its perfectly viewable and the glossy makes the colors very nice to look at but the black levels aren't good and the viewing angles aren't forgiving

i was sending it in to get a dent in the speaker bar repaired anyway so i figured i might as well upgrade the screen as well

the consensus on this forum is that its the best upgrade you can choose. like the difference with the two options are night and day

hey does anyone know how to get the GPU scaling options for the Catalyst Control Center. I don't see them anywhere. It's strange that a basic option like this would be missing.

    Thanks in advance.

Would you give exact instructions on how to do that? I haven't located any optioins under pointer devices to set up the touchpad in the manner you describe. Thanks!

Can someone fill me in on the switchable graphics problem? I'm pretty sure I was one of the first people to receive my Dv7 and I'm still able to switch my GPU manually. Is this problem just on more recent models? Or should I not upgrade my drivers?

you have the 6000 model which uses manual switching which works fine with all program types

the 6100 models use dynamic switching (switches based on preference per program) but it doesn't switch to radeon with OpenGL programs (yet, hopefully it will be fixed or manual switching will be added later for these programs)

you can upgrade your drivers if you'd like as you don't have to worry about dynamic switching

A glossy spot quickly develops with the accumulation of body/food oils. Cleaners such as Invisable Glass work well on the cleaning of ALL the laptop surfaces. If that doesn't solve your problem, I don't know what to tell you. I found that the only part impossible to keep looking like new is the glossy plastic bezel surrounding the screen (micro scratches easily)

Once again regarding the trackpad and scrolling:

I tried downloading Riel's app. This required turning off Norton, which refused to allow it through. And then a message popped up saying some .net framework was missing, without which the program couldn't run. After Norton was switched back on, it deleted the .exe file. I suspect even if I manage to get it installed, Norton will wipe it out later. I've been using that Norton app on my desktop for the past three years. I don't want to ditch it.

There was a suggestion to get into the pointer control to configure scrolling on the trackpad. I don't see any options there to do that.

A few hours ago Notebookreview posted a review of the dv7t, which I presume has the same trackpad as the dv6tqe. The review gives the trackpad low marks, and includes this little gem: "...there is no scrollbar using the default settings." Wonderful. It would be nice if HP tech support knew this!

But I'm still wondering, "if there is no scrollbar using the default settings," where are the controls to change the default settings??? Surely there must be a way to enable scrolling on the trackpad without resorting to a downloaded app that Norton views as a potential threat?

Is anyone able to scroll with the trackpad using the software as delivered from HP? If so, how did you get it turned on?

You mean OTHER than two finger scrolling? It takes a bit getting used too, and I DO use a mouse 95% of the time, but I BELIEVE you can train yourself to get it to function ... To your satisfaction, may be another story. IF you are willing to play around with the gesture (two finger) nonsense, I found two things that help me.

    - The inital contact with the pad using two fingers should be similiar to your tapping action BUT MUST remain in constant contact with the pad. Kind of plop down your fingers... then move them around.
    - Upon contact, the larger the space is between the two fingers seems the better the gesture is recognized.
    - Once recognized as a scrolling gesture, one finger will suffice, but one finger must remain in contact with the pad at all time. Using this fact, you can walk up and down the entire page with a little practice

Probably NOT the answer you are seeking, but may help

Hi. I have a recovery related question here. I plan to do a minimized system install soon after burning the recovery dvds. Now I have a small question here.

Ever since I got my dv6qte I have done a lot of driver upgrades via HP Support Assistant and some manually. I noticed one thing. All the driver upgrades get unpacked in SweSetup folder on C:\
And I know this folder survives after doing MSI. So when I'm done with MSI will I get a system with the current drivers and minus the bloat? I dont want that. My current system is screwed up. Its a bit slow (not sure if I got a virus) and my fingerprint reader is not detected by Windows and Simplepass although device manager shows that the validity sensor is connected to internal USB hub and drawing 100 mA of power. Its some driver related problem and I have latest drivers for it too. Or maybe some system file is screwed up. I've screwed up something in the system.

So I just need my system back to original state with orig drivers which shipped with my system minus bloatware. Will MSI do exactly that?

    Thanks

I would think that the recovery partition which is D would not have any of the updated drivers. I would guess that the restore would be to the drivers that the computer was shipped with.

Click on "Start" - type "mouse" and select it - "Device Settings" tab - "Settings" button - go to "Scrolling" and click on "Options" (the symbol to the left of the "?" mark).

    Hope this helps.

The viewing angles are quite bad if your watching a movie, it can be annoying with the washed out blacks, since I normaly lie somewhere and watch it. .

But for normal operation (e.g. work, browsing the intraweb, games...) the brightview is quite good when you find the "niche" position.

tl:dr; Get the full hd screen if you can afford it, but if you cant or are not able to get one (like me, no fhd in my country ) the brightview is not bad at all.

That's an interesting idea. I didn't think of filling it with caulk. I suppose as long as I can remove it, a little gray (I've got the gray color laptop) silicone caulk would fill it without looking too bad.

strip caulk doesn't harden so if the unit has to be disassembled in the future, the strip caulk won't interfere. However, I suppose you could use an opaque silicone caulk in lieu of the what I was suggesting, to block the light leakage.

    comes in gray too.

How are you guys chatting with CSR after you've placed your orders but not before you've received your laptops? Pre-sales won't help me, and tech support is asking for a SN. Anyone have a link?

The 1080p FHD antiglare screen upgrade is the single best upgrade you can get on the DV7TQE! You will notice the difference immediately. I never owned the BrightView 1600x900, but have seen it and played with it on several occasions at BestBuy, and I will say this. Black levels, contrast, brightness, color accuracy, viewing angles, and resolution are all SIGNIFICANTLY improved on the FHD version. It's good enough that I would exchange if you are still within the window to do so, and re-order for the new screen. If a 30% coupon is still active, it comes out to be a $105 upgrade, and is worth every penny (even at full price).

Are you really sure this is a good idea? I mean, it's not even like there's a big crack in it. It's literally nanometers thick. Plus I'm pretty sure caulking any part of your laptop probably voids the warranty.

Just change it under the Windows mouse/pointer settings. There's the option to set the trackpad up for scrolling like most other trackpads. Works fine after that.

hey... I just checked out the review of the dv7t qe... Why does it say that it has got a light blue neon light around the touchpad? I have a steel grey dv7t qe and and its got a white light around the touchpad... It doesn't seem to be any shade of blue from any angle... So does the dark umber have a blue light??

I'm not sure that putting caulk in a gap would void the warranty. On the other hand, I probably won't do it and will just get used to it.

I wish the hard drive light was the one on top. That would actually be a useful thing to see through the crack. The fact that it's a power light is kind of useless. I know it is on already.

I have a feeling the blue they are referring to is just the white light reflecting off the umber case as it comes up through the plastic bezel around he touchpad. The light does look purple/blue-ish now that I really look at it.

I am considering purchasing a dv6t and I have a few basic questions.

What is the difference between the dv6t and dv6tse?

I was originally planning on the dual core but I see there is a discount on the quad core. I probably don't need the extra performance of the quad core and I am wondering how much the quad core will cost on battery life vs. the dual core. I am also concerned about the fan running more (noise).

Is the 7200rpm drive noisier than the 5400rpm.

Is it worth paying extra for the Radeon Graphics if I am not a gamer?

The hard drive noise depends how tolerant is the user. The 5400 is quieter than the 7200, but you have to be pretty intolerant already to notice. If you can't stand any clicking or seeking noise, invest in a ssd.

I have worked in I.T. for many years and can remember the good days of the 90's when a home consumer would call Gateway 2000, Dell, whatever tech support and get someone that you could understand because it was not outsourced. They DID NOT read from a SCRIPT, they knew their stuff and they were trained techs with certifications, etc, etc.

Dave, HP is not the only company with this problem. I came from 11 years with Dell (Gateway 2000 before that), and while 99% I always got my way when I did not give up, stayed on top of the situation, and constantly conveyed disgust and dissatisfaction - I had to explain things to them a million damn times. There is a communication barrier and lack of major, MAJOR training to save money.

This is how I run my conversation with them (HP, Dell, tech companies, etc, etc) - I TELL THEM, then I TELL THEM WHAT I JUST TOLD THEM, THEN I ask them to tell me what I just told them - and these idiots explain something completely different than what I just told them.

The communication barrier we have with tech support/customer service from these companies and MAJOR LACK of training in my opinion is NOT going to get better anytime soon.

HOWEVER, typically when large businesses and enterprises call for tech support/customer service - whether its on a server, laptop, or desktop we have priority tech support and people that are not outsourced that typically do NOT ask a million questions, because they are already talking to someone in an IT department, so they just dispatch the part and/or tech to replace the part.

The performance of the Broadcom 4313 card is ok. Bluetooth 3.0+HS is also present in the Broadcom 4313 as it is a combo card, i.e., Wifi+Bluetooth in single card. I have never used an intel wifi card, so, I can't give you comparison.

Link to a review with these problems?
I know the switchable graphics issue, but that's only with opengl apps, but that isn't a deal breaker for me at least.
The 6770m is a beast of a card, you could relate it back to the switchable graphics I guess, but the card itself is awesome.

And I've heard good things about the speakers, not the best of the best, but I hear they're at least par.

Has anyone tried USB 3.0 on the HP dv6qte? What read/write speeds do you get with external USB 3.0 HDD? I'm thinking of getting one. Do HDD have problems with the NEC USB 3.0 host controller (since USB 3.0 is not natively supported by SandyBridge) ?

I removed the factory HDD and put it into a USB 3.0 enclosure, it works a lot faster on USB 3.0 than 2.0. I replaced the factory drive with an Intel 510 120GB SSD.

I tell you what I'll put a second Intel 510 into another USB 3.0 enclosure and test it out on a few large files on the dv6tqe. I'll report back.

    Edit:

I copied a file over 3GB file from the internal SATA 6Gb/s SSD (Intel 510) to an SSD of the same make/model in a Masscool USB 3.0 enclosure. I wrote at a rate of 107 MB/s and copied back at a rate of 220 MB/s. The enclosure is only rated for SATA I/II, so the SSD is restricted by that, the SSD at SATA III speeds is rated at Up to 450 MB/s (Read) and Up to 210 MB/s (write). Still, pretty snappy if I do say so myself. :D

Anyone care to share their experience in build/shipping time?
I ordered a custom dv6tqe from HP Direct on 6/23, and I suppose I was a little shocked when they estimated the laptop would be finished and ready to ship by 7/12... Is it really going to take that long?

The first one I ordered took about 2 weeks less time, but the build time was nearly a month. The second one actually shipped a day later than the estimated time, which was about the same amount of time you have posted.

Thank you so much. So what read/write speeds should we expect if a 7200 rpm drive was in the USB 3.0 enclosure instead of an SSD? I really wish to know if its worth getting an ext USB 3.0 HDD. I dont know how good the NEC host controller is. It seems to be improving with driver updates but I dont think it offers true USB 3.0 speeds as yet. And that means I wont get much of a performance upgrade if I get an ext USB 3.0 HDD.

Original Build date was the 21st, laptop shipped on the Friday 17th, customs delay from the Sunday 19th to Wednesday 22nd, got it 22nd. As long as you don't see "Clearance Delay" you're ok. I would've got it on the 20th if it hadn't got stuck in customs. If it gets stuck there's nothing you can do but wait.

Easiest way I can think of is install the Lightscribe software, run it and go to the System Information tab.

    http://download.lightscribe.com/ls/LS_Update_1.18.23.1_.exe

I think the Lightscribe software was already in a folder in my Programs (X86). If you have it, most likely your drive supports it.
