So I just got my dv7 yesterday after the second delay. Everything seems fine, and in general I am satisfied with the laptop, but there are a couple issues:

1)During updates, or even when the computer has been sitting idle for a while (I am guessing when it tries to conserve power - the screen becomes all noisy and netted and wavy...as if something is wrong with the graphics card? Tried turning off switchable graphics...we'll see if that helps.

2)A couple times, the computer has just restarted on me out of the blue...Like I would be browsing My Computer or something and all of a sudden bam...

    Anyone had these issues?

I can confirm that BIOS F.07 on DV6TQE with an i7-2630QM has the ability to toggle VT-x.

Mine shipped with version F.07 installed -- recv'd approx. 1 week ago.

    Wireless N Issues

I had wireless issues with my dv6tqe out of the box. The first symptom was manifested itself like so:

During large file transfers across the network (we're talking 2GB file, 5-6MBps throughput) the laptop would lose it's connection to the internet. The file transfer would hum along just fine, but the thing couldnt get out to the internet at all! Once the file transfer completed or was cancelled, internet connectivity resumed

I actually resolved this by updating my router (D-Link DIR-655 rev A.) firmware to the newest version. It was 1.21NA, now it's 1.35NA.

The second problem, after updating the firmware on the router, manifested itself like this:

When the wlan connection speed/signal changes (i,e, you go from 130Mbps to 76Mbps or 52Mbps) there is a several second pause in network activity. When running a speedtest and walking around the house with the laptop I would watch the speed test stutter every time the signal strength changed. In day to day use, this appeared like a slow loading web page

I solved this second problem by going to intel's website and downloading the latest wireless drivers. I noticed that when the HP support tools ran, they detected an even newer version of this driver (14.X) and installed it. Ever since the first driver update, wireless has functioned flawlessly.

Anyway, thought this might help someone out if they're experiencing the same issues,

Can I just create an image of the laptop(ghost or acronis) and restore it on my SSD or do I need to do a clean install??

I really wouldn't be able to tell, where you using Intel graphics or AMD's? Just try uninstalling-reinstalling them all, guess it wouldn't hurt. Although if the problem continues you would rather ask someone else.
    Hope it helps.

I had trouble imaging a 580GB partition and restoring it to a 60GB partition, even though only 30GB were used.

Eventually did it with Easeus Partition Manager, but then I had to boot off a system repair disk to make it work.
All because the Win 7 install disk files I downloaded were corrupt and I couldn't make a clean install DVD.

Standard C drive is 37GB, C drive after a minimized HP Recovery is 30GB.

I restored the minimized image from the recovery partition, then used EPM to copy it to the SSD, then used a system repair disk (made from Windows Backup and Restore) to make the SSD properly bootable.

It looks like using EPM to install windows on the SSD prevented Win7 from getting a lot of settings right for SSD use, so fixing all of that is my first task for tomorrow.

Booting takes 25 seconds from power button push to the wait circle disappering from the mouse pointer, and I'm getting a WEI disk score of 7.3 from my cheap Nova 64 SSD.

    1. If bluetooth isn't working after a clean install you must use HP Wireless assistant to enable it prior to installing the B/T drivers. Then install BCBT7.

    2. Day 6 of owning the laptop my DVD-R stopped reading discs. After a long drawn out phone call with HP they will ship me a new DVD-R drive, however, during this phone call my BIOS was rolled back to F.06.
After two hours of use there is no longer any "freezing" I believe this was caused by F.07! Which I can confirm does have VT support option in BIOS for DV6T.

    3. Still don't know a good one. Any ideas?

***UPDATE*** I have been using my laptop now for over 5 hours with no "freezing". I am about 90% certain the cause was the F.07 BIOS. Unfortunately you can't go from F.07 to F.06 as per this threads previous posts. (It must be done by HP Tech Rep).

    Just got this thing yesterday...
Machine shuts off randomly (not shutdown, just restarts from scratch).

Thought it might have been the battery, but it does it with either battery. Anyone had this? I know it can be caused by overheating...but I doubt that's the issue...new laptop...feels warm but not anything extra-ordinary.

If this is a hardware issue I'd be pissed beyond belief...this is my 4th dv7 in the past 6 months.

number one issue is your windows settings will be for a HDD and not a SSD. Trim, Defrag, Prefetch / Superfetch, etc won't be set right. Granted you could probably easily adjust those yourself afterwards.

Is this probably the reason most people have not got the F.07 BIOS update via HP updates? They probably must be in the process of getting a new BIOS update out which gets us virtualization support as well as fixes those freezing issues.

Thanks for the reply and clarifying that the drive was in bay zero. I would have thought that would have worked. The other option would be to hit the thread that talks about downloading a legal copy of windows and using your existing activation code. I didn't have the problem with the restore because I have another copy of Windows 7 that I bought for my dead toshiba. It is good to know that the recovery disk may now not work for me though.

Plan A was using the Recovery disks to restore minimized windows to the SSD. Apparently there wasn't a large enough drive present for Recovery to think it was the boot drive. Either that, or 60GB just isn't big enough to unpack everything.

Plan B was a clean install. First thing I did was make the Recovery disks. Second thing was backing up the windows activation. I'd already downloaded the three files to make the Windows install DVD with. When I tried to unpack them, it just wouldn't run. I suspect BOX1 is fatally flawed. I downloaded 2.0GB in Firefox, then installed a download manager and tricked it into finishing the download (it didn't want to resume using the file Firefox downloaded).

Now I'm downloading the one file Windows .iso. Started six hours ago and I'm 1/3 done. A 3GB download is an all day project for my EVDO modem, not to mention I'm hogging the tower on a weekend and slowing everybody else's internet service. Is it feasible to download 3GB at Burger King?

The disks work just like the recovery partition. You can do a 37GB windows install with bloatware (duplicating the factory C: image) or a 30GB slimmed down install.

I always had luck with EASEUS TODO BACKUP. It works with all kinds of drives, whether different size, brands or different partitions. I never tried it with an SSD. But I'm sure it will still work. It's quick and easy. It's really good for the ones who don't have the time to do a fresh install. The bad thing about it, both drives have to be in at the same time using your sata ports. Once it's complete, swap drives and you are done. You can keep the other as a backup or format it and use it as a storage drive.

I should receive my dv7t tomorrow!!

I was planning on a clean install BUT...after reading about all the problems encountered AFTER clean install I am rethinking my plans.

Why fix it if it aint broke??

Guess I will wait to encounter problems before I create more/new ones!

Any recommended changes that do NOT create issues??

What kind of sleeve do you guys recommend for the dv7? I'm trying to decide between these two cases (links below), but both reviews are equally positive.

Amazon.com: 17" Widescreen Laptop Notebook Sleeve Carrying Flip Case Bag for Fujitsu, Samsung, Dell, Acer, ASUS Eee PC, Gateway, HP, Sony, Compaq, IBM, Mac, Sharp, Toshiba models: Everything Else

Amazon.com: 17" Widescreen Laptop Notebook Sleeve Soft Case for Fujitsu, Samsung, Dell, Acer, ASUS Eee PC, Gateway, HP, Sony, Compaq, IBM, Mac, Sharp, Toshiba models: Office Products

I'm leaning towards the first one based on styles, though, I will have to wash the rubber smell out before using it.

Usually people post problems here, but those with success rarely report back.

The people who have problems tried to rush and take shortcuts instead of spending time in research, compare and create a good plan with backups

If you think it will get scratched by anything in your bag, then yes. I am considering it because I'm concerned that it will get scraped or dented if I leave it on a table in my house with some careless people. :( I want to get this laptop backpack Amazon.com: Swiss Gear Ibex 17-Inch Notebook Backpack: Electronics because it's high-quality, though, the price is a turnoff. I want to protect my investment, but I don't to pay for something that costs 3X what a standard (non-laptop) backpacks costs. I'll probably wait for a good code/coupon before buying this backpack.

What BIOS revision does everyone have?

I am finding that BIOS F.6 works fine, however when I use F10 to try to get into BIOS, I get some junk instead (something about selecting Windows Boot Path).

Bios F.7 works, but my computer suddenly shuts off...without any reason and without any errors in my logs. But then I can access BIOS with F10.

Also, though my dv7 CAME with F.7, the HP site only offers F.6

The HD cam is just marketing. You can't have good lighting and quality with a lens that size. Just simple rules of optics. So no matter how many pixels there are, if you don't have a bigger lense, you don't get better quality.

For everyone thinking about doing a clean install, I went in to the Microsoft Store today in San Diego, and one of the guys explained a program to me called Microsoft Signature. If you buy your PC there, they install a custom build of Windows that is made for that particular PC. If you didn't buy your PC there, you can still have them perform the upgrade. Basically, it consists of a clean install and removal of bloatware. And for a $150 you can get this done and you get Windows support from by phone.

So, a clean install does make it faster. Warning, Micro$oft's own website won't play videos on IE, ironic isn't it? You have to have Silverlight installed.

    Microsoft Signature

I had this problem yesterday (when playing around with the settings... )
Click on "enhance the current video image" on the right hand side,
    Click advanced
    Camera control tab
Make sure there is a tick in the auto box for exposure.
this got it back to a suitable level for me, hope this helps.

Only got my laptop on friday, only just reached retailers in New Zealand, unfortunatly we done have access to CTO or crazy discounts. but im happy :)

cant wait to put in a Momentus XT thou,
any one done an upgrade to this HDD? noticable performance increase?

Strange effect when ripping DVDs vs Blu Rays using DVDFab 8 (i think the program is free for 30 days).

(ATI is enabled in both cases):
When ripping Blu Rays, it'll use my GPU (resource monitor shows a very low load on my cpu).

When ripping DVDs, it'll use my CPU (resource monitor shows my CPU maxed out around 99%).

Not complaining though, the program is solid. Either way it takes about 30 minutes (for a .mkv rip). But wow, a Blu Ray rip takes up 25gb (haven't tried to compress it or anything with Handbrake yet) while a DVD rip takes up only about a gb.

This backpack goes on sale for $33.99 / free shipping at 3PM Pacific Time today. (6PM Eastern).

    Amazon reviews.

Doesn't seem like a bad deal, but my $24.99 Swiss Gear Mythos messenger bag was a much better deal. Sorry I didn't think to post that one here when it was on sale.

I will be getting my delivery any time; it is on the truck.

I want to install the OS on my SSD. I have Windows 7 on a disc. If I install the SSD in the primary slot and install Windows from the dvd, will it automatically install all the needed hardware drivers (fingerprint reader, track pad driver, etc.)?

I am wondering how to do this right the first time, so that I don't waste hours trying to fix a bad install.

    Thanks.
