Why are you returning it? Anything you don't like that we might be interested in?

I also see you bought the Dell XPS... that was one of my other choices but seemed a bit expensive.

Now that you have BOTH in front of you... what are your thoughts when you compare the two?

No, you will have to install quite a few drivers to get everything working. See my earlier post on the drivers you will need to install. All the drivers are in the SWSETUP folder on the original OS drive.

    Cool! Rep +1.

Okay, so on that list you previously made, how do you know which is which? You referred to the items by name, and I assume the name as shown on the disc can be quite different.

Also, where is the SWSetup folder? Off the root?

Finally, supposing a just copy these to an identical folder in the same location (but on the SSD), how do you activate them? Does each have a setup utility, or what?

    Thanks.

You can return it within 21 days for free. They even cover the return shipping.

Hi all. I've had my dv7 for a few days now and have a question about using an external monitor.

I've got an old Dell 2001FP monitor hooked up as the primary monitor. Everything works as it should, except that I can't rotate the screen into portrait mode. I don't see the "Orientation" dropdown menu on the "Screen Resolution" page. I've tried both the Radeon and the Intel GPUs, but I have no software option to rotate the screen.

I'm using a DVI-HDMI dongle to connect the 2001FP to my dv7, so I don't know if that is having any effect.

Has anyone else been able to use an external monitor with their dv7 (or dv6) and rotate it to portrait mode? Thanks in advance.

The names are as they are in the SWSETUP folder on the disc. I tried to clarify in parens what they actually were for. The SWSetup folder is indeed off the root.

Each has a setup type exe file in the folder of the driver. Just find it for each one and run it.

I spent a few minutes and I cannot find the rotate ability either. It is disabled on the ATI control panel in the system tray.

On my dv7, I moved the HDD to the secondary, and then I installed everything in the D:\swsetup\drivers folder. The rest of the stuff I'll decide what to install later, but I figured I wanted drivers for everything, including Intel Rapid Storage Technology.

On a dv6, I'd just copy the swsetup folder and all subfolders to a memory stick or DVD.

BTW, I moved the extra hard drive partitions (SYSTEM, HP TOOLS, RECOVERY) to drive letters X, Y, and Z, and assigned D: to the main partition of the HDD.
Is there a way in Win7 to reassign the DVD drive from H: to E:?

Yes. Assuming the E: drive is available. Do the following:

Click Start-->Right Click Computer-->Manage-->Storage-->Disk Management-->Right Click CD-ROM 0-->Change Drive Letter and Path-->Click Change Button-->Assign the following Drive Letter

I remember seeing a post regarding the AMD Catalyst Control panel and the limited options. Did we ever see a resolution as to why this is?

Somewhat off-topic, but really on-topic. Any reason the in thread search doesn't work at all? I sent a message to the admins. Hopefully they can get that fixed, so I wouldn't have to ask a question that may already have been answered.

It doesn't make much sense why the search function is so pathetic. Google search of this site works fairly well. Just append: site:forum.notebookreview.com to your Google search.

Okay, my new machine is now in front of me. The OS is on C (bummer).

So, can this re-install be done by simply saving the SWSetup folder to my thumb drive and then, moving the SSD to slot 0, and then, installing Windows from DVD I have, and then, go into flash drive and copy SWSetup to SSD, and then, installing each driver you listed? (whew!).

    Yep!

The battery release switch goes the other direction which allows you to start popping out the bottom. Just be careful. It feels like you could break the plastic.

    DV7?
    Short answer: Very carefully.
    Long answer:
    1. Put computer upside down with battery facing you. Remove battery.
    2. Shove battery latch in the opposite direction from unlatching the battery. Notice how the drive cover bulges up by the battery compartment? Carefully lift there.
    3. Almost all of the hooks in the cover release by moving the cover towards you.
On the right, where it gets wide over the drives themselves (the memory is under the narrow part by the battery) there are a couple of tabs that release by pushing the cover away from you. Start by the battery cover and work your way around to the right, slowly lifting the cover. Once you get those two tabs on the right released, gently move the whole cover towards the battery compartment as you tilt it up. The whole row of tabs on the side farthest from the battery do not unclip, you pivot the whole cover around them like a hinge as you lift the other side.

I've had the SSD machine open 5-6 times now, and haven't broken one tab yet.
I leave the cover off while I'm working on it, then if I need to disable a drive, or even switch the drives around, I can do it with the cables in a few seconds without messing with the cover.

Got it. Okay, it turns out that the Win 7 DVD I have is Win 7 Pro. Because this will be Pro (and not Home), will this make a difference in my ability to install properly as outlined above?

No, it shouldn't. I believe Pro is the same as Home, but you have some added networking capabilities (e.g. allowing remote desktop hosting).

See this link for the differences between the Win7 versions.

Do you have a license for Pro?
If you were planning on using the license that came with the dv7 and you didn't buy Pro with it, you'll probably have to re-record the DVD with the ei.cfg file removed and then select Home Premium when installing.

I have a license for the pro.

I switched cables, and on boot, it says No Bootable device. I thought the Win DVD would take care of it for me, but it does not. I am stuck at No Bootable device. What next?

I recieved my notebook this morning and it looks very nice. I see none of the gaps that people have reported at all. Everything related to that is perfect. I did however have the "s" key on the keyboard poped up on the left side of the key. I pressed the left side of it down firmly and it looks ok but still raised up somewhat on that side. Wonder if that is going to be a problem going forward?

You have to format your SSD as a bootable drive(MBR) so you can access for a fresh install.

Alright, I am almost ready to buy this. Do you all recomend this as the best laptop at this price point? Are there ay other competitors that might be better? I have also been looking at the asus n53sv, and g53sw. Both of these would be more expensive at the moment (due to coupons), but would they be worth it? I don't game hardly at all, but I would like a powerfull GPU so handle multiple displays while transcoding video. I am also considering a Dell XPS 15. The display on this is much better, I hear, but the graphics card is worse. Can anyone comment on the performance of the 525m?

Edit: I am talking about the dv6tqe, by the way. I like the dual drives in the g53sw.

Take a look at this thread. The Disk Management service lets you right click on a disk and format/partition the disk. You will have to delete each volume on the disk and then format/partition it.

OK. I'm there. Drive D has partitions D, E, F and G. They are System, OS, Recovery and HP_Tools.

Should I just get rid of all these? If so, do I clear each one by choosing "Delete Volume?"

    Thanks.

What would I want to save from them? HP_Tools might have something, but I don't know what it would be?

The recovery ought to be useless.

Can you think of anything I'd want to save?

Also, how do I set the system to use the D drive for temporary files?

And, do I need to set up a new recovery partition (or just leave the one that is there alone)?

    Thanks.

I wiped all of them. Since you were able to create a working copy of the OS and have the SWSETUP files you should be all good. I assume you did make the recovery DVDs? Even if you didn't just make sure you have a copy of the SWSETUP files in two places in case you ever need to reinstall everything again. I think there are a couple of things in that folder that you cannot download from HP, so the SWSETUP folder is all you have.

You do not need the recovery partition. I created two volumes on my D: drive. One of 400GB for programs and data and another of 250GB for backup. I then used Windows Backup to take a System Image only of the OS on the 250GB partition. Don't know if I would ever use it (since I could always reinstall like I did originally) but it doesn't hurt.

As for moving your temp files over just do the following:

On the D drive, create a folder called TEMP. It should have the path D:\TEMP

Then go to Control Panel --> Systems and Security --> System --> Advanced System Settings --> Advanced Tab --> Environment Variables Button

Edit the values for TMP and TEMP so that the path is D:\TEMP for both.

I deleted D, E and F. When deleting G, it warns me that the HP_Tools is currently in use and asks me if I want to continue. It says that proceeding might cause unexpected problems with the application that is using it. I really don't know what that might be. I checked to see what is on the drive, and it shows Bios, BiosUpdate and SystemDiags folders. What do you think? Leave this one alone?

If the connecter fits, you might be alight if you monitor things. I am not sure of the real power requirements, but they usually assume the worst conditions ... recharging while running all out. You will know if you have a problem is the adapter starts getting unusually hot. The adapter WILL try to accommodate what is ask of it. The worst case is adapter melt down. If you don't mind monitoring the temperature, I doubt if you run into any problems ... If you mindlessly run willy nilly... you get what you deserve

For this particular unit I don't think there is any significant difference. I would suggest noobs just uninstall obvious bloatage like Blio, Bing bar etc.

I did a clean install on an SSD and had some random(rare) freezing issues. It was a Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 install. I'm 99.99% sure it's not an SSD issue because I'm using it in another system with no problems.

I went back to the original hard drive with factory install and everything has been fine. Laptop will run Prime95, Linpack etc with no problems. Funny thing is, Windows Update won't offer Service Pack 1 even after all other updates have been installed. Has anyone with a factory image been offered SP1?

By the way, to get Internet TV & Netflix in Windows Media Center I had to run a Command Prompt(as Administrator) and this command...

    net localgroup administrators NetworkService /ADD

How's that for a rambling, odds and ends first post?

In Control Panel->Mouse Click the Device Settings tab with the Synaptics icon on it.

    Click the Settings... button.

Select Scrolling and click the "Gears icon" next to it.

Enable Horizontal/Vertical scrolling. Try the ChiralScrolling too, as mentioned before, it's cool

Another cool feature that I haven't seen anyone mention(maybe missed) is under the Pointing item, it's called EdgeMotion. Ever try to drag a file to a folder and run out of real estate on the track pad? This option keeps the cursor moving when you get to the edge. Nice!

You can uninstall bloatware, but I'd like the registry cleaned out too, what are the best tools for that?

Thanks @DeusExMachina for the confirmation. I've never seen it take this long to be offered. Several reboots and it still thinks everything is up to date without SP1.

In no particular order, Registry Mechanic, CCleaner, Glary Utilities. CCleaner is probably the most used though personally I'm not a big fan of automatic registry cleaners.

How can you tell which GPU is currently enabled?

Edit: I recently updated my graphics card using device manager and my wifi/bios using hp support assistant.

Since then I've been plagued by random d/cs and my fan has been running constantly. Are the new drivers faulty? Did the new GPU driver disable gpu switching?
