My dv6 is gonna arrive tomorrow

    I got the i7 with 4 gb ram and a 640 gb hard-disk w/o touchscreen

I was wondering, should I change to an i5 3gb ram 500 gb hard-disk with touchscreen?

    It costs $50 less

Just wondering if the i7 is worth losing the touchscreen and gaining 1 gb ram/ 140 gb space

Upon receiving the computer and without performing a clean reinstall, which drivers should be updated?

Also, with which drivers should previous versions be removed before installing the new ones?

    I assume you're looking at pre-built models?

3GB RAM won't be very future-proof at all, but you can always upgrade. The real question is whether you want more battery life or more performance.

No customization offered here in India, they come imported and cost 20% more(custom duty)

I don't really need the battery life. (I just take it to college at times to show-off my work). Just wondering if i7 is worth it? Since i've been hearing that i5 can do everything just as well (including gaming). Then I could get the touchscreen (which I heard is good)

    What do you suggest?

And thanks for the reply =)

Actually, for gaming, more and more games are asking for quad-cores.For most things, you won't notice a difference, but at the same time the i7 will outperform in some applications while the i5 will never truly outperform the i7. Still, the i5 sounds like enough for you, depending on your major. What is your major, if you don't mind me asking?

    Hm...

*I think* the i5 will be just fine if you really want the touchscreen and don't mind having to upgrade your RAM later.

Its been so long since I owned a laptop with a GPU even :/

    I'm getting the i7 in a few hours..Lets see :D

    Thanks for the advice.

    I'm confused about this...
With switchable graphics, which drivers are we supposed to install?

No, its up to date of what's available on MS update.

For switchable, best install the HP ATI drivers.

I believe I screwed up my video drivers
Where can I find the latest driver(s) to use for switchable graphics?
A specific link would be very helpful

And how do I install this driver, step by step?
And should I uninstall old drivers?

I've heard the touch screen is fun and cool, but not the most practical thing, so it has it's uses, but it's not a performance upgrade. i5 should be fine for you, but you would definitely need to upgrade the 3GB of RAM, which would wipe out the cost difference. 500 GB hard drive should also be enough. I would keep the i7 though, unless you really want the touch screen for fun. The i7 version is just more future proof for not much more money.

    Thats what I was thinking

because if I upgrade the ram, i'd have to remove one (I can't customize)

I'd have to pay for the 2 gb again =/ and have 1 gb to shove up my :D

@S@Nguine It could also be a driver issue. Try switching to the integrated graphics, and uninstall the ati drivers. Then, if you can, go to HP's website and find the ati drivers and reinstall them. Switch to the dedicated graphics, funinstall the integrated graphics driver, and reinstall the new one. If its so bad that you cant make it far enough on HP's website, trying hooking it up to an external monitor and updating the drivers then. If that still doesnt work, send it back.

Hey everyone, has anyone had any problems if they've uninstalled or disabled the HP Wireless Assistant (and can it just be easily disabled from msconfig if such a thing exists in Windows 7)? Will the wireless hardware in the laptop work fine with the standard Windows wireless software?

I'm not sure. It might not even really be loose, actually, now that I've checked it out more closely.

Also, note that I've been carrying it around in a bookbag and that I'm a bit paranoid.

Anybody else have an issue with the frame of the screen (touchscreen) being loose. Its hard to explain, but on the left edge of the screen the framing snaps in and out of place slightly. It is very annoying but not a huge deal, but if somebody else has had this issue, any solutions??

Also, anybody have a successful notebook cooler for this laptop?

    Thanks!

Ya I noticed it too. The left side is like a small hill, but barely noticeable.

What do you mean by power core (Sorry I'm not computer savvy)

Oh and does anybody have the link to make right and left click only, not scroll enabled.

First day with this laptop so far pretty good. I'm taking a big risk not buying a school sponsored company (lenovo/apple) because these companies have repair guys onsite so I hope this is worth it.

I tried to reinstall the bios driver for my comp from hp.com/support and now it just keeps restarting over and over again without reaching windows. The only way I can get it to reach windows and get online (to type this) is if I hit esc near the end of the bios boot cycle otherwise it either enters bios setup and restarts. If anyone has any tips including try reinstalling bios I'd love to hear it. Thanks.

The bottom of my laptop gets scorchingly hot after a few hours of watching videos. This seems odd, however, since the max temps were only 67C/58C for the CPU and 57C for the GPU. Odd.

... Well, actually GPUZ is telling me that the max for one part of the GPU was 32767.5C. Could that be the issue? :p

When watching movies just switch the graphics to intel, this helps in reducing heat to a great extent. One of the things I noticed during my two months usage was that when the laptop becomes very hot the battery life decreases rapidly.Always keep the vents between the battery and VGA port from any kind of blocks.

For some reason, when I disconnect from the AC adapter, it doesn't automatically switch to integrated graphics like I have said in the switchable graphics properties. The problem here is that even when I click on 'switch to integrated', nothing happens! What's wrong here?

EDIT: I saw there was an update available from HP for the Intel graphics but it refuses to install on my system.

I'm keeping the vents totally clear, which is why the internal temps of the CPU and GPU are staying low. It's only the casing that's heating up.

And do you mean that the maximum battery life is decreasing?

I had a dell vostro which used to over-heat..

It used to shut down itself because of it =/

If you keep it at least 2-3 inches above a solid surface it should help a lot!

Even without the laptop cooler, it just needs air to go in!

    Use books (I used dumbbells)

    What is the surrounding temperature?

Its a good 30~+ degrees here

The odd thing is that the exterior is hot to the touch, but that's it. The GPU and CPU internal temps aren't anywhere near the critical point. I think the simple solution is just to not watch HD videos nonstop for five hours straight. :p Shouldn't be a problem now that the site I was watching videos on is down. XD
