Just got my DV6T SE today, love it! Wondering if I should update the BIOS, it has F09 on it, F12 is available now -- what's the difference between the two?
-
Hi Guys:
Well, happens. When it poors it really poors. My just about 1 month old DV6TSE took a dump. Started freezing on me about a week ago and would require a hard reboot (occured on a daily basis). The last time it occured, I contacted HP Tech Support via their online chat.
The guy was completely useless. He blamed Firefox for freeze up of the machine. Also said too much software loaded would cause that. Apart from Firefox and Itunes, I haven't installed anything else. Had me do a HD check (done through BIOS). Friggin thing was gonna take over an hour so I aborted. I could tell he was trying to move on to the next case. Restarted computer and noticed that the fans were running way too loud and processor state was stuck at 35% usage with no apps open. Turned off notebook and tried to restart. Nothing, nada happened. I did noticed that the left palmrest of the notebook was agregiously hot!!
Called HP CS/tech support. Sent back to HP for repairs or replacement. Hope this doesn't take too long. Glad I didn't sell my old Sony SZ.

This is going to be my last HP for sure if they're still having issues like this...
-
Makes me a bit worried as well. Although my gf has a dv6se from two years ago when hp had really bad cooling issues and that thing is been great. She doesnt do anything but web browse but it runs cool without the need for a notebook cooler. This is going to be my first personal hp and i hope it turns out well. As of right now three days of use im not really impressed. Ive come from many home brews, Dells and ibm/lenovos and my last notebook was a gateway fx series which was surprisingly awesome and still is. I got the hp because itwas more portable than a 12lb 17in. Beast
Anyone -
THis has been asked before but I haven't seen an answer.... Has anyone seen or had both the Touchscreen and NON-Touchscreen models and "is there any difference in particularly VERTICAL viewing angles of one over the other? I have the Touchscreen model.... Ie is one better than the other concerning viewing angles and/or brightness?
Thanks in Advance! -
I doubt it was really hardware
its usually faulty software/ apps/ drivers
Hardware is manufactured by common makers for all companies
Dont worry; Your last hp will last you a while -
-
Reposting this in the hopes one of you has a solution
I tried updating bios using the newest driver from hp.com/support and now when I do a restart it just starts shutting down and turning on over and over before it even reaches windows. I let it do it for a couple minutes to see if maybe that was part of the bios reinstallation but it didn't seem normal and I found out if I hit escape near the end of the bios it would launch windows, but not unless I hit escape. Should I try reinstalling the bios driver again?
Thanks -

No, don't bother to upgrade until you are currently satisfied with your setup after 30 days.
-
um for your sound thing try changing the windows sound theme or maybe in accessibility you have something turned on causing the box to sound off.
If your HD isnt clicking or making any noise and it isnt running stupid hot it should be fine.
Window 7 ultimate is great but if your not going to take advantage of the data encryption and XP mode which you can pretty much do with virtual box or VMware its kinda pointless.
I assume its also 64 bit right?
Which one is right for you? - Microsoft Windows -
depends what which x86 or x64 is installed ...he could just run anytime upgrade on it
I guess its x64 home premium -> x64 ultimate -
true but why downgrade an OS. ours all came with 64 didnt it? and if he did get 6gigs of ram x86 wouldnt even see the extra 2 gigs after 4.
-
-
Maybe he got old hardware that doesn't have 64 bit support and still want to use.

The question is are you planning to use the same laptop for 2,3,4 years??
Consider how much to it cost to maintain it, and problems that could occur over time.
How much you trust yourself in prevention of theft? -
for 10bux lojoack? i guess id do it. if you got infected id wipe it out unless you feel confident in knowing you have removed the punl file. do a start up in safemode and see if you delete any of the infected files. if you cant do it then you can also use a live linux cd and browse your computer for them and delete them that way.
only do this if you really feel comfortable with knowing what should and shouldnt be there. -
Anybody know where the numlock key is?
-
-
work as f1-f12 keys and not the media shortcuts?
It happens with numlock in other laptops -

For those of you with the dv6t se, would you recommend a clean installation of Windows, a minimized image recovery, or just uninstall un-needed software? which would be best?
-
Hmm depends on user's tech experience
Clean install:
The best method but requires time and research. I prefer to know exactly what is installed and tracing of a problem can be resolved by recently installed. Most of the time, significant improvement in performance.
The drawback is that owner must do his homework prior before clean install and also, is confident that the original factory is in full working order. That means the owner has attempted to trial it to its full specification of his order for a short period of time before the wipe.
If faults are found on factory, resolve it as soon as possible, and record the solution.
Minimum image restore:
Interesting new concept to me, but I wouldn't know exactly what did get removed which could be a problem or not. But seem to follow the same rule of thumb as the clean install to be safe and to me, more time consuming and higher discretion then necessary.
Uninstalling unnecessary software is probably the safest method for an inexperienced owner as long the owner thinks ahead first before clicking the uninstall. Most of time, the owner notice some or no performance improvement. -
I did a clean install but it was becoming a pain to install every driver manually
And make sure everything is working (quick keys, finger print reader, wifi etc)
So, I reverted back to factory defaults, uninstalled bloat and used ccleaner to keep my registry clean
I don't notice any lag as such~
CPU usage at idle is <= 1% -
Minimized image recovery is really easy, and if you are inexperienced like me, that's what I recommend. It does a better job than just uninstalling, and is much less tricky than a clean install. Well, I've never actually tried a clean install, but I was reading up on how to do it, and I didn't feel confident enough to do it. It is generally known to be complicated if your new to it as well. With the minimized image recovery, I just set it to go, followed the instructions, and was done in about an hour. You have to click through a few things but most of the time you can just leave it alone. After it finished, I uninstalled the HP Mediasmart software, as that seems to be the only bloatware it leaves behind, and I was done. However, a clean install will improve performance more, so if you fell like your up to it, then that is the best method.
Since I returned my dv6tse and am now getting an Envy 15 I might try a clean install on it if I have the time. -
Has anyone with a SSD done the Minimized Image Recovery? I'm wondering if this is a good idea or not. I don't know how it will effect the drives performance and quite frankly I'm a little crazy when it comes to SSD performance.

@eight35pm Which site's directions were you reading? I'd like to do a clean install on my envy 15 when I get it. I won't have the high performance of an ssd, so every little bit counts.

ok. is there a way to turn off the glowing HP logo? I assume it might have to be a physical disconnect. It cant be the backlight because when the screen powers down the logo is still lit. anyone got any insight?
also does anyone know the original release date for the DV6TSE? -
Unfortunately you will need to take it apart in order to unplug the logo light. Not worth the time and effort if you ask me.

hey guys wireless n networks wont show on my computer but it has intel n with bluetooth, help?

I just got a DV6T SE
$950
• Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
• Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-520M Dual Core processor (2.40GHz, 3MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.93GHz
• 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5470 switchable graphics [HDMI, VGA]
• 4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
• 160GB (Solid State Drive Flash Module)
• 9 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (over-sized)
• 15.6" diagonal High Definition LED HP Brightview Widescreen Display (1366x768)
• HP TrueVision Webcam
• Blu-ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
• Intel Wireless-N Card with Bluetooth
• Backlit Keyboard with Fingerprint Reader
I have had it about a week and for the most part I really like it. One thing I noticed it that the metal backing seems to not be that tight and one or two spots has to be popped back in a lot.
My screen messed up today and they said if warranty did not cover it they want like $350 to replace it. I told them I just got it but they say it may not be covered. Does $350 not seem ridiculous high to fix it? I could just about buy another laptop swap the screen and still have the other one I could hook up to a monitor.
Does anyone make a screen I can buy and replace it myself?
