That site is out of stock until the end of February on the cable. I think the only option now to get the cable is to buy the whole caddy, cables, screws kit from HP.

I just did this and got $86.50 credited back on a dv6tqe. Def call the number they won't do anything over the live chat thing. The lady was very helpful and it was painless.

Guys I'm stuck with going between a 2GB 7690 on the dv6tqe vs. a 1GB 7690 on the Envy 17. Is there much of a difference in performance. I was reading for the 6770 there isn't much of a difference between 1gb and 2gb.

    Thanks

Someone previously told me that the 2Gb version might only be better in the future if more programs/games are written to take advantage of the extra VRam or if you run multiple monitors.

For people with the dv6t laptop, can you please answer these questions?

    1. Any problems with the wifi card? Does it disconnect you, take a long time to re-connect?
    2. Any heat/noise issues?
    3. Can you update drivers from the manufacturers website or only from the HP site (like the graphic card drivers?)
    4. Any issues experienced?

Thank you very much for the help.

I have a couple of gripes with the WiFi card in my dv7tqe. One is that it is a single band 802.11 b/g/n. My home network is setup on a 5GHz dual band router where I have a total of about 10 devices connected (movie and music server, computers, iPhones, etc.). I have about half on 5GHz "N" (300Mbps) and the other half (because they are "G" only devices) on 2.4GHz "G" (54 Mbps) and everything worked fine. The new dv7tqe will only see the "G" network because it will only do "2.4GHz "N" (single band) and I don't want to back my whole network down to 2.4GHz "N" so it connects to the "G" network at 54Mbps. The thing that gets me the most is that I can't go out and buy a $25 "dual band" Intel Advanced-N 6230 card because it is not on the HP "white list" in the BIOS.

But you can upgrade it if you use a modded BIOS? But otherwise, is the connectivity good?

Yeah, I'm looking for a modded BIOS as I type and I already have the Intel Advanced-N 6230 on the way. To answer your question, yes it connects and stays connected fine, just at "G" speeds.

I should keep my ranting and venting to a minimum.

I'm not so sure you should. It irritates me that for a $1000 laptop, HP doesn't give us the option to get a dual band card in the laptop when we configure it in the first place. I recently had a Vaio with the same oversight. I would love to know what these manufacturers are thinking.

As a side note, it looks like most people that are ordering the dv6t are not getting the bluetooth option... is there a reason for this? Or do people just want to save the $15? I ordered mine with bluetooth, so hopefully there's not some problem I wasn't aware of...

Never even thought about the wireless card until your posts.... thank you very much!
Not only did it bring attention to my new notebooks network/web browsing ability but also made me look at my long ignored service provider.

They were charging me $43 a month for 3Mb/s (tested at 2.86) service. Called them and will be now getting 6Mb/s service with a new router for $29.95 a month.

Originally got this service for $12.95/mo but since then(3+ yrs ago), I've added another PC and an XBox 360 live gamer to the bandwidth, as they quietly upped my price after the promo period. No wonder at night I have to wait a long time for google to just open....

Are the WiFi cards in the HPs located in slots under the bottom case like the memory and HDs and like my OLD Evo 610c?

On the dv7tqe, it is located under a "T" shaped cover on the bottom of the unit. If you look at it with the battery closest to you bottom up, the hard drive bays are under the top of the "T" and the memory and the WiFi card are under the base of the "T", WiFi card is next to the memory.

I haven't opened mine up yet but I think you use the same latch release that the battery uses. You slide one way to take the battery out, slide the opposite way to remove the cover for the HDDs, Memory and WiFi card.

Let me know if you ever come across a "modded BIOS" for the dv7tqe.

Is changing the wireless cards for these laptops fairly easy? Also, have there been any reports of modded bios bricking laptops? Finally, If I am not playing online games or doing a lot of streaming, am I going to notice a huge leap if I were to upgrade wireless cards to what others seem to be using?

Thanks in advance for any help given.

I installed the SSD in the 2nd bay and during Windows installation chose the SSD. the reason for me to do this is, in case i need to send the HP in for repairs, i can just remove the SSD in the 2nd bay and not touch the other bay. I might be pessimistic here.

Also i do not see any performance difference in using the 2nd bay (Please correct me if i am wrong)

Maybe I'm too old school from my desktop computer building days (when Windows XP was the new OS). I thought the OS had to be on the primary controller, I didn't know you could choose in Windows 7.

I have the bluetooth option. Got mines back in June 2011. I’m running all my devices on 2.4Ghz, but my connection speed is always over 100Mbs. So I have no need to mod my bios for a new wifi card. I do see you point though. My router supports simultaneous dual band up to 450Mbps. It would be nice to see that speed on my network. One feature this wifi card has is nice, but I have no need for it, is it can create an hotspot. Intel calls it My WiFi. I connected my smartphone and tablet just to see if it works. I guess you can use it to extend your wireless network. My router covers the entire house and outside.

Yeah, for anything outside the house (internet, email, updates, etc.), 2.4GHz "G" (up to 54Mbps) or "N" (single band, up to 145Mbps) is more than enough because most people can't max out their router with even the fastest internet connection (~20Mbps) but for streaming music, movies, large files, etc. inside the house from a music/movie server or computer to computer, dual band "N" (up to 300Mbps-450Mbps), it is a noticeable difference. Plus, my neighborhood is so polluted with 2.4GHZ routers, I found myself switching channels just to keep from fighting for signal strength (too many on the same channel).

I just wish HP gave me a choice for an 802.11 a/g/n 5GHz when I went I configured my dv7tqe on-line, or at least listed what the two choices actually were. One was a Realtek RTL8188CE (no bluetooth), the other an Intel 1030 (with bluetooth), both single band 802.11 b/g/n. I went with the cheaper option for two reasons, I didn't need Bluetooth and I THOUGHT I could put whatever WiFi card I wanted in the dv7tqe without having to modify anything.

I agree with you on that. I wish I can switch to 5Ghz to isolated the conjested 2.4Ghz bandwidth. The only reason I opt for the bluetooth was for my microsoft bluetooth mouse. I love this little thing. Battery last forever. I used a small bluetooth dongle on my last laptop. Now, I don't need a dongle. If HP do release a bios that allow for a dual band wifi card, I have to find one with blutooth.

Why not just add another 802.11n router to connect N devices to that cannot do 5GHz. I bet that would actually be cheaper than the WiFi card to put in the laptop! :)

    Good luck with it.

BTW, my 180GB SSD arrived today. Still waiting on the dv7tQE to ship.

Intel Advanced-N 6230 Dual Band 5GHz 802.11 a/g/n plus you would have WiDi (Intel's Wireless Display) and Intel's My WiFi. You can find this card for less than $25

The only "N" device I have that WON'T connect to 5GHz is my brand new dv7tqe. I haven't seen many "N" routers for less than $25. I just bought an Intel Advanced-N 6230 dual band 802.11 a/g/n brand new on eBay for less than $20 shipped. I'm that determined to find a "modified" BIOS that allows me to install the card.

Now a proud owner of a dv7t (going from a dv6tqe). Sacrificed the looks of the Envy 17 and probably a better screen for this. Going to get a SSD and 1gb more in graphics (don't know if that makes much difference).

But hey, the silver dvxt's are good looking also and have beats :)

HP Pavilion dv7t Quad Edition customizable Notebook PC
    • steel gray
    • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    • 2nd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2670QM (2.2 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 3.1 GHz
    • 2GB AMD Radeon(TM) HD 7690M GDDR5 Discrete Graphics(TM) [HDMI, VGA]
    • FREE UPGRADE to 8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 660GB 7200 rpm Dual Drive (160GB SSD/500GB 7200 rpm) with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    • No Additional Office Software
    • No additional security software
    • 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    • 17.3-inch diagonal Full HD Anti-glare LED-backlit Display (1920 x 1080)
    • FREE UPGRADE to Blu-ray player & SuperMulti DVD burner

    1) Yeah, kind of when you're playing flash, especially Hulu or Netflix. Not as severe as I thought. Coolsense is very useful for turning up the fan speed. I usually keep it on coolest regardless of the condition. And try not to keep the laptop on your bed etc.
    2) I don't see why you can't.
    3) Hmmm...I had this one issue that happened a couple of weeks ago where I had a BSOD after booting and it would take like 5 minutes to start. Did a system restore and removed avast and has worked flawless. Owned it since July, that's the only time it freaked me out.

And, HP didn't do good job with the switchable graphics feature. The AMD driver fails at times with the switchable graphics feature on. It's better to disable it and manually switch the AMD on when you want to game or watch hd movies.

Besides, that it's a sweet laptop, well worth the money and built is amazing.

Hi guys.I am an owner of an dv7t also.Just some question if I may:

    1. Where can i check what version of GPU drivers I have?Because i cannot find anything where I can switch the graphics.
    2. When I received the laptop I only had one partition of ~700 GB.I managed to shrink it by 50% and create another partition. The question are following
2.1 Why I cannot shrink the C: partition more????It is stuck on 350 GB and i want to shrink it to about 160BG(only programms and software)
2.2 When I shrinked the partition I somehow managed to make the disks Dynamic instead of Basic( the line in the hdd management is not blue but yellow)Is this bad?And if yes how can I fix it?
    3. Fingerprint Reader
I asked before in a different topic but still. The finger print reader on my computer is acting strange,I think. When i unlock the PC it is blinking for about 2-3 minutes, after what it stops.I cannot make anything to make it stop?Is this fixable?
3.1 How can i store a password on simplepass?
E.g. I go to gmail.Put my username and password.a simplepass window pops up asking me to save the password.I save it.But when i am again on gmail and I am swaping my finger on the reader nothing happens. It asks me to swype the finger but it does absolutely nothing, even if my password is stored in simplepass(i've checked and it was there)

    Regards.

Makes sense. Please post info when you locate the modified bios. Always nice to have options.

My Airport Extreme router has 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz channels. Am not sure yet how fast my N connection will be with the new HP. But I connect at 160-240MHz on the 24Ghz channel with my current laptop so it may not be an issue in my situation.

BTW, I received a 'shipped' notice just moments ago - on Jan 11 at 9:24 pm (TONIGHT!) FedEx picked up my laptop in Shanghai, CN. Obviously that was 'local' time in China. :)

If it doesn't end up on a deserted island with Tom Hanks or stuck on a proverbial "slow boat from China", I should have it in a few days. The original order acknowledgment indicated that it would be built on Jan 17th. So like many others have experienced, it appears to be a bit early.

My Corsair Force GT 180GB drive arrived yesterday. Hopefully the install kit (cable) will be here by the time the laptop arrives.

Christmas in January in North Carolina!

I had my dv7tqe in hands on the 4th day after FedEx picked it up.

Keep me posted on your connection speeds, maybe there is something I'm missing or need to do different.

Where did you get your kit and cable from and how much was it shipped? If it was from HP, do you have a part number?

    Thanks...

The part number is 641306-001 and it includes a caddy, drive screws, caddy screws, short cable, and long cable.

Here's a couple of coupon codes I found for the HP parts store. Don't know if they work but it can't hurt to give em a try.
    inandout - 10% off
    SAVE15HP - $15 off $75 purchase
    SVP471394 - $10 off $50 purchase

Thanks govtdog but the codes didn't work.

The kit was $35.10 and shipping was $11.25 >> $46.35 not including tax! and all I really need is the 2nd HDD cable. I guess I should've done the HP upgrade to the 160GB SSD / 500GB HDD ($240) when I ordered.

I am not even certain I have one that will work. I bought this one:

    2nd HDD Caddy & Cable for HP dv7-4000, dv7-5000, dv7t SE, dv7tQE [HP-dv7-4000] - $38.55 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks

which is both a cable and a caddy. Yes I know that I don't need the caddy. But this was the only listing they had at newmodeous.com that looked like it would work. THe cable is 5.5" long - not sure if that is correct for this application. But I should know soon enough when the laptop arrives.

It was $38.55 plus shipping. Total was around $45. A bit pricey...but what you gonna do? I did some searching on the HP site but I didn't find anything that looked promising.

Doesn't look good. Did you see the print in RED in the link you provided? I don't think the kit you ordered has the longer cable you need. I hope the description is wrong.

Hard Drive Caddy and Cable Connector Kit for the HP Pavilion dv7-4000, dv7t-4000, dv7-5000, dv7t-5000, dv7t SE Select Edition, dv7t QE Quad Edition. (please note that this is not compatible with the dv7t-6000 Series / dv7t-6000 Quad Edition Series. Please click on this link for the dv7t-6000 series. )

The blue link on the site links to the cable you need (I see they are out of stock right now).
