Laptop is being weird with the sound. Sometimes, the headphone port will suddenly stop working (no errors in Device Manager) and sound will instead play over the speaker. This happens with both headphone ports, and only a restart fixes it. Ideas?

It is absuurd that the search functon of the forum does not work! There have been many referrences too it in just this thead. Does anyone from this website read the forums? I dont see why they dont fix this issue. That issue alone is probably the reason that this thread is almost 500 pages instead of half that since the questions have to be repeatedly asked and answered!

I'd get the XPS 15 in a second, but the video card sucks, esp for gaming at 1080p res.. I read that they are going to offer a better video card for that model soon. I like the laptop a lot, but playing a game like everquest, there isn't much real estate on the screen to fit all the windows. I'm used to my Dell xps 17" running at 1080, so its a pretty big change. Too bad the new xps 17 is so big, can get a very good deal on those now.

Anyone had a problem with the blu-ray player? Mine was making a grinding noise - almost 4 hours on phone with HP tech - send new one...

Received dvd writer/player instead of replacement blu-ray. Another 2 hours on phone - new blu-ray s/b on the way.

    Thoughts?

I ordered a DV7T Quad Edition in January. I subsequently recieved a recall notice regarding the Intel chipset.

I called HP on May 14 to return the unit. The representative explained 1) she could NOT issue a refund in any way, as refunds could only be done by case managers, and 2) I would have to wait until a case manager called me back. When I expressed concern that the case manager may call me back after the May 15th deadline, she exaplined that 1) since I called on May 14, I could still get the refund, and 2) the deadline was extended to May 31.

I received a call from a case manager "Leonard" on May 16th, who explained that he could NOT issue a refund or even a replacement, as the deadline as passed. He indicated he heard a similar story from another customer being told about the May 31 deadline, but would still not issue a rufund on my case. He said the supervisors were busy running a business, and would not transfer me to his supervisor.

This is clearly unethical business practice. I called within the deadline, and HP refused to process my refund.

    Nope.

Anyone considered flashing their 6770 to Firepro? Specs are close, but probably not the same.

I'm wondering if this is why some folks have been having some video decoding issues with the 6770 early on before some driver updates.

In previous HD 6000-series cards, AMD’s Universal Video Decoder was upgraded to version 3.0 which supported BluRay 3D codecs, hardware decoding for DivX / xVid and a list of other improvements. The HD 6700-series however carries over Juniper’s UVD 2.0 so none of these new formats are processed through the GPU.

When I put my dv6 to sleep, the screen turns off, but I noticed that the USB ports are still active. I have a USB Hub connected to one usb port which has a light indicating that it is on. After, putting to sleep, the light on the hub remains on whereas in my previous notebook (compaq) it used to turn off. Also, on another usb port, I have a wireless keyboard-mouse transmitter connected. And, I could wake up my dv6 by moving the wireless mouse whereas in my previous notebook, I used to have a wired usb mouse attached and it could not wake up from sleep. I have tried both usb 2.0 as well as 3.0 ports, but the result is same. Also, I have checked in Device Manager, under Power Management of USB, the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power is checked.

So, anybody else has noticed this or only I am having this issue ?

    Hey Taxmantoo
How/where are you? I guess you're busy settling in with your new DV7. I get mine on 20th May. How are you finding the machine. You were going to do a clean install if I recall. Would you do anything differently? Anything to look out for?

On the Intel chipset, yes. No heat, no noise, great performances.
On the 6770 not so much, still a step up from previous Pavillions but my card still reaches 75° while gaming at stock.
A bit warm but not hot.And the fan can be adjusted, use silent or optimized mode and it's ok but the temps get high.
Use the full cooling mode and the card stays below 65 but with some disturbing noise.
The middle setting is ok with headphones while gaming.
Average temps, some noise but acceptable.

Got a uestion though, when i did my clean install and reinstalled everything i lost the Beats audio part of the OSD, when you press fn+B the Beats Logo doesnt appear anymore and i dont know if the function is still activated.
But when i lower the sound i can still see the "Beats disc" rotating.

    Any solutions ?
    thx

The computer that I did the clean install, I would have NOT used certain internet instructions for moving the user files to D: (this was on a machine with a small SSD for C :).
What worked for me was editing the registry to put the default user path on D:, making a new user account and deleting the old one.

I'd also install HP Support Assistant/Coolsense from the beginning.

If you do a clean install of Win7 and then install SP1 on a SSD, don't forget to clean up the old win7 files afterwards.

Ok, I'm almost totally convinced to buy this laptop with the upgraded graphics card, both batteries, and the 640/7200 HD. I think my final price after those upgrades comes to $990.xx after coupons and tax.

To put everything into perspective, the desktop PC I'm using right now is a 2003 Gateway with Windows XP and the Pentium 4CPU 2.00GHz 1.99 GHz, with only 2GB of RAM and a 111GB capacity HD. Oh, and not to mention that my monitor is only an old 15 inch non-HD flatscreen.

So to put it gently, I'm working with an old piece of crap here and have gotten to the point where it is a nightmare to use. So just about anything else would be better than what I have right now. I could go into any store and buy anything off the shelf and it would be better than this. I don't want to do that though, I don't want to start at the bottom of the barrel with the new one.

Many who purchase new notebooks wish to perform a clean install of Win 7 Without the bloatware and there are several ways to accomplish this as mentioned in this thread in various places. I just discovered another method to accomplish this which I did not know about previously. And it is provided to us by HP. See this link: HP Notebook PCs - Using System Recovery, Factory Reset and Minimized Image Recovery Options - c02638587 - HP Business Support Center

It states in the link that the following Minimized Image Recovery is an available choice!

    Minimized Image Recovery

Minimized Image Recovery does the following:

    Re-installs the original operating system.

    Re-installs all original hardware drivers.

Re-installs HP essential software (i.e., HP Support Assistant, HP Recovery Manager, etc.).

Does not install trial applications or trial games.

If there are user-created partitions on the hard drive, the HP Recovery Manager prompts you for permission to remove them or leave them intact.

This sounds quite painless as an alternat to clean wipe and reinstall all drivers. Anyone try this and care to report back to us?

I agree that it is an easier method than the more involved clean install methods but it is not the same as a clean install. But for my uses I think it is the route I will use when and if I upgrade to SSD.

I have always used it - it is completely painless and leaves the recovery partitions intact (a big plus for me in case things fail).

    basically what i've done is:
Before starting, get GParted and windows 7 recovery disc created onto 2 dvd/cds

    1) use minimized system restore first thing
    2) copy out swsetup from c:\ onto external harddrive for backup
    3) use gparted to get rid of 200mb system partition (completely useless for anyone not using drive encryption)
    4) move windows partition to the beginning of the drive, shrink it to 200gb (completely arbitrary), and create a data partition from the free space.
    5) use windows 7 recovery cd to automatically restore boot record.

now my drive looks like this:
    (Start)
    Windows Partition
    Data partition
    Recovery partition
    hp_tools partition
    (End)

and everything is functional - i can still do system recovery without using DVDs, reinstall drivers, run diagnostic tests in hp_tools, etc...

in fact, after i did this, i just made a disk image using acronis of the windows partition. in case of any screwup (virus, messed up formatting, etc etc), i can restore the entire thing to pristine condition in about 5 minutes.

Any idea if you're able to restore to a USB-connected drive?

Ideally I'd like to throw my incoming 128GB SSD in an external USB case I have and run the restore to that, then swap the drives.

Anyone have any problems with their wireless? I just got my laptop and connecting to my wireless is so spotty, it's slow and drops randomly. There are other people in my house with laptops that aren't having problems which leads me to believe it's the card. I updated the drivers and still nothing. I can barely even connect to the internet on it now.

EDIT : I think I may have fixed it, had to force my router's mode to "Up to 300 Mbps" from it being at 54 Mbps

I just received my dv6tq and i love it so far. The screen isn't all that bad. Although i am now thinking of returning it and getting the sager np130. It has the 460m gpu. Will there be a significant gain in performance between the two for the extra cash?

Although the 460m might be a bit faster than the 6770m you have to remember you'll be using a higher res with the 460m which is put extra strain on it and might result in lower fps vs the 6770 on the smaller res. Just something to think about

Wow, I would EXPECT a big improvement if the screen was set to a non-native setting and the GPU was scaling to fit.

    Just got my shipping notification!

    Edit: And of course HP JUST RELEASES a DV7t with a 2GB GDDR5 6770M and a 1080P screen...

Worst luck EVER. i'd reorder but appearently they're not accepting coupons on this version and it has no rebates so its stock. 1080P Display is a $150 upgrade and the 2GB card is an extra $50 over the 1GB (so a total of $75 upgrade.)

Since it currently has no coupons or rebates it's $1865.80 for my configuration but with the 2GB card and 1080P Screen... Cannot afford that.. Plus I think thats way to much.

All I know is i'm going to be looking for that 1080P Screen part number very soon.

    Screenshot below.

Well, last night I gave in and placed my order, and it's a good thing I did.
This morning I just did a test to see if it was still active, and nope, it's dead - both the HP discount and the coupon code. What cost me $990.56 last night would now be $1,409.79 this morning. The deal will be active again before too long, but not right now.

Anyway, I'm with you all now!

    Here are my specs:

    dv7t Quad Ed
    • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    • 2nd generation Intel(R) Quad Core(TM) i7-2630QM (2.0 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) w/Turbo Boost up to 2.9 GHz
    • 1GB GDDR5 Radeon(TM) HD 6770M Graphics [HDMI, VGA]
    • FREE Upgrade to 6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 640GB 7200RPM Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    • No Additional Office Software
    • FREE Upgrade to Norton Internet Security(TM) 2011 - 15 Month Subscription (activation required)
    • One 6-Cell and One 9-Cell Lithium-Ion Battery
    • 17.3" diagonal HD+ HP BrightView LED Display (1600 x 900)
    • FREE Upgrade to Blu-ray player & SuperMulti DVD burner
    • HP TrueVision HD Webcam with Integrated Digital Microphone and HP SimplePass Fingerprint Reader

    Seriously!?

I just had to cancel one and reorder another dv6tqe to get the meory upgrade i wanted and then they give the hd screen option this morning. Complete bull****.

I knew buying tech that it would get obsolete quick, but I just ordered the thing! The coupon for 30% off still works...gah! that stupid hd screen is in reach, only about $100 more...but I'm not canceling again! too much of a hassle

I can't find info about 6770 2GB version in the net. Is it going to make difference compared to 6770 1GB ?
About 1080 display - I plan not to order it, I will order with 1600x900 because on 1080 the letters will appear too small.
