I think someone said to turn off "Automatically select power saving GPU when on Battery" in the Catalyst Control Center - Configure Switchable Graphics (just right click on your desktop).

I ASSUME you tried to completely shutdown the computer and restart ... right? I lost audio one time ... but I don't remember the circumstances before or after... wasn't out for long.

Great. next time, when in doubt, panic and restart. And if there's one thing this forum has taught me, it would be to call HP and demand a discount for any inconveniences.

Here's an interesting thing I found. Wondering if anyone can help.

I can't find the "pause/break" key... I was trying to do the win key + pause/break to get the Windows Experience index, and wouldn't you know it, it's...not...there....

    Is there a hidden substitute?

I know another way to get to the Win Exp Index, but I'm still perplexed about this missing key. Any ideas?

The Pause key is located on the right Shift key. FN+win key+Shift will bring it up.

ATI drivers disappeared from my windows update.
Never got the chance to try them...
Is there any tool, like Mobility Modder.NET?

About the other 3 optional updates...
Should i install from windows update or it's better to go to hp site and download from there if available?

    Oddities I've found:
-mute on and Skype still rings
-fingerprint reader stops working all of a sudden, logoff doesn't help, reboot brings it back. Scenario was DV6 sleeps, wakes, login w/ fprint rdr, then stops working.

Is it possible for the moderators to start an FAQ/Fixes thread or sticky for the dv6tqe?

Rather than going through random posts in this owners thread, one sticky as a collection of all the helpful points might prove more useful.

I think it's on by default if you install windows onto an SSD. I forget how to check if AHCI is active while in windows, but you can google it. I put Win 7 on my ssd and did the check, and the result was that it was active.

It's not exactly what you're looking for, but I think it's just as effective:

Right click on the desktop, and look at the top items in the context menu:
    Intel = Configure Switchable Graphics
ATI = Catalyst Control Center (or something like that) is first, then Configure Switchable Graphics.

So for you guys who already have their laptop, have you really pushed it yet? Meaning have you ran multiple applications/programs? Any hiccups?

I still have a few weeks before I hit my original ship date so reading your guy's responses really builds the anticipation and makes me ready for mine!!

Could You tell me if you installed just Windows 7 on the SSD? And if so how many Gigs did it take? What type of SSD did you buy? Where did you get the longer cable for the second bay? Any issues to look out for when doing the clean install? A instruction how to for the SSD and clean installwould be helpful. I wouldnt ask for much, would I! lol

I finally got everything needed to do android development on it, and while my old asus v1s was perfectly adequite still, this thing really smokes. I'm running the emulator (had to fire it up outside of eclipse so I could override the frame size, as the default framesize is taller than the screen height), debugger, browser with lots-o-links, etc, and this thing for the most part is just loping along, usually with the fans off (exception is emulator startup). I tend to stick with the Intel graphics as I don't need the ATI for most of what I do.

    Pretty good machine.

I am located in India , hp dv6 quad edition which is in US is known as dv6 6017tx here in India i think.

2)Is the battery backup / life good.
3)Intel sandybridge chipsets had flaws,is it been rectified in this notebook.
4)Should I go for this or xps 15?
5)Is it rev. B2 which is with flawed chipset or its rev. B3?

    My usage -

Yes. I just installed Windows 7 on the SSD. I put the 640GB drive in the second bay. I have installed some other software on the SSD as well (PDF Reader, HP SimplePass). But most of it on the 640GB drive (Office, Call of Duty: World at War).

Currently I have 45GB free of the 74 GB SSD drive (installation of Windows took 29GB or 39% of the disk). This is a Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate edition. I tried to install all software that I didn't want on the SSD to the other drive. However, there is a good chance that I missed some of it. I moved the TEMP folder to the other drive as well.

I bought the kit from HP Parts Store (Part # 641306-001). It comes with two racks and both cables for $33.

This is an Intel 80GB G2 SSD. I pulled it from my dead Toshiba (though I bought it for $250 when it came out).

Clean install went easy. I have a licensed copy of Windows 7 64bit Ultimate and I installed the following from the SwSetup drivers folder in the following order.

    1. Chipset
    2. Video
    3. LAN
    4. Audio
    5. USB30HC
    6. BCBT7 = Bluetooth
    7. Fingerprint
    8. HPProtSHD (HP Driveguard)
    9. IMEI (Intel Management Engine)
    10. IRST (Intel Rapid Store Technology)
    11. Misc (Realtek SD reader)
    12. MyWLAN3
    13. TouchPad

I also installed the following from HP in the SwSetup root folder.
    1. CyberDVD (DVD Burning Software)
    2. CBDVD2D (Power DVD)
    3. HPOSD (HP On Screen Display)
    4. HPPM (HP Power Management)
    5. HPSPIP11 (HP SimplePass)
    6. HPSF (HP Support Assistant)
    7. YouCAM (Cam software)

I just pulled out the existing HD. It really is pretty self explanatory. unscrew it and put in the SSD. I left the existing drive as is in case I wanted to go back to it. After installing Windows on the SSD and finding that everything was cool, I put the 640GB drive in the second bay and wiped it.

It was a bit of a step down from a 15 1568x1024 screen, but I find it works well enough for what I do (mostly software development, and an occasional game).

    1) Under normal usage, the laptop does not generate any significant heat. While, heavy gaming, the CPU touches max 95C and the GPU max 85C that I have seen. The fans come to full blast in heavy gaming sessions dissipating out heat from internal components. The left palm rest and the surrounding areas near the left side vent becomes warm to touch but the right side remains totally cool.

    2) Yes, the battery backup is good. I have not tested the battery life. But you can check out the dv6tqe battery life thread to get some numbers. I guess, the 6 cell battery gives more than 3 hrs under normal usage.

    3) Ya, this laptop is having new chipsets. According to HP's website, if the 4th through 6th digit of the serial no. of the laptop is 108 or numerically higher, then it contains new chipset (not the flawed one). Although, the software tools like cpu-z, hwinfo, etc. report it as B2 revision. But, it will be sorted out with new BIOS update sooner.

    4) It's your choice which will you go for. But the XPS15's GPU is much inferior than that of dv6-6017tx.

    5) Somebody here opened up his laptop and confirmed it is B3.

How is the current dv7tqe screen, (1600x900), in comparison to a 1440x900 screen? How much better (if at all) would the screen seem?

My old (and dead) Toshiba P100 had a 1440x900 screen and I would say that this one and that one are comparable. At full brightness I think it works for me just fine. I did prefer the matte finish on the Toshiba better because of glare issues, but I have not run into this being a problem on the HP.

Good to hear. My HP Pav dv9700z had a 1440x900, I figured this wouldnt seem like a downgrade but I just didn't want to be disappointed at the difference when I finally receive my laptop (I'm speculating my April 4th order wont get to me until probably October :p).

In terms of recommending how to best use the laptop and optimize battery life, would it be recommended to leave it unplugged (running on only battery power) until the battery's almost fully drained then plugging it in to recharge, then rinse and repeat? Or is it ok to leave it plugged in all the time? (Sorry if these are dumb questions. I'd rather ask them and know than do the wrong thing.)

Yes, good cooling pads can reduce the temp by about 5-10C. You can get cooling pads from cooler master with adjustable fans.

Sound quality from speakers as well as headphones is very good with Beats Audio turned on. I posted about the sound quality a few posts back. You should check few previous pages of this thread.
