@6Leggedcow I just tried it and the coupon worked for me. Try it again and see if it works now. Make sure that the price without the instant rebate is $1349+

You can use EventGhost to do that. Not sure how, but many people on here have recommended it. Anyway, you can dowload it here: Download EventGhost. Make sure you get the most recent version.

Ya I was going to wait a little longer but I was scared the coupon wouldn't work later so I went with it

estepor 91: Ya the lojack deal was only $50 so I was like wth just in case and it'll last me all of college

hummer2023: Ya I think it is as good as it gets. My school offers a mbp 15 and a lenovo t410 as their high end products (Mbp is too expensive for me and lenovo just doesn't have the graphics) so ive been researching the last two weeks. I looked at Sony (F and EC series), HP (the Envy 14 would have been nice with a raidiance screen), Dell (XPS 16), Asus g73, Toshiba (A600) and an MSI I don't remember. Some of these of course had a couple of better qualities (this screen is average) but for the stuff I loaded this with + 4yrs hardware+ADH+lojack for 4 years all for $1500 (well technically I'll be getting some MS Office, W7 Professional, Virus Protection from school for another $150) was the best bargain I've seen yet on a computer that most people haven't had any major issues with

gu1t4r5tud: I got lucky, my university is in NH and they happen not to have sales taxes so I shipped it to them

Thanks for the coupon method man! Just ordered mine after ordering an envy 14 last week. This is 500-600$ cheaper. I really like the sound of the envy screen, but after thinking about it a lot more I will have this thing hooked up to a 22-24 inch screen much of the time anyways.

Hey I have a question for those of you who have recieved your laptop and gotten the touchscreen with it: how often do you find you use it? I'm on the fence about it. My current build costs 977 with tax and free shipping, but I can upgrade to 6gb of ram and the touchscreen to be able to use the coupon for a total of 1031 with tax etc.

I bought the other one before the free blu ray upgrade and the coupon. I'll finally be able to see my 50" plasma in all its glory.

I feel that use-wise it's not all that practical, but it is so very fun to be able to touch the screen when you want to and click on things. The edge to edge glass is beautiful though and HP Touchsmart programs are fun to use. I feel like it would be worth you to move up...but it's all your preference.

The buttons on my keyboard that are supposed to make the sound go up and down are not responding...mute works..everything else works but that. Anyone have any help or suggestions?

Thanks for the opinion. If I were to spend the extra $50 it would be for something practical, something that would really help out in the long run, and the touchscreen doesn't seem like a necessity. I also monitored my RAM usage on my desktop, which has 4gb, and I never got past half even with 5 tabs open, COD4 campaign running, and some other random programs.

Is this model at Costo the DV6T Select Edition? Seems like it is but it mentions it has a fingerprint reader but doesn't mention the backlit keyboard - can't you only get both or neither on the SE?

About to buy this laptop at a sweet price but had a few lingering questions.
1.would 6th of ram at 100 bucks be a good upgrade for light Internet and some sc2 at medium settings??

2.would I have to upgrade the video card to the 5650 to play sc2 at medium settings at default resolution or can I get by with the 5470?

3.lastly, what would these two upgrades do to battery life of the 9cell battery? Would it even be negligible?

The fingerprint reader comes standard on all SE's, backlit keyboard or not.

1 - For light internet and sc2 at medium settings, 4gb is more than enough.
2 - I'm not sure wether it would be a necessity, but it would definitely help with fps. Also, the graphics card would be a much better upgrade to get than the 6gb or RAM, because the RAM can be upgraded much more easily than the graphics card.
3 - The 5650, when on, would use more battery than the 5470, but you really shouldnt use the graphics card when unplugged anyway.

    1. I played on 4gb ram with SC2 on med (just because it's medium doesn't mean it's crappy looking, it's actually quite beautiful to look at) and it played fine on campaign. I used up my 7 hours playing storymode so I can't describe multi-player much but my only match went fine as well.

    2. A 5650 would be better equipped to handle SC2 which is what I played with (just because it's medium doesn't mean it's crappy looking, it's actually quite beautiful to look at) and it played fine on campaign. I used up my 7 hours playing storymode so I can't describe multi-player much but my only match went fine as well.

    3. You should have an integrated graphics card that you can automatically switch too if you're on battery to save power but of course that card won't be able to play SC2 on medium (i think). Again, you shouldn't be playing a game like SC2 on battery anyways since you're forced into the dedicated graphics to run it.

I dont know what to do if they are completely non-functional but I thought mine didnt work at first either. I found that they adjust the volume very lightly and 1-2 clicks is really not noticable. Try holding the volume button down for about 5 seconds and see if they are working.

Edit: Sorry I was gone all weekend but I ran benchmarks on my dv6t and will be updating the guide today/tonight.

Is the 6gb ram upgrade worth it for gaming, heavy internet use, and general future proofing? I've never upgraded ram myself before, but I've heard it's pretty easy. Is it still worth upgrading ram in the future if I get 2 dimm 4gb ram now (since there's no 1 dimm option, but usually people get 1 dimm if they plan to upgrade later)?

Basically I'm trying to decide if I should get the 6gb ram upgrade OR the 6 cell + 9 cell battery upgrade and bluetooth. I don't use bluetooth that much, but it might be nice to have and could be very convenient in the future. The extra battery life offered by the 9 cell and the flexibility to switch between the 6 cell and 9 cell seems very nice, though. The standard 6 cell gets about 4 hours of battery life, correct? How much battery life does the 9 cell get?

I guess I could also just get the battery upgrade and no the bluetooth, I'm just afraid I might really want it later. Then again, I can't really think of what I would need it for.

You don't need 6GB for what you want to do. The battery and bluetooth options are far better options for you. Just upgrade the ram later if you ever feel it's not enough.

One last question before I pull the trigger tonight. Would getting the SSD hard drive be worth an extra 70 bucks? I ask because if I upgrade to the SSD I can use the 250 dollar off coupon. Basically it'd cost me 70 bucks to get the SSD. Can I just get some comments on the quality of the two hard drives and would the SSD help me with battery life too? Any thought or comments would be appreciated.

Personally, through all my research, I've decided that yes it is worth it. I've read multiple places that getting an SSD is the most noticeable performance upgrade. The laptop is such a great deal with the SSD, it's amazing. I don't believe it helps much with battery life, but it's still worth it, from what I've read. I couldn't afford an SSD without a coupon like the $250 here, so I'm really glad I'm able to get it.

    Here's the setup I'm getting for $1005:

    * Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    * Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-450M Dual Core processor (2.40GHz, 3MB L3 Cache)with Turbo Boost up to 2.66 GHz
    * 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 switchable graphics [HDMI, VGA]
    * 4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    * 160GB (Solid State Drive Flash Module)
    * Microsoft(R) Office Starter 2010
    * No additional security software
    * 50% OFF! One 6 Cell (standard) and One 9 Cell (over-sized) Lithium Ion Battery
    * 15.6" diagonal High Definition LED HP Brightview Widescreen Display (1366x768)
    * No TouchScreen (includes HP TrueVision Webcam)
    * FREE Upgrade to Blu-ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
    * Intel Wireless-N Card with Bluetooth

This is my first post but I've been reading lots about the dm4t and the dv6tse and I finally chose this one. I ordered two of them, the only difference is one has 4gb ram + bluray and the other one 6 gb ram + dvd (my brother preferred 2 gb more than a blu ray drive).

    My specs:
HP Pavilion dv6t Select Edition customizable Notebook PC
    • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    • Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-450M Dual Core processor (2.40GHz, 3MB L3 Cache)with Turbo Boost up to 2.66 GHz
    • 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5470 switchable graphics [HDMI, VGA]
    • 4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • FREE Upgrade to 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    • Microsoft(R) Office Starter 2010
    • No additional security software
    • 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (standard)
    • 15.6" diagonal High Definition LED HP Brightview Widescreen Display (1366x768)
    • No TouchScreen (includes HP TrueVision Webcam)
    • FREE Upgrade to Blu-ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
    • Intel Wireless-N Card with Bluetooth
    • Backlit Keyboard with Fingerprint Reader
    • HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

    $849 each one.

    cheers.

I just realized I got the 512 mb graphics card instead of the 1gb graphics card. I'm not a gamer. Would I even notice a difference if I upgraded to the 1gb graphics? I'm on the i5 450 processor.

I think when I was reading I thought you couldn't do switching on the 1gb graphics card when I ordered. I wanted to be able to switch on and off to save battery. I just didn't realize that the 1gb can still switch on the i5.

Hey guys. Could anyone tell me what type of Bluetooth the integrated one is? Like is it 2.1 with EDR? I found a 2.1 + EDR micro dongle on amazon and I be will purchasing that if the integrated is not the same type. I have bluetooth headphones that I use with my itouch, and i want to get the same sound quality with them on my laptop.

Well the touchscreen is capacitive like an itouch/iPhone screen, so you would need a capacitive stylus. Here's one that amazon sells that got 4.5ish/5 stars with 27 reviews: Amazon.com: BoxWave Capacitive iPad Stylus (Jet Black):…

I think the hdmi port is one way only and the other way to do it would be to get a tv tuner and hook that up to your laptop and plug your ps3 into that, but you'll see a lot of input delay. Why not just get a computer monitor with hdmi input or something? I'm currently using my samsung desktop monitor for everything. It's pretty great.

Ok so it's 2:09 in the morning right now and I'm so ridiculously excited to get this laptop that I can't even keep my eyes closed lol :D. Anyway, I will be getting the ssd with my laptop and would like to know about recovery stuff.
1 - Since I'm getting the ssd, do the recovery discs automatically come with the laptop?
2 - If they don't, can I make my recovery discs and then delete the recovery partition to free up more space?
3 - If I can delete the partition, how would I go about doing that?

    Thanks in advance!

No, the HDMI is output only.

You would need a separate monitor in order to get HDMI out from your PS3.

Ok so I'm biting the bullet and deciding to buy this laptop. I just made a solid build for what I need. And with the new coupon, I am under $1000 for what is essentially a $1400 laptop at retail stores.

My question is, I can go even lower if I ditch the gb ram I chose. If I choose 4 gb, will it affect gaming much? I don't plan too much media intensive stuff either. Also, what type of ram is it just in case I wish to upgrade in the future? Right now, HP charges $100 more to go from 4 gb to 6 gb. Is this how much RAM will cost in real life? If someone can tell me what type of memory is used, I can check from newegg, ncix, amazon to see how cheap it is.

I went for the 540m processor, free blu-ray ( I have a HUGE collection), 5650 graphics, no touchscreen (no need for it), I did go for both the 6 cell and 9 cell. Batteries are expensive and while I will most likely use the 9 cell more, it cannot hurt to have a cheap 6 cell with me or even use it for it's low profile.

If I keep the ram at 4gb, I get the computer for 899.99 with like $76 tax. I'm just dying to play SC 2 on this. I get like 28-36 FPS on SC2 now on everything low at 1024 x 768 on my 2007 toshiba laptop with integrated graphics.

Didn't know that. On the HP site, when you get to the keyboard option it says

Standard Keyboard - Included in price
Backlit Keyboard with Fingerprint Reader - +$25.00

Seemed like the fingerprint reader was part of the backlit keyboard upgrade.

Now, on the SE models at Costco, does anyone know if they ship with a backlit keyboard or bluetooth? Doesn't say so on the site, but who knows if their specs are accurate.

I just got my dv6t se yesterday with the touch screen. I absolutely love it. I sometimes end up using the touchscreen over the touchpad just because it is more fun. It leaves a lot of fingerprints though. I ended up reformatting the PC though to get rid of the crapware that comes preinstalled and to upgrade to a better version of windows that I already owned....finding drivers wasn't fun.

Also, mine isn't really edge to edge glass, its coated in something and the line between the screen and the rest of the chassis is clearly visible (but still covered).

I believe it is DDR3 SDRAM. No 6GB kits exist (3GB sticks of ram are to odd a size to make usually), so you would have to buy a 4GB stick of ram to go with your 2GB stick which does cost somewhere between $95 and $110. When I was buying mine I also checked to go from 6 to 8GB, and with HPs pricing it didn't make sense to do it myself (I ended up going with 6 though...even my desktop doesn't have more than that)

I just recieved mine yesterday and after making recovery disks last night I'm ready to do a clean install. I just have a few questions.

I have windows enterprise which I plan on installing since I just got the home edition with this comp. I can get ultimate or pro if you guys recommend those instead. I assume if I just follow the clean install instructions this should be pretty basic.

However I did pay for the Norton 3 year antivirus (I had to bump up my price just enough to be eligible for the coupon) and I'm wondering how I activate this and if I will lose this if I do a clean install.

I also have the same question as Norton but in respect to the Lo-Jack I paid for.

    Thanks

Anyone have an opinion if the graphics card update from 512 mb to 1gb matters if you don't intend on playing games? Will it help with photoshop?

Before I sent the Envy 14 back, the wife ran a handful of speed tests on Adobe Elements using the integrated graphics & the dedicated graphics card. No real difference at all.

Aren't all the drivers located in the c:\SwSetup? I just backed that up to my usb drive and I was gonna reinstall everything from there. If that's not everything I guess I better download the rest of the drivers off hp's support site.

I redownloaded (what I thought) was everything from the HP website but things were missing such as the Keyboard Shortcut configuration program (still have yet to find it), drivers under categories not marked drivers (PCI simple communications controller is some intel drive thing) and the Digital Persona fingerprint reader software (installing the drivers is useless without the software, can be found with another laptop, any version will work, just update after you install)

EDIT: I was also having issues getting Turbo Boost/speed step to install correctly as well as the HP webcam software if anyone wants to lend a hand.

I'd be tempted to return/reorder with the latest coupon if this laptop didn't come to me in perfect shape. Believe it or not guys, HP is capable of delivering an all-around quality product!

Very much so. When mine arrived yesterday, the panel covering the HDD and memory wasn't seated correctly. Simple fix though, so I didn't worry about it too much. Temps are hovering in the high 60s though, I'm going to test it with some gaming tonight to see how the temps hold. If they get too hot, I'm calling HP, especially since there is no way to control fan speed whatsoever.

Anyone know of any custom BIOS images yet? I'd like to try some custom clocks...

You don't need 6GB at all. Going with 4GB won't affect gaming at all, since you'll rarely even use 3GB even if you're playing a game and you have other apps running.

In fact, you don't really need the 540M either. For your uses, the 450M, 520M, and 540M show little to no noticeable difference in performance.

1- If you only order recovery disks they dont automatically come with ssd. However you can make them on your own.

    2-yes
3- delete ssd partition through disk manager or any partition software should work like this one Easeus Partition Master Home Edition - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

Are you sure that the HD 5650 is the active GPU when you try to play?

Are you sure you're not playing with the Intel HD graphics enabled? If it's crashing, are you playing with your laptop on a soft surface (bed, carpet, etc.)?
