no Bose fan, but they did a great job on the QC15's) Flying is more restful now--not hearing the drone of the engines is wonderful.

    Exactly. You don't need some "big name" artist/producer guy's name on something for them to be good. It's all marketing and it hurts the quality of the product, honestly.
    I have a pair of Monster Turbines, got them for $60 on eBay and they are the best headphones I've ever listened to.

    The Dv7 just arrive this morning and I just got back in town last night. Couldnt have planned it any better. First off it did come in the Silver finish that I think most of you are talkiing about. I think it looks more like Bronze though. My last one was the dark umber color and this is so much better than that I think I would have paid extra to have this finish. Not that the dark umber was bad or anything but this is more to my taste and it doesnt seem to be the fingerprint magnet that the other one was. My reason for sending the old umit back was primarily due to the screen upgrade and let me tell you it was well worth it! This screen is beautiful. Played some 1080P clips and it is fantastic. I couldnt ask for any better. Heari all the complaints about the speakers I just dont get it. I think they are fine for a laptop. Most laptop speakers are so much worse than these that there is no comparison. I have no issues at all with the notebook at this time but I have only just got it and have not used it much at all. I am thus far extremely pleased with it and can say that the build quality seems absolutely perfect. For the price of this unit it is hard to believe that HP can give you the state of the art tech that is in this thing. I think they just blow other brands out of the water. I plan to do the minimal install and upgrade to SSD but have not decided which one to buy yet. Probably a 120 gig size though. Anyone know if the second drive bay cable is available yet as a stand alone purchase?

    Congrats on the DV7T! Most of the posts are referring to the DV6T speakers. I think the DV7T uses a slightly different config, since it has more size. Personally, I also think the DV7T sound quality is acceptable based on laptop standards. FWIW, it's better than the G73SW I heard, which has notoriously sub-par sound, yet gamers still love it! That said, the DV7T is still lacking in the mid-bass and lower frequencies, but I have yet to hear a laptop that wasn't! Mid to high frequencies are very good though. It's among the better laptops I've heard, but not anywhere near on par with reference quality sound from a dedicated setup. For small drivers though, it certainly can put out some serious dBs before it starts to distort.

    The SATA cable for a second drive is starting to be manufactured by 3rd parties, so hopefully it will be available soon. One vendor has it showing as available by June 7, http://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=379&zenid=307ddece3ee993420e49e45fceac1d9e, but pricing was still pretty high. I'll probably hold out a few months before I take the plunge and order an SSD myself. I'm leaning toward the Crucial 128gb M4 at the moment, but will evaluate the landscape again when I'm ready to order.

    Darkrider - do you happen to know which executables I need to manually add for 3DMark Vantage? It keeps benchmarking my integrated card, and not my Radeon. I did enable the ones that showed up on CCC, but based on your account, it looks like i need to add a couple more =)

    If you ordered it recently (within the last 2-3 weeks) you'll get a 6100, if you ordered before that it'll be a 6000

    POI (point of interest) for all you dv6/7 owners out there. Beats Audio actually really only refers to the audio processing out the headphone jack. Straight from the horse's mouth I watched a youtube video of an HP Marketing manager characterize the beats audio as "from the headphone jack". Adding two extra speakers was just their throw-away...'sure lets toss that in' and isn't to be taken as part of the "Beats Audio" package. All of the HP beats audio promo lit and vids characterize it as coming from the headphone jack.

    What you get:
    1. No metal parts for the audio jack reducing any grounding static
    2. Isolated ground and L/R audio signal to increase fidelity ("to the headphone jack")
    3. Isolated on-board "audio island" for audio processing to reduce background noise from the CPU, GPU, and other electrical noise.

    That said, the sound is INCREDIBLE with any decent set of headphones or earbuds and noticeably better than other laptops sound. Comparing the same youtube video gave me a noticeable difference in sound between my ipod and my wife's macbook when compared to the dv6t. I imagine when I compare with a higher fidelity original I'll notice even more.

    The speakers are typical hp crap and really don't have much bass to speak of. They're mid to low-end mid-range drivers. The dv7 has one up from the dv6 with its "subwoofer" and so it can produce a lot of the lower notes the dv6 can't hit.

    Ok. I'll wrap that chapter up.

    I knew that the headphone jack was the biggest part of the Beats Audio. I just assumed that the speakers were too. My fault.

    hmm. I love the umber...and I definitely like it better than this steel. But I can see why others would like it.

    Oh I just picked yours to respond to at random as I wanted to respond to this "sub-topic". I actually thought the speakers WERE the beats audio, lol, so I was one worse. It wasn't until I was terribly underwhelmed by the speakers that I decided to dig deeper. I was a bit irresponsible of a consumer. oops.

    Just got back from some work/travel with the DV6T and I have some positives to extol.

    The DV6 was actually usable in the plane and even on a Southwest flight as cramped as it was. The 2 headphone ports were a blessing with 2 kids wanting their own headset each. I had some oddities with having to do a hard reboot for the DVD to work since I was going on resume for the most part, but I need to update the bios from F.06.

    Fast user switching was pretty handy in presentations too. Just swiped with the fingerprint to the profile without skype or other distractions loaded up. This machine was working pretty well.

    What is the code, and how do you set it up, for opening up the disc tray by holding down F2?

    (from dgobe) Here's an AutoHotKey script that will eject the CD if you hold down F2 longer than 1 second like a Mac. F2 will be passed through to the OS if you just tap it as usual.

    Code:
    F2::

    timeout := 1000    ;In milliseconds
    t1 := A_TickCount

    while getkeystate("F2", "P") {
            sleep 1
    	if(A_TickCount - t1 > timeout) {
    		Drive, Eject
    		return
    	}
    }
    Send {F2}
    return
    Note: Disable Action keys in BIOS, but can still be used by pressing fn first. (ex: fn+f12 = wireless toggle)

    I don't have my laptop yet so I can't say all the steps you need but somewhere you should be able to assign AutoHotKey scripts to keys.

    Just run the AutoHotkey program and you'll see a green/white H in your system tray(might be hidden, click up arrow to far left of tray). Right-click the icon and select "Edit This Script"

    Paste the code in there and remove the example code for Ctrl-Alt-N etc.

    Make sure Action Keys are disabled in the BIOS and use F12...I did that for a reason, because F12 is rarely used. If you're running an app that uses F2 and you hold the key longer than 1 second it will start sending a bunch of F2's to the app.

    Ok I'm so close to pulling the trigger on a dv6tqe i7-2630QM 6770 2GB unit and moving up to a heavy machine from my 3820TG. Poss deal breaker for me, does it have an 3g hpsa mobile broadband option? I can't find anything about this.

    Is it possible to add or upgrade a gobi 3000 via a free mini Pcie?

    You could try.
    Most likely you get an Error 104. HP is very strict of what gets in their mPCIe.

    You can always return no question asked, if returned before 21 days.

    So in regards to the dv6 sound...

    I think that the sound quality is pretty decent for a laptop. I think it's fairly crisp. I would agree that there's virtually no bass, but that's to be expected from laptop speakers. I would be curious to know how the sound from the dv6 compares to the Envy since they both have Beats audio.

    With regards to the Beats audio complaints...I think there's only so much you can do without putting expensive speakers. I also think the focus on the Beats audio is more of the software and headphone use. I think that the sound is pretty good in even a cheap $15 set of earbuds I have.

    I tried using the WiDi and noticed that the sound seems slightly muffled as compared to through the laptop or headphones...I'm assuming there is a slight bit of quality loss due to the wireless transmission and then routing through HDMI to my TV and finally back out of the TV and to the surround system. But...it's still pretty good.

    I have the dv7t 6000 edition. I haven't played alot with the switching graphics, but mines auto switches fine when I use battery and AC. I also have a manual switch option which works. So no problems here. I also kept my original config without a fresh new install.

    This isnt what we are referring to. Yours switches manually based on what you select in the CCC or if you boot on battery power or not. The new dynamic switch in the 6100 is supposed to be 'seamless' in which some applications run through the ATI card, others run through the Intel video. Its not one OR the other, its both together.... It doesnt work as well as it should.

    I assume, you're talking about i7-2820QM - yes, it does supports WiDi. I forgot to mention though that you also need to have one of the following wireless cards in your laptop: Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000, 1030, 6200, 6205, 6230, or 6300.

    You don't need the 2GB graphics card. The extra memory won't provide you with any advantages, because no games will be able to take advantage of it on a card of this level. Stick with the 1GB 6770M.

    Also IMO generally it's a better idea to use a USB stick for 3G anyway, so you won't be limited to a single computer, just a tip.

    Obligatory comment: be sure you get the 1920x1080 display!

    The "both" together is a good point, and one that I didn't realize until the recent tech articles game out. The new autoswitching actually maintains the ability to leave both GPUs active at the same time for multi-tasking. It's amazing how many intensive tasks you can have active at the same time without bogging the system down! They still need to improve the autoswitching interface a bit, and give us more flexability to choose, but I have yet to see a game that didn't work correctly with the new autoswitching, so they obviously put some time into the design. It's just the refinement that's lacking, and hopefully will come in time. I certainly wouldn't let it disuade me from ordering one of the newer models. Crysis 2 at 1920 x 1080 with high settings is beautiful and smooth, with no tearing, stuttering, or other problems to report.

    The DV7T's are shipping with the Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000, so I'm assuming it's the same for the DV6T. WiDi is definitely supported. Several have already used it with success.

    Which unfortunately unable to take full advantage of the WiDi yet due to driver issues. HP's fault, not Intel.

    Out of the box, it can run, just not the protected content like bluray, ..etc
    Also, no driver update available on for the dv6/dv7 series.

    Hey guys new to the forum . Just bought the new dv7tqe. It got here on yesterday. I got the 2gb 6770m upgrade even though I knew it wasn't going to help at all lol, i just saw 50 bucks more and decided to click it. i got the i7-2630QM, 8gb ddr3, 750gb hd, 1920x1080 screen, and whatever else free upgrade they were giving [blu-ray and such] . So far I have installed and tried Witcher 2 and Hunted The demons forge. Witcher 2 ran great, but I really wanted to try hunted. No lag and very smooth at everything on high at 1920x1080. Anyways to the question, does anybody know how to overclock this 2gb card? I cannot get sapphire trixx or anything else to give me a proper reading or let me up my clocks. I have the original HP radeon drivers on here, which i then installed the 11.5a hotfix and then the 11.5b hotfix directly over. When it was on the original HP drivers it was giving the same readings when I put on a game. And I'm pretty sure my memory Mhz shouldn't be running at 216 especially since I see people clocking their memory MHz to more than 700-800. Can you maybe tell me what I'm doing wrong? Or am I missing something? Thanks. attached two screen shots

    This has been covered ad nauseum over on the "modding" thread. Please direct your attention there.

    Welcome! So, if I understand what you're saying right, the simple answer is that O/C'ing isn't really possible ATM. As for your clock and memory speeds, I think this is due to power options on the dv7. It clocks the card down when not in use. If you set GPU-Z up to auto-refresh and create a log file. You can go into a game play around, and look at the file. If I'm right, your clocks should be normal while playing and under load.

    I'm actually pretty computer savvy and I didn't think of that * slaps self on head lmfao. I will try to log it now. I will try to get a 3dmark done in a few too. I'll let you know the results thanks.

    All ATI and NVidia GPUs made in the last 3-5 or so years clock down when not in use.

    ATI's specific technology buzzword for it is 'PowerPlay'. Its so they dont draw as much power when it isnt needed.

    Well 3DMark might not actually engage the dGPU...this is one of the issues with HP's implementation of BACON (AMD's Optimus)...benchmarking doesn't really seem to be terribly accurate.

    why is that? can't you just set the 3dmark executables as high performance in CCC?

    Hey, i did the 3dmark thing, only did the first 2 graphics test and just shut it off. The entire time the screen was flashing really fast for some reason.

    Also I did about 30 minutes of gameplay on max settings 1920x1080 and the gpuz log consistently stayed at 725.0 , 216.0 , ran at about 70c [i have the notepal u3 under the laptop] and the load went anywhere from 60-95%. So why is this stuck at 216?

    *Edit : truthfully idc about overclocking it right now. I just want to get it back to stock speeds 725/800. I try to use trixx , under overclock i click reset but it says could not get default clocks.

    What game were you playing? With Crysis 2, I saw it jump up to the normal clocks in GPU-Z, but for StarCraft 2, I've seen lower than stock reported. I'm guessing it varies based on load. As load increases, it makes the card faster. I've never seen a noticeable slowdown in any of the games though, so it must be very responsive.

    I think this is also why it's difficult to benchmark the new cards, even when you can get the appropriate GPU engaged. 3DMark Vantage seems to want to default to the Intel HD graphics for some reason. Maybe, it's because the 3d graphics tests open with cycling of two random frames to generate FPS versus constant 3D rendering. It probably doesn't see it as taxing enough on the GPU; whereas, a normal GPU at fixed frequencies will play it back as quickly as possible.

    Thanks for the reply. I tried this with the new Hunted game. I didn't get a chance to install my crysis 2 yet, I will do that now =D
