Can a DV6 owner tell me if this light bleed is normal and is not worth the worry?

Very likely because of the Illuminating logo behind the screen.

Following up on this. Laptop battery is draining much more quickly than it did before. 9 cell, and power saver, and I'm getting ~3 hours, when I used to run about 6-7. Laptop is still running hot, and the fan is constantly on, even with coolsense on quietest.

Is that at startup? If so, yes. That is the glowing HP logo shining through the screen before the panel is on. Basically the same way as the backlight would if the pixel was in the 'white' state, in other words, completely transparent. It seems to me that it would be a fairly simple thing for HP to put something opaque in between the logo and backlight.

I suggest that you reinstall your AMD video drivers...has something to do with CCC. Go to your product homepage and download the latest and install...during the install...it will ask if you want to uninstall the old drivers...say yes...follow through...and then install the new ones...

Its there when the display is off but the system is ON, in other words when the logo is ON.
Should I contact the support, for replacing or something? OR do all the models have this and nothing to worry?

They all have the same "glow". I wonder why HP doesn't put something in between the screen and the logo. Anyway, there is nothing wrong.

They all have it. Like you said, it's only when the display is completely off, otherwise it doesn't bleed through. It won't cause any damage and HP won't do anything about it, so no worries.

Hey this is my first experience with switchable graphics.

I set it to high performance on my game exe's but is there a way to actually know which graphics card is actually currently being used at any moment in time?

Anyone having a problem where plugging a USB drive into the USB 3.0 ports on the dv6/7-6100 series causes autoplay to happen twice per drive?

The High Performance GPU is the AMD GPU, while the "power saving" GPU is the on-die Intel one.

My dv7 was one of the earliest models, and they came with 'fixed' switchable graphics. This means my computer uses 1 GPU all the time unless I tell it to switch.

I can't vouch for how the new system works, unfortunately. I would assume it's the same, but there have been some quirks with dynamic switchable graphics before..

Back when I got my dv7, 3DMark 11 would say my computer used an Intel GPU, even if I was currently using the 6770M. This has since been fixed.
Since there isn't a physical switch or indicator of any kind, I guess you have to hope the software is working correctly.

I'd put the 6770M at about 5x faster than the GMA 3000, depending on the application. So if you're like me and you accidently leave the Intel GPU on and try to launch a game like Rift or The Witcher, you catch on pretty quick.

For me, the CCC icon disappears when the Intel GPU is in use. If you have DSG that may not be the case.

How many partitions do you have on that drive?

I have seen it where autoplay will ask for each partition based upon the media it detects within.

The wireless seems to be REALLY slow on my dv7, regardless of whether I am at home, in Starbucks, or at school. My MacBook Air on the same AP works like a lightning bolt, pages load almost instantly, but my dv7 just drags on, sometimes to the point where pages just keep "loading".

Any ideas what might be causing this?

    Hey guys,

I just got an HP DV7-6100 from HP and it's running great so far.

I have a few questions for you all.

#1: I'm looking to add a 2nd hard drive. I've read that the 2nd HD caddy is included in the 2nd bay from the factory. However, I know I also will need a HD Cable and mounting screws. The only place I've seen the HD Cable is newmodeus, and they want $30+ to ship a freaking cable....
    LINK

Does anyone know where I can get it cheaper? I've seen a few sellers on eBay selling them, but they specify for 1st bay only (the HDcable is super short).

#2: Does this laptop actually support PC3-1333 memory? It appears to have PC3-10700 from the factory (Hyundai Electronics brand). I was just curious because I have an 8 GB kit of Crucial DDR3-1333 and didn't know if it was supported or not. If not, it would just be down-clocked to 1066 anyways.

#1 No - It IS over-priced, but you won't find it anywhere else cheaper... and they are a great reseller.

    #2 PC3-10700 IS 1333MHz memory (667MHz x 2) ... and NO I don't understand the numbering scheme ... CPU-Z reports it as such

well i searched and i'm not finding much discussion on the drivers and software. after a clean install...

do i need to install "Essential System Updates", HP ProtectSmart Hard Drives Protection (i'm guessing i dont need this since i have ssd), HP Quick Launch, HP Software Framework, HP Connection Manager?

what is the program that controls the cooling and cpu speeds? do i need that?

i did a clean install and i went from about 100 processes to around 50 and with a few things installed i'm at 60 now. everything seems to be running just fine but i wanna make sure i have everything installed thats necessary.

oh and going from the 5400 rpm hdd with 100 processes to ssd clean install, oh lawd lol...it's so nice.

And how hp can update UEFI on this laptop when its based on BIOS? Thought one will overcome another, and not live together.

As to UEFI and BIOS on these notebooks, you might want to look at Bios 09.06.11.avi - YouTube.

As to your HP_Tools partition: HP dv6t's & dv7t's are delivered with this partition in place, but it may not have been mapped to a drive letter. Mine was mapped, but I unmapped it immediately. Since then, whenever an HP update has involved writing to that partition, the update "installer" remaps the drive so the OS can complete the writes, but fails to unmap it after it's completed its installations.

I posted this in Switchable Graphics, and don't know how to simply quote it and reference it to other (in case I upset anyone from posting the same question in multiple threads)

I have been trying to play games on 2 Monitors (because the DV6 cannot output to 3 due to the build of the computer).
So far I can get them to run fine on two monitors, only in windowed mode, which is worth it, but since there are 2 monitors, the screen is split right down the middle and it sucks for every single game especially for FPS's.

    Crysis 2 Eyefinity Double-ecran 6870 - YouTube

Now I can set custom resolutions in a game and have it output to a size that fits 3 monitors so that way I can set the window to place the middle on the left monitor and the right on the right monitor.

    Sort of like this:

    (1) [2] [3]

So that I can move the window to show properly on 2,3 and don't care about 1. So that means if I play a shooter I can see the crosshairs on 2 normally but get an extra view to my right.

The problem is that Windows sets the maximum width of any widow to be the maximum of the combined values of the monitors. So in other words I can set the game to display 3 x 1080p but windows resizes it to 2 x 1080p

Does anyone know how to override the windows width limit?
    Any suggestions?

I would suggest the third one:

due to the 6770 won't utilize the 2GB

Can anyone suggest how I can search this forum? It always comes back with a blank page for results. I don't seem to have a problem anywhere else online with chrome (tried explorer also). I am signed in.

I am wondering what people think of the DV7T 1600x900 screen. Also, my 500GB Hitachi HDD makes a strong series of clicks periodically when in use, for a few seconds, but 98% of time is quiet.

I have the DV7T - 1080 screen and it's very nice. The size overall I like alot better than the dv6t. Much more comfortable esp. palm rest area very generous. I didn't like the feel of the dv6t but somehow like this one. The hard drive is a toshiba and it makes some clicky noises. Display viewing is fine, can move around without issue. Maybe 60 degrees horizontal i'm guessing. It gets slightly muted/shifty at + 15 degrees vert., but doesn't do that going the other way (down). It's a great screen. Haven't tried outdoors.

I am monitoring the clickiness of the harddrive (normal for 500GB Hitachi?)
and I am curious if people are happy with the standard screen. I still have one week to return.

I would love to know of a clever way to mute the ridiculously loud mouse buttons.

please feel free to message me direct at
    [email protected]

i will never use your contact info ever for anything whatsoever and will delete message and account shortly.

even though I HAVE #3 (well not the 1080p), #2 is probably >$100 cheaper, and you won't EVER notice the difference... now if they replace the 2720 with the 2760 ....

If you can cancel and re-order with the 1GB 6770M, you can save some money. The 2GB upgrade is a scam and makes no difference.

I agree somewhat with the sentiment. It will make no difference on possible top end FPS performance, but could keep low end FPS performance from dropping AS low under higher settings.

For $50, I didn't want to ever wonder if I am getting the most out of it. Plus, who knows what the future holds... I tend to hold on to my laptops longer than I should.

You may notice the difference between 1GB and 2GB under the following two circumstances:
    - You're playing a very old game (e.g. Halo 1 Demo) on max settings on a very large external monitor with a super-high resolution (e.g. 2560x1600)
    - You're playing a newer game under settings that cause it to run at an unplayable speed (e.g. ~8fps) - and the extra memory will only make a difference for a few fps.

But that's it, you won't notice a difference in any real-world scenario.

In other words, a 10% difference.

A task that would take 30 minutes on the slower CPU would take 27.3 minutes on the faster CPU.

Not a make-or-break difference. My guess is you could better increase the performance by closing background applications than by having the faster CPU.

    Hey chucko83,

I was looking at the HP drivers page (linked on first page of this thread), and was pleasantly surprised by how detailed the descriptions were of each software package (when you hit the 'more info' button for each). Were you looking for even more information?

    Sigh...

You have to keep reading... for example, under the Essential System Updates, in the "Fix/Enhancement" section, it says...

Essential System Updates - "KB942914 - FIX: Picture Manager may stop responding when you open the Printer Properties dialog box in Picture Manager in a 64-bit version of Windows 7 or Windows Vista KB2482122 - FIX: 0x0000009F Stop error when you restart a Windows 7-based or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer that has certain Wi-Fi drivers installed KB2502789 - FIX: Fixes where the system cannot finish command "chkdsk C:" as usual with C50 CPU KB2519736 – Adds a fix to a 0x7F BSOD occurring in cross platform systems while performing data transferring test through a wired / wireless network connection. KB2524840 - FIX: 0x000000C4 Stop error occurs when you run the Common Scenario Stress with IO test on a Windows 7-based computer on which Microsoft Virtual PC and Windows Logo Kit are installed"

    Derp.

My post count isn't much higher but I did do a clean Win 7 install without any of those. Haven't noticed anything wrong without them.

Does anyone have the problem sometimes where Windows acts like the Ctrl key is being pressed when it's not?

Sometimes while browsing, typing s suddenly tries to save the page or b make a bookmark.. As if I'm holding down Ctrl. (ctrl+s = save, ctrl+b = bookmark)
Or when I play counter-strike, sometimes the player would be stuck on crouch.
Hitting Ctrl doesn't seem to fix it, but mashing ctrl, shift, alt angrily gets it fixed. I recently read of someone having this problem on another computer, and they said hitting both controls at the same time will fix it. Must've been getting lucky with my angry mashing.

I don't have any steps to reproduce the problem, it just happens randomly. The key itself doesn't look depressed or anything like that. The laptop is brand new, nothing ever spilled on it and there's no dirt.

Ok, I received my DV7TQE about 2 weeks ago and I'm loving it so far. First question is what sort of SSD can I put in it - Sata II or Sata III? Can't really find any definite info on the sata type. I'm considering the Crucial M4 as an option because I have a Crucial in another pc and its been extremely reliable.

Second question - The only thing missing from this pc is a backlit keyboard. I didn't think it would matter too much, but it really does in low light situations. I read somewhere that the Envy keyboard will also fit this machine and could be a replacement. Is this true and where can I purchase one if so?
