I've read (somewhere in this thread) that the temps are hot at first, but cool down after some amount of time. I forget how long it is though, somewhere from a few days to a week I think.

The other ones beat me to it but I'm having no trouble with this game on medium in acatama desert. l4d2 also gets 50-60 (limits @ 60fps). so make sure that you are using the 5650.

If you're going to be doing a lot of gaming, I'd get a laptop cooler. I think I might get one too as gaming makes the temps shoot to 83ish C

You correct. If I remember correctly, this is because over the first few days, the thermal pad on the cpu (and gpu I think) melts and thus becomes more effective with cooling. Not sure though.

Its not that the thermal paste melts (assuming they use any. Melting would be bad, its conductive usually), its that the silver/ceramic molecules eventually realign themselves to conduct heat better. And no, I'm not making that up.

I can't help. Sorry :( But I would love to know where you got the driver for ps3 controllers. I find that they are much more sensitive and much nicer to play with than 360 controllers.

    @ Cocolo

I don't have the laptop, but the 5650 should be automatically selected while plugged in, while on battery the integrated graphics are used. I believe if you choose the "max performance" setting or something while on battery, that will use the 5650, but it may be downclocked. I'm not sure on this part since I don't have the laptop, but I think I remember this from somewhere in this thread.

So do the HP Recovery Disks have exactly what's in the RECOVERY partition?
If so, what's the point of keeping the recovery partition, just convenience?

Yeah, just about. I made the recovery disks but kept the recovery partition as-is - I'd rather have both backups. My C: partition is between a quarter and half full, so I'm not worried about freeing every last byte of space yet.

And to the people asking about temperature - I never got that monitoring program everyone else seems to have, but just by touch, my laptop is cooler today than when I first turned it on (two weeks and a day ago).

Are you plugged in to the AC when playing? If not, that's the problem. If so, see if the drivers are up to date, and update them if they aren't. And again, only play on a hard, flat surface.

I haven't read this question asked before
What's the HP_TOOLS partition, and is it something I should leave put?
The folders inside are BIOS, BIOSUpdate, and System Diags, which sound important

And I think I might've asked this before, but is there any difference between the HP Recovery Discs from HP and recovery discs that you make? Like if you make your own, is it more personalized for your own computer?

From what I have seen, it is better to keep that, though I am not sure if it is necessary. It is only 100 megs or so, so you aren't losing too much space.

Hey folks - I'm > < close to pulling the trigger and picking a dv6tSE up for myself. But I'm vacillating between the i5 and the i7 processor.

I'm usually doing some processor-heavy tasks, like rendering and video editing, as well as the occasional graphic heavy game, but I do travel a bit, and I enjoy being able to watch a DVD or do some writing while I'm on the plane.

I'm not expecting the darned thing to last for a day off the plug, even with an extended battery and light use. But I'm just curious - what is the power drain difference between the two processors when on battery power, when either on the normal battery or the extended battery? I already know that people have been seeing around the 5-6 hour mark on battery power with the i5 with light usage, but how bad is the power usage on the i7 when on battery?

    Thanks beforehand, all.

Hi guys, I'm about to buy a dv6t SE but I have a couple of questions and I need answers from owners :). I'm aware that this questions have been asked previously, but I don't have time to read all the 250+ pages :( sorry... So:

    1. How hot is this laptop with the i5 450m and the ATI 5650? Will I need a laptop cooler for it when not playing games?
    2. Does the touchscreen in anyway affect performances and battery life? If so, can I just disable it as it doesn't exist so I could get the performances of the same laptop without this feature?
    3. Is the difference between the 5650 and the 5470 big?
    4. What brand is the SSD? How good is it compared to other SSDs?
    5. What about the battery life with the 6-cell standard battery (the first option)?

Thanks in advance to everyone answering my questions...

    1. With my particular config, I'm hitting 30-40C idle/browsing and maxing it out by playing Bad Company 2 hits 90C CPU and 70C GPU. Your temps will vary as plenty of users here report much higher temps. You should grab a laptop cooler (I have the Notepal U2) anyway since it tilts the laptop for comfortable typing and allows it to be used on your lap without warming up your legs.

Might look alarming but it isn't really, 105C is the max temp threshold for the CPU and Bad Company stresses both CPU/GPU at 100%.

    2. N/A

    3. Considerably. 5650 is more middle of the road and 5470 is for lower peformance. For comparison charts: Notebookcheck: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650

5470 is actually one class down.

    4. N/A

    5.
    6 Cell = 54 wHr
    6 Cell+ = 62 wHr

Depending on what you're doing it'll add on average around an additional 30 minutes. It might go up to an hour if you're not running anything but Word or something.

    2. It's not software based it's the material it's capactive and windows has option for touch input so it's essentially not using any additional power or affecting performance. You can disable it from Control Panel

    4. Intel for 160gb and Samsung for the other. Intel is industry standard for reliability but Crucial realssd is the best at the moment for performance.

hey guys, I have a noob question. Will the battery life on the i5 450M be the same as the battery life on the i5 540M given the same usage? Basically I just want to find out if the 540m will last as long as the 450m.

OMG!! !! i just got a dv6 3030tx and first thing i did was to update the ATI drivers from HP and test sc2! all ran super on medium, fine. So I formatted it to get rid of all the bloatware and to setup partitions... after that i installed all the drivers from HP, chipset, video, ati, wireless and so on.. and now!!! freakin hell! sc2 runs like CRAP with the same settings as if the ATI card is not used right. Texture settings changes fps a lot which means its 100% the graphics card / cards... ? How hard is it to make something that works?

Anyone heard of, tried or know of a fix, update something to make this do as intended?

Go to ATI's site and download the drivers for the graphics card then uninstall the older HP ones and install the ones you just downloaded and restart.

When I reformatted, the HP drivers were like 7.10 and the current ones were 10.04 or something.

OH. MY. F**KING. GOD. HP decided that it would be a GREAT idea to make the base graphics the integrated one, and charge $150 for the upgrade to the 5650, rather than the $75 I can afford. God it was freaking perfect. HP will be getting a call from an extremely pissed off customer. Im going to try to get them to give $75 off my order WITH the coupon, cuz then I will be able to afford it. Wish me luck.

    It has the switchable graphics?

by the way, Looking back at your previous post, are you sure this this the right thread?

EDIT: If it is switchable, are you sure that you are using the ATI card vs the intel HD graphics chip?

EDIT2: From earlier in the thread

You shouldn't be downloading from ATIs site as it will cause problems with switchable graphics. If you have discrete graphics (i7 processor) use ATI site..

Get updated driver from justinw the mod's dv6 driver thread Thomas

Thomas right click desktop hit "Configure switchable graphics" and change to ATI card..

Nathan actually quoted me when I upgraded my ATI Graphics drivers. I was the one who posted that instruction. I downloaded the driver directly from ATI and everything works fine including switching between graphics.....

So i just got my new Dv6tSE yesterday, and after plugging it in, to uninstall all the crap (did minimal image recovery) and did some tweaks from the HP out of the box guide. I charged 9-cell battery for roughly 7 hours, then I installed battery bar. I was simply doing light browsing, and my discharge rate on the battery is hovering around - 20000 mW. This seems a little bit high.

Do you guys have any tips on how to decrease this number considerably. Also when I tried to install Granola to optimize battery life, it said DVFS is not enabled, which is basically intel speedstep. I looked at the bios to find no option similar to intel speedstep.

Feel free to give me any comments or help.

    Thanks

The updated drivers from ATI, didn't work well on my dv6t i5, I have a +30C idle GPU spike. </br>
Manual switch causes my CCC to crash often, but automatic works fine.
HDMI output has incorrect video output and audio stutter.

Using the HP drivers, got rid of it, but at least it is at 10.6.

Those with switchable shouldn't be blindly treat it like they do with their old dedicated graphics.
And need to step back a bit, if you want stability and reliability.
Unless, you are experimental, Go for it :D, for the good of mankind.

Well it worked! i was able to get a $50 discount, ON TOP of the coupon, ON TOP of the instant rebate! Here's the build I ordered:
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-450M Dual Core processor (2.40GHz, 3MB L3 Cache)with Turbo Boost up to 2.66 GHz
1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 switchable graphics [HDMI, VGA]
FREE Upgrade to 6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
160GB (Solid State Drive Flash Module)
    Microsoft(R) Office Starter 2010
    No additional security software
50% OFF! One 6 Cell (standard) and One 9 Cell (over-sized) Lithium Ion Battery
15.6" diagonal High Definition LED HP Brightview Widescreen Display (1366x768)
No TouchScreen (includes HP TrueVision Webcam)
SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
    Intel Wireless-N Card with Bluetooth
    Backlit Keyboard with Fingerprint Reader
HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope
    HP Wireless Comfort Mobile Mouse

The total, with tax and free shipping, would have come to $1188.41, however I was able to get a $50 discount, so it ended up at $1138.41

Oh and estimated build date: August 27th. HP normally over estimates to give themselves room right? My birthday is September 1st, which is a wednesday this year. If it's built on, say the 25th, that would give them 5 buisness days, including my birthday, to ship it to me. That would be awesome!

Oh btw, when I asked the guy for a discount, I ddin't make up that I'm student and I need the better graphics card or something else. i only said that the laptop will be for home entertainment but will need to be high performance. Also, we bought a desktop from HP at the beginning of this year. I'm saying this because he asked if I had bought anything from HP before.

EDIT: whats even nicer about this build is if I find that I need more than 160 gb of storage space, I can just do that system image thing someone mentioned on here, sell the ssd, buy an hdd, load the image onto the new hard drive, and pocket the change. I think. Lol w/e. I probably won't fill the ssd anytime soon.

Is there a problem with my cpu, the i5-450m; I think i know why the discharge rate on my dv6tse is high. When i ran cpuid- cpuz to check the core speed of my cpu, it was regularly at 2.6 ghz, indicating that turboboost is active even during idling on my computer. Also granola states that DVFS (basically the allowance of changing cpu speeds dynamically based on need).

    Anyone have any suggestions.

Anyone currently running two of these DV6tse's side by side with the same core specs (i5-450)but one having the 160 gig SSD and the other the 500 gig 7200 HDD? I ordered one spec'd with the 500 gig 7200 and am wondering how significant the difference is in speeds/heat/boot time/battery consumption between the two are....I am seriously thinking of ordering another spec'd with the 160 SSD and comparing the two...

    Thnx...

Umm 800 is more than the highest vertical resolution that this laptop can do, so I dont think u can run it on the laptop's screen. You could get an external monitor that has this resolution or higher with the same aspect ratio of 16:10
