How DVD is work if ports 2-5 are faulty and DVD is on port 4 and how can I check then controller is broken ?
-
and how else do you think you should check if it's broken? chug a dvd in and see if it plays -___- -
This is just great... my DVD drive is on port 4.
Which means I'm screwed.
Maybe I'll pretend I don't know about this. The warranty is 1 year. When 11 month passed maybe I'll go to HP support and ask them if they'll replace my device with Ivy Bridge lol -
-
Has anybody gotten a straight non-bullsh** answer from HP about whether or not the dv7s are affected as well? On the HP website, if you try to build a HP dv7 SB system now, it has pushed build date all the way to March 1st (which probably means, waiting for new chips from Intel). But, mine went into production and is still scheduled for Feb. 14th shipping. Also, unlike Toshiba or Samsung, they haven't recalled any of the retail SB laptops either. So, just wanted to see if anybody has gotten a hold of HP and told about what laptop models are impacted and what they are going to do if the port does fail after the warranty period.
-
I chated with HP tech support last pm. They are are aware of the problem and will replace the motherboard after the warranty if the SATA port malfunctions. They asked that I check back in a few days for an official HP response.
-
Great, according to the Intel Rapid Storage Technology tool my Bluray drive is on port 4 and eSATA is on port 5.
-
guess we are affected afterall.
most people should still be within the 21 day return period though - although a better solution would be if HP decided to let us return it still even after the 21 days (aka when the version with the new chipset are available), so we can minimize the down time. -
this is what I got from HP support few min ago :
his is a Generic News. We at HP check all the hardware before applying them to your products. HP Engineers test and ensure that functionality of the Hardware is upto the Industry Standards. In case if there is a mass issue regarding any particular hardware then from HP's end you will recieve an Email stating the failure of the product with the remedy. -
-
For us that just got our new HP SB laptops with possibly defective chipsets.
.
Instead of returning the laptop to HP ASAP, I would like to see HP simply provide the 3 year extended warrant for free ...
...first off it would compensate us for the hassle......
but all so ...
the problem with the chipset is suppose to only show up over time so end user could continue to use and return for service when they see the issue and/or a later date after Intel and HP has the parts in stock to fix
The up side for HP is they would not be slammed all at one with all these laptops coming back at the same time -

Hi, I spoke with Intel Tech Support and they said all controllers for Sandy Bridge are affected... They don't have plan replace broken motherboard in next few months because they don't have new devices and plan how this should work. I spoke with HP support and they said we don't have any info about this issue. For HP technical support this issue doesn't exist yet...
-
Well, at this point Dell, Samsung, and New Egg, among others have provided a statement and preliminary plans. So far for HP..."HP did not immediately respond to a request for comment."

Ideal scenario is to keep using the device until Ivy Bridge is out. Then return to HP and ask them if they could replace the dv6t with Ivy Bridge model of equal value(price tag). =) -

HP has pulled DV6t quad edition from its website. When you configure the laptop and add it to your cart the following message appears: "We're sorry!
We no longer have the PC you're trying to customize, or some of its components, or the server you want.
Please choose another customizable PC or one of our ready-to-ship PCs, or choose another server. You can also call our Sales Center at 1 (800) 351-9687.
Thank you for your understanding." -
What kind of battery life is everyone getting? I've got the new i7 chip and the SSD. Larger of the 6cell batteries and I'm only getting 2hr20min even in the power saver mode. Far cry from the 6:30 they describe on the website. Battery life is what sold me on this vs AW.
So far, I love the speed of this thing, but with the Intel issue, terrible touchpad buttons and poor battery life, this one will probably go back soon. -
clemson, i have the exact same setup - the new SB, SSD, 6cell enhanced or whatever, and i'm getting under 2hr i power saver mode. Is there anything I can do about this?
-
-
I understand they battery life can vary, but the specs said 6.5hrs. I'd be ok with around 4, but 2.5 with the extended battery is not even close!

Ok need help with the audio setup because it's just odd.
I both stream radio and do voip calls from my laptop
I normaly just use the laptop speakers and mic...
But then somtimes jack in a headset with mic (2 anlog jacks, in and out, not usb)
I just want when I jack in a headset with mic for it to kill the laptop speakers and mic and just have the headset with mic as the only live i/o...(like what used to be normal in the old days
Or even give me a popup like my old laptop when I jack in if I want one or both live
Because for some reason on this stupit thing... you jack in and ....nothing!
You got to play with seting all over the place to kill the laptop speakers and mic an get it to the headset with mic only...ever time....
I just want it simple.... jack in a headset with mic..sent all audio i/o to them...and shut off the laptop speakers and mic.....unjack the headset with mic ... turn on laptop speakers and mic....you think this would be simple -
Thought I would try and move the optical drive from port 5 to port 1.
Removed the back cover, however port 1 connector is not present on the DV6, only the solder joints which is slightly covered but a piece of the plastic case housing.
I am guessing the DV6 is the same motherboard as the DV7 version, but it appears that is has be manufactured without the extra drive connector physically present. -

i still have till next week to decide if I'm going to return mines or not. hopefully by then hp has an announcement on their game-plan... -

I got my return authorization for my dv6t QE today and am sending it back tomorrow. I'm not returning it due to the SB issues, though. I need to work on my laptop and 1366x768 res isn't conducive to IT work. Add in the terrible trackpad and mediocre display panel and I'm all too happy to wipe my hands clean of the thing. I will admit that the SB processor was a solid performer with which I was greatly pleased (notwithstanding the just-disclosed Intel gaffe).

I talked with a Intel Rep today because their website doesn't mention that the problem affects the systems with 2630 QM.. only systems with Intel® Core™ i7-2820QM, Intel® Core™ i7-2720QM.

I talked with rep to make sure that 2630 QM was not affected.. but the rep doesn't seem knowledgeable on the subject as he was posting stock responses.. but he gave the following link to utility that identifies the Chipset when I informed him that I don't know how to identify the chipset. Thought it might be useful to others as I don't have my laptop with me at the moment:

I'm going to call HP tomorrow and ask when the deadline is for me to return my DV6. If I had the option to keep it and return for an equal machine with a new processor when they are available I would do it but don't want to be past the 21 days without knowing if that option will be available.

My Wife just gave me a dv-4006tx for my birthday and I think I am in the right thread. Here in Oz the market is a little different and 15.6" range of pavilion laptops all use the same i7-2630QM CPU. Its only when you get into the 17" (dv7) do they start to offer faster i7 CPU's. Thankfully am I not affected by the Sandy Bridge hardware flaw.
Specs here.
I chose this 15.6" model for $1240 AUD as its the start of the discrete graphics models and a powerhouse of a machine. I figured upgrades from HP are hugely overpriced so would do them myself. I was thinking of selling the original 4GB ram on Ebay for $350 (HP charge $499) which would pay for 8GB of RAM and a 750GB WD Scorpio Black for the same money... good idea? Would this cause problems with my extended 3 year warranty?
I saw everyone complaining about the touchpad, get yourself the logitech notebook kit. I swear by this bit of gear. It's a keyboard/mouse/laptop stand for under 85 USD. You really need a stand for long term use or your neck will get sore, I am tall so I put the stand on top of the box it comes in! The mouse has rubberized sides for excellent grip and the keyboard is superb and quite portable. The receiver is literally 4mm wide after you plug it in, runs both devices and Windows 7 recognizes it instantly.
Nice to meet you all

2) good luck selling the 4gb ram for $350... you can easily find 2 4gb sticks on ebay for $120 -
-
I have the same model.
SATA ports 4 and 5 are affected on this model, that means your eSATA and DVD drive are attached to these. -
Whats next anyone know? I mean I am not a huge fan of this laptop but its my work computer. Now I need to return it and will be without a computer... Anyone know when the Envy will be coming out? Also what is with this MASSIVE power cord and on the right hand side of the computer. Come on HP people are mostly right handed and thats where the mouse goes.
-
I contacted with Hp support today. They said we won't replace any laptop in next 2 weeks. They don't have any official communication when and what will be done... All manufactures said something except HP but we don't have choice we have to wait when big brother will decide something.
-
I just contacted HP and they said an email will be sent out to those affected claiming not all SB owners are affected. She also said we have 6 months from the time of purchase to return for a refund or replacement if you are affected.
-
I just called HP. They issued me an RMA with prepaid shipping back to HP. Very professional rep. Asked if I wanted Intel/HP solution emailed to me once it becomes available. Was also willing to exchange for a similiar spec first generation proc.
-
-
Despite the touch pad and lackluster screen, I was going to keep this machine.
But now with the SB problems, I just RMA'd it. Too bad really. Guess I'll just wait for a $500 off coupon after all the issues are worked out. I wish a better screen was an option. I would be willing to pay $150 to $200 more for a better screen.
-
And guys, don't listen to HP on this issue. They'd be more than willing to flat-out lie to reduce the number of returns. -
olakino, I tried conntact wit tech support and they said we don't have any recall sandy bridge yet.I called 15 min ago... Did you get RMA for recall or 21 days return ?
-
Well, I have another 18 days or so to think about it.
I wanted to keep this one too...
My DV6 with an i5 is sitting right next to me....ready to go to FedEx this afternoon. It sucks that I'm sending back the "working" one. (Not the my i7 does not work...but I don't like it being a ticking time bomb) -
-
How exactly does the 21 day return policy work? I received my laptop on January 19th, 21 days from which is February 9th. Do I have until then to initiate RMA? Or does it need to be shipped by FedEx by that date? Or does HP have to receive it by that date?
I want to wait as long as possible to hear this official word from HP before I RMA.
I asked HP Chat Support to clear up the return policy but it was like talking to a brick wall. -
