I'm quite sure Intel is hard at work on correcting the chip as they already mentioned they plan to use silicone to fix the problem. HP has a ship date of 3/1/11 for dv6t's on the website so I expect I will get a replacement sometime in March if I process an exchange. Besides, I can wait because we already have 2 computers + my work pc.![]()

ideally, we should be able to send it in for a replacement unit once they are available. that way, we would have minimal down time between the two. -
I received my dv6tqe a week ago so my return period ends in February. I have heard that the new chips will be available in March. Since I am in great need of my computer, I was thinking about keeping it until the new chips are released. Will hp let me return my dv6tqe for one with a new chip even after the 21 day period is over?

Moderator: can we have all of these different Sandy Bridge recall threads consolidated? It's a bit like herding cats trying to keep up with all of this. -
Something more offical from HP's website, if it make you feel any better:
Intel Chipset Design Issue May Affect Certain HP Desktop and Notebook PCs - c02712015 - HP Business Support Center -

Sucks to be me! I'll see what HP have to say in Australia. I added a dv6 owners thread on overclocker's for any other aussies who own one.
-
Got the following from Costco today, for those interested in how they are handling it. I already have the DV6 for a few weeks now. I'm inclined to keep it until new ones appear, as there is nothing out there that compares. I don't want to pay the same for older tech.
=====================
Thank you for ordering the HP computer from Costco.com.
This PC, like equivalent models from other manufacturers contains the Intel 6-series chipset. We have been notified by Intel that a just-discovered design flaw could cause the serial-ATA, or SATA, ports within the chipset to degrade over time. Such a scenario would affect the performance of hard disk drives and DVD drives within a PC.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
* If this is a recent order of which you have not received a shipping notification, we may be in the process of cancelling your order. If this is the case, you will be receiving a separate cancellation notice via email.
* If you have already received a shipping notice and have not received your computer, you may refuse the shipment. Responding to this email to confirm your refusal will expedite your refund.
* If the PC is in your possession you may return the product to any Costco warehouse for a full refund. You may also respond to this email or contact the number below to receive a UPS label to return the product for a full refund.
We value you as a customer and appreciate your business. If you should have additional questions and/or concerns, please contact us at customer service or call 1-800-955-2292. -
It would make good sense for most people here, that are already happy with their DV6, to keep it until they can get either a refund or replacement.
Keep in mind, if you want a refund to buy something else right now! There will not be anything new (Sandy Bridge) around until the chipset is fixed / updated to C stepping for sometime yet.
With saying that, you can get a couple of months usage out of your new Sandy Bridge HP DV6, for free
Then decide on either a refund (buy better model or brand) or replacement when everything is good
Maybe a seperate thread can be made a sticky (for a limited time) in regards to the recall of various HP's that will be affected by the chipset defect. Mods?
Everyone, can we please move on from the known Intel chipset issue, and focus on the great machine us DV6 owners believe it to be. Keep the posts on topic about the actual laptop and not about the recall. e.g. How great the GDDR5 is, benchmarks etc... -

How do you overclock the HD 6570?
I use GPU-Z and found that HP lowered the clock rate of the Radeon HD6570 in dv6tqe to Core:600, MEM:800
According to notebookcheck.net:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-HD-6570M.41479.0.html
The core clock should be 650, and MEM should be 900
I tried MSI Afer Burner overclocking tool. But can't raise the clock above Core:600 MEM:800 set by HP. -
Only two options that will be given by HP when the recall starts are:
1. Refund
2. Replacement -
2. Browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI Afterburner\
3. Open MSI Afterburner.cfg
4. Change EnableUnofficalOverclocking = 1 (0 is off, 1 is on)
5. Save file. If asked to overwrite, click yes.
You should be able to overclock at ease to 750 / 900 right off the bat. Take it up from there, find your most stable limits. -
I checked the MSIAfterburner.cfg file and found this 2 entry that seems to involve overclocking
UnofficialOverclockingEULA =
UnofficialOverclockingMode = 0
But I still can't raise the clock/mem over 600/800. Even after setting UnofficialOverclockingMode = 1
Any idea? -
http://majorgeeks.com/MSI_Afterburner_d6254.html
Right click on MSI Afterburner.cfg file, go to properties, and make sure that the check box 'read only' is unchecked. Run through steps 1-5 again.
Download GPU-Z as a secondary info tool. You may need to click between the 'Graphics Card' and 'Sensors' tabs to keep the data read out current.
techPowerUp! :: Downloads -
However, it still doesn't work. I made sure the read-only is not checked. I also re-open the .cfg file to see if the value is updated.
BTW, My MSI afterburner is version 2.10 beta 7. The one in your link is version 2.0.0 Maybe I'll try v2.0.0 and see if it works.
I've attached an image below.Attached Files:

-
I am using version 2.0.0, I must be behind the times, but it works.
Appears that there is an extra line in your version under ATIADLHAL, and many more line above that. Not sure why yours does not work
Try uninstalling it, go into program files and delete the MSI folder if it is still there, and then install version 2.0.0. Modify the config file.
EnableUnofficalOverclocking = 1 is the only thing I changed and it worked right away. -
My 6570 is getting 76 Celcius in FurMark
(Core:650, Mem:900 after 10 minutes, Room temp: 28 Celcius)
Is this a safe tempurature? -
Furmark stress the GPU hard, that temp is good.
In comparison, your CPU can get upto 90c under heavy stress with prime95. Turbo will be dropped at this temp to x20 multiplier, and will throttle down the CPU even lower in some cases, to maintain ~90c. This is the normal high temp for the CPU, as thermal overload and shutdown is 100c.
You will find even under heavy system load the GPU will be lower than the CPU.
The DV6 cooling system consist of two heat pipes attachted to a single heatsink and fan combo. Check out the diagram.
1-2 = CPU
3-4 = GPUAttached Files:

Anyone have any idea when this will be available in Europe?
And did anyone have written a review of it? If yes, what page? -
Something different....Am I the only one who thinks that the display screen is too glossy and reflective to the point of having to adjust the positioning of the computer in a well lit area to clearly see the screen because of a lot of ambient reflection. I have the touchscreen that I like except for excessive reflectivity.

I'm sure glad there was a defect with the dv6tqe. I just learned that HP will be releasing a new dv6 and dv7 in March. Therefore, when the new dv6 arrives, ask hp for a refund, and order the brand new baby.
-
-
Have anyone successfully refunded this model?
I live in Thailand and the HP support here don't offer refund yet. -
Check it out, there is a hands-on with the new model at Laptop Mag below. Also, some websites (ZDNet, PC Mag) have set a Feb. 27th date for release for these new laptops, but that remains to be seen:
Hands-on: Slick HP Pavilion dv6 and dv7 Sport Brushed Aluminum Designs, Beats Audio with Quad Speakers -
Notice,
1. No eSATA.
2. Cooling vent looks larger. Hopefully better cooling, as the current cooling on the DV6 sucks big (your imaginative word here). -
-
Appears that there are more exhaust vents slots on the new DV6 model, seen on the left hand side, 15 upper and 15 lower. Although the top row of vents appears to get smaller as they move closer to the front end of the laptop.
I have spotted a new row of 8 vents on the back of the laptop. I would assume these will also be exhaust vents, if so that means hot air blasting over your left leg when used on your lap. In that case, would be better if these were drawing in air instead.
In any case, looks like the result of the cooling system is going to be better. Providing the fan and heat sink assembly has been upgraded to cope with the 45w quads more effectively.
The current DV6 with Sandy Bridge has 11 upper and 16 lower exhaust vents, and like the Clarksfield i7 still runs hot as hell, slightly improved though due to the new microarchitecture.Attached Files:

As I was reviewing the HP policy for the dv6tqe, I noticed that they mentioned that I could switch the system for another "comparable system". Do they mean comparable by price or specs?
-
Any idea on when the current Dv6 models will be restocked with SB?
Best Regards

Great idea! I love that it doesn't have the annoying left column of function keys.
Also read just now that Intel is shipping the recalled SB chips to manufacturers who want to use them and disable the bad ports. Makes sense, and would work in this new laptop as an example, if there is no eSATA and ports 1 and 2 are used for the drive/cdrom. -
It is nice...but the backlit keyboard is what I really want.
Plus, it makes the screen is really reflective since it is basically Infinity View.
I think I'll go with a new dv7...but I want confirmation from HP that I can hold onto my dv6 until the end of April. -
-
There is a web page within HP's site with some minor information of what the options are, and whatever you're as told by the HP support person you may have spoken with.
HP needs to post something official under recall option or simular on their home page. -
Where are you seeing info on the new DV6/7? If they are updating this model and doing away with the horrible keyboard design, track pad buttons and maybe adding 1080p screen I would hang onto this and wait to return it for one of the new models.
Edit: is this it??

LOL I hit the calculator key twice just now trying to copy and paste this link!
DUH! I just looked back at the previous page and found the links to the article and video. Looks really nice, I like the color of the current DV6 better but I'll happily take the new one with the regular keyboard and in the video it looks like he is clicking the track pad button pretty easily, unlike on mine where you have to push with all your might to click the button. I wish he would have mentioned screen resolution options. -
-
This is just in time! I was going to return this laptop next week and wait to buy something different when the SB fix was out. I'm going to call HP tomorrow and try to get them to commit to exchanging this for a new DV6 with the same specs once they come out.
The trackpad buttons aren't that big a deal for me anymore but trying to do any work with this keyboard layout is killing me. Niether article mentioned it so I'm guessing it won't be an option but a 1080 screen would a huge plus. -
here is another link from youtube on the new bronze dv6 and dv7:

Talk to Hp support to get a confirmation on your side.

I plan to exchange my DV6t Quad when the new DV6 comes out next month! Can't wait!
-
-
I feel bad for anyone who purchased in early December....and the 21 days return date expired before the SB chips came out. I used a $500 of coupon on an old i5, but RMA'd that bad boy once SB hit the street. I was able the snag another $500 off coupon on a this SB i7, and if that will carry over to a refreshed Envy in a couple of months.....I'm making out like a bandit. Good on HP to carry over the coupon if true. -
Hi, I'm new here to the forums... my order for an HP Pavilion dv6t Quad Edition due to ship this week was cancelled (i7-2820QM).
Oddly, i called last week and the CSR said it would still ship. Then I called again today and they said it was cancelled and to order a comparable one.
Which they said was the HP Pavilion dv6t Select Edition (i7-840QM).
That sounds lame - I need a laptop badly, and i want the fast sandy bridge one I originally ordered... should I just wait? What would you guys do?
Also, I've seen a couple of posts mentioning the track pad and screen. What are the issues? Is it with these components:
- 15.6" diagonal High Definition HP BrightView LED Display (1366x768)
- TouchScreen with HP TouchSmart's intuitive multi-touch applications (includes HP TrueVision Webcam)
Thanks!
-Dan -
-
The problem with the pad is that the buttons are part of the pad...so the mouse/cursor jumps all over the place. The screen is kinda blah.....hopefully the new one will have a better screen.
Also, the new version gets rid of the silly keys on the left hand side. Hopefully it will still offer a back-lit keyboard. -
Let say that the next gen HP when release in 1-2 months from now, uses the same 6570 video but is released with GDDR3 instead of the current GDDR5.
Which is unlikely
Would you still replace your current DV6 Sandy Bridge model for it? -
I called support and was eventually told the same thing. The return period has been extended to April 28th and I can hang onto this and exchange it for the new model as soon as it is available. I also made sure they noted my $500 coupon and they said it would apply to the new machine when I do the exchange.
I'll be keeping a close eye on the release of the new model. -
