It is worth EVERY CENT of $150.

Whatever you do, DO NOT get the non HD screen. You will prob be returning it. Colors are washed out, viewing angle is horrible... I could go on and on.

I had them both. I wouldn't give u 2 cents for the glare (glossy) screen. it has no vertical viewing angle forgiveness at all. The HD screen lets you view it at various angles without going wonky. Far better image quality and CRISP, to boot.

1080p + matte screen to me is worth the 150 than my 1080p + 95% Gamut on my XPS.

    Each to their own. :)

Guys just to recap, we found out that HP did away with the lightscribe option when spec'ing these because its now included with all drives, or just the BluRay drive, and BluRay burner drives?

Not guaranteed. They just come if they have in stock and put them on randomly.

Most of the time, they have it anyways even you didn't order for one.

Was the lightscribe option originally offered with all three drives, or just a certain one?

Wish I had heard all of this before I bought my quad yesterdy with the glare. Is it really a problem? Because I've used low-end desktops/laptops up to this point, so anything is a step up from what I've used.

Newegg.com - ADATA Superior Series 16GB S102 USB 3.0 Flash Drive (Titanium Gray) Model AS102-16G-RGY

guys.... I just ordered this flash drive as a recovery media for my 2nd dv7tqe that shipped yesterday. I just wanted to confirm whether I made the correct decision of going with the flash drive for the recovery stuff.... also I hope 16gigs would be enough for the recovery process.... The reason I was worrying because the following link states that I would need at least a 32gig flash drive for the recovery process, or 2 dvd+r for the same..... but wait, 2 dvds add up to a size of 9.4gigs, then why a 32gig flash drive??? weird...huh
So I just wanted a confirmation from you guys...
    Thanks

guys guys.... I just checked out the available driver downloads available on the HP website... to my surprise there is a 'bluetooth 3.0 HS enabler' driver available for download in the networks option.... so does it really enable the faster bluetooth 3.0? I mean does the laptop have a physical version of the faster bluetooth to be enabled? or its just a joke??

For those of you with the dv6tqe, I need some help. Please tell me if the touchpads on your machines work correctly, or if I'm out to lunch here.

I just received my second copy of this laptop. I returned the first one because the touchpad did not seem to function properly. The second one is just the same. I can use the touchpad to maneuver the cursor around the screen. I can right click and left click. That is all.

I cannot do any scrolling of scrollbars with the touchpad, nor any of the two-finger gestures that the touchpad is supposed to perform. If I move the cursor over the vertical scrollbar on the right side of the screen (in a web browser or a Word document, for example), the scrollbar handle does not turn blue. Nothing happens. I have to move the cursor over the up or down arrow, right click and hold, to do any scrolling. Or, I can hold down the left button (under the touchpad) while using my other hand to scroll with the touchpad. This should be a one-finger operation, no?

I own an older dv3510 laptop, running Vista64. On that laptop, if I move the cursor over the scrollbar handle, the handle turns blue. I can drag my finger up or down on the right side of the touchbad, and it will move the scrollbar up and down. One finger. Does a properly functioning touchpad on the dv6tqe do this?

Is there anything I need to activate to make my touchpad do this most basic task? If it can't do that, it's of no use for those times when I haven't got space to utilize a mouse.

What about the two finger gesture capability? Does it work at all?

I wasted three hours on live chat and then a very lengthy phone call with HP support two weeks ago when I had the first copy of the laptop, before the guy decided it was a hardware fault. We went through all the logical stuff in the control panel. We uninstalled the Synaptics driver, then downloaded and installed it again. We did a complete restore of the computer to its original state. Nothing changed. I do not want to go through those hoops again. Nor do I want to install someone else's driver at this point. I need to know if my brand-new laptop if working correctly out of the box.

Please try using the touchpad on your laptop to control scroll bars. Does it work as it is supposed to? Is there something I need to do to get my touchpad to work?

    thanks!

Try using Reil's Touchpad App ( Download the touchpad.exe file and run)

    Try using these settings:

    Scrolling:
    Speed: 65
    Acceleration: 60
    Maximum z threshold: 255
    Delta ratio threshold: 40
    Easing algorithm: easelnQuad
    Duration: 620

    Tapping:
1 finger: Disabled (already in Synaptics driver)
    2 finger: Right
    3 finger: Middle
    Single tap interval threshold: 150
    Maximum finger travel distance: 50
    Maximum w threshold: 15
    Maximum z threshold: 100

    Synaptics:
Disable everything except for tapping and buttons.

This app makes the touchpad much better, and includes two-finger scrolling, two/three- finger right/middle click, etc.

I am trying to get a dual band Intel Wifi card in my dv6t-6000. I first tried buying a Intel 6230 from provantage.com. The BIOS rejected the card. I then bought a 631956-001 from the HP spare parts web site and instead of an Intel 6230 it was some Ralink card. Please help me find a way to run an Intel 6230 or 6205 wifi card. If you are running anything different than the Intel 1000 wifi card in your pavilion DVxT-6xxx or DVxT-61xx please respond and let me know what card you have, where you got it, and how you made it work. Thank you.

All I've got on the machine right now (straight out of the box) is IE9, and Word. Scrolling doesn't work on either of them, nor does placing the cursor over the scroll handle cause it to change color to the active state.

If I put the cursor on the scrollbar handle, and then press down on the left mouse button (under the trackpad, that is), the handle lights up showing that it's active. Scrolling then requires that I maintain pressure on the left button while using the touchpad to scroll with another finger.

From what I've read the BIOS is locked to the wifi card that your laptop came with. At least I read that with the 6100 models.

I'll try Reil's Touchpad app later tonight when I get a chance.

A few questions: do I need to uninstall the Synaptics driver first, to avoid any conflict?

Does anybody's touchpad work properly straight out of the box? How can HP ship all these laptops with a crucial interface not functioning as advertised? The average laptop buyer doesn't hang out on notebookreview forums. What do they do?

Im having trouble installing the latest AMD HD drivers. The install screen goes blank and never comes back and I have to hard power down and restart. Any suggestions? Only thing I have done to the computer is the minimal restore after making restore diskset. Have updated no other drivers.

Anyone else who did the minimal restore have issues with this?

Anyone add a 2nd hard drive to their DV7TQE? I just purchased one with a single hard drive and I would like to put an SSD in it. I'm still unclear whether or not the DV7T comes with the caddy and I just need the cable or what. What's the most cost effective way to get a 2nd HDD in my laptop? Also can I install the slave drive in the primary slot? With my HP Envy, when I replaced my optical drive with a 2nd HDD, it wouldn't boot with my primary in the optical slot, only in the default HDD slot.

I'd get a cable or second caddy kit from a vendor. The DV7 comes with the second caddy, you just need the secondary cable. HP sells the caddy kit for 48, and I think newmodeus sells the cable only for 38? The benefit if the hp kit is another two caddies and an extra primary cable.

I got the kit from HP simply because thy was the only option at the time. I'm quite happy with it. I have the factory default 640 in the primary spot, and a 500gb in the secondary with my Win7 Pro OS. The factory Win7 Is backup in case of issues with my older 500. Came in handy yen my primary partition died for some mysterious reason.

The primary drive MUST be the boot drive, but you can set up the boot manager on the primary and have it partitioned for data only. I fully suggest swapping the SSD for the old primary drive for the bet performance at boot. Otherwise you're defeatin the purpose of the SSD. The bios does not allow you to change the boot order between the two slots.

No other card will work right now on these as there is a whitelist on the bios limiting what cards you use. We have posted to a bios modding website to see if there is a chance that a hex hack or even a complete whitelist removal can be done, but the person that does them has been away for over 2 weeks now, hopefully he will be back soon and will let us know if either of these options can be done.

and unrelated to this, I just sent back my dv7t QE 6100 to get it exchanged for the full HD anti-glare 1080p screen (ordered it with 1600x900 screen). hopefully it comes in dark umber this time instead of silver xD

It seems that way. Some people have it worse than others. For instance, I don't notice mine unless I stick my nose right to the keyboard. Yours seem a little bit worse, but I still don't think it should be a problem. If it bothers you too much, I suppose you can exchange it.

It is already very much worth it. In the near future, it will be pretty much essential.

If I had to venture a guess, I'd say it probably had to do with personal preference. ;)

I don't like the two finger scrolling on mine. My skin can be kinda oily sometimes, and the humidity here doesn't help. I just went into the pointer devices and set up the touchpad to do scrolling by dragging on the side and bottom of the touchpad. Works much better for me now. Try that.

Uhh, the machine checked the primary and wouldn't boot if no OS or boot manager was set. I'm running a DV7T-6000. I believe I DID get the machine to run if the secondary was used but no other drive was installed in the primary slot...

IIRC, I attempted to boot with a non-OS/Boot MGR in the primary and it wouldn't go to the secondary to boot fraom that perfectly good drive.

I DID recently upgrade to F.14, so maybe it does now. I don't know.

Those instructions don't make any sense....there's nothing to remove in Programs/Features...lol at least on mine there's not.

HP is still clueless. Until they come up with a real fix, all they are doing is repeating the same old same old.

Anyone else already has visible wear on their trackpad? I've had this for a month, barely used it and can already see the glossy spot in the middle...sucks.

When you talk to tech support, you tell the idiot on the bottom of the totem pole that it's already been done. Tell them you want the case manager or supervisor and then in a professional manner ream them. Ask them to contact their hardware department and forward the complaints that common software like Adobe suites don't work well due to lack of card detection.

Keep hammering away. They will fix it if enough a stink is made. Then there is also the BBB.

I posted a similar pic on this thread. It appears that this is normal since a lot of other people have it too. HP also said that it is normal and I should just ignore it but then I didn't expect them to say anything different.

It's just something we'll have to live with I guess.

I've detailed the issue to HP folks that have:

    1. not cared one whit--the case manager, for example. he has poor customer relations skills and kept talking over me. all he would do was promise he'd give me an extended warranty if I buy another unit.

    2. pretended to care--the escalation specialist I spoke with to cancel laptop #3 (same day I ordered it, so the cancellation was possible) asked me for specifics and promised to pass it on to engineering.

    3. initially seemed helpful, but interest waned over time--the second level tech that spent so much time trying to fix issues with two of my DV6's promised to send the issue to engineering--that was back in week one of June. We periodically trade emails, but no movement on the issue according to him.

    4. not responded to date--I sent an email to the "email the CEO" addy. nada.

I give HP a zero out of ten, on this issue, and that's being generous. they've ruined what would be an awesome laptop. beautiful screen (HD), fast CPU. granted, the speakers suck, but that's rectified by plugging in external speakers.

there is an easy fix for the light leak. but you have to purchase a product you likely don't have at home--it's "strip caulk". It won't melt, and you can conform it easily and press it deep into a crevice and then wipe away any excess so that it doesn't mar the appearance of your laptop. it's totally opaque. many years ago, we used to refer to that stuff as "dum dum" but it's a very handy thing to have around.

hi dave, i just ordered an exchange for my laptop to exchange the "hp brightview" screen for the anti glare 1080p screen. can you give any information on the major differences other than the resolution? like the black levels are really bad on the brightview and the viewing angles are quite poor. are these things much improved on the anti-glare 1080p screen?

YES! the HD screen, IMO is a major improvement over the other screen that comes on the DV6. The large vertical angle of view provided by the HD is a refreshing change from most LCD monitors on laptops that force you to watch from just one specific angle, and even then the top and bottom of the screen look different. there is almost no "reverse video" effect with the HD screen. I would never again buy a nice laptop with the run-of-the-mill screen. It's well worth the cost, IMO.

Before I received it, I was worried the matte screen wouldn't be to my liking, but upon turning it on and then popping in a Blu ray...wow! I still had the first dv6 so I could compare them side by side (other than playing the blu-ray). There really IS no comparison.

good to hear. i have the dv7 so its the 1600x900 res screen I got but its the same HP brightview screen. black levels were really bad and at any time u were to try to watch from any angle, the blacks would wash out and it would look awful.

fedex is going to pick it up tomorrow :p
