Synaptics drivers gets even more fun this time around.

After tweaking the trackpad driver to enable tap zones I lost deadzones completely and the ability to disable the trackpad.

Now after installing the newest Synaptics, it gave me back deadzones and now I can disable the trackpad. The biggest bonus, however, is that the tap zones still work but now there are no settings for them.

Synaptics, could I have everything back please?

Anyone who has the Touchscreen.....is it possible and/or does anyone make an 'anti-glare' shield/cover for the DV6tse.....(mostly interested for the anti-glare properties but also to 'protect' the screen).....Most importantly would it interfere or disable the 'functionality' of the Touchscreen? I so wish this had a matte screen but alas that has been designed 'out' of most current laptops...and the glare is something I could do without..... :)

    Thx!!!

I heard that you can use HP Wireless Assistant to disable it or disable it from tray/device manager

For the graphics updates, you don't necessarily have to uninstall first... That's why they're called 'updates'.

Did anyone else have problems installing the new graphics drivers? I tried to install them, but when it installed the driver the screen flickered and went blank. It's been like this for 5 minutes or so.... Not happy.

You can do a force restart or plug in either a vga or hdmi. Sometimes, it forgot who is the primary display and outputs on some random port.

It is highly recommended that you uninstall the old drivers first to reduce technical mishaps. Sometimes, updating directly have unintended results.

As for starcraft 2, I'm able to play high settings well, but i havent test on 3v3 or higher, still no AA and looks pretty jagged on most scenes. I think I should blame ATI for that problem

So, on a boring friday evening, I decided to do a clean install of my laptop that I've had for a couple weeks now. Everything went smoothly, but during the creation of the Win7 disk, I didn't delete the file that let me choose which OS I wanted. After a brief scare of screwing up my computer big time, I got everything fixed and working.

I downloaded all my drivers, and just for laughs I re-did my windows assessment score. I used to have a 6.2, 7.3, 6.7, 6.7, and a 5.9. Now, for my processor score I have a 7.1 instead of a 6.2, which I liked. However, my RAM score went from a 7.3, down to a 5.5. I have an i7-720 processor, and now I'm worried that since these scores got re-arranged and re-done I might've screwed something internally. Does anybody have any advice or 2 cents to put in? Thanks

EDIT: I found the problem! When I did the re-install of Windows, my OS is showing up as a 32 bit system now instead of the 64 bit it was before, can somebody please HELP me figure this out?

Here is a link to a screen guard which is also a matte finish to reduce glare. It says it is touch screen compatible and I am ordering one to see how well it works. Just to try I peeled off a plastic Aquafina wrapper and tried using the touchscreen with that as a barrier between my finger and the screen. It was still surprisingly responsive and I think the screen protector will work great. I also have read that the protector does wonders for glare reduction. So i'll review when it arrives.

PS. I tried using a sheet of printer paper as a barrier as well and it took away all touch response.... Aquafina bottlers should make screen protectors lol.

I made my discs that way...

I am trying to use the AMD OC tool and it says I need to run the program as administrator. My user profile is the Administrator profile and when I right click the program and go into advanced properties to select "Run as Administrator" it is greyed out as an option... So how do I really get full control as the admin?

Also I have tried RivaTuner and I can run the program but it has no options to OC my card.

    any help is useful.

I've been snooping around long enough and now I'm thinking of purchasing HP dv6t Select Edition. But I've had my fair share of defective units and faulty designs from HP laptops and I would like to know, before making another mistake, if dv6t Select Edition owners have experienced the following issues:

    1) Heat.
My last Envy 14 had scorching temps when running any programs.
How hot does it get when idling? How bad is it when running cpu/gpu intensive programs, like Adobe CS5, or games like Crysis, SC2: WoL, and GTA IV?
(bonus: dv6tse's 5650's core speed is at 550 MHz? Could someone confirm that? Envy 14's 5650 is stuck at 450 MHz and not many could overclock it.)

    2) Fans.
Both dm4t and Envy 14 had defective fans. Envy, especially had both fans running constantly and no way to turn it off. it was certainly audible and bothersome. How loud are the fans?

    3) Battery life.
My last dm4t had a battery life of 1.5 hours, when advertised at 7.0 hours.
I'm not looking for a miracle. I need something that would last back-to-back classes. Its supposed battery life: up to 5 hours. How long does it last, really?

    4) components. (for owners with the corresponding customizations)
-Battery: High capacity 6 cell battery last how much longer than stock 6 cell battery?
-CD/DVD drive: FREE blu-ray upgrade is no longer offered, I presume?
(Also, is it worth it to upgrade to Lightscribe?)
-Networking: $25 bluetooth upgrade worth it?
-Keyboard: $25 backlit keyboard & fingerprint reader upgrade worth my money?

I'm sorry for being so picky, but I honestly don't want to make the same mistake for the third time and regret over it. It is hard to understand unless you've had the lifetime of experience with a series of HP's defective units.
Please help me decide. I'm paying it for myself thus making it even harder to decide.

    considering components
    • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    • Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-450M Dual Core processor (2.40GHz, 3MB L3 Cache)with Turbo Boost up to 2.66 GHz
    • 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 switchable graphics [HDMI, VGA]
    • FREE Upgrade to 6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • FREE Upgrade to 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    • Microsoft(R) Office Starter 2010
    • No additional security software
    • High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (standard)
    • 15.6" diagonal High Definition LED HP Brightview Widescreen Display (1366x768)
    • No TouchScreen (includes HP TrueVision Webcam)
    • SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
    • Intel Wireless-N Card with Bluetooth
    • Backlit Keyboard with Fingerprint Reader
    $879.29

Lol i'm getting the exact same build except with the 9 cell battery.

1 - Idle temperatures with the i5 have been reported around 40-50 celcius. i know thats a big gap, but it has varied a lot for pretty much everyone. The i7 I THINK does around mid fifties idle. For games the temps have also been varied, but people are getting around 70-80 celcius. These temps of course are the processor temperatures, no the temps of the laptop's chassis.

2 - MicGoogle did a two-part review on youtube in which he stated that the fans hadn't turned on for him after hours of constant run-time. Heres the vid where he says that: YouTube - NEW! HP Pavilion DV6t SE Touchscreen Laptop Review Part 2

3 - Running an i5, on light usage like browsing the internet and watching an occasional youtube video, low brightness (like around 30%), on intel graphics, people have reported around 4-5 hours. On the 9 cell, people (sorry for the vagueness; I dont remember who said what, just that they said this stuff.) have gotten around 6-7 hours, and MicGoogle said in his review that he got up to 8 hours using granola, lowest brightness, etc.
    - On the i7, with similar settings as I said above, people have gotten 2-3 hours on the 6 cell, though IMO 3 hours is pushing it. So you should be able to get 4.5, maybe 5 hours with the 9 cell, depending on what you do.

4a - The high cap 6 cell is 62 WHr, versus the standard being 54 WHr, so the high cap would add around 15% battery life, which would be around 30-45 min.
b - Currently, the promotion is a free upgrade to 6 gb of RAM. However, HP does seem to alternate between the blu-ray and the 6 gb of RAM every time there is a new coupon code. The current one (NBH942688 - $100 off $1199+, not including the automatic $150 rebate) expires tomorrow, so the blu-ray drive might be free again when it does.
Lightscribe - I heard from someone on here that lightscribe was almost useless, though I don't remember why they said so.
c - I'm going for the bluetooth cuz I'd rather not have a dongle hanging off the edge of my laptop all the time. It pretty much depends on what your preference is.
d - IMO, the backlit keyboard is DEFINITELY worth it. Infact, I would go with the dv7tse cuz it has a larger, higher-resolution screen and allows for two hard drives. However, it doesn't have an option for a backlit keyboard, so I won't be going with that.

    Hope this helps!

P.S. - HP allows you to return your laptop within 21 days for a full refund, no questions asked

P.P.S - This is the most I've typed at one time since school ended! lol

Thanks Cazper37!!! That looks like the solution...let us know on your review what you think RE: Matte Screen Protector.... :D

On another note I hope this doesnt open up a bag of worms in a "Speed vs. Heat vs. longevity" battle RE: HDDs....just throwing this out there and seeing what everyones opinions are....going to pull the trigger on the DV6TSE and just looking for takes on this idea....

I know HP is offering the 'Free Upgrade' on the 500 gig 7200 rpm hard drive but "could you" or more importantly "WOULD YOU" forego (the FREE Upgrade to 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection [included]) and just get the (640GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection [add $51.00]) in an effort to correct the complaints on the forum of the HEAT ISSUES?? or is no one willing to sacrifice the speed difference between the 5400 vs. the 7200? the reason I ask is I came across this article:

The Truth About Hard Drive RPM (Rotations Per Minute) - Page 2 - Windows 7 Forums

on a Windows Seven Board/Blog regarding the 2 HDDs as it relates to "Speed vs. Longevity/LifeSpan vs. Performance/Heat"......They also talk about partitioning the HDD into sections for W7, Media, etc. to increase performance...anyone tried this??

    What would you do?

Things that make you go "Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm"! LOL

    Thanks Guys,
    :)

One wonders if the "Free Upgrade" is an effort to 'clear out' the 7200's???? but I digress...... :p Hep me......lol

    Wow...these two guys kill me:

    http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/253771-32-5400-7200

....this is the kind of argument I hope this doesnt stir up..it IS ENTERTAINING and INFORMATIVE reading tho...LOL!

It looks like it comes down to battery life v.s speed/performance/heat tho they may all be negligible.....

The Idle temps are low 40s on mine, while online (right now) im at 45 on one core 38 on the other core, and 45 on the GPU.

The GPU is clocked at 550/800 on the dv6t

the fan is on lightly but I cannot hear it without getting my ear close to the vent. While gaming it gets louder but still not to a dissapointing level at all. and it cools fast and slows down quickly.

Battery levels are really good, with a dimmed screen and light web browsing you can easily get more than 3 hours on the laptop. 4 hours sometimes and some have reported more (I havent tested this enough to know.) The high capacity battery gets about 30 more mins (not worth it in my mind) so I got the 9 cell battery which will get through your 5 hours of classtime with no problem.

The blu ray and 6gb have been alternating randomly so you can wait if you want. Also there is an additional $50 rebate right now (maybe ending today) but if you wait you basically get the same deal when you use a coupon not the $50 coupon though)

Bluetooth is nice if you plan on using wireless components or other bluetooth uses. (I got it, I may get a mouse that can use bluray and a usb cable.)

Backlit keyboard is nice, not essential, but add in the fingerprint reader, which will log in to the computer and any website you have to log in can save the password so everytime i come to nbr i just swipe my finger and im logged in! both these for $25 is more than worth it.

Every company has defects and as the largest distributor of consumer laptops hp is bound to have a large number of them. But the majority of their computers are not defective. And they have a good 21 day return policy.

Thank you all for your help. I have some technical questions left. Both dm4t and Envy 14 had these issues.
With the switchable graphics, whenever resuming from sleep/hibernation, upon right-clicking, or in some cases, automatically, the screen would blink for a second. Nothing major, right? But, brightness control keys (fn + f2/f3 for Envy) would not work after resuming from sleep/hibernation. When connected to power, the brightness control keys would work fine. But after resuming from sleep without power would hindered me from ever changing the brightness using the keys. So now, I ask you, fair owners of dv6tse, have you ever had these issues? It would be great to hear any thoughts on this since I'm really leaning toward buying this laptop.

Gohan, I bought win7 Pro, and successfully installed and ran Windows XP Mode it works good, so winxp as a boot os would be fine

MethodToTheMadness, open up HP Touchsmart click on Videos or maybe Movies I don't rem but they allow you to rent/download/buy movies straight to laptop! Yep movies should be HD as you buy them. Alternative service is called netflix.com very popular here in us

Uh, I don't know what's happening with other people but my i5 is going anywhere from 30-40 on idle/browsing/light stuff.

Though it does jump to 80+~ when I'm playing Battlefield Bad Company 2 mainly because its being stressed at 100% for hours.

The GPU has a lower range - low 40s and jumps to 70C~ maximum.

Likewise, BC2 stresses the GPU to 100%.

Bluetooth is worth it if you use bluetooth. It'd help take one port off USB if you had to use a bluetooth dongle.

Lol I forgot about Netflix. Thanks for reminding me. Do I need a subscription to rent/buy movies from them or can I rent/buy without one? I live in the US aswell, if that helps.

    You'll need a subscription.

Though from the looks of your post, you never set up an account with them? Then your first month is free with the One DVD free-trial offer. Regular, non-crippled (unlimited streaming) one DVD subscription starts at 8.99

They just recently released HD streaming which makes things even better. Best part about Netflix is the fact that it integrates perfectly with Windows Media Center since it has a built-in app. If you are using WMC with HDMI I recommend downloading Maxifier which will allow full-screen dual monitor use.

If you don't want to take the clean install route, just click the Windows Anytime Upgrade icon and input the serial of the Win 7 Pro you bought from your school. It will only take some 10-15 minutes to upgrade your Home to Pro and everything will still be there in your system.

If you want to go the long route, you can re-install Windows from scratch including the dv6tse drivers (links can be found in the forum)...

Oddly enough, with the original ATI drivers, I never experienced the issue that the new driver was supposed to fix (sleep resume). However, after I updated, and today resumed from sleep mode, it completely reset my visual scheme to as it was out of the box and even wouldn't let me re-enable Aero. I restarted and it changed back, but I'm not liking the new driver. Anyone else have this problem?

That depends on what you're using it for. Most people won't need 6GB of RAM or the 540M unless they're doing something very highly intensive or running VMs. If you're just doing basic stuff (or even gaming in most cases), 4GB and the 450M will be more than enough.

Yay! New coupon! And a good one at that! It's $250 off $1349 or more, NOT including the $150 instant rebate, which gives $400 total savings. The code is NBQ629135. Logicbuy.com doesn't say when the coupon expires.

Is this new $250 off coupon and $150 instant rebate about as good of a deal as it gets? I don't really care about the Blu-Ray player and wish that upgrade was on something else, but other than that $400 off seems good.

did 800 people already use that coupon? Because it fails for me saying it doesn't apply to the items in my cart. I used the same configuration it said to in the coupon.

I ordered at approximately 7:30 CST and the $250 off coupon worked with my order along with the $150 off instant rebate. I also got the free blu ray player upgrade.

To check for you, I just tried selecting the same thing at 9:10 CST. It would no longer let me use the coupon. I'm now pretty glad I ordered when I did.

I purchased my dv6t select edition a few weeks ago, and I absolutely love it. But, I'm wondering if my touchpad is placed incorrectly. =/

I visited Costco today and was playing on the dv6t select edition and the dm4t and the integrated buttons on both were quite easy to the touch. Mine are very stiff and it looks like the touchpad is slightly lifted up in the center. The front edge of the touchpad sticks up so that I can feel the edge if when I run my hands along the front. Is this just me?

I think so. I'm pretty sure there haven't been any coupons that give more than a total of $400 off with the instant rebate, and the bluray upgrade is worth $50 more than the RAM upgrade, so now is the best time to buy. Lol that sounded like a car salesman :p

Anyone know how to change the keyboard buttons on the left under the escape button (calculator, print, www, check, and email) so they run different programs if you wish?
