I only have six posts, so not sure if I'm worthy enough to comment (I can however read, so I've got that going for me)...

    At any rate...

On your second question, here is a thread which covers that: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...91-modding-dv6t-dv7t-quad-edition-2011-a.html

Doesn't look like they've managed to do it yet...

On your first question, I think Acid is right... Both of the HDD connectors underneath are SATA III. But I can't find the post where that was 'confirmed.' Almost positive there was one though.

Not surprised to hear the ODD is SATA II.

Hi, I am new to this forum. I own HP DV6t quad i7-2820, 8gb, ati 6770, blueray read write. I had no problems with it, but all of a sudden it stopped playing BD. the tech support tried to help with install of drivers and still unable to play, getting code of 0012 and I installed bd adviser from cyberlink site and it passed. The message graphics not supported. Please help needed. The tech support finally asked to run recovery. I don't want to do it. Appreciate your help. Thanks.

I had an exact experience. If you are NOT running the copy of Power DVD 10 originally sent with the laptop, you get the error, ONLY IF you try to play blueray using the 6770... switch to the Intel 3000 HD & it should work okay. I upgraded to Cyberlink media suite 9 ultra, and that is when my problem started. I downloaded the original PowerDVD version on the HP site, reloaded it, and things worked again on BOTH GPUs.

Cyberlink will ultimately claim that the HP 6770 driver is NOT the most recent driver that they require with the version shipped in the upgraded suite.

I have played Blue-ray movies on the 6770m with PowerDVD 11 Ultra. So it's a bit weird that it happens to yours.

Both HP and Cyberlink CS are absolutely worthless ... their answer will always be reload everything (like right!). I stumbled upon what worked for me. I am sure it has to due with mating a specific version of a driver with a specific version of Power DVD. Maybe things got fixed with Power DVD 11. Both my versions are 10, but one is an HP stripped down version, and the other the OEM retail version (that shipped with Suite 9, ultra). I am running the DNA drivers NOW, but when I experienced the problem, I was using drivers that I got from the HP Site (originally what shipped, or updated... I am NOT sure). Now that I understand the issue, I deal with it and haven't played around with it.

I have a dv7t and I also have problems using Fraps when the speaker volume is more than minimal (subwoofer interacting with the disk write operations?) Try getting anyone to admit to THAT issue... (but believe me, it is VERY real and repeatable)

Vgreddy - I would try reloading the original HP driver version that shipped with your unit. I KNOW HP has released at least one update. This would provide you insight and ammunition if you need to deal with CS. I know mine did work when I first got my dv7t

Hi, I have a new dv7t 1080p screen since 2 weeks. I'm liking it alot more than the dv6t I had.

Is it normal for the 500GB/7200 Hitatchi HDD to make clicky noises? It is so intermittent that it makes me question it. It will make the noise perhaps 10 times a day with 8 hour use. It will make a series of clicks as it's reading I believe. It doesn't sound terrible, but it is definitely is quite audible. Much louder than the typically barely audible scratchy/crunchy sort of noises the HDD makes. If there is a wiki or list of what I should do within the 21 day period to give this a thorough test please point me that way! Thanks!

I notice that HP changed the option for full HD display on the dv7t Quad from:
    17.3" diagonal Full HD HP Anti-glare LED Display (1920 x 1080)
    to
17.3" Full HD BrightView Infinity LED (1920x1080)

Is the BrightView Infinity the glossy screen?

Are you sure it is the hard drive itself? I know my bluray drive player will sometimes make clicking sounds and the frequency is similar to what you have mentioned. If you are sure its the HDD and not the bluray drive player, I would contact HP. That said, if anyone has any idea how to make the bluray drive stop making that clicking noise when there's no disk in there, that would be great.

Wasn't that the one where it has an edge to edge screen? I heard that it gives off a bit more glare (and I remember it having a decent amount of glare when I used my friends HP with an infinity display). There was also an issue with dust getting behind it a few years back, which is why I think they discontinued it ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-pavilion-notebooks/306513-dust-infinity-display.html) They might have fixed the dust issue though, but I don't know. I am not positive if the new infinity is even the same as the old one. The names do match though.

I am so glad I got the 1080p antiglare screen (it's just a matte screen) just in time. It is very good, even when I bring it down to 1366x768. The viewing angles are superb + no glare. The display can be brought up to be quite bright as well. Maybe you can ask customer service to see if it's still available if you call them directly?

Does anyone have and videos or pictures of a game being played or a color picture on the 1080p Dv6 screen? All the videos I see on youtube are of the 720p screens.

Exactly the same problem where there was NO 1080p video demo about DV6. I have been trying to make one but I haven't had time yet. I will try to make one and share it "soon".

Thank you for the link to the dust issue. When I click on the Help Me Choose for the display, currently HP is showing:
Strange that HP does not tell you anything about the Infinity display. The description is merely a long description of how you can setup three monitors and needing blu-ray to watch full HD. Either way, sounds like the Infinity display is a glossy screen which I dislike using on any computer screen.

I know from reading posts in the Sager forum a few months ago that the matte screens are in short supply. My guess is HP pulled the matte screen option due to the wait times for customers were going to take too long before they could fill the order and ship it to the customer.

In the mean time, I will consider my other options or wait for the option to return to the dv7t Pavilion Quad.

Thank you for your helpful reply.

    Hope this helps: 1920x1080p Screen

This is the dv7t, but it should be the same type of screen as the dv6t anti glare. Sometimes the colors are a bit off in the video (bad video camera), so I took some static pictures as well.

My old laptop, which had a glossy screen, would definitely act more like a mirror in the same position. I got "used to it", but this is definitely better.

IMHO definitely NOT a good idea at all. Apart from being horrible stuff to deal with in tricky places it is necessary for the faceplate to be removed to get inside the machine to do anything. It is actually very easy to take these laptops apart with a bit of care if you look at the manual. I've done it several times. The faceplate sits inside the surround on several little lugs. Maybe yours is just not seated right. May be worth looking into that?

I have a relatively new dv-6 that I bought back in July. The specs are in my sig. All of a sudden, when my laptop goes under load, the fan makes a weird whirring sound, not like it usually sounds like. It kind of sounds like a vibrating noise. It is coming from the fan on the left hand side, near the hdmi input. I have a laptop cooler, so I don't think this is normal. Does anyone know what could be causing this or how to fix the problem?

So, I will be joining this crowd in the next week. :) Picked up a DV7t w/6770M, i5-2410M, 6GB RAM, 500GB HDD and that beautiful matte 1080p screen. So, my questions are this, what battery life are you guys getting with the 9-cell battery and are there any performance tweaks I should know about? (Obviously, I will be OC'ing, but other than that, any thing odd?)

lol, you need advice? if it's anything like the dv6 it's very straight forward. i didn't change any setting, swapped in the ssd, booted from disc, clean install win7 ultimate...

mine had trouble booting for reasons i can't explain, so i booted from w7 disc and went into command prompt to add something... also i needed to jump on my other computer to get the wireless nic driver. everything else was just fine

Well, I'm hoping I don't need advice, but not too proud to think I might. :)

It just seems with laptops you sometimes can't rebuild it like it came to you when doing a fresh install. Of course some of that is good...

Actually, quick question... sounds like you changed out the HDD for the SSD. I was thinking, any reason why I should move the HDD to the second bay to put the SSD in the first bay? Or can I tell the BIOS to boot from the second drive and just install it there?

i'd probably keep the second drive unplugged for the install just to be safe.

ah i jsut reread what you wrote. i have no idea. haha, good luck. (you probably know the dv6 has only 1 drive) why not put the ssd in the primary drive position and the other in the secondary? keep the secondary unplug though for install.

I think you're right... take the first drive out, put the SSD in there... do the install, then put the HDD in the second bay once everything is working peachy.

Hello, is there any way to get 1280x720 running on the DV6-61xx [Monitor/SEC4251 (native 1366x768); HD 6770M switchable] without the use of 3rd party programs?
As for now, only the 800x600; 1024x768; 1360x768 and 1366x768 are available..
When creating a custom resolution using the Intel control panel, it says the monitor doesn't support this resolution.

Do I just have to wait/hope for a BIOS update?

    Edit: Please help
After installing 11.10 v3 preview driver only, following settings were added: 1280x600; 1280x720; 1280x768.
After restarting, I they were gone..

I think the difference would be so minimal you would never notice. We're talking a difference of 0.2 Ghz. And it's not like SC2 is the hog that some of the newer games are. Now if your getting into newer FPS's, the faster the better, but we're still talking a minimal difference. You want to be sure to have the discrete graphics card.

Definitely save the 200$ if the only difference is the CPU. The difference is negligible. Now if the 200$ is actually going to a 1080p display, then get that one.

First, prioritize getting the 1920x1080 display. Get whichever one has the 1920x1080 display because the 1366x768 display is mediocre.

Don't worry about the processor, it's a relatively small difference.

Hello. I have the DV7t i7 quad core with 8 GB RAM. Am doing video editing with Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 and am getting some strange artifacts when I play my clips in Premiere vs. when I play them in, say, Windows Media Player. I think it might be a memory issue, because I have a lot of clips loaded into the project. I have a couple of questions about memory. One is what the max memory is for the machine--somewhere on the HP site I saw that it is unlimited with Win7. But the 8GB chip is like $1k on the HP site. I called memory4less and they have one for $388. What are people's thoughts about increasing the memory? Are there other things I can do to optimize without voiding my warranty? Thanks.

Someone else might know otherwise, but I think the chipset in the dv7t is the GM65, and this page from Intel says maximum 8GB.

I'm still not positive about all this though.

Actually, the memory controller is integrated into the CPU. And even for the entry-level i7, sandy-bridge, quadcore [2630QM] supports 16 GB.

Crucial has a good price of $616 (2) (and they accept Bill Me Later). Waiting to hear back what the brand name is:

    CT2KIT102464BF1339 - 16GB kit (8GBx2), 204-pin SODIMM , DDR3 PC3-10600 from Crucial.com

OEMPCWorld has an even lower price of $589 (2). They said the brand would be "either Gigaram or Samsung." They do accept trade-in for your old memory (at about 40%-60% of their current sale price for the same item).

The Memory4Less price is $776 (2) and they said theirs is Samsung.

This Corsair on Ebay is the least expensive by far at $379 (2). And it does have a lifetime warranty:

Glad you got your answer. Sub $400 seems like a good deal.

My fn+b key command for Beats Audio doesn't seem to be working anymore. Is there a way to re-enable it?
