It's an assumption, since we'd expect that all OEMs are selling B3 chipsets. You won't know until you get it and check.
-
I just talked to a HP rep and they "assure me" that they aren't using the old chipsets this time around.

Thank you for clearing my doubt, and is it possible to judge whether it has B3 or B2 chip by looking in computer management or some other place on windows 7? -
@amirtaraj: I am also from India, looking to buy this model. Do you have any idea of the prices here? -
The revision number shows up on device management.

I came across this earlier hope it helps.
Intel® Chipset Design Issue May Affect Certain HP Desktop and Notebook PCs HP Pavilion dv6t-6000 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)
I did talked with a HP rep yesterday via chat. After inquiring about which chipset was in my recently ordered dv7, I was told that the only way to know for sure was to have the serial # and ask again later as there was not one yet generated for my notebook. The rep then told me that I would not have access to the 'updated' serial # until after it was built. So it seems that we will all have to wait until owners recieve them. -
In the above posts you have the answers for the query.

Hi all! Just picked up one of the new ones for myself. Been waiting for a sub-$1k Sandy Bridge laptop (do lots of VM work) with a GPU that could still play most games. Only downer on this guy is the lack of a 2nd HD for the VMs; However, the USB 3 should let me run a speedy external drive. Ended up getting it for $987.

Only thing I'm questioning is not upgrading to the 2620QM, but couldn't justify it for the extra $150; For what I'm doing, the extra RAM was more important (and I heard the new config on these guys make swapping out RAM a bit tough, so didn't want the hassle).
Not getting shipped until around March 30th, thanks to all of you returns clogging up the line -

I've been operating under the assumption that's not the case for the Pavilions...though Dell used to always be easy too... -

I really like those DM1z things over Apple's Macbook Air...specs aren't TOO much better on the air (certainly not double the price better), and I wouldn't get an air because of the sealed hard drive (or...stick of flash...whatever). To me, the HP is both preferable...and oh yeah, half the price  -
Specs on dv7.

Oops. Here it is. Found this, hope it helps. Has Specs on dv7, including dissassembly instructions.

Hello,
Does HP have any documentation on the options listed in the BIOS/UEFI menu of the new spring DV6? or the winter DV6 for that matter?
thank you. -
-
Now I only hope we get the fixed chipset! -
Bad news: That vent under the left palm rest it still there, meaning that the left palmrest will still get hot. -

-2-year Extended Warranty
I'm pretty embarrassed with myself that I didn't remember the unmatched sticks would restrict the dual-channel ability. I found a good 4GB stick of DDR1333 Gskill on NewEgg for $40 which is pretty solid, but then I thought that upgrading ram myself might void my upgraded warranty. Does anyone know for sure if it does?
I also talked to a tech support rep about the Sandy B. processor issues. The feeling I got is that the current dv6/7t are being built with either the refurbished B2s or B3 so pretty much what everyone has been saying.
I did get the tech to say that even the dv6/7ts currently sold are also under the 4/30/2011 extended return deadline. Additionally, the tech said that the Spring update of the model is currently only going to add the backlight to the pad and keyboard as far as he knows. I am certainly going to take that with a grain of salt but it does kinda complete a picture for me.
It seems that the current dv6/7ts being sold are a rushed version of the spring update that was pushed out due to the Sandy Bridge issue. It just doesn't make sense for three versions of the same laptop to be floating around within 3-4months of manufacturing unless one of them is an interim model of sorts.
Overall, I'm pretty happy with the laptop I'll be getting; especially at the price. If I get a B2 and upgrading the ram voids the warranty I'll just wait until the 30th of April and exchange for whatever the best model out is then. -
I called up HP to see what's going on, and the rep said this is the final release with no future version with back lit keyboard. He also said that they stopped using the B2 since the recall and only started using the B3 since March 1st in the current model. This whole thing is just so ridiculous...
I already ordered my dv6, So I'll cross my fingers. 21 days is plenty of time to reconsider I suppose. And maybe something new will come along by April. -
In april they'll bump up to the Radeon 6850. Then in may the 6870, then the 6950 :-D
-
yes of course... funny thing is, the rep advised me to stick with the 2630qm so I did lol.. can't hurt when the salesman is trying to save you money.
-
wow this sucks...i could be wrong but i thought there was even a note from HP saying that we could return the defected SB's for a refund, or do an exchange...
i just got off the phone with a HP rep...she said "we have not gotten any words from intel yet about what to do with these defective SB MB's...you can go to intel's site and put up a complaint with them...you can ofcourse order a new laptop from us, but that'll be on your bill. we cannot guarantee that you'll be able to return your existing defective laptop for a full refund".
?!?!?! is going on here?
like i said, i could be wrong, but haven't some of you already ordered the new 6XXX QE's and returned your defective ones already?
sorry, i didn't read all the posts that has been posted so far...just some of them...thx -
Yes, some people of the Jan. release did return their defective ones for the new 6xxx models.
Their return date is before April 30?
------
Anyways,
Nice, Intel 6230 are supported...too bad you still get the 1000's. -

Heat Issue
Regarding heat, yesterday, i worked on my Envy 173d for about 5 hrs., by that time left side of laptop was pretty hot (i.e. left side of trackpad), Right side stays cool. The fan is at the top left corner (right at the base of screen), that section house the cpu, so understandably it is hot, but what exactly is at the left palm rest to make it so dang hot.
I have dv7t (that i have to return) with 2 HDD in it, and it did not get even fraction of that hot compare with envy (although fan in that one is pretty loud)
I have tried coolsense, putting first the middle option then the Coolest setting. It did help cooling it down with the trade of loud fan noise. At quietest mode it just too darn hot to work, unless you live up north and need a hand warmer.
Note: sorry put at the wrong forum, i realize after submitting. No option to delete -
No, it's handy info here I think since lots of people would be considering it too, plus you even mention the Pavilion! So sounds like you're picking the Envy over that? What CPU to you have in the Envy versus the Pavilion? Maybe the metal just makes it feel hotter?
-
Just looked through the dv7 service manual. Haven't seen anyone mention how much easier it is to access the hard drive, ram, and WLAN modules through the service cover in the new dv7. Instead of the screws on the bottom, you remove the battery to expose a latch to let you slide the cover off (page 40 of service manual). Sounds easy! Can't wait to throw in a vertex 3 ssd whenever they get released!

-
Really!! ... and here I thought the screw version was really easy. Guess real easy got easier

Well, its either this laptop or a SAGER NP5160.
Convince me why this one is better? I know the numbers, video card etc etc seem better. But the chip issue, and is HP's reliability improved? -
Okay, well I like Nvidia's drivers better, BUT on the higher end Sagers it turns out for some reason Sager's GTX 460 and 485 aren't supported, when other company's 460s are...and I need driver support.
Also that system has Optimus, which adds complexity to the video system, and hurts performance...of course it does work for reducing power, but for me making the whole system perform worse and possibly act flakier is a big turn off.
Soooo for those two reasons I'd personally feel safer with the HP right now I think.
Regarding a chip issue, do you mean Sandy Bridge's "southbridge" chip? If so, that was industry wide and not just HP (at least hopefully they're using the new revision....)
HP's been towards the back of the pack (though Consumer Reports has never had enough data on Sager to rate it one way or the other). But anyway, the past year or two HP's come up in reliability to basically bunched around the middle of the pack -
I bought a hard drive caddy (from newmodeus: 2nd HDD Caddy & Cable for HP dv7-4000, dv7-5000, dv7t SE,dv7qte [HP-dv7-4000] - $38.55 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks) the dv7qe from back in january. It seems the dv7-5000 and 6000 use different caddies (as per the part #'s and images in the respective service manuals). I just returned my old dv7 for the new one. Am i out of luck for the caddy? Will I need to get a new one or is there something I can do?
(The return policy with newmodeus is long expired)
Also anyone find a place that sells caddies for the new dv7s? HPs are waaaaay too expensive. -
question, how did you do your return? is HP waiting until they get your old one? or are they sending you a new one then you send your old one when you get the new one? -
Is there any view as to the quality of the screen on these? I didn't get the vibe that there's any intention to provide 1600x900 or higher, but seems a good value package if the screen is ok quality and not the typical 40-50% colour and ~150 contrast (compared to SRGB and 500 contrast)
-
Does anyone know if the bios on the dv6 supports the XMP profile in the bios? I wanted to maximize the i7 potential with some speedier memory. Also, I assume being a higher end laptop that the screen uses the wireless tech making it compatible with push to screen type receivers, does anyone know for sure if this is correct?

FYI people, there are new coupon codes out which may be a better deal than then previous ones ($325 off, etc). I was able to call in and get a credit on the difference the new code would have saved on the order that I've already placed. Check the codes out here: HP Coupons for HP Pavilion, Select Editions, TouchSmart tm2 Laptops & Desktops - LogicBUY
