Well after all this deciding and missing coupons, I'm getting a laptop through where I work. Supposedly it has the same specs and is an HP, but who knows what I'm getting. If it is this model, I'll be pretty happy, and will update with my own temperatures, etc. It is only $1100 for these specs though:
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-540M Dual Core processor (2.53GHz, 3MB L3 Cache)
with Turbo Boost up to 3.06GHz
6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
160GB (Solid State Drive Flash Module)
1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 switchable graphics [HDMI, VGA]
15.6" diagonal High Definition LED HP Brightview Widescreen Display
(1366x768)
No TouchScreen (includes HP TrueVision Webcam)
FREE Upgrade to Blu-ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer
Support
Intel Wireless-N Card
Backlit Keyboard with Fingerprint Reader
High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (standard)
Microsoft(R) Office Starter 2010
No additional security software
HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope
Edit: And to the person who was asking about coupons, the $200 stackable coupon showed up less than a day (not sure exactly how quickly) after the $400 coupon expired. I would expect another one to go up relatively quickly. -
Well mine is running at about 50-60 degree Celsius on light browsing.
-
Some of your guys' temps scare me =/
Average good temps seem to be hitting anywhere between 30 and 40 with light browsing.
90C for gaming? Even my HD 4890 doesn't get that hot -
It's not the 5650 hitting 90*c. It's the 450m. My 5650 oc'd tops out at 64*c gaming.
-
From previous posts the computer's temp "fixes" itself after a few days of usage, so I will be waiting for that
-
abaddon4180 Notebook Virtuoso
90C is okay as long as the computer itself isn't too hot and as long as the processor is not throttling itself.
-
Yea I definitely checked out my processor while playing games and at 90*c it was going full steam with turbo boost and all.

can someone open up their HP 3D DriveGuard System software from their hp dv6tse.. upon opening mines today casually i find out it says
its disabled because the notebook hard drive is not supported.... i have the hitachi hd..
wth why does hp have this software on this laptop and advertise this feature?
Can someone confirm this before i call and make a fool out of myself?
On a sidenote without doing a cleaninstalling because i sort like some of hte HP software actually i uninstalled some of the bloatware using revo pro uinstaller and it went down from 90 processes to 60 processes.. it works great!!
So to all the new buyers don't just think you HAVE to do a clean install because you dont.. and its only a hassle ..
You can do the same in windows media player etc., right click when in "Now playing" mode and go to the graphic equalizer and set it to low on all the bars and max loud on the keyboard it should balance it out while producing a very large noise output..
So just playaround but the tweaks might be a different for each genre.. -

Hey, how come you get so many more readings--do you have the pro version of the tool or something? All I get is the CPU temp.
-
I just wanted to show my idle temps after ONE day of ownership. Just for those of you who're wondering. I havn't pushed it very hard yet, though. Just a bit of audiosurf to make sure the video card was working right.

Weird, everyones hwmonitors shows different items and readings lol.
-
How's this for weird. CPUID HWmonitor is reporting that my CPU is a Core i5 520m, and I know for a fact it's a 450M (and the app has reported that in the past as well).

Hello Everyone, after reading many of these reviews, I bought and received my dv6tse a few days ago and am loving it so far. I do have a few questions though (I am a novice computer user).
I saw around page 40 of this thread that someone had reconfigured their email hotkey to link directly to gmail by making a batch file and then converting it to a .exe file. I was wondering if anyone could provide a bit of a more detailed explanation/walkthrough as to how I can do this and have it link to gmail.
My second question refers to the SSD I purchased. I have been going through and uninstalling a lot of the unnecessary bloatware and i notice that my hard drive reports disc space going down, not up. I am assuming this has to do with the unique read/write nature of the SSD (I have read up a bit on this before purchasing it), and was wondering how to run TRIM manually on Windows 7 to permanently clear the empty blocks (Would this even help?) Thanks in advance! -
Could anyone that has just recently purchased their dv6tse or has not done anything to the services. Please post a picture of what services are running and which ones aren't. Just type services into the start box and sort the list by start type so it shows like automatic, delayed start, and such and just take a pic of the ones set to automatic and automatic(delayed start). I would very much appreciate this.

Phillyfan download Intel SSD Tool Box.

I'm most likely going to pull the trigger for this thing tomorrow. But I might just wait a while for a new coupon cycle. Have to buy this before the 27, though.

Can someone help me, I can't overclock the 5650. Their is no ati overdrive option in the Catylst Control Center. I've tried rivetuner, and a lot of other overclocking utilities but none them give me an option for overclocking. I've tried downloading the 10.6 catylst software suite but it tells that it isn't compatible with the graphics adapter. I've download the lastest drivers from hp as well but i still can't overclock. I'm have the i5 540, runs bfc2 great. The 5650 runs at at 65c max. If some could help me id really appreciate it.
-
Yours runs BFBC2 well and the gpu only gets to 65? wow. I might have to drop and buy the game if it's running that well. So far I have nothing to do on this laptop besides...well...be on here. Lol. but it does that pretty great

Here is my idle temp after 1 day.

by the way, does taking the battery off when plugged in significantly increase the battery's lasting time?
-
-
Hm, how much space does it take up on the drive? I'm gonna have to look for the cheapest deal for it now.
-
-
Oh that's not too bad then. I'm really liking the laptop so far, except the keyboard layout and button sizes have a slight learning curve, it's no big deal though.

How to Write a Batch File - wikiHow
to convert it to a .exe follow directions here:
How to make a bat executable?
At the moment i do not know how to map a keyboard key to a shortcut
you can technically just remove or rename the windows mail .exe i think its wlmail.exe and put the .exe you made but you're asking for trouble with windows so its best to not use that..
I have found the scancode for the mail button the code is:
57452
if you're good with registry and know how to tweak that to find the location to which its pointing please do let us know so we can do the same

Can someone explain to me the pro's and cons of a clean install vs. using an uninstall program such as Revo or PC Decrapifier?
For instance, if I do a clean install of Win7, will it take me forever to install any drivers lost during the installation? Is it that much more important to get rid of all the HP bloatware?
I mean, I'm just worried that when I get my laptop and do a clean install, eventually down the road I'll need some sort of software that was provided with my computer, but erased when I did the clean install of Win7.
Also, I asked before but I'm not sure if anybody was able to respond, I bought my laptop with an i7, and I'm reading that its running cooler than most laptops, which I like to hear, but that the battery life is terrible with the two extra cores and non-switchable graphics. Can anybody account for any major processing differences between the two? I just know I'm gonna feel like an if my battery life is terrible, and I'm not utilizing my i7 core to its fullest potential, instead of going with an i5 which wouldve done me just fine. -
Oh haha thanks
-
As for the bloatware its really really not a problem.. i disabled common HP things i didn't need like hp update which i wanted to run when i wanted it to run not automatically every day.. common things, however i left other important things on like wireless assistant, some have removed it and experienced problems, others however have not, i guess its level of expertise.. Bloatware unless its draining alot of cpu power, memory hog or you have a low-space SSD - generally doesn't need to be removed.. After disabling like 5 hp programs and uninstalling Norton security trial, in the task manager it shows a very basic comp, and i realized even if i did a clean install the amount of processes would be about the same.
Attached is a pic of my task manager after removing some stuff. I needed this laptop up and going so not worth the trouble unless you got time.
Regarding your processor question, generally stick with i5s unless you're rendering DVDs or some high end things, as the only main source of heat you have to worry is the hard drive, i have the i5 450m and its blazing through every day tasks like music playing in the background through pandora while i surf and have couple of windows open, and watching videos on youtube etc. THe hard drive is the only thing but its only warm not hot.Attached Files:

So, what are the dimensions of the laptop?
-
yep i think event ghost works, but i'm not sure if it remaps to another key or changes the location, i'm hestiant atm as i generally just open up the browser to go on email its weird tapping the button
-
Somebody has to know the length and width of this. I haven't handled laptops much, and I want to know how big the DV6tse is compaired to the Envy 14.
-
Though from what I gather, it can't replace the key's original function, since I want to remap the print button but I sadly can't. -
Just curious, while we're on the topic of key remapping is there a way to swap the function of the F 1-12 keys to their default function? I'm finding it annoying to have to hold down Fn+F5 and other combos just to use the F keys normally.

Hey everyone,
I just ordered the Dv6t Select Editon laptop last night, and it is expected to be built early August. I am getting it for college.
My specs:
Blu-ray ROM drive
i5 520M
HD5650 1GB
500 GB HD
6GB RAM
Touchscreen
Backlit keyboard
9 cell and 6 cell battery option
I have a few questions that I hope you guys can answer:
1. How is the touchscreen? Is it pressure sensitive like a Wacom tablet? I am going to be doing a lot of photo editing and drawing in college since my major is in graphic communication. Also is it stylus based or finger based?
I have a Wacom Bamboo tablet and it is good for drawing with Photoshop and Illustrator. It is pretty small though (I think it is less then 8 inches) and I still have some issues with drawing while looking at the screen instead of my tablet. I chose the touchscreen in hopes of being able to pressure sensitive draw on the screen.
2. I chose the 9 cell and 6 cell battery option. Does this mean that my laptop will have both of the batteries installed at the same time? What can I expect my battery life to be like?
3. How is the backlit keyboard? Can you change the colors at all? Honestly this was one of the reasons other then price why I chose this laptop over the Envy 14 one since they have similar specs.
4. How good is the screen in terms of brightness and color reproduction?
Thanks a lot for answering everyone! -
I don't have the laptop myself, but I'm sure you can't change the color of the backlight. It's not mentioned anywhere, even here, and there's not really any reason for there to be.
No offense, but these seem like questions you should have asked before ordering, especially considering the bold. It makes it seem as if you ultimately bought the laptop partially for a feature it doesn't even have. -
-
Cell you should be able to get 7 hours doing light application, use power saving mode and program called granola to
Save power!

MicGoogle:
Thanks for your reply! I think I'm going to just uninstall as much of the crap as I can. I was researching the clean install, while I think my computer skills are proficient enough to pull it off, I'd rather not have any problems with drivers or anything later on. Unfortunately I can't cancel and re-order with an i5 processor since I need this laptop to be ready for school. I'm just hoping any software the engineering department gives me at school will make use of my i7 :/ .
Does anybody know how many processes run in the task manager after the first start-up of the computer? And then how many processes after a clean install? I'm going to try my best to get them to match so I know my laptop is still performing to its fullest. Thanks again! -
Does anyones brightness adjustment keys work? whenever I hit mine it just pops up a window that says the program doesn't exist...
-
I get the feeling that HP wants to mess with me as much as possible. They decided to ship my laptop on a Friday night... So really 2 day shipping turns into 4 days. I hope I can wait! (And let's hope it works this time!)

Hi how many fans does this notebook have and does it get hot when you charge it?
-
-
its 15"X9.75"X1.25"
with the 9 cell battery its
15"X9.75"X~2.1"
its sturdy, and has lots of vents. Doesn't heat up, the hard drive is on the left palm rest and that can get warm, and when you do intensive tasks like video rendering without a nice cooling area or a AC on it can get hot, however for browsing and other light activities it should be fine. In the future if you upgrade to SSD this won't be a problem. This is what i plan to do
I am not sure how many fans this thing has, but it has lots of vents, and it does not get hot while charging.
To my fellow dv6se owners do you guys see a volume indicator bar or anything when changing volume? i have to hover over system tray volume icon. I was thinking of getting the skinnable volume software but i want to know if i disabled a processes thats responsible for this feature.. let me know. Also can one of you guys launch your 3D Hard Drive protection software and see if protection on your hard drive is enabled? When i launched mine it said the stock hp's hard drive which is the hitachi, wasn't supported..? -
Hey Frostedone,
I have my configuration very similar to yours and I am wondering if you bought yours with no coupon at all? If that's the case, how much did you have to pay? I think I was looking at 1200 without tax
