Your right, I was reading two threads at a time, deciding between and intel and amd and I thought I was in the right thread. My bad![]()

Any of you guys tried playing Battlefield Heroes on the 6770m? Was wondering what kind of fps you guys on highest settings on either 780p or 1080p. It's not a very demanding game though.

I had my apartment robbed of a dreamcast and ps2 back in late 2001 and I haven't bought another console since then. -
Thanks for the help...! -

Didn't go with dv7 17" because I'm planning on using it in univ. and 17" isnt all that portable IMHO.
Technically there are better deals in terms of lappies out there ( MSI 16F2, G53SW-XA1, or XN1 which would have 460m or 560m or even 570m ( MSI 1761)) Buuut battery life on those monsters kinda low and they weight a ton.Plus considering the fact that my desktop is my main gaming system ( with nice gtx 580s in 3-way sli) I don't really need a super powerful notebook, just something to run HoMM 6 in upcoming future, + I don't own the xbox 360, I decided to roll with the promotion.
P.S. Hope it wont have issues like Lenovo y570 did -
You should be good with those specs. Any upgrades beyond that I would consider not worth it.

Hello everybody!
I'm thinking of buying HP Pavilion DV7-6003 and I would like to know if this one is one of the Quad Edition?
Here are the specs if it would help you:
Intel® Core™ i7 procesor i7-2630QM (2,0 GHz)
43,9 cm (17,3") HD+ LED (1600x900) glossy
RAM 4 GB DDR3, HDD 1 TB 5400rpm, DVD+/-RW
AMD Radeon Mobility HD 6770M 1GB GDDR5
It includes Beats Audio and it looks like one of the new series, but I would like to be certain.
Thank you! -
61xx - New series, Second run - different MB/GPU config
all new series will have either 6770m or 6940m GPUs (- or maybe just Intel HD3000 on some models) -
i have hp dv6t 6000 sometimes my mouse icon freezed for abt 2 seconds and continue running back to normal again..
I did a "minimize recovery" on my laptop to get rid of bloated softwares but nothing change on mouseicon freezing =/
any help please? -
Ah man, now I'm thinking I might cancel my order for the DV7T and get that instead. Still kind of regret picking a 17" model anyway. -
Cons: Larger/Harder to lug around -
I just keep looking at my gf's 15.4" screen and thinking "wow, a 17" is going to be friggin' huge". Like I mentioned before, I'm only on a 14.1" right now.
This thing needs to hurry up and get here so I can stop second guessing my choice.... lol. -
The dv7t is larger, but UNLESS you are going to be continuously moving it around, a better choice (MO) -

Don't have mine yet, but that looks normal.
Modern silicon can go to ~90C and still be stable, so those numbers are well within the safe temp range. -
Heh, just realized I could have had a "free" Xbox360 if I bought the dv7-6195 (uni faculty/staff member).
Doesn't seem like such a good deal though when I look at the 30% I saved on the CTO with better options.
What's with the 2% HP academy savings anyway? Big whoop-de-do..... a whole friggin' 2%. -

with the bios update
would the hp dv6 6177 dont have any problems ?
thnx -
I have had an interesting issue for the last few days. After I wake the laptop up from sleep, the fingerprint reader doesn't seem to activate for the first few seconds. It used to be instantaneous that I could swipe and be in the system, but now I have to wait a few seconds. It's not like it's going to ruin my day if I have to wait a couple extra seconds, but I thought it was interesting.

I just took the plunge and got a dv6tqe. I've tried reading through the whole forum to find the information but its been difficult.
Can anyone link me to a guide to turn the optical drive in the dv6t into a secondary hard drive? (I want to get a SSD but not sacrifice the space/money for an HDD)
Thanks guys -

You make a good point about differentiation between the two lines. I've been looking at that "White LIist" thread regarding the wireless cards that HP is apparently blocking and I think its absolutely ridiculous that they won't allow us to change it.
Oh well I just popped in this thread to see if there was any movement on that front. As much as I loved the Envy that I got last week I still think the dv7t QE is a fine laptop and I would have been very satisfied (if not more) with its design.
Still though I really want that a/b/g/n wireless card thats within the Envy and combined with the more powerful graphics card I'm definitely set to re order it tomorrow or Thursday using that coupon. -

Greetings! I have just purchased a dv7t and have been spending way too much time going over these forums.
I'm planning on purchasing a separate Crucial m4 SSD 256 GB SSD to go with the already installed HD. Few questions I have:
It seems that all I need to purchase is a cable and not a caddy for the installation. Is this correct?
It also seems that I should install the SSD in the primary drive and move the HD to the secondary drive.
Lastly, I will want to put the OS on the SSD. How easy/difficult will this be to in effect, transfer the OS from the HD over to the SSD. Will I be able to do a minimal re-install on to the SSD to get rid of the bloatware and then erase everything on the HD? Or am I going to need to do a total clean install of Win 7 on the SSD?
I'm not too familiar with all of this stuff so it's taking me a little while to get up to speed - thanks for your patience! -
No the minimal restore only works if you install it on the hard drive the laptop came with. In order to install windows on a SSD, you'll need to create a Windows 7 install disc and install it with that (you put in the Windows 7 key found on the bottom of the laptop).
However, first thing you should do when you get the laptop is save the SWSetup folder found in the C: on a flash drive on recordable cd/dvd. This is because you'll need to go in and install each driver from that folder after you install Windows 7 manually using the disc.
If you try to do a minimal restore with the SSD in the primary disc, it will give you an error message.
But I have the same laptop as you except my Crucial SSD is just 64gb but Windows boots instantly so it's still worth it xD
This thread will show you how to make the Windows 7 install disc if you don't already have one: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-compaq/432564-hp-laptop-out-box-guide-2-0-windows-7-a.html -
Order is surely too late to cancel now, and even if I did an RTS it would take too long for the credit charge to clear for me to be able to re-order. Discount would be over by then.
Bah, buyers remorse is a b***. -
the backlit keyboard would be nice though xD -
Quick question, is the NON-3D BrightView display the same as the 3D version (other than 3D capabilities obviously). DO they both have 120Hz refresh rates?
If the refresh rate is the same, I don't need the extra price of the 3D since I won't ever use it.
BTW, this DV7T vs ENVY thing is about the make my mind explode. >.<
EDIT: Nevermind, I just confused myself and already know the answer. I need a nap. ;p -
The 3D Envy display is 120Hz (necessary to make 3D work), and is listed as a 400-nit brightness panel
the NON-3D Envy display is 60Hz and listed as a 300-nit display,
some points to make:
1. I wouldn't spend extra money on 120Hz for the refresh rate itself. the advantages are amusing to consider but as a practical matter it doesn't benefit anything to have a "120Hz" display
2. 300-nit is already too bright. I wouldn't consider the 120Hz 3D panel for its brightness.
in short, the benefits of the 120 Hz panel is, well, 3D. when running in non-3D mode, its capabilities don't bring anythign substantially beneficial to the table.
Other than the matte finish (DV7), the Envy non-3D panel and the DV7 1080p panel are functionally the same. -
Thanks so much for the information!
So I put the SSD into the primary slot and then do a clean install of Win 7. I purchased the back-up discs directly from HP so I assume I can use those to do the install. Seems that I will still want to copy and install the SWSetup folder instead of trying to find all of the files on the recovery discs.
Is it possible to use the apps mentioned in the out-of-the-box thread to take care of the key issue?
At that point, how do I go about clearing out the back up original HD? -
Those programs in that thread can be used to activate windows 7 on the clean install but you can also just look at the bottom of the laptop and find the key and activate it manually -
HI
I am new in your forum and I really do not know is this a right place for these questions or not...
actualy I want to buy a new laptop from hp and I see 6090 and 6199 information ....
but I heard these models have graphic switching problem and they just use intel is it right?
so I want to know is ther any definite way to sole this problem?
and wich model of 6XXX and 61XX do not have this kind of problem?
thank you -
-
and do you think 6199 with bios update is ok?
and 6199 is highest moddel in 61xx am I right?
and can you please give some info about heating problem?
cheers -
no heating issues in the 61xx models. I've run all four cores at full tilt and still the system runs at less tahn 90 degrees. I love switching to the internal grahics processor when I don't need the power of the 677 GPU.
The Bus Alive Chip Off technology saves power too.
on EDIT: note that HP is now shipping the Latest BIOS, so you don't even need to do the BIOS upgrade yourself. -

Hi all, Im just new guy there..
I just want to say, that I finally got my DV7 6142-so laptop
and it's so *****ing good !!
I think that the battery life would be better?
Energy saving - settings it shows 3hrs and 35mins without doing
anything (99% left) but I can deal with it, no problem
And when gaming, it's getting soooo hot (i have a cooling"mat") and Im using coolsense program, but Speedfan still says +85 all the time
(keypad getting wayyy too hot) but idk.. It's normal 4 laptops??
That's all for now, thanks for reading this !!

you could search the hp website for some suggestions on conserving power but in general some things to check include:
1. unnecessary apps. I built mine using the minimal image recovery and saved over 20 apps from being installed, and the processor runs a couple of degrees cooler at idle. all from removing the bloatware
2. check your screen brightness on battery, and pull it back to something less than full brightness.
3. check other power settings, i.e. disk, when on battery power
4. configure fixed switchable graphics and (manually) configure the Intel IGP whenever possible. The DV7 has a unique bus-alive chip-off technology that powers down the Radeon GPU when it is not in use.
as for the heat. gaming is a severe test. to find out where you really are with respect to temps, download hwinfo32 and monitor the actual CPU core temps. it would not be unusual to see temps in the low 90s but 100 is the absolute maximum rating specified by Intel, and if your core temps approach this figure then something is not right.
the cooling pads are good. also insure that ambient temp is reasonable, and try to lower the humidity as well to the extent that you can. won't do much good to blow warm air into the laptop. Also make sure that the underside air intakes are not obstructed and that your air quality is good (not too dusty, which will -- over time -- compromise cooling effectiveness). It

also using a 9-cell battery instead of the 6 cell will give you an extra 3-4 hours
-
good catch. I have the extra-capacity 6-cell which gives a marginal improvement. but the 9-cell, should the form factor be acceptable, not only gives substantialy longer life, but also helps cooling by raising the laptop off the table surface, for example
