The 5470 will be fine for light gaming and photoshop and will have no problem with 1080p movies but the 5650 is almost twice as powerful and the N930 beats the i5-430M as well. What games are you looking to play?

Only one I can think of is probably star craft 2 when its released and other real time strategy games. Don't play First person shooters, actually I don't play any games right now, but I just don't want to purchase something and regret it because its struggling to do everyday tasks in a year or two.

Also I multitask a lot, I usually have Adobe Illustrator, Visual Studio 2008, chrome with around 15 tabs, Firefox, IE and Opera open at the same time. I do web development so thats why I have all open at the same time. And numerous Chrome tabs for searching for issues etc. And when on break I would open Media Center on top of all of that.

So do you think the AMD will be a better choice? I really wanted a backlit keyboard though... but I guess I can do without.

The Intel version will handle everything that you want easily and if you want the backlit keyboard and bluray then go for it. You don't need the power of the AMD version.

How much battery life do you get with quadcore processor as opposed to dualcore i5s on 9 cell (both)? I ask as quadcores seem to have much less temps on processor loads as quadcore temps after heavy browsing was only like 46C..

I guess that's the tradeoff better processor less heat and less battery but i5 have more heat under load and more battery... Interesting!

On my 6 cell on an i7-840qm I can easily get 3 hours just web browsing. And then 4 if i activate all the power management settings.

mine didn't make the FedEx cut off time :( I guess that will add one more day to the shipping time... Can anyone comment on the size of the 9 cell battery? as in how much larger it actually is compared to the 6 cell? Thanks!

    See http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...ct-edition-owners-lounge-130.html#post6476469
In a sense it'd make sense as there's more cores to handle load..

This is why I picked the dual core 450m as it is one of the latest chips with twice the bus speed, think of bus as the highway and clock speed as the speed of cars on that highway.. so higher bus speed allows more data to transfer between chip nd other parts, quad core is has more cores to make up for it but the lack of switchable graphics kills battery

I got mine yesterday, and I've got no complaints with the keyboard--everything seems even there. Not crazy about the touchpad, but I'll mostly be using a mouse anyway. One thing that happens with the touchpad is that sometimes the two-finger scrolling just seems to stop working for a bit. When it does work it's also not nearly as nice and precise as the one on the Macbook Pro that I got to play with last year (my brother in--where else--San Francisco has one of those).

Tonight I'll install Steam onto it and see how it does on some games. If I don't want to download everything, is the correct procedure to back something up to DVD on a computer with the game installed (using Steam's local backup function), then restore from that backup onto the other computer? Also i'll want to check the temps with that utility you guys are using.

Oh, I did want to mention that the screen rez definitely seems a bit cramped, vertically (I'm spoiled by my desktop's 24 in. 1920x1200 monitor). The 1600x900 of the Envy line is sounding really good. Still the price on this thing was unbeatable.

Quick question: if I've already uninstalled some of the bloatware using RevoUninstaller, and installed Firefox, is it too late to create the infamous recovery discs? I honestly thought HP would ship some with an SSD-equipped laptop (I mean, 30 GB or so is no big deal on a huge hard drive, but on a 160GB SSD, come on!).

I haven't touched the recovery partition, so can I still make recovery discs from there? I am considering doing the full-on Windows reinstall to get that recovery partition space back.

But the overall core usage would be greater because unused cores, even when idling, have about a 20% usage, or so I've seen/heard.

Is there a burn-in / curing time for the thermal pads / grease? When I first got my laptop my left palm rest would be warm as heck, but now it's almost as cool as right palm rest. This is using the laptop on carpet too o_O.

Also, can you I7 guys play some bfbc2 or gta 4 / eflc / latd? I wanna see how hot you guys get lol.

    Room temperature is around 25-27*C.

2 hours playing HL2 :DM with 1080p screen and high settings, hard to compare FPS since it was a custom map. Cba to overclock for HL2 since it runs fine without it.

Oh and the mic is really good, been using it over my external one that pretty much picked up every sound in Sweden.

My palm rest only gets slightly warm, nothing that really notice unless you put a cold hand on it. I mean it gets very slightly warm. My dv6500 could cook an egg on the palmrest.

Any chance anyone who has an i5 processor and the 5650 could show what the temps are after playing BF:BC2 for a while? Also, what kind of fps you had and on what settings.

Skip back a couple of pages, I posted a pic of the temps. As for fps, it's not in the picture but I was averaging 40-50 fps on half medium (shadows and effect) the rest was high (detail and something else) and it was 1x MSAA and 2x AF.

    runs well.

Also, again, after playing bfbc2 for 2 hours on mostly high settings except for shadows, 1xaa, and 8xaf.

Was playing on my lap the whole time and never got burned lol. I remember an old dv4-1225dx I had would make super heat my legs through my jeans.

Yeah more of the heat goes up out the top than out the bottom. The bottom stays a little warm but the top gets hot. I'm not sure which I prefer...

I should just stop overclocking it, overclocking does bad things :(

Using torrents. Most preferably thepiratebay, because they check the torrents upload within the day their uploaded and remove junk virus torrents and other torrents claiming to be something their not. You'll need a torrent software to download, perhaps bittorrent or vuze for more advanced users. And then a good internet link.

They have multiplayer versions cracked, usually takes like 3 weeks after the game was released in stores. But no key is required. They either give you a integrated crack or a keygen to generate serials.

If you ever want a good multiplayer experience, the only way is to buy the game. Some games work with multi, but not the full version. They are completely free, "cracked" versions. But keep in mind downloading torrents is not fully legal, although i've never heard of a person getting caught o.o

Yeah by quite a bit. But the temperatures stay below 70, it's just the outside that gets hot. The laptop has quite a good if painful cooling system.

Just because people don't get caught (it's hard to trace it back to a person since an IP number is not like an ID) doesn't mean that it's legal. But since most developers does not send out any demos anymore the only ways to try a game is either lending it from a friend, internet café or downloading it. I buy games that are good but since so many are just console ports I don't want to support them all.

A lot of people have started receiving their ENVY 14's and quite a few of them are lemons and that bothers me quite a bit. If this persists I will definitely be getting a dv6tse because I leave for school in about a month and I don't have time to send back a lemon.

Thanks for the answer concerning the creation of recovery discs. Now another one--has anyone reading this tried using gPartEd (the free, open source partition editor) to delete the recovery partition and expand the main partition to take up its space? I'd rather do that than have to reinstall the OS and deal with the whole driver situation from scratch.
