Hey guys, I've had my new dv6 all week now and I LOVE it! Touchscreen is sooo much fun and the e2e glass is great! The back lit keyboard also has been something that I find very useful and good looking. This thing is blazing fast and is ripping through anything I throw at it. Its playing all my older games in Ultra and they look great. I just have nothing bad to say about this computer.
-
So what are people getting as far as battery life? And how portable are the machines? A guy at work has last years DV6 with a i7 its a tank, but when I looked up the specs its a full pound heavier + a little bigger.
I actually have 2 DV6TSEs on order to replace the DM4s, which replaced the Envy 14s. Eventually I'll find machines the wife and myself are happy with. -
Guys, I'm having some serious startup problems;
I had installed 10.6 drivers for my video card and thought it solved the problem, but this morning I turned my computer on - the white screen started up again (all white) then it fades to black. At the end of the "startup", on the screen are just vertical white stripes with a couple of other colors through them, almost as if my monitor/connection is broken.
I restarted the computer about a dozen times before it started up and gave me "Windows Startup Repair" which I tried running. After, it simply said it couldn't solve the problem and restarted the computer automatically, at which point the white screen was back and after three dozen restarts, has yet to startup normally.
I've tried unplugging the computer, running on just battery, running on just external power, even putting in both my Windows 7 and my HP Recovery discs and the problem is the computer can't boot up at all - the discs don't kick in. I've tried to access the boot manager by pressing F2 and F8 (for safe mode) but those don't work either. I'm at a complete loss here and I'm wondering if it might be a hardware problem - but this has happened before and eventually the computer just "started" correctly. I have the 2 year service plan but I'd really prefer not to lose my computer for the next month. Any suggestions? -
Somehow I was able to start up my computer normally...I'm thinking of flashing my BIOS to upgrade it but I don't really know how, and I'm going to uninstall my ATI Drivers and just uninstall the stock HP ones for now...anyone have any ideas what's going on here?
-
Ahhh...back down to 8.692.1.0 but no problems. Does no one else at all get any problems when running updated video drivers?
-
I just closed my laptop to take it downstairs, and when I opened it the fingerprint scanner wouldnt work. It was working earlier when I had turned it on. Anyone have any ideas how I fix this?
-
Are the drivers installed properly? You could try restarting the computer and trying it again...
As for updates on my situation, turns out I think it's a hardware problem (downgraded by uninstalling ATI drivers altogether, still have the same problem). Not to flood the topic with my whining, so maybe some useful information for anyone who will have to return their notebook (hopefully no one else here):
Under manufactures warranty, it's 2-3 business days to receive the box, 7-9 days for them to fix it, and 2-3 days for them to return it to you. At best, that's 11 business days (about 2 weeks) for your computer to be fixed, but at worst that's 15 business days (about 3 weeks), which is atrocious. If anyone was like me and bought extended care packages (I got the 2 year pickup and return), the time is cut down to 1-2, 4-6, 1-2, which at best is only about a week and at worst is about two - this is free, otherwise you'd have to pay $15 for upgrading shipping.
So that's all I have to say, I can access bios when my notebook is messed up like this but it turns into 4 giant vertical rectangles of white, gray and black (even though it makes the beep noise...) and then I have to restart. I think there might be a faulty screen connection or something and I was just unlucky. I'll get back to you guys in a couple weeks when I hopefully have my fully functioning laptop back... -
Can any1 recommend me a notebook cooler? I'm thinking about the zalman 2000 or the nzxt cryso s15?
-
Like I had said though, the full $75 increase in cost from the GPU really is only $25, because the cost of the laptop also dropped by $50. For three days the drop in base price and the regular $75 GPU upgrade was avaliable and they realized they were selling the laptop at too low a cost and made the change in the GPU pricing. It was a very short term and rare occurance just like 30% Bing cashback. I calculated it out and in the end, there is a $15 difference from the standard deal with the $250 coupon at the beginning of the month and now. However if you want blu-ray, it will be a larger difference so you should wait for that to be the free upgrade, most likely at the beginning of september. Hopefully they have an overlap of a deal and you can get even better savings than I did.
Yeah I am an ethusiastic owner
But I'm not going to easily forget the weeks of questions and concerns trying to get the best price on this laptop. So feel free to express your concerns and I will respond honestly.

Depending on what modfe you have your computer go in when you close the lid may be the issue... if your computer wasnt fully asleep the fingerprint reader will shut off after about 20-30 seconds. To turn it back on you have to put the computer to sleep or turn it off then bring back on the login screen.
Check out the guide in my sig for battery info.
Summary:
6-cell: 3-5 hours light use/web
6-cell hi-cap: 3.5-5.5 hrs light use/web
9-cell:5-7hrs light use/web -
The base price was $799 for at least a week and a half, maybe over two weeks. I started looking at this laptop at the very beginning of August. I can't remember if when I first started looking the price was $849 or $799, but I know when I started looking more into it (around August 6), it was definitely $799.
Then again, most of that time, there was only a $100 coupon, so maybe when they went to a $250 coupon they decided they needed to raise the price. -
Yup, I don't think the price of the laptop has dropped by $50, it has been $799.99 as far back as I can remember, so its actually an increase of $75 by my calculations. I had it configured in my cart over the weekend and I had the price, but when I checked back during the week the price has definitely been raised by more than $25 for my config. But its my own fault for not making a decision and sticking to it.

Just a quick tip for the owners of the dv6t, if your having heating issues and its been about 2-3 weeks or more since you received your dv6t you might want to clear the air vents. While they recommend using a air duster which cost around 5-12$ per can depending on size I use my electric blower. Yea its like a gas blower but its a black n decker 18 volt its pretty powerful much more than the compressed can and lest costly. So what I do is just prop it on something so that both the exit and intake vents are free and clear of all obstacles then stick a tooth pick between the bars of the intake vent so the fan blade wont spin. And then turn on the blower and point it about 1-2 inches front the exit vent hold it for about 30 secs, then do the intake vent.
-
were you able to get all the leaves out of your laptop with the blower?

$1079.99 before tax, $1201.29 after tax. I figure I can call them later and try to get that $75 back, and threaten to cancel my order or something if they don't give it to me. Estimated ship date is August 31, so hopefully it gets shipped sooner.
Thanks for all the help along the way, guys. -
How did you get the extra HPA coupon? I know you probably called, but what number and what did you tell them?
-
It was sent to me from HP via e-mail.
Actually, I was supposed to have been sent to me on August 5th, but they forgot to put the code in the e-mail. Out of pure luck and coincidence, they corrected the mistake and sent the code the day before I got the last bit of money I needed to buy it!
It's just amazing!
-
How many of you have called HP and complained to get the $100 dollars of your order? I'm not sure how to do it, I've called HP and complained about the battery life on my i7, spent 2 and a half hours on the phone with them, because I got disconnected the first time from them, and then I had to start speaking with somebody new (first guy was named Mike, second was Francis), and then I got disconnected again, and both times they were going to connect me to sales after I said I was just going to return my laptop and try ordering a new one. I kept asking if there was anything HP could do for me, but is there some magical phrase I'm missing? Thanks!

MethodtotheMadness Notebook Evangelist
From what you've said, it seems like you already have your laptop. Is that correct? Anyway, I called, said that I wouldn't be able to afford the price jump of the 5650, asked if there was a coupon he could add to my build to bring the price down, and he added one for $50. Easy as that. One thing that may help: I ended up ordering over the phone with that guy.
Oh btw, when he offered the $50 coupon, I asked if there was a $25 coupon he could add to that to bring the price to where it would be originally, and he said he couldn't give more than $300 off of the laptop. And that $300 of course does not include the instant rebate. -
Would you be able to email us the code, so we can try and obtain the same discount when we haggle with the reps?
-
I'm pretty sure it's a single-use code customized for an individual user (in this case, me), and even if it isn't it's a 2-day coupon and should already be expired by now, this being the third day.
-
That's fine. They should still be able to honor it, if I say something like "My friend received this coupon code from HPA, but I didn't get one. Could you still honor it?"
EDIT: Called HPA and they said they'd honor it, but they need the code. -
Yes, I've all ready had my laptop for a couple weeks now. I guess they really can't do anything then? -
Can someone post the latest coupon code for the DV6TSE here? Got a friend who wants to buy one and looking to send it his way.
Also - does anyone happen to know if there are similar codes for the DV7TSE?
thanks all! -
damn a lot of you are getting the dv6tse with Intel i5 for the price I got it with the i7.
is my battery life really going to be that bad with the i7? -
MethodtotheMadness Notebook Evangelist
Not as far as I know. Sorry
-
Yes, but if you really want, buy an extra 9 cell battery which is what I wound up doing. I don't need the super-portability battery life of the i5 so I kept my i7 since I could definitely use the power for CAD programs. Currently, there is a $45 dollar instant rebate on the 9 cell battery, coupled with the student discount (assuming you have an hpa account), and an added coupon, I got the extra battery for $65 dollars, which is nearly half the regular price. -
Hello all,
am debating between dv6t se v. dv7t se, mainly for the battery life v. dual hard drive configuration.
I looked at the manual, and it seems to suggest that only one memory RAM module is upgradable? Is this true? If so, if I get the free upgrade to 6GB, which is the upgradeable one - the 2 or the 4gb?
On a side note, do you guys think that waiting for the free blu-ray upgrade to happen again..., or just getting a better CPU is the better way to go? I read a lot of the posts here, (but not all) and i'm sorry if this has been addressed already. My current laptop - the DVD laser burned out, so now it only reads/writes CD...., so I'm kind of assuming that optical drives, (perhaps especially the slim internal laptop ones) don't last super long, and I am assuming that bluray drives, even writable ones, will drop in price in the future.
thoughts are welcome, thanks. -
my next dv6t got shipped today....
the excitement has worn off -
So you were actually able to get another $50 off on top of the $250 coupon and the $150 instant rebate correct?
-
Don't know if it is just me, but the $250 coupon is showing up as invalid. Can anyone else confirm this?
EDIT: Just called and confirmed, the $250 off coupon has reached its limit. -
MethodtotheMadness Notebook Evangelist
Yup. That's correct. -
I wish I could have tried that, but the $250 coupon has expired. I guess I am back on the waiting game. We'll see what kind of coupon HP comes out with. Correct me if I am wrong, but these coupons seem to be released as soon as the old one reaches its limit or expires, right?
-
MethodtotheMadness Notebook Evangelist
Yea I just tried it and it didn't work. It's good timing though, cuz it would have expired tomorrow anyway. And since it would have expired tomorrow, there should be a new one out tomorrow. I'm looking forward to seeing what it is. -
Yeah, that is true. I don't want to get my hopes up though, seeing how HP just downgraded the base configuration yet kept the same price. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised to see a crappy coupon tomorrow.
-
MethodtotheMadness Notebook Evangelist
Well let's hope for the best! -
If I uninstall 'HP QuickWeb Installer' with Revo, does that just remove the installer or the whole program?
Also, what are the following programs, and can they be safely uninstalled without possible future regret?
HP DVB-T TV Tuner 8.0.64.43
HP ENVY Document Card Utilities
Also, how do I get rid of HP Wireless Assistant and HP's volume control program? -
i was going to order mine with this coupon this morning and the coupon was working fine, then i changed some specs of te laptop and i entered the coupon and it was invalid
.
So i called hp and told them that i was not getting the laptop without the coupon becouse i didn't have the money so they give me the $250 discount.
Hope it works for someone some time.
Agian, sorry for my english
-
MethodtotheMadness Notebook Evangelist
Dude your English is near perfect. Better than many people who's primary language is english lol. What is your primary language?
(Sorry that this is off topic guys. Just curiouse
)
-
Spanish. I'm from Venezuela, and i'm spending my vacations in my aunt's house (Houston, Texas).
Btw this laptop it's just perfect for me. I'm cheking the order status like every five minutes lol xD -
got information from service.. netx week i get new motherboard (graphics issue) cant wait
-
MethodtotheMadness Notebook Evangelist
Cool
Haha same for the order status. I dont think it will change for a while, but still
-
MethodtotheMadness Notebook Evangelist
Wow wth? So the expiration date for the coupon is actually the 24th, according to Logicbuy. Sorry guys :/
-
Each time I sleep my system, the fingerprint scanner won't work. It works just fine when I start the system after it being off though. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? It only recently started happening.
-
Hello,
I was hoping you guys would graciously willing to answer some questions that I had? And they're easy.
I read the manual that is available online, (p.57 http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02437425.pdf ) or (p. 73 http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02162059.pdf ) and it seems to me, from the diagram, that only one of the RAM is user-replaceable? Is this true? Or are the RAMs just kind of stacked on top of one another instead of being side-by-side? If this is so, for those who have the 6GB RAM, is it the 4 or the 2GB that is user-replaceable?
I ask because I am defininitely planning on getting this computer the next time there is a coupon, and I might have to choose between upgrading RAM v. blue ray v. CPU to just barely hit the minimum price requirement for the coupon.
And this question isn't exactly applicable to this thread, but it seems like there are a lot of knowledgeable people here --- I'm kind of on the fence about the SSD, and think I'll probably upgrade later when prices drop and maybe better drives come out. My question is, can you reinstall the OEM Windows onto the new drive, from the backup discs that you make? I just ask because i remember reading a long time ago that a computer isn't considered to be the same computer, (therefore OEM windows is not legitimate) if certain number of parts of the computer are changed?
Thank you in advance, I've read everything in this thread except pages 170-200, and the whole "when is your computer coming, is it in China, Alaska, etc" was funny. -
I have the 6GB and both memory modules can be removed; they're just oriented in a slanted position. I wouldn't count on a single 4GB module getting cheap anytime soon though (but I don't pay attention to the memory market so I dunno).
There is software that can copy the entire system to a new HDD, but I forget the name. I know it was mentioned somewhere in the latter half of this thread though.
Also, hey shipping is serious business.
-
falkhag, laptop ram is much much smaller than regular desktop ram, so i would say this would have to be case where its stacked, and HP advertises their openable bottom latch to get access to modifying HD, etc., so i would hope they would ram modifications in mind as well. If comes to it, get RAM over blu-ray or cpu as turbo boost now-adays brings any low i5 to decend 2.90 clock speeds
Regarding transfer OEM Windows its very simple first try this method listed here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...-hp-laptop-out-box-guide-2-0-windows-7-a.html
It should work its like a clean install and saves your HP license of Windows. However if you want to try to transfer data with OEM key you should follow Intel's steps to transfer data to SSD, they list it in their faq for ssd which should be applicable for any hdd to ssd transfers. To save you time the software is called Apricon EZ Upgrade
