Why the hell is the bezel so easy to scratch? Does HP know about this? I mean...touching it scratches it. They should be forced to replace all the bezels with a better material (kind of like apple did with iPod Nanos)

The bezel really is obnoxiously easy to scratch. The piece of material they put between the screen and the keyboard during shipping scratched mine.

Take sandpaper to it. Then you won't notice the scratches from the cloth. Similar to this. I've always wanted to do this to a piece of expensive electronics.

    Bleh...... guess I'm a DV7T owner now. :(

Called HP yesterday to cancel my order, spoke to supervisor that said she would try and put the cancelation through and that I should get a confirmation within 48 hours.

Just got an email from HP, but not the one I was hoping for. I got the shipping confirmation with tracking number.

I wanted to get an ENVY 17 3D instead, but I don't have the credit available to buy both right now and return the DV7T when I get it. Booooo!

So return the DV7, then wait until the credit goes through, then buy the Envy 17?

Because the 30% discount will be long gone by then.

Ah well, I'm sure I will like it anyway. I just really wanted the better build quality of the ENVY and the slot load DVD.

I wasn't familiar with HP laptops when I ordered and thought the "high performance" model was the best they had to offer.

ok I'll bite. can you explain the intended meaning of your screen name, when sounded out?

but I digress. I have to admit it took me some time and research to understand the positioning of DV7 and Envy products as well, but I started my research almost a year ago, and have been watching the development of both platforms ever since. The best intersection between my needs and a product turned out to be the latest DV7 quad.

frankly, the latest DV7 models are outstanding, having been updated more recently than the Envy. Unless you really need 3D gaming or require serious machine virtualization work, you won't regret the DV7 purchase. It's a personal preference of course, but I prefer the matte 1080p display upgrade of the DV7 to the standard glossy display of the Envy.

Performance wise, the real and tangible benefit to the Envy is the 6850 graphics card, which offers a small but measurable and noticeable improvement over the 6770 card supplied in the DV7. that aside, the latest DV7 offers some advantages in battery life, the 2D screen (matte, if you prefer that...), while offering identical internal performance specs with the same processors and the same speeds, including I/O. HP has even informed me that the DV7 supports SATA3 I/O, although I have not been able to verify this, as my Intel 160GB SSD itself cannot run at 6GB/sec.

Envy does offer a better wireless card, and the slot-load optical driver is the bees knees if you ask me. but unless you really intend to push the very limits of processor performance with 1600MHz "front side bus" RAM (which DV7 will not utilize), the DV7's i7 processors will perform just as well as the Envy's i7s.

you could wait for another 30% coupon to show up (recently they disappeared but then came back again in a few weeks), but if you're not into playing that game, enjoy your Dv7 -- it packs the same processor power as the Envy 17.

Nothing intended really. Just a generic nick I use for forums.

Anyway, the specs and features are so close with the DV7 and ENVY that me wanting the envy really comes down to build quality and aesthetics.

I stopped into a bestbuy yesterday morning and had a look at both machines. That was the deal breaker for me. The ENVY has a very sleek "macbook" feel to it quality wise.

True, but it is so much thicker than a macbook pro. I think the DV7 looks sleeker in a way. Don't you think?

I've been using my HP DV7 now for about a month and half. I've noticed that the bezel of the screen is coming off a little or loose at 2 of the corners. Is anyone else noticing this?

Got my DV6T QE today! Unfortunately it is back on its way to HP. When I took it out I noticed the service panel was hanging half off - I snapped it back in. Then I opened it up and noticed a key fell off - I snapped it back in. Then I tried to pop open the bluray drive - nothing happened. The button on that didn't respond or light up at all. I popped it open with a paper clip and put in a bluray and it did work, just the button was faulty. I talked to tech support and they wouldn't just send me a replacement drive to swap out and suggested I exchange it. I did get a small upgrade out of it though, 6gb to 8gb RAM (though I already bought 8gb for it ahead of time), 640gb to 750gb HDD. Sadly...another week or two wait begins.

This is my first HP (I normally buy Dell laptops) - does HP typically not budge on having them send you parts to replace yourself? I never really had an issue with Dell and getting that

Gees, that hasn't been my experience, I just bought a DV7 6111 and there hasn't been a problem with it yet. I also installled a crucial M4 SSD in it and it runs a treat. This is the fastest machine I've ever owned and my first laptop. So far so good.

One thing I have noticed though is if I leave my Mobile Wireless in and boot up it takes ages to boot up so I have to removed it for booting.

    Thoughts on my dv6tqe-6100 machine...

After using my laptop for some time, I've noticed a couple of annoying problems that I hope get resolved over time.

When I come out of sleep, the fingerprint scanner sometimes does not work. This is more of an annoyance than anything else.

I wish the dynamic graphics switching worked with opengl applications. I dislike the fixed mode switching because of the flickering during transition and sometimes my windows don't restore properly. i.e. thunderbird.

Overall though, I do like the laptop and I think it's probably the best laptop on the market right now. It's quiet, fast, and runs cool. The issues I have with it are more quality of build issues and minor nitpiks. I previously owned an envy 15 and the build quality was excellent, but it ran way too hot with a quad core i7. It was so bad I ended up putting the envy 15 on the shelf and getting the dv6t less than a year later.

Oh, and getting the second hard drive bay was a pain in the . I had to literally do some physical hacking on the bezel to get it to work. Not a task for the average joe, but for me it was a requirement.
I dislike the plastic bezel and plastic underside. I wish the keyboard was higher quality. It feels a little springy. I keep hitting the trackpad area with my left thumb area. I dislike the arrow keys. I'm not crazy about the numeric keypad. My web button doesn't work. I am annoyed at the lack of e-sata port. I wish the power port was on the back on the computer instead of the side. If anyone has any thoughts on how to fix the fingerprint scanner issue, that would be cool.

I've done some mods that make my configuration a little unique.
I've ripped out the bluray drive and put in a hard drive bay, so I have a SSD and a traditional hard drive. I've also loaded it with 16 gigs of ram with the ridiculously expensive 8 gig dimms.

Hope this helps anyone considering buying this machine. I do recommend it as it is the only machine I could find which lets me have : Full HD resolution, 16 gig of ram, 2 hard drives, and weighs less than 5.2 lbs.

yes. coolest mode appears to prevent the processor from going into turbo mode and even throttles it back from maximum clock speed. for most situations my guess is this is a good setting, as all four cores running at maximum clock (not turbo) is still a boatload of computing power. Ive even seen all four cores throttle back to 1700 MHz in this mode while temps stay in the mid 70s. Definately effective for its intended purpose. This may even be a good setting for gaming I don' know -- my assumption here is that the GPU will get hit harder than the CPU and this type of CPU throttling (caused by "coolest mode") may be acceptable. but I haven't tested this...

performance optimized mode appears to allow turbo, in my testing anyway, and still allows 90 ish temps. Ive run a prime 64 torture test for several minutes, while all four cores are running at 2200MHz, and core temps stabilize in the upper 80s.

If it's not UEFI compliant, it's probably because the computer is trying to find something on it to boot. People had the same problem with a certain model of SteelSeries mouse (the Xai, I think it was), because the computer was searching for something bootable in the mouse's memory.

on my dv6t-6100 at least, coolest setting does not throttle the CPU down below the base clock of 2200mhz (2720qm), although it does prevent it from going into turbo.

running on coolest mode allows for a much higher overclock on my 6770m holding temperature constant (900/1000mhz + coolest mode runs at about 75C CPU and 78C GPU), as opposed to 800/950mhz + performance mode for 84C/78C). so it definitely has its uses in gaming.

I highly doubt they would. Has anyone here ever tried giving gloss black plastic a matte finish? Sandpaper I hear works at about 1200 grit or higher, then a buffing wheel or something.

Is it really that bad? Haven't received mine yet.

I just bought a "mini sandblaster" kit that might do a decent job of "frosting" the plastic. It's basically a little airbrush that shoots aluminum oxide instead of paint.

Reading the whole post I came in conclusion that HP uses two 1080p screens for dv7:

LGD0283 and AUO159D. Is this right? Whats the current model?

Is any difference If I buy the screen from HP as spare part or from another supplier?

It would be more expensive. There really is no reason to get it from HP. The AUO B173HW01 should work fine.

It's actually not that visible unless you look close, but if you do, there are a lot of scratches. I also just like matte plastic a lot better than gloss. Unfortunately, most of the tech industry thinks that glossy black plastic looks good. I think it looks ugly. Probably just me, but still.

Interesting. Upper left is understandable, as that could be broken or not seated latchy thingies, but the lower left is held by a screw. Try removing the rubber thing in the lower left and tightening the screw. Also, apply firm pressure to the upper left corner in an attempt to re-seat the latches.

Aaand well although officially my lappy should've been here on Sept 14, Fedex used their magic and shipped it early as usual ( had to go to their warehouse though, cause I was sleeping when they came and missed the 2 day early delivery). But my DV6tQE is in my hands now.

Things I've noticed right away: Lenovo packaged their y570 waaaay better then HP, I didn't even get the black stylish HP box =\.
There's no "QE" label to be seen anywhere

Also, if you go with steel gray instead of black umber, would the outer material be better, or just different paintjob?
Going to pimp the lappy today, and get rid of HP junk.

The DV7T-6100 came in today. Happy and dissapointed at the same time. It's nice, but still regretting not going with the ENVY 17 3D.

I'm glad I got the steel grey at least. It looks a lot better than the dark umber version they had at best buy (IMO).

I don't like how "clicky" the touch pad buttons are; sounds like I'm playing a game of Sorry every time I click them.

The matte screen is nice, but the 60Hz refresh rate is very noticeable to me, which is one of the reasons I wanted the ENVY. Anyone who says the difference between 60Hz and 120Hz isn't noticeable just doesn't know what their talking about.

I'll probably end up just keeping this though. I'm not going to risk sending it back, getting credited a refund, and then have all the ENVY discounts be over with.

Does anyone know how long it takes them to process a return on average? Where are the returns sent to?

Well it looks as though the upper left is ok now... but the lower left is toast. The screw is tight and it looks like the surrounding area of the bezel in the screw area wasn't strong and the area that the screw was holding down broke away from the bezel. So i'll have a floppy corner unless i get the whole bezel replaced...

Does warranty cover these things? I think i might send it in after the semester is over...

Yeah, I just contacted HP for a return. The label says Memphis, TN.

No, the ENVY doesn't have a matte screen. I don't really care though and probably prefer the clarity of the gloss screen. 99% of the time I am using my laptop inside with a black background behind me, so glare isn't a concern.

Hey guys, I bought DV6-6121tx a couple of days back and i'm loving it (though it overheats a bit while gaming).

I've been having a slight problem lately.
The laptop screen has a bluish tinge on every application (game, wallpaper, videos etc)

I thought it would be gamma problem, and i tried to calibrate display colour. But when i reached the gamma section, and tried to move the slider to change gamma level, some problem occurred and this message was displayed :

" Display Colour Calibration can't calibrate the selected display. The parameter is incorrect."

    Please help me guys !

On 8-2-11, there was a BIOS update that lets you do manual switching. In the BIOS, you can choose either fixed or dynamic graphics switching. Fixed let's you choose and switch without restarting, dynamic on the other hand, doesn't support openGL. If you want openGL support with the 6770m, you have to be in fixed mode. So, the quick answer is yes, it is solved, but it's a little cumbersome.

just a vote in favor of fixed mode. It can switch to the IGP automatically when on battery (or not) and just gives one a level of simplicity and control that I happen to appreciate. personally I don't find it cumbersome, but thats a personal thing. put a link to CCC on your desktop and you can switch it at will, to either mode, when using either power source

Right-click on your desktop and select Display Properties (not the ATI one but the Intel). Then choose the Advanced Mode If prompted.

On Display Tab on the Left, choose Color Enhancement and move the slider of the "Saturation" to +1.. This fixed my colors to 900p screen on dv7!

Thank you! Also, when gaming, does the left palm rest area get hot? Because i Have a dv5 1040ep, and it overheats when gaming, and while surfing on the web.

Please be sincere, because I still don't know if I will buy the ASUS N55 or the HP Dv6-61**.

Honestly, I don't game a lot. The most I do is Lord of the Rings Battle for Middle Earth for about 30 minutes. When I do that, it just gets warm, not hot. By the way, I have a little issue. sometimes when I am typing and I hit b, beats toggles. not always, but sometimes. I am sure I am not hitting other keys. Is there a way to turn off the shortcut and just leave beats on all the time?

There no option in BIOS F1A about "Fixed Graphics" on my dv7-6020ev...

The palm rest gets hot if you keep the fan down while playing games. As long as the fan profile is normal, the left palm rest gets warm, but not hot.
