    Well, last night I did have it on all day, had been playing games, as well as doing some DVD encoding/burning, as well as downloading. I was definitely using the system, but it wasn't until I started gaming that it really heated it up.

    I turned it off last night, and will check the temp right as I turn it on to see how it is.

    On a different note. Are HPs SSD's good? I ask, because they of course offer their 160gb SSD for $270 upgrade. Go to newegg and 160gb SSDs there are closer to $400. Seriously considering getting an SSD for this, and regret not doing it when I built it.

    Hi, I'm interested in buying this and perhaps upgrading the screen myself to a 1080p model (i don't mind being a guinea pig lol). Can someone tell me what the existing LCD panel used is? you can use this program to tell you:

    SIW | Download (download SIW Without Installer (English-Only))

    Go to Hardware -> Video -> Monitor -> Model

    Thanks!

    I'm not sure about the exact temperature, but my hard drive is getting pretty warm as well.

    Can anyone comment on whether the touchscreen is worth it? I put my "free" $300 towards the SSD but I'm a sucker for gadgets and it sounds tempting now. Really, the best solution would just be not to read NBR anymore after buying a laptop :p

    Ain't that the truth! It's the 21st day I've owned this laptop and I put in for an RMA. My needs have changed, and want to think about things a little more.

    No longer need bluray
    No longer need big storage (so I'll go SSD)

    I would be worried about that. The max temp I have seen on mine is 43C and that was on a hot day (100F outside, 78F room temp) when the computer had been on all day, updating, restarting, and running benchmarks.

    Did you have 7200rpm drive Ab?

    Mine ran the exact same temp. I'm going to be switching mine out for the deal that's going on now and getting an SSD so my temp problems should go away.

    I figured out how to disable the area near the buttons on the touchpad, which makes usability far better. For some, the cursor is jumpy b\c your thumb is resting on the bottom of the touchpad. This confuses it b\c it thinks it's another finger. This should fix the issue:

    1. go to the synaptic touchpad settings
    2. enable zones
    3. make the bottom left and right zones as wide as possible and try to get the height to where the buttons end
    4. make each zone have no keybinding - one of the options for the zone action when touched is to disable the entire zone from being activated when touched

    this should fix the issue..let me know if it works for you

    Is it true that there aren't any visible fingerprints on the dv6t select since its a metal finish, and does the stickers get in the way of the finger print reader?

    Yes and yes. I can only get fingerprints to show when my fingers are really greasy, i.e. after eating fried chicken and not washing my hands, and mine came with the Win7 sticker right under the fingerprint reader so I had to move it.

    Welp, I went to bestbuy and checked out a dv6t and kind of liked what I saw. Wasn't a fan of the touch pad, but the rest of the setup looked pretty good. The setup I'm looking at now is:

    * Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    * Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-450M Dual Core processor (2.40GHz, 3MB L3 Cache)with Turbo Boost up to 2.66 GHz
    * FREE Upgrade to 6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    * 160GB (Solid State Drive Flash Module)
    * 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 switchable graphics
    * 15.6" diagonal High Definition LED HP Brightview Widescreen Display (1366x768)
    * No TouchScreen (includes HP TrueVision Webcam)
    * SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
    * Intel Wireless-N Card
    * Full-size island-style backlit keyboard with HP TrueVision Webcam + Fingerprint Reader
    * 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (standard)
    * Microsoft(R) Office Starter 2010
    * HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

    For 969 or 1062 after tax. Washington state tax is pretty rough. Tacked on 92 dollars :( . Seems like a pretty banging deal though. I have 21 days after I receive the item to return it no questions asked right?

    Edit: Btw, does anyone have the 160g SSD that comes with the dv6t? Does it have TRIM?

    I just discovered this forum. It sounds like I got a similar deal to everyone else.

    HP Pavilion dv6t Select Edition customizable Notebook PC
    • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    • Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-540M Dual Core processor (2.53GHz, 3MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 3.06GHz
    • 4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • FREE Upgrade to 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    • 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5470 switchable graphics
    • 15.6" diagonal High Definition LED HP Brightview Widescreen Display (1366x768)
    • TouchScreen with HP TouchSmart's intuitive multi-touch applications
    • FREE Upgrade to Blu-ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
    • Intel Wireless-N Card
    • Full-size island-style backlit keyboard with HP TrueVision Webcam + Fingerprint Reader
    • 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (standard)

    For $975

    I find the touch screen to be plenty responsive, and frequently more convenient than going back to the track pad. The one thing I wish I could do is customize the buttons on the left. I mean who actually uses Windows Live Mail? The fact that I can't customize them is the only thing that I don't like about this laptop. The glossy screen is soon to be fixed via a ViewGuard filter.

    In the beginning they offered different processor options. Notice he received the free upgrade to 500gb hard drive and free Bluray upgrade instead of the free 6gb of RAM upgrade which is going on right now.

    I recently ordered mine and I would have loved to been able to get a processor faster than the 450m, to better future proof it, however I have the 430m right now and it's plenty fast.

    Just got my dv6tSE. It's one of the most attractive laptops I've ever seen, I don't know how HP plans to make the ENVY superior in terms of style because they really outdid themselves on this one. This site needs to get a review up ASAP because this laptop is hands-down the best buy at the moment for the mainstream category. Some notes and pictures:

    • All lighting (buttons and indicators) are a bright white; a welcome change to typical green/red/blue
    • Keyboard is amazing and easy to use; direct buttons to change volume, screen brightness, etc.
    • The color is unique and grows on you fast; its kinda between silver and champagne
    • Everything seems to be laid out perfectly; no obnoxious design issues that I've noticed yet

    Showing lid grain and gorgeous HP logo:

    [IMG]

    The logo also lights up when computer is on:

    [IMG]

    Full-frontal with lit keyboard:

    [IMG]

    Island-style keyboard; note the silver trim on the touchpad:

    [IMG]

    Silver trim also a nice touch on the hinges:

    Yea I like that Argento design on the dv6t's. That laser etched floral pattern on the E14's...not the biggest fan of. Otherwise, I really liked the dv6 not select edition at bestbuy.

    Sure, gimme a day or so to play around with it and I'll do a more comprehensive review. So far it is living up to my expectations.

    I haven't found a way to turn it off yet. Unlike the keyboard backlight, there's no obvious button.

    I removed one of the warning stickers with ease. I haven't tried with the Intel and i5 sticker yet. I suspect it'll be just as easy. I usually just leave them on, but the the i5 sticker is crooked so I have no choice. :)

    I am tempted to pull the trigger on this computer. My current computer is a DELL 8400 with 512mb of ram and has served me well but is about to be put to the pasture. Do I need 8GB of RAM and is the touchscreen worth it. Those are the two options I am hung up on.

    On a side note I've figured out a fairly hackey way to change the functions of the dedicated buttons on the left. So far I've changed the email button to open my gmail in the browser.

    Battery life tests would be nice (screen at 60%, balanced profile with wifi on) and how did you change the dedicated button functions?

    I'll have to run some tests for a formal answer on the battery life.

    For the dedicated functions I created a batch file, converted it to an exe using this and then put that in place of the existing app. The email button is ultimately pointing to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Mail\wlmail.exe". I need to do some more digging to see if it's actually pointing to a shortcut somewhere instead of directly to the application. This works for now though.

    Here are some thoughts on a configuration with the i5-430, multi-touch screen and blu ray, most of the other specs fit in with others' descriptions (4gb ram, 320gig hd, 1gb video card, backlit keyboard).

    Overall, it looks and feels great, very solid. The keyboard is very comfortable to type on and nicely spaced. It actually feels better to me than a Mac keyboard - nothing against Mac, just personal preference as I experimented with both in store. The unit gets a little warm when charging or under moderate use, but not too bad (I haven't had HD temps go above 43C or so.

    The touch screen is an infinity screen and seems quite good overall in terms of brightness, contrast, and build quality, thought it is very reflective. I don't find that to be a problem, but those who prefer anti-glare will definitely be thrown. As for the responsiveness of the touch screen itself, it's pretty great. You can adjust sensitivity of the touch, but generally it performs extremely well. I don't find the actual touch screen apps that HP includes all that useful, but they are a pleasant enough diversion. Where I find the touch comes in most handy is in using a browser or windows 7 itself. If you become proficient at it you can pretty much go "Minority Report" with this thing and move windows, access tabs, pull up folders, do all kinds of things. Is it necessary? Not necessarily. Is it neat? Absolutely. (For someone who asked, it does scroll like an iPhone or iPod touch, which can actually be hard on the eyes at full brightness on a screen this large.) It will definitely save you some time here and there (and by time, I mean "seconds", for what that's worth) over using the trackpad, which in itself is good if not great. If you just use an odd touch here and there, I don't know if it's worth it, but if you put the time into learning the ins and outs it's pretty cool, and again, works very well.

    As for the i5, I haven't had any problems, it performs very well. You will notice a bit of lag as the apps from the actual HP touchscreen interface load, but I don't know if that's a reflection of the processor or that app suite. In terms of gaming, I've played Mass Effect 2 on it and it runs great. The system definitely gets loud when playing (that's the only time I've noticed it get loud), so you'd do well playing with headphones or ear buds.

    Other random notes:

    The backlit keyboard is nice. Maybe a slight bit of light seepage here and there, not a big deal.

    The hinges and top of the computer are very solidly built and take a bit of effort to open, but not in an annoying way, it's actually quite satisfying.

    I haven't really used the programmed keys on the left side of the keyboard (mail, touchscreen apps, web, printer, calculator), but also haven't found them annoying in terms of lining hands up to to type.

    Speakers (altec lansing) seem fine, not outstanding but certainly better than most laptops.

    The click buttons of the touch pad are definitely stiff and louder than most, which actually makes using the touch screen more appealing, but again, whether that's an issue depends on personal preference.

    Blu Rays take a bit of time to load, but play well.

    I guess under certain lighting you may notice a slight tinge of pinkish/purplish color, but it's not at all distracting or obvious.

    That's about it for now. I just wanted to share these thoughts as more people are becoming aware of this computer, since this forum has been very helpful to me. The only reason I would consider returning or exchanging the computer is to maybe go without the touchscreen and get a slightly faster processor or larger hard drive, but honestly I don't think that's necessary as I'm a fairly light user. My wife is not a techy at all and pointed out that she thinks the touchscreen is reflective (pardon the pun!) of the way things are generally headed. I don't know if that's true, but it's definitely a gadget of the moment and, like I said, kind of fun. Oh, and there's a Microsoft "globe" app that shows really shows off the touchscreen in a great way as far as zooming, tilting, turning, it's pretty cool. Am I trying to convince myself to keep it? Maybe ;)

    I hope you find these thoughts helpful, and thank those who have helped me out along the way.

    Hi all, I just discovered this site after finding that awesome offer. I really love how there's so much sharing going on and I'm really interested in getting this.

    One quick question though, I'm planning to buy this and ship it to Singapore so I'd be really grateful if anyone could tell me the dimensions of the box it comes in.

    My only wish is that windows would recognize when I almost tapped a button with the touch screen. Many time my aim is just a little off and I have to tap two or three times. That kind of defeats the purpose.
