I talked to a guy at intel and he said it works. HP has to enable it and add the software for it. Look at the system tray and see if you have the widi(mifi?) app running, if you do then you are good to go.

    This ^.

    What those tests mean:

    1. If your serial number is pre recall, go to 2.
If your serial number is post recall, stop. You do not have the defect.

    2. If your chipset is Sandy Bridge you have the Sandy Bridge defect. If you have the old architecture, you don't.

What too many people are doing is bypassing step 1 and jumping to step 2. "Oh, no! I have the chipset for Sandy Bridge in my Sandy Bridge notebook! HP tried to cheat me!"

using this laptop for 2 weeks now im dangerously close to returning it. The screen quality really is that bad. The contrast on this has to be the worst I have ever seen on a notebook PC. Its incredibly disappointing to know the cheapest component in a notebook is the one you actually look at when the laptop is in use.

Im also still having Linux driver problems. I cannot for the life of me get ubuntu 11.04 to run with hardware acceleration turned on, and yes I have updated drivers directly from the mesa git hub.

Have you tried using the Windows 7 display calibration utility yet? I agree that the the display is poor but have not had the time (yet) to see if the calibration helps.

For me, I'm on a Thinkpad T500 (3 yrs old) at 1280 x 800 at work all day and its much more vibrant then the dv7t (which I got for personal use). My daughter's Lenovo G560 (1366x768) looks better as well.

Even my old T42 looks better.

three year screens are probably flouresent (backlit)... new screens are LED. The screen on MY dv7t-6000 is every bit as good as the one on my Dell Studio 17 ... and much cleaner than the 1280x800 flouresent on my dv6426us. It does have somewhat limited angle viewing ... which doesn't really bother me... keeps prying eyes away. I am interested in EXACTLY what screens people think are so great... because there ARE some ... just none in any "I" have ever seen in < $2000 machines.

I have the 2630 and Start->Programs->Intel Wireless Display

I highly doubt they would enable for something as low as an i3 and not an i7. BTW, MiFi is different from WiDi. The comparo tool on Intel's site has all kinds of wrong info. The 2630 has both WiDi and MiFi.

    NOTHING is Wrong with it!

I prefer my hp dv6 1353nr.....15 inch with Backlit KB.

I did not notice any difference in performance between the two to justify the extra cost and weight!

In my opinion, I feel that the screen on the 15 inch MacBook Pro (Feb 2011 refresh) is AMAZING. Crystal clear fonts, brightness is super bright and adjustable to an incredibly low setting if desired, and the viewing angles, well they pretty much don't exist. You can see the WHOLE image on the screen from any angle regardless of the angle the lid sits at.

I think it's an IPS panel, not a (cheap) standard TN one. TN LCD fades color (and for some angles there's a complete inversion of them) in relation with the looking angle from the perpendicular axis, while IPS does not suffer this defect. ;)
The only non-Apple laptop that uses IPS screens are the business series, AFIK.

Tell me about it. The screen on that thing is drawing me closer and closer to it. I've been to my local Apple store more than a few times in the last few weeks, just admiring that screen.

If the Envy 17 (on its way as we speak) doesn't work out for me, I will have to go the MBP route.

mbp does not use IPS display, it's just a very good quality TN screen.

the new sony F series uses IPS screen with anti-reflective coating (glossy but without glare).

Ok i have had my dv7t for about 2 weeks here are my thoughts:
    + Performance
    + Battery Life
    + Keyboard
    + Features
    - Cosmetic Problems -(small gaps and one of my keys came with a scratch!)
    - Build Quality seems cheap
    - No back lit Keyboard
    - Fingerprint magnet

I know that alot of people are complaining about the screen but mine is beautiful.... Makes me want to keep it and just live with the minor cosmetic problems. I also have no dead pixels :) Knowing Hp if i get it replaced it will have even bigger issues lol

I second this. I'm sure some of us newbies could even contribute a couple of bucks each to someones Paypal account if they took the time to do a detailed Video of a Clean Install, including dealing with the drivers and other required software. This would be VERY much appreciated ! Thanks in advance.

This post makes me thinking about...
Apparently, they used IPS panel some years ago, and I'm not updated... Strange... in every case, it's incontestable that Apple MacBook Pro adopt a better quality display ;) I don't know much about the Sony F series...

I just got my DV6t select edition (dual core).

    First impressions:

I love it. After calibrating the screen with Windows ClearType and lowering the blueness of the screen by decreasing the blue hue value, I think it is pretty decent. I ordered a 15.6" matte View Guard for it to eliminate the glare, which should enhance the viewing further. Maybe I'll post some pictures after the install.

All in all, I love this laptop and glad that I made the purchase. Battery life (which is priority #1 for me) is fantastic. With light internet use, it should last close to 5.5 hours with screen set to 40%. Will be installing an Intel SSD soon, which hopefully boosts the battery life further.

I've been spending a lot of time in the Envy thread...and I posted this in the modding thread earlier today.

    MyFishWagon has already ordered one...

But for those who are looking for a back-lit keyboard and a better screen...take a hard look at the QUICK SHIP Envy 17 (Non-3D).
The body and mouse pad are basically the last gen DV7....and it only has 1 USB 3.0 port and a 1 year warrenty....
    BUT...
It has a couple of items that the DV6/7 really, really, really needs.
    #1 - Backlit keyboard
    #2 - 1920 x 1080 screen.
Plus it comes with a blu-ray player, dual 500GB 7200 RPM HDD's and both a 6 cell and 9 cell battery...along with a better GPU and dual band Wi-Fi card.

The regular price is $1499.99 plus tax. The EPP price is $1349.99 plus tax. If you do everthing correctly, you can add the full 3 year care pack with House Calls and Accidental Protection for another $153.00. (EPP plud Dealigg30 coupon).

I know it is more than the DV6/7....but for those who are really bummed about the lack of a back-lit keyboard and poor screen....that may be an option.

Could you tell me what panel/screen came with yours? Go to Device Manager->Monitor->Details tab->Scroll to Hardware ID. I'd really appreciate it and I'm sure others who got the same crappy auo139e screen would too.

I used the Intel HD Graphics console (you can find it in the system tray, on the right of the task bar) to adjust the blueness. The ClearType is just for calibrating the text.

    That wasn't too hard.

    1. Make system recovery DVDs with HP Recovery Console. I believe you can get there with F11 at startup, but I got there by searching for Recovery from Windows.

    2. Buy or make a Windows Install disk.

    3. If you want to keep your Windows Home Premium license on the computer, download ABR beta and back up the Windows activation to removable media.
ABR (Activation Backup and Restore) | directedge.us

    4. Copy the Swsetup directory to a DVD or memory stick.

    5. Delete the partitions you don't want (Boot from Install disk, get to the repair menu, open a command prompt, run DISKPART) and install Windows.

    6. Use your ABR media to restore your Windows activation.

    7. Every folder in the Swsetup\Drivers directory contains a setup application for a device driver. Run them all.

    8. Every folder in Swsetup except \Drivers contains the setup application for a piece of software or bloatware. For the most part, this is what we did the clean install to get rid of, but some of it, like Adobe Acrobat Reader, is really useful, and some of it, like Norton Internet Security (folder named InetSec or similar) might be something you'd want.

Or, if the above seems like a pain in the rear and you're using the original or similarly large hard drive (this won't work with a 64GB SSD), you can run HP Recovery and do a minimum install. Most of the above will happen automatically. You still get the horrifyingly ugly desktop background image that HP put on the system, but it's easily changed.

the XPS has a way better display (especially if ur doing photoshop - it has better contrast and color accuracy) + a subwoofer
so for items 1,2, and 3, it would seem to fit ur needs better.

    #4 - depends on u

    #5 - well...... lol

like i said, theres no reason to get a dv6tqe if ur not gaming lol (but where i live, the XPS and dv6 cost the same price - maybe thats why)

Hey guys, I've read the first 100 pages then gave up trying to read all of it. I tried using the search function but it appears to not work.

Anyway, my question is how loud is the fan noise? I was about to clamp down on a dell xps 17 but read the review from notebookcheck, it turns it has horrible fan noise. My current laptop, a 4.5 year old HP DV5000 gets terribly loud sometimes. I'm so tired of it. So if anyone can elaborate on the noise that would be great?

Also, do you guys think the the upgrade to the 2720qm would be worth it. I'm just concerned that the base clock speed is so low. I won't need to much power, just enough to do batch RAW file processing, but it seems that the 2630QM could handle all of that.

A lot of people are complaining about the screen. I'm coming from a 5 year old HP DV5000 with a 1280x800 and it seems to me that this screen will blow my mind, not because of the resolution but the brightness.

I got the auo139e, the color is ok, a little blue. I also get the screen door effect (space between pixels). It does have really crappy blacks... It's good enough for me, I got the color looking decent and my eyes aren't so great anyway, that I hardly notice.

I'm still very happy with the unit as a whole, though I"m looking to upgrade the screen sometime in the next year to a 1080p with good viewing angle as soon as someone identifies a good model that fits this laptop. I don't know much about replacing screens in laptops... :p

The great thing I've found with the switchable graphics is the low power consumption on the battery. The fans are pretty loud when the 6770 is being used, but with the IGPU 3000, pretty quiet.

Now for the processor, I think that you have to worry about your software being multi core and multi-threaded more than you do about the base freq. The cache is the same between the 2630 and 2720. After running several programs and getting the same processing times for rendering video, I'm coming to the conclusion that my bottlenecks are starting to become the hard drive, I'm on the 1 TB 5400 RPM drive still, so I'll have to test when the newer drive is used to see if that's any faster.

If u wanna see how garbage SEC4251 is,

    **Noob question alert**

How do I access HP Coolsense? I tried to open HP Coolsense yesterday, but it said something like 'attempt failed'. Now I can't even find it. Your help is appreciated.
