This thread is definitely the only reason I'm still sane since ordering my HP dv7t Quad Edition on 3/21. I can't wait for it to come in. Thanks for all of the info and insights everyone, I feel better equipped to gauge my new toy when it's in.

Special props to Ripwind -- you're just an amazing contributor to this forum imo. +1 rep for sure.

I'm psyched for the new comp but, I'm very disappointed that I didn't get the upgraded graphics card due to some mis-communication with the sales rep on the phone, but at the point I realized it was already a few days in and I didn't want to delay the build date any further, which in hindsight wouldn't have really mattered due to all these delays anyway... >.<

Do you guys think it will make a significant difference? I plan on using this for playing Rift at the very least...

I would definitely try to cancel it and re-order, you're most likely going to be using this laptop for a while and dont want to live regretting this decision for years. The 6770 is a MUCH faster video card and a must-have for anyone planning on gaming.

agreed, worth the extra wait (unless you have a pressing need now) to get a much better graphics card for 25 bucks.

    Good luck!

Yea... I should have canceled it and just reordered when I called them after I realized the discrepancy, I'm ALREADY regretting it so I can't imagine dealing with that every time I look at the thing haha. I'll probably call them tonight when I get home from work.

I was so irritated when I realized the error, which is why I normally like placing orders online so I can read through it in it's entirety versus over the phone, but with HP it's easier to get them to apply more coupons over the phone >.>

As for the pressing need -- not really, I'm just tired of not having a laptop to work with and waiting another 2-3 weeks seems daunting, but apparently well worth the wait for upgraded graphics.

I'll let you guys know how it goes! Thanks!

On an unrelated note, has anyone done any disk benchmarking? I'm curious as the perf differences between the 720/5400 and the 640/7200. If anyone is interested, you can use hdtune

    TIA!

Ok well they said I got 2-day shipping  but she said no one could add the 15% coupon too it :( . She "guaranteed me" it would be shipped tomorrow so if its not Im calling and acting alot more angry and try multiple calls back to back to get the 15% off.

4 CNET users and Alatest gave it a pretty good review.

32" is a little big unless you are going to be sitting a distance away.

23" monitors seem to be the best bang for the buck.

Thanks for the # and menu options. Repped! Agreed to survey, on the line now waiting for response on price adjustment... Connecting me to resolutions (didn't ask for this but whatever; said it was because my build was custom)... Talked to resolutions and they said they will make and "exception" and credit my account with the difference ($22.49). WIN!

    Do it!

I use a Philips 32PFL6704D/F7B 32" 1080 120Hz LCD myself. I love it. I run both my PC, PS3, and XBox 360 to it. Your best bet, IMO, is to wall-mount it (With a cheap articulating mount) to the wall above your desk, if you have one. Saves some desk space for sure.

You'll have a hell of a time finding a hutch that fits with your desk though. You'll definitely want it on some sort of stand elevating it, as you'll be looking down at it at an uncomfortable angle if it's sitting straight on your desk.

Sounds like you did already, but I just wanted to reiterate: Cancel and order one with the HD 6770M. The extra time lost is worth the wait.

You'll be floored at the performance you get in Rift on that machine. At high settings @ 1080P with the 6770 and i7-qm2630 I can push 35FPS+ (environmental shadows only - not full). At Ultra settings I'm getting in the low 20's, or even higher if the card is overclocked.

Skip out on the AA in Rift though. It's implemented pretty poorly. You may be better off forcing it through the ATI tools instead.

Finally got my new DV7tqe today. Here are my first impressions:

The color is awesome. It looks nothing at all like the ugly brown you see in the early photos and videos. In person, the brushed metal finish is more of a stealthy black, with a hint of brown when held in the light. I really like how the trackpad sort of blends into the finish when it's not lit up. The trackpad buttons do emit a bit of a click, but they seem solid and function well.

The switchable graphics couldn't be easier to use. The monitor is pretty much the same as the old model, not bad but could have better contrast levels.

Overall the build quality of the new DV7 seems to be good. The only fit and finish issue I noticed, is that there is a small gap around the upper bezel, underneath the new speaker bar. At first I thought it might not have been snapped in properly, but I guess that's just how it is.

I'll have more later. I'm gonna burn the restore disks and then start to dig a little deeper.

Does anyone have problems with their usb 3.0 ports?? A few of my friend's dv6 like to turn off for like a sec causing like their external mouse to skip around or corrupting data transfer after running for awhile.

Their intel chipset are B3 and using driver 2.0.34.0 for their usb 3.0. They are using usb 2.0 devices on them.

I'm on hold right now trying to get something like that :) The guy told me that he could give me the free upgrade to 8gb ram if I cancel the order, but the coupon (30%) doesn't apply anymore. Then I told him is there anything he can do because of this, and he put me on hold.

Is it just me or do I feel like every time I call a call center, I feel like I'm talking to the same rep? or do they all just sound the same? :D

EDIT: They couldn't do anything for me :( Boo.

Hey guys.. Just got my DV7 today (a day early, even though it was in customs for over 2 days!). I am in love with it. It is hard for me to do a performance comparison since the machine its replacing is a 5 year old 15.6" gateway with single core 2Ghz processor with 1 gig of ram, and a 256mb radeon xpress graphics card... So needless to say this thing is quite the improvement.

Like everybody else is saying, the color and brushed metal finish is sweet. I also have to say that I was expecting it to be a lot heavier and harder to lift with one arm, but it is not that bad and is easy to grip. The fingerprint thing is sweet, easy to set each finger to open a different program or site. The touch pad is great and easy to use. I find the webcam quality to be good as well.

I don't find there to be much flex under the arrow keys, I guess if you really bang on it but it should never be an issue. Same goes for the heat to the left of the touch pad, sure its there but its not bad at all.

I love the huge screen. A higher resolution obviously would have been a nice option to have, but I would prob use 900p anyways for most things. The beats audio and the speakers + sub sound great. The new speaker under the screen helps listening to music when you are actually typing on the computer, and projects upwards much better then the speakers on the front.

Like I said earlier, I'm prob biased coming from such a different computer, but this laptop is pretty much perfect.I would take pictures or something, but don't have much of a camera at the moment.

One question.. I want to do a clean install, but I want to make sure I can get the coolsense software and the fingerprint software when I am installing drivers and software. Are they both in the SwSetup folder in the C: drive?

    Thanks

btw: I ordered on the 13th with est build date on the 25th. Ended up shipping on the 29th with regular shipping.

    Hi guys,

I just received my DV7T QE. It is AWESOME. I won't go into the specs and performance as it's been covered here by others. Posting a couple of pics of the notebook (for the color). I was really worried about the color as some people had said it looks awful. But I have to say, the color is wonderful. It is a dark brown color and the photos don't do it justice - it's really hard to capture the colors on this computer. The notebook looks really sleek. Love it!

Yea worst thing about this computer is the wait time(checking the order status several times a day haha), without this forum I would have gone insane. I was also worried about a laggy graphics card or something like one user had in this forum with his dv6tqe. I have my HDMI cables coming tomorrow, so I'll be seeing how video playback looks on my 61" tv for movies and what not. :D

Was just putting in an order for the dv6tqe and adding on the blu-ray player. With the $375 coupon, it seemed pretty reasonable. Then I discovered the dv7tqe includes the blu-ray player, and the exact same configuration was the exact same price. So I'd get the bigger monitor for free... not a bad deal! Too bad the build date now is showing April 25.

You might be onto something there. Anybody been delayed without the 9 cell, or anybody have a 9 cell delivered already?
My dual battery configuration isn't delayed yet, but it isn't scheduled to build until 4-8.

I made an order for a DV7 on the first day with 6-cell and 9-cell (2 batteries). Have a tracking #. Fed Ex says I should receive by Wednesday.

I think the "part shortage" is the B3 chip. Intel barely got a fix out and is not prepared to handle the huge amount of orders placed to them. HP and others are probably trying to get as many B3s as possible, but you can imagine, Intel first has to get all these B2s back and then ship out B3s which they were never intending to make on such short notice...
I word of advice, it seems if you complain to HP and tell them to escalate your claim you get a tracking # quicker. My orig SHIP date was march 25th. After talking to HP, they said there was a delay and that the new BUILD date was april 8th or something. I complained to HP and now my new SHIP date is the 7th (got a tracking # the day after I complained, didn't even need to call back!), so... See if that help, worst case scenario, is that you get some money back from HP, can't hurt!

somebody said earlier in this thread thread that the batteries were the only products of the dv6 and dv7 that were coming from japan. That may be the reason that there is a bit of a delay with japan being, well... you know.

Looks like hardly anyone is getting it with the SSD option. I am, and my ship date is estimated to be the 11th. Maybe I'll be the first to receive it with an SSD.

I just got the same email about an hour ago. This is a bit frustrating honestly. I would cancel the order, but nothing else really comes close to this price in terms of performance. :/

im looking into the SSD, but since I already placed my order I will probably just install it myself sometime down the line. On a scale of 1-5 can someone tell me how hard an SSD to install?

I already bought one for my January DV7, lightning fast! (got like a 7.6 in the windows system rating, as opposed to the typical 5.9). Very easy to install. The only thing is you need to buy a hardware caddy or drive mount/bracket (people call it a lotta different things). For the original DV7s, newmodeus.com sold replicas of HPs caddy's at half the price. As these new DV7s use new caddies, you will probably have to buy one from HP ($70.00 or something?). Call HP parts, if you complain about the delay you might get a discount, or get it even for free (try complaint resolutions department if you want anything serious to happen). Make sure you install the SSD into drive bay 0 (removing the hard drive originally in drive bay 0 and place the original into bay 1). This will avoid any unforeseen boot issues or BIOS issues. After that obviously you will need to do a clean install of windows and get all the necessary drivers and programs. Before you uninstall or wipe the original hard drive, save a folder called "SwSetup" in the main C:\ directory. It will have important drivers and programs such as coolsense, as well as HP bloatware so watch out what you install. Obviously the HP website will have most of these drivers and programs, so you may find that route easier (make sure you have another computer with internet access), however, some have said the website does not have coolsense software yet (which is why the SwSettup folder is important).

Physical installation is easy, and instructions are in the manual (found of page one of this forum). Software installation will take time, but not much effort. By the way, only DV7s support 2 hard drives. If you have a DV6 or only want one hard drive internally, you can ignore the part about buying a hard drive caddy, just install the SSD in place of the old HDD.

By the way I got a Vertex 2, blazing fast on my old DV7 that i sent back, boot times (fully loaded windows, including BIOS loading time and finger print scan) took like 20 seconds. Programs opened nearly instantly, and my windows system rating base score was the GPU, at "only" 6.9. Defiantly recommend an SSD to everyone, but not HPs SSD because they are overpriced and not nearly as good as the alternatives.

I do have a dv6 on the way and would probably just removed my 750gb 5400rpm HDD that is coming shipped and replace with a good SDD, my only worry is if the SSD will be able to hold enough info.

Considering the need for a caddy, the pain of loading the software on it and formatting the original hard drive to use it as a secondary driveor , etc., the obvious route would be to buy it with the SSD if you plan to go that route. These days, the hardware is just too cheap to try to save $80 or $100 by committing a day's labor to a DIY SSD add-on, where there is some degree of likelihood it may take 3 times longer than expected. To spend a few bucks more and have it come pre-loaded is much nicer.
