    The 4GB of solid state memory on the Seagate Momentus XT hard drive is temporary flash storage. The hard drive uses algorithms to place data in and out of the flash storage and combine it with 32mb of hard drive cache. This combined with a 7200RPM hard drive makes this THE fastest hard drive for a laptop aside from SSD (solid state disk).

    Yeah, what Costal said. Also it's higher quality flash than what's on some SD card. And it does work-the drive's the fastest mechanical drive you can stick in a notebook. Quite impressive speed gains where it matters most, i.e. boot times and initial program loads.

    As for the OS not fitting on there, I'd assume all the relevant files would end up there, plus most/all relevant files from frequently used programs. Looking at stuff, Firefox only uses like 30ishMB, and I doubt half of it actually gets touched much. 4GB goes a long ways.

    Well at least now I know I'm not the only one with this insanely hot CPU... Has anyone considered modding their laptops yet? I'm considering it because the heat makes gaming almost unbearable, and I'm on the brink of returning it.

    could you clarify?

    does it get too hot for your palmrests or does it throttle? or are you just worried that it will die bcoz the CPU/GPU is hot?

    All of them except the throttling part, my paranoia could be caused by me previously owning a desktop that rarely goes over 65C...

    ahh.

    I'm currently using a XPS M1330...
    the GPU goes up to 102C when gaming before it throttles :p

    still works after 3 years!
    but the palmrest doesnt really get that hot in my case...

    is it really uncomfortable on ur left hand? thats going to affect my decision on whether to buy or not ....

    Well, I think of the left palm rest when gaming as a reusable heat pack. :p It's not hot, but it gets pretty warm after maybe 45 mins of gaming.

    thats alright...

    it's expected to get "warm", as long as it doesn't get to "uncomfortable", then it should be fine :p

    try a notebook cooler, the 6770M is a beast and probably generates alot of heat!

    Throttling -> when your GPU/CPU gets so hot that it automatically decreases performance in order to lower the temperature, so your components don't get damaged. it's a pain when it happens during a intense match of SC2 @@

    Wow, I have yet to notice that after a few days of gaming. Even with a very heavy (860/975) overclock my GPU is hitting 75 degrees max. I haven't checked to see what my CPU has been at.

    Hot air discharges well from the left-hand side and the heat on the palmrest/keyboard hasn't been uncomfortable, let alone concerning so far.

    Maybe it's a defect?

    Edit: I should clarify that the DV6t I'm using does sit on a cooling pad. Without it I've noticed about a 6-7 degree variation in temperature.

    Er, I'm talking about my CPU, not GPU. My GPU hit a max of 62C when gaming. The palm rest is warm, not THAT uncomfortable.

    Also, how did you get the keyboard to come out? I attempted it because I was curious how the cooling system works, and where I could put vents and what not.

    I'd give it a couple days and just keep refreshing this page:

    HP dv6 Coupon Code, dv6z dv6t Select, Quad Edition i5 i7 Laptop Deals

    I paid for 8GB and the free deal came along the next day. Via chat they said that they can't apply another coupon on an existing order. But they took care of it with a manual credit.

    Yeah, my bad, I have no numbers on my CPU =( Only my GPU from Afterburner. I'll take a look tonight.

    As far as getting the keyboard to come out, I have a Cobalt multi-bit screwdriver. There is a single screw that retains the keyboard. Once you take that out, you press into the hole with a VERY thin screwdriver blade to pop the keyboard loose.

    This surprised me as well. I tried using the bit that I was using to disassemble the machine and I thought I was going to break the keyboard. I switched to a much more narrow bit and it popped out with very little force. Lesson learned, and hopefully everyone else can learn from it too!

    Unlocking MSI Afterburner, care of overclock.net

    Overclock at your own risk! Start off slow and work your way up. I've managed to get 860MHz Core and 975MHz Memory stable so far. These are huge bumps over the stock settings and give about a 10-15% performance increase in my experience.

    If you have the latest version the old method for unlocking doesn't work. You'll want to follow the directions there.

    You can get the latest version here: MSI Afterburner 2.2.0 Beta 2 download from Guru3D.com

    Edit MSIAfterburner.cfg in your installation folder

    Replace:
    [ATIADLHAL]
    UnofficialOverclockingEULA =
    UnofficialOverclockingMode = 0
    AccessibilityCheckingPeriod = 0

    With:
    [ATIADLHAL]
    UnofficialOverclockingEULA = I confirm that I am aware of unofficial overclocking limitations and fully understand that MSI will not provide me any support on it
    UnofficialOverclockingMode = 1
    AccessibilityCheckingPeriod = 0

    Correct. When Federal Express started out as an overnight delivery service, all packages went to Memphis, were sorted at night, and then went to their destinations. If you overnighted a letter from San Francisco to San Diego, it went via Memphis. It was generally efficient though. A plane loaded with packages outbound from Detroit flew to Memphis in the evening, and then the same plane could fly back to Detroit in the morning with inbound packages on it.

    Hey all, just got my dv7tqe this after noon and am having a very noob problem. I'm coming from windows xp, so my familiarity with 7 is just from using friends/family's pcs. in addition all household pcs are xp. My biggest problem is getting the wireless connected. It goes in and out of connectivity. All other pcs are fine. I got it working somehow and when I rebooted it it lost connectivity. I'm thinking its probably due to the hp wireless assistant interfering - I hated that on my old laptop and got rid of it. The wireless router is compatable, I checked and all drivers for comp and modem/router are up to date.
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Laptops get hotter than desktops because the cooling isn't as good (not enough room for a large fan). Unless you opt for a much weaker laptop, you'll have a hard time finding temps lower than those. Those temps are actually very good compared to most and considering how thin the laptop is. Also consider the fact that the laptop has only one fan while your desktop has several.

    No. It proves to the rep who says "it is not possible" that it is, indeed, possible as it has happened before. It is all too easy for them to say, "No, it is impossible" and when you say that others have received the other compensation without any proof, all they need to say is "No, they didn't."

    If needed, the details will show the rep how the compensation was done so they can do it likewise.

    RE: 9 Cell - Fully Charged (first time)
    - very unscientific, but here goes:

    dv7t/i7-2720QM/8GB

    Performance Power scheme, w/ Intel Graphics
    (Screen Full Brightness)

    Initially reported +2 hrs remaining, but within the first ten minute, it reported 4:09 remaining.

    Played 1:30, (normal) DVD twice, Full Screen

    After 3hrs, reported 1:00 remaining
    Played YouTube Videos Full Screen (wireless Internet connect) for ~35mins

    Report Warning that 9% charge remained ~22 minutes
    plug in AC or hibernation was imminent.

    About 5 minutes later, machine went into hibernation without detail.

    Conclusions: ~3:30 or less, real world usage... for 9 cell

    The way it was done on my initial order was that I got kicked to 'customer service' (possibly resolutions department) by refusing to order unless I got the deal I wanted and asking for somebody who had authority to cut me a deal.

    The way it was done yesterday was that I asked to cancel so I could reorder one with free memory and that got me sent straight to resolutions (or you could just call 866-217-6017 and save some time).
    Front line resolutions reps can do some credits to your bill, supervisors can do more.

    If they suspect that we are colluding against them, they might find a way to get even with us (like actually canceling our orders when we call to 'cancel').

    close maybe... my fan and HD were on constantly and the Blu Disc drive ran a lot ... but NOT constantly (playing the regular DVD). BTW, the optical drive makes much more noise running than the fan in any case. I WAS using the Intel graphics, but otherwise I was purposely NOT trying to save any power.

    Hey, has everybody been doing clean installs of their dv7 or dv6's? Are there any benefits of doing a clean install? Is there a noticeable difference in performance quality? Also, is it hard to do? I don't want to do a clean install and then have problems with missing drivers, etc. that I can't get from the HP support site. Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks!

    Well, I just got "the" email. My original est. was 4/4... now they are saying 4/15 or no more than 10 days from original ship date.

    :( Man, I just want a new laptop... didn't know I was signing up for all this drama!!

    A clean install is ideal from a purely performance standpoint, however, if you want to get performance gains without the clean install then uninstall all of the bloat-ware HP put on your machine. You probably won't get all of it but every bit counts.

    mine is pushed back to 4/19 from 3/25 (3/25 ----> 4/5 ------> 4/19), placed order on 3/13.

    cancelled the order and placed a new one - turns out to be $25 more expensive (6770m upgrade price), but has 8gb ram instead of 6gb ram, so it's like paying $25 for a 4gb stick.

    new build date is 4/26, also getting "free" 2day shipping (cost me $5 lol, despite the refund, the $39 is still taxed...)

    guess i'll be squeezing some more juice out of this dv6-4000cto from jan...
