I need to get into more games, but WoW plays really well, no lag or problems. The game that really impressed me was Titan's Quest, on high settings. Older game, but has memory leaks, and some bugs, and my machine just blazed right through the problems.
Was never able to play the game on high settings, and it looks great!

Hey morx, have you done or can you do a benchmark of your ssd so I can compare it with mine?

Hello all, been following NBR for a few months, first post.
Got my dv6t se a couple weeks ago (actually my 2nd, first one had a faulty optical drive, had to RMA). Went with the i7 720qm since I will be running scientific programs that utilize it as I pursue my masters degree.
Other specs: 6GB ram, 500GB HD, bluray
Had been a Dell user for a long time. Was at first set on the XPS16 but after waiting for 3+ months after ordering...and no help from Dell customer service...got a bad taste in my mouth.
At one point Dell told me that my order had been cancelled, followed up a few days later by an XPS16 showing up on my door step....which did not include the bluray drive or screen I had ordered. ?? Did not even power it up, had it on its way back within a couple hours of arrival.
Also LOVE the case/finish of the SE. I checked out a few Envys at the local box stores and I def. prefer the select edition finish to the Envy.
Was hesitant about the screen resolution, but I figured since 80% of the time I'm hooked up to a monitor it would not be an issue.
Cheers. -

Lol my quad is awesome. As of the time of this post I am playing cod mwf2 and the temps haven't gone above 75C and I have everything on full, 4x aa and full resolution all textures as high as they go, everything on max. And it hasn't been oc'd yet. After 2more hours ill post a pic of the temps thorough the entire game.
-
I'm from New England, referring to Envy 15, I'm guessing the 14 has the same finish right?

Well it doesn't really matter if you remove them in the registry so much, theres only like 5 or 6 programs that i uninstalled leaving most of the touchsmart applications for movies and other such things. But basically in the registry navigate to the startup folder and delete items you don't want starting up. And then go under the programs folder and delete residual settings and such from apps you uninstalled. Or type msconfig into the start prompt and go under startup items and deselect anything you don't want.

By the way Kiitens, love the pic. Good stuff.

My dv6 came DOA yesterday (after the Alaska customs issue). The OS would not start and neither would the recovery partition. They sent recovery discs overnight to reinstall the OS, but had no luck. Called HP and they are in the process of refunding/reordering the laptop. Problem is that it won't be here until the end of July. I'm really hoping this laptop will work because I cannot wait another 2 weeks because college starts soon after.
Aside from the fact it wouldn't start, the hardware seemed nice. -
-
Sure, let me type it up and add some screens. Be about an hour from now, because I'm running a game to test how hot the i7-840 gets.

If you use revo-uninstaller it will delete the registry keys for you...

For those of you who are annoyed with the multi-touch scrolling, you can set the touchpad to use one-finger scrolling (slide along the right edge of the touchpad to scroll like other laptops).
If you haven't got it already, download the Synaptics Pointing Device driver/controller from HP's website ( http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4063&lc=en&cc=uk&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=4252478#N786)and then in the settings, you can enable one finger scrolling.
I've found this to be much more convenient and user-friendly than the multi-touch scrolling. Hope this helps.
Edit: Also concerning the heat, my laptop is running much cooler now in the high 40s, compared to mid 60s yesterday. Perhaps there is some sort of break-in time for the thermal pads, like another poster mentioned. -
ok so how do I know what is safe to uninstall?
btw: this isn't on a dv6tse. Im doing this as sort of a test run on my dv3000. -
-
Maybe the packaging is causing the DOA cases? Because I am sure HP at least tries to turn the laptop on after it is assembled if they don't do anything else...
-
I'm removing programs using Revo and after having only installed like 10-15 programs, there's a total of 76 installed applications.
Fun. -
Vongo
Norton (use the norton removal tool)
Hp Photosmart Essentials
Hp Easy Setup (also delete the online services folder in program files, after you have uninstalled)
Hp Games (and delete the folder in program files, after you have uninstalled)
Disable HP Total Care Advisor (Do not uninstall it if you want to keep the recovery partition)
Hp Update (Its better to manually update from Hp.com)
Hp Wireless Assistant (unless you want to manually enable and disable wireless and bluetooth)
Rhapsody
Also go to program files, and delete the folder called "Online Services"
AFTER uninstalling each program, go to the program files folder and delete their respective directories.
But each of those things seems to have an important purpose. Ah i'm just too concerned something won't function correctly if I unistall something. One a side note, do I have to buy a seperate windows 7 disk to do a clean install? -
Its all about your own preferences. If you think you might have a use for a program, or want to keep things automated, then don't uninstall.
However I do recommend uninstalling Norton no matter what and giving Avast or AVG a shot. (I prefer Avast). -
The package and everything in it seemed fine when I got it... Maybe it was shivering too much while stuck in Alaska?

No answer so far on using gPartEd to expand the main partition. It should work in theory, but I would like to know if someone's tried it.
-
Well, good news guys, looks like after all the issues they had with delays at customs they learned something. My laptop was just release from its clearence delay after only 24 hours. So its a day behind, but Ill take that over a week.
Now I am just hoping it comes in one piece. -
Looks like they learned from the mistakes that happened to us
-
Hmm, what do you guys think is the probability that HP will change the "free upgrades" on the dv6tse?
I'm kinda disappointed because I missed out on the $400 coupon...again...so I'm trying to compensate for that -
-
Heres my temps after playing four hours of codmwf2 on full max settings including AA, and then running the highlighted tabs at the bottom the entire game.
-
-
Although I didn't really want to spend the extra money on them anyway, it is really odd that all the i7's are running cooler than any of the i5's. Weird indeed.
-
Takes like 2 minutes on these fast machines. Do a clean install, and then spend 15 minutes installing the drivers. It's really, that easy.
-
Just had coretemp running on my laptop screen while playing on external and noticed that the multiplier was jumping all over the place, saw that I did not have performance energy option (fail) so now it's at max clock all the time while playing which improved the few small freezes I seemed to get (thought it was just a lot to render). Temperature on the CPU goes up to around 80 now and fan is like an airplane, same for everyone else?
-
-
That is indeed very weird. It doesn't make sense at all. -
i5-450 temps are pretty much everywhere. Even though I'm cheating and running this laptop on top of a notebook cooler (without fans, just raised) my i5-450 temps have jumped from 30C to anywhere near 80C.
Even more odd is the fact that a 100% stressed GPU should use more power but the GPU maxes out at 65C.
Oh well. -
What the hell is this T_T, dual cores definitely should have lower temps, right? -
-
Haha no, no stress its running anywhere between 30C-45C.
High stress, aka Bad Company 2, at 100% runs it down to 70 - 80C, there's an odd 5-10C gap between both cores.
=/ -
I do wonder if the i7 has a different internal heatsink then the i5 setup. If not, then I would attribute the less heat to a lower ghz ratting. The i7 can get more work done at 1.6Ghz versus the i5 running harder at 2.4Ghz.
-
Power2Go what an interesting observation! I like your way of thinking here!
-
The i7's have the same turbo feature that the i5's do, and they shut down unused processor cores. An i7 @ 1.6ghz turbo'd up to 2.8 will have the same performance (if not a bit better because of more available cache) than an i5 at the same 2.8ghz turbo speed.
ALSO, the core i7 mobile processors are being picked for ability to run at those high speeds with low voltages (remember, lower voltage = less heat output). When they shut down their idle cores and turbo up, they don't need as much of that precious voltage to get to those higher speeds than the i5's, which are held to such strict voltage requirements, and thus, produce less heat.
Of course, this is all speculation. We could figure it out by testing battery life between an i7 system with a 5650 and an i5 system w/5650 enabled, to take a bit more of an educated guess.
Btw: Mine should be here on the 22nd. :3
Edited to make more sense and added the battery part. -
Just brought the laptop outta Sleep, and man, do I wish that both palm rests stayed this cool all the time. It feels so good, until the left side warms up.
