YouTube - How To Replace the Optical Drive (DVD) for an Hard Drive on a HP Pavilion dv6
-
Nice finds - Exactly what I was looking for.
-
Thanks for the vids! Repped +1. Perfect for when I get my laptop. Already downloaded them for later.
-
hey dv6/7 owners, what are the main differences between the 2 is it just size and also, hows the res on the dv6 is it that bad for size
-
Yea the USB 3 not being on the notebook didnt bother me that much since I dont use anything that uses it. I could though if they made it. Im using 2 USB to VGA adapters which are USB 2 but work great. I was shocked how well they worked. Made by Ultra. Im sure they will be making those for USB 3 also but have not seen any out yet.
-
Thanks for the headsup on that! I didnt know it was expiring tomorrow.
-
My touch pad light is not working. The on/off indicator light at the top of the touch pad works, but the white light outlining the pad is off.
Any ideas how to get it back? -
Open her up, check the connector port, and put it back together. If not, then i'd say you have a defective unit. Whether you want to send it back or not is up to you.
-
It was working when I first got it. It just quit working. Downloaded new synaptics drivers. Didn't fix the light, but gave me Scrybe. Maybe the MS update turned it off. Is the light controlled by HP software?
-
I doubt the problem is where hte ribbon cable plugs into the motherboard. It was discovered in the modding thread that the power to the light, and the trackpad data cable are on the same cable. So unless the trackpad is not working, I doubt it's the connector. Is the trackpad working? If so, my guess is a bad lighting control unit. Whether you think it's worth the wait to send it back is up to you.
-
Or you could try rolling the driver back to see if that is the cause. Did you update the synaptics driver from the HP site? If not, it may not be compatible with the functionality included with your build.
-
OK...Worlds fastest HP laptop now ready. Somebody name a test.. wanna see if it's worth it.. Windows Experience index 6.9, limited by graphics (any solid GPU overclock info would be appreciated) Taking questions.
-
If I wanted to buy a second charger for my dv6 somewhere other than directly from hp does anyone have a suggestion. A smaller one would be nice.
-
Actually I just updated the modding thread. There is a separate cable for the LED power; it's hidden under the touchpad. Link
But I doubt that the cable would accidentally come out. -
It's not like we're going to accidentally mod our units haha. This is great news!
-
THANKS for the info I havent ordered mine yet... basically only ONE? HDD chassis plus the two Cables?
-
Guys what do you think about this ssd for a boot drive? I know its not too fast but 69.99 for a 64gb ssd is not bad.
$45 off Kingston 64GB SSDNow V100 Series 2.5" 64GB Internal Solid State Drive - LogicBUY -
Spend the extra cash and get an Intel, Crucial C, or OCZ Vertex SSD.
-
I believe you can get the HP Slim Travel adapter from eBay or Amazon for a fairly low price. However your laptop won't work at full capacity if you use a smaller one.
-
I'm no expert here...Currently a good price, some of these models are poorly rated due to drive failures, mediocre performance for an SSD.
Reference:
PassMark Software - Hard Drive Benchmark Charts
Personally, If going SSD I would not go with anything slower than the Crucial C300
Newegg.com - Crucial RealSSD C300 CTFDDAC128MAG-1G1 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
Sequential Access - Read: up to 355MB/s
Sequential Access - Write: up to 140MB/s
If out of price range I would watch dealigg/logicbuy/etc until better price comes along on a Crucial C300, Vertex 2 or 3, or Intel 510. -
But the computer comes with two caddies, so you're buying the kit just to get the 2nd (long) cable, unless your second drive doesn't come with drive screws, then you're buying the kit for a cable and four screws.
-
NP here, as long as i get the 2nd long cable. Thats all i REALLY need. Thanks again for the info.

Actually on the US website the coupon still works. Not sure where you are, but I can still bring the price under $800 with the nb8095 coupon.
-
I am in the U.S. It says that is is expired or invalid
-
I can confirm that: NB8095 still seems to work.
-
That's interesting. I just checked after your last post and it still subtracts almost $400 in the cart. Are you starting from this address?
HP Pavilion dv6 and dv6t Quad Edition series | HP Official Store
However, it is supposed to expire today, so it won't last long. -
I called and figured it out. It was because i had a $70 student discount.
-
I got it all for $847 nice!
-
I guess with 2630qm, 8gb of ram, 6770m gpu and 9 cell battery ?
-
Hey guys thanks for all the ssd help.
So out of the vertex 3, c300, and m4 which would you say would be the best bang for the buck for the dv6t qe? -

I got the free 6 gig upgrade they didn't have the 8. And i got the upgraded six cell battery and the 5770 and 7200rpm drive . It was $844.42 after taxes. My build date is may 20th and i got just under $400 in discounts.

Rolling back the driver did not work. The light quit working after a MS update, but I also installed WinXDVD from the giveaway of the day website. I was going to use system restore, but I can't locate my restore points even though I set one before the install.
Is it possible that the DVD software turns off the light as a feature so you are not distracted while watching a movie? If I uninstall WinXDVD, I will lose my free registration -
Unless WINXDVD is starting on boot, I doubt it.
Does winxdvd start an invisible process when the system boots? If so, try ending the process and testing the trackpad light. -
Does the light turn on when booting? I mean, during POST and Windows loading stages? If not, I think that a cable became loosen...
-
That's why your coupon code's not working; it's no good on the employee pricing models.
All you need to do is SIGN OUT of the HP site, build the system without being logged in, THEN apply the coupon and sign in during checkout. (IIRC, when I signed in the site removed the coupon and I had to reenter it, but no big deal.)
EDIT: I see the original poster figured this out, but the info may be useful to someone else. -
In a way it's like saying 'don't trade that horse in on a Miata, wait until you can afford a Corvette'.
Myself, I'd stay away from a V100 in a laptop simply because it's one of the most power hungry SSDs on the market. Which is odd, considering that the V+100 is one of the most efficient ( and pretty decent on speed for the price). -

Hey guys I have an HD6770 on the way to test in my machine.
It comes with Hynix T2C ram (1200mhz) and I saw the tear down pictures, where the memory chip details ever taken? Would be interested to know if its the mem controller limiting the clocks to below 1000mhz.
Also it will be interesting to compare a 3ghz core 2 to your sandy bridge CPUs. -

Hey guys I was interested in getting this laptop as a gaming laptop. My budget is around $800 and with a coupon I could get it 33% off (making it around $780.) I couldn't find many reviews of this, so I want to know whether it's my best choice for the money. My second choice was a Dell XPS 15, but this seems a lot more power for not much more money.
So do you guys recommend this as the best choice for gaming at my budget? And can I use more than one coupon code on the HP store website? THANKS -
- Good choice, this laptop can run most mainstream high-end games.
- Many people are waiting for their machines right now, but there are some brief overviews of the dv6t on Youtube.
- Refer to this thread for gaming information: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-pavilion-notebooks/568150-gaming-dv6tqe-dv7tqe.html
- No you cannot apply more than one coupon at once, unless they are categorized to do so. -
the dv7t is missing the long sata cable & four screws to mount the harddrive to the bracket. (the bracket is already screwed in). Basically you need 8 screws per bracket (4 for bracket to computer and 4 for harddrive to bracket). Also the each set of 4 screws are different lengths. So make sure you use the right ones (I recall the shorter screws are for harddrive to bracket, but not positive)
-
Thanks and how is the screen on this thing? I hear a lot of people complainging about low resolution. Is it all right other than that or is it mediocre? (Like are there more issues besides resolution or is it fine besides that?) I can watch movies on my TV so this is only for gaming and web browsing and youtube videos.
BTW I'm talking about dv6t http://www.logicbuy.com/deals/coupon-hp-pavilion-dv6t-16-inch-quad-edition-laptop/15717.aspx -
The screen is absolutely fine for what you're looking for.
-
the light does not turn on during post. Neither does the fingerprint sensor light, but the fingerprint sensor still works just like the touch pad still works.
Laptop has just barely been moved. It's hard to see how the cable could come loose. Is there some way to turn off the touch pad light on purpose? Maybe I did that by mistake.
Thanks for all the suggestions. -
Actually the laptop has traveled from Shanghai, China to your home. It's moved quite alot. If your touchpad was off, there should be a dim red light at the top of the ring. If that's not even there, both the reader light and the touchpad light are not getting any power.
-
Everything worked when I got it. The white light around the touch pad was there.
They (the touch pad and fingerprint reader) are getting power. Both work. I can turn the touch pad off using double tap and the dim red light appears. I can turn the touch pad on using double tap and the dim red light goes off and the touch pad works. If I run my finger over the fingerprint reader, the orange light appears and the setup program opens.
The white light around the touch pad is gone. It won't come on. -
Defective ribbon cable? We can't really diagnose anything until that thing comes apart haha.
