Yeah, the color is nice. It's as close to black as you can get without it being black. The brushed look is nice as well.

Build construction is pretty decent. The teardown and removal of the logic board was precarious, as the silver strip of plastic that wraps around the bottom case is INCREDIBLY thin, but it was flexible enough to get the board out without damage.

The keyboard flex is only annoying if you're showing someone "look how much flex this has" and has no effect on typing.

    The 1366x768 screen is average.

The 6770M performance is incredible. I play Rift, and this laptop gets about 5-6 more FPS on Ultra settings at 1080P on my LCD than my 3 year old gaming desktop (OC'd e2160 @ 3.2ghz, 4gb ddr2, G92 GeForce 8800GTS, G.Skill SSD).

Switchable graphics integration is great. The fan does turn on during heavy loads, but if you're playing a game the sound should drown it out. I've heard much worse.

Touchpad and multitouch gestures (two finger scrolling) as as close to macbook quality as I've seen on a Windows laptop. This is coming from a 15" macbook pro unibody owner.

Out of the box I was playing with it last night at about 50% battery life, which is ships at. I got about 2.5 hours of use out of it before I took it downstairs to recharge. I'm guessing 3.5 to 4.5 hours with just wifi/general browsing will be normal.

As other people have said, there is tons of bloatware. PC Decrapifier and some manual registry work comes in handy here.

I like it. If I didn't have a DV7t on the way I'd probably keep it and deal with the low resolution screen.

Thanks man. Generally, I don't like stuff in dark, black colors (except for dressy shoes) but this one is nice. :)

Thanks again for the information your providing us with, its great to know. When you get a chance could you comment on how the DV6T is to handle and carry around? Do you find yourself struggling to hold it or is there a nice grip to it? Gracias Mucho

Nope, it isn't heavy. I don't know how much heavier it is than my 15" macbook pro, but I doubt more than a pound. I can comfortably carry it with one hand facing down and not worry about dropping it.

The AC adapter, though, is a 120W brick. They're on the bigger side of the adapter spectrum, but not ridiculous like some of the older Dell XPS or Inspiron 9400 bricks.

Sweet, I was just worried how it would handle in on hand, but exactly like you said is what I was hoping for. The adapter being large isn't really a turn-off to me because more than likely it will just sit in my dorm all next year anyway.

How many FPS do you get in Rift with AA activated? I only get 16 FPS with my DV6(ATI 5650 OCed).

    Just took a look.

This is at 1920x1080 on the stock "Ultra" setting.

    No AA: 20 FPS
    Edge Smoothing: 18 FPS
    Supersampling: 13 FPS

Keep in mind, this is hanging out near the auction area in Sanctum fully zoomed out. Probably 30ish people in the area.

Though those numbers aren't optimal gaming numbers, its pretty impressive that this "mid range" card and lowest-end sandybridge quad core can pump it out. Frame rates are very usable on high. And, if using the DV6t's native resolution, you can probably get away with everything on ultra and edge smoothing, maybe even supersampling.

$864 with the extra 9 cell

with tax and recycling(I'm in CA) came out to $950

I used a 30% off coupon and though for $42 extra a 9 cell was worth it.

Hey everyone, this is my first post in this very informative forum and with that I'd just like to ask if anyone can post temps of this amazing machine

I know some people have said that the device runs very cool even on beds and sofas but some hard evidence from HWmoniter would clear any doubt in this area.

    thanks

So I was doing some googling to see if I could find a backlit keyboard mod for the dv7tqe, and I had the idea to replace the standard keyboard with an Envy 17 keyboard, which is backlit. So I brought up the service manuals for both laptops, and from the looks of it, the Envy 17 keyboard could fit perfectly in a dv7tqe. And just like Rip said, the dv7tqe even has a 4-pin connecter slot to hook up the backlight. I took some screen shots of both keyboards in the service manual:

The first is the Envy 17, the second is the dv7tqe

It's the kind of coupon that took me 40 minutes on the phone to get, and she would not tell me the coupon code, but I saw it on my invoice. (the coupon did not work online anyway)

I don't know about humblebeast, but my CSR spent a LONG time coming up with a coupon that would give me nearly my desired 30% ($408 in my case) that stacked with the $150. You better believe I maxed out her satisfaction survey afterward. I took the position that I'd buy two computers for $558 off or I'd buy none for $408 off, and they came within $8 of my price using existing (non-publicized) coupons so I placed the two orders.

I was not so fortunate Thursday when I wanted to combine the $400 off secret coupon with $250 in instant rebates. That one got kicked up the chain of command (no, I didn't really want it brought to the attention of people who had real authority, but it snowballed fast on me), and they called me back late Friday to tell me that the decision was that no coupon would stack with the $100 additional instant rebate. (and they didn't actually say if the 3379 coupon was still valid in April)

Now that it seems as though it's safe again to buy the dv6 and dv7, you may want to link to HP via Fatwallet. I bought a dv7 a few days ago with the 30% coupon and got $32.76 cash back on a $909.99 purchase. (Fatwallet says "up to 5%" back from HP, and it looks like that means 3.6% cash back.)

The Fatwallet page for the HP Home Store used to show the 30% off coupon link for the dv7 but doesn't anymore. It may still work. But the 30% off coupon link for the dv6 is still there.

You can't cash out for a few months, but Fatwallet is legit. Hey, 3.6% off is like a free Radeon or Bluetooth upgrade!

FatWallet Cash Back Details - HP Home Store

In other news, my Amex Open Savings 5% credited to my account quickly, and it was 5% of the entire amount charged to my Amex card so I got 5% back on the tax too. (couldn't get fatcash because I placed the order on the phone)

According to this thread there are 2 sata III ports and 4 sata II. At least thats what has been talked about when discussing the sandy bridge sata issue.

here's a pic of temps with a clean win7 ultimate install running a few programs with ATI gpu running: [IMG]

using the onboard intel graphics the temps were around 40 degrees celsius and it remains quite cool to the touch. I ordered a Newegg.com - Thermaltake Ixoft Fanless Notebook Cooling Pad Model R15ON01 cooler pad anyway.

(i don't have the coolsense software installed btw anyone know where to download?)

clean install went ok for win7 ultimate msdn version with sp1, although you will need to have the intel wireless/realtek ethernet drivers on a usb stick/cd, then you can get everything else once you are connected.

fingerprint reader driver install and can see in device manager but no software i can find yet/how to turn it on. (drivers/package linked to in first post doesn't seem to include interface/work)

ubuntu 10.10 also installed cleanly but trying to configure the switchable graphics using ucc .5 (ubuntu control center) and using the ati glfxr proprietary drivers is known to cause some issues, still not getting ucc .5 to install correctly, more later if anyone interested in ubuntu on this machine.

I want to install Ubuntu on my soon to be delivered DV7tqe, using some sort of free visualization software. Do you have to enable any settings in the bios on the new DV6/7 to get that going or is it already turned on. I guess it could depend on what version of Windows 7 your machine comes with.

any idea on what my chances would be of getting a refund on the order i placed and had to pay for the difference between the old free 6gb and the 8gb? even though i used the old 30% off coupon that saved $25 more than the new coupon is offering.

Im about to pull the trigger on this HP dv7-4295us notebook and just want to inquire if anyone knows if the dual drive is raid configurable?Im thinking of upgrading the drive from 5400rpm to 7200rpm drives. Is there anything I should be thinking about in regards to this upgrade? Other than making the restore disc is the process simple?

That probably depends on the rep you speak to to. Try to make it sound like you're considering cancelling/returning your order.
