Oh crap, if only I had waited 3 more days, the 580M looks delicious. But the hp configuration app seems to think it's a quad core, it wouldn't let me select it with the 5650 switchable card.
As I read somewhere on this forum, the high capacity gives you only about 15-20% more. I got it anyway though, sometime one more minute can make a difference.
I'm not sure what you mean by not having to worry about it wearing out. Do you mean the high capacity one is more robust or something, or just that you can afford to work more on battery without plugging the AC?
You really only need to drain the battery once every week or two, and can keep it plugged in the rest of the time.
-
Doh...that 580m looks pretty nice. Think it'll be swappable into existing cpu slots?
Oh, just did some research and they appear to be the same socket. Same tdw I think too. Potential swap. -
Also today in class my computer got extremely hot out of nowhere and fans turned on full blast. I had to shut it down it was getting so loud. Did two full restarts till it finally calmed down and even now I can still hear it a little. I was running high performance with it plugged in and just running 10 firefox tabs and one note recording audio, no other programs, except background virus protection. I turned it down to power save but the high fan still continued as well as the heat. Anyone have a fix to this.
I'm running windows 7 enterprise 64 bit which shouldn't run particularly hot since it's made for business. i have access to windows 7 ultimate too if that might fix the problem. -
Swapping the windows 7 edition won't do anything.
I'm using an i5 and the fan barely turns on while on battery. And when it is on, it sounds like a whisper and for a short time. -
It goes through the bios boot cycle but then shuts down before the windows boot cycle and turns itself back on and redoes the bios boot cycle again. This process will continue basically forever. I let it go for an hour at one point and it was still doing the same thing as before. The only way to reach windows is to hit esc near the end of the boot cycle.
If anyone has any suggestions for that I'd love to hear them as well.
Thanks -
I can't really hear my fan even if its 70 degrees but
you can go to the powerplan > advanced plan settings > maximum processer state
and decrease it to like 40-50%..I keep it at that when watching non-HD movies or browsing etc. I only use 100% when gaming.
Try raising the laptop? maybe there is an airflow problem..Try doing the same tasks with your laptop raised 2-3 inches [with books or something] -
Uh the fan, shouldn't be on at 21 C
, man you got a nice ambient temp.
70 C? uh that's really hot
Try what Disturbed3d suggested -
It reaches 70 when its on high-performance and I open a full-screen app!
Max I've seen so far is 80, when it was on high-per for a good 5-6 hours
It went down when I raised the bottom -
Hi
my lappy temp are
idle with intel graphics: 30-40
idle with 5650 :40-50
gaming with 5650 : 60 -90 highest
dv6t se i5,4gb,5650
are the above temperatures are normal???? -
-
Is the ambient temperature high? You should keep the laptop on a solid surface or keep it raised. Else all seems normal -

Hey there, found this thread and after a few hours of reading I'm feeling pretty confident in a dv6tse purchase.
I was hoping I could get some advice on a couple config options.
I'm planning to use the computer for school/starcraft2/watching movies on long trips mostly. I do plan on running strictly on battery power a lot of the time for the school / movie watching portions and would like to factor that in my configuration decisions.
The questions I had were about power increases of a processor upgrade from the i5-460m to the i5-560/580 when compared to upgrading ram from 6gigs to 8gigs. I opted against the i-7's because I heard they're pretty heavy on battery drain.
The ram I'm not really sure about, I simply went with the extra $100 for 2gigs of ram because the 1.3ghz upgrade seemed kind of minor, would anyone recommend otherwise?
Most of these upgrades i'm purchasing simply to break the 1399.99 threshold. I went against blu-ray because I don't play to use it, I went for the touchscreen for novelty mostly (is the novelty really not that exciting and would the money better be spent on processor/ram), second battery was a no brainer, 1 gig graphics card upgrade was for gaming, harddrive upgrade to 640/7200 was for memory/faster speed for very cheap (does the increased harddrive speed put a serious drain on the battery?)
Any help would be appreciated. -
If you are pushing for battery life, the best one is a SSD drive, it has the benefit for speed and low power usage at the cost of size and price.
-
If you need the quad core for school projects and stuff go for it, but I didn't because I wanted switchable graphics for extended battery life. My laptop generally lasts for 4 to 4.5 hours depending on what I'm doing on the standard battery. I turn wifi off, screen dimmed, etc etc. As far as 6 to 8 gigs of ram, do you really need that much? I barely use 4 out of 6 gigs of ram my dv6t has when gaming. I think I can upgrade to a 580m later, but the 450 has been sufficient for everything so far.
I thought I'd game at school, but the fan runs like like an engine on a fighter jet. Slow spool up to heavy exhausting of hot air. So I generally avoid gaming unless the environment is noisy.
I just checked the hp website and noticed it's really hard to get "just what you need" while hitting that 1399 mark. It's up to you man, but I'd get a 580m, 5650, 6gigs or ram, maybe the solid state hard drive, and such. -
The 580M is the logical way to go. It's even better than the i7-720QM in some benchmarks, while having the advantages of integrated graphics and lower power consumption. As for RAM, even 6GB is a stretch, unless you're planning on running 4 concurrent Virtual Machines or something, in which case you really need a desktop. There was an article on tomshardware about how anything more than 3GB yields no performance increase, even with something like 100 IE windows open and very heavy multitasking. RAM does drain the battery, and when I was configuring my purchase, I seriously thought about skipping the free upgrade to 6GB just to avoid any heating issues or shortening the battery life. But being the greedy tech guy that I am, I naturally went for the 6GB.

So, my order has been "in production" for two days. How long does that normally take? And what statuses does an order go through before it's shipped? My estimated ship date is October 12th. Will it really take two weeks?

How good is the webcam?
-
Not that great

Is it a bad thing that my gpu reached 84 degrees on stock clocks? Playing just cause 2?
and for some reason winrar works really slow? Does it have anything to do with windows services? Cause i tweaked em earlier =/ -
Er...my over clocked gpu never goes past 64*c...and that's after hours of gaming...
-
Ouch =/
its at 58 atm
2 tabs + a pdf + IM client open
Ambient temperature here is about 30 degrees? Whats yours?
Ran FurMark and it reached 80 in 6 minutes ;_; -
Outside temps are about 53* farenheit. Even when I got my laptop in the summer with 80-100 degree weather my computer still never hit near 70's*c on the stock thermal paste.
-
Should I look for ways to cool it down? or is 81 OK? -
Did you mess with the thermal paste at all? Sounds like the gpu isn't even transferring heat to the heat sink...
-
I didnt keep track of the gpu temp before..Could it be software? I installed windows 7 ulti a day ago..
CPU temp never seems to cross 85? Actually it remains at 70-75 even after hours of gaming..85 is with bad ventilation -
Still doesn't sound quite right to me...
-
Or should I call hp? Will they consider the case? It isnt really crashing but who likes high temps ;_; -
If you're not scared you should try to replace the thermal paste with arctic silver 5.
-
Well I am sorta scared =/ I've never done it before and I'd have to import arctic silver 5 since we don't get it in India as far as I know..
Are there many ways in which I could screw the paste up? -
poor pre-cleaning, applying too much or too little, poor contact, accident introduction of air bubbles, clean up, short circuit...etc.
Anyways, it's better to practice on an old worthless machine for awhile until you feel confident to do perform the naughty deed on a brand new machine. -
is it hard to replace the therma paste? where is it again? mine is fine, but my friend recommended it to me....
-
it's the stuff that allows heat to transfer to the metal of your heat sink. it's not that hard to do, all you need to apply is about half a grain of rice size on the cpu/gpu. of course it takes time to break the stuff in and there are different application methods. I just put a small dab on my cpu / gpu and the results have been ok. Nothing steller, but it did help a little bit. my gpu would hit 65-67 when I first got my laptop and now it never goes past 62. Unless I game for hours on end straight [Ie: dragon age], then it hits 64-65. Cpu though...still gets hot. Mid 80's to low 90's, dunno what's up with that.
-
If it still high or close to worse than factory after of a week of curing...good chance that you misapplied.
My cpu tops off at ~68C for a few hours of constant high 90%+ cpu usage using stock paste. -
my power brick to that charges my battery get over 100deg. Is this normal?
At times its almost too hot to touch. I don't game, just surf with 3-4 tabs open and a few im programs.
Seems to get its hottest when recharging a drained battery. -
FYI, every power brick I've ever used gets hot when used. Also, what you're doing on the computer wouldn't affect the heat all that much unless you're doing something that happens to draw a lot, and I mean A LOT, of power. -
I ordered my DV6tse last week, but for some reason when I selected a dual core processor the website said I had to go with a graphics card (hd 5650) for quad cores and vice versa. I now see that the website has fixed this mistake, but I'm wondering if this will have any effect on my order (since I went ahead and ordered it anyways). Are the HD5650 for dual core and quad core processors physically different, or is it just a matter of the drivers?

I'm having some trouble getting my usb mouse to work. The laptop recognized it, installed what it needed, and said it was running fine but the mouse does nothing (scroll, click, etc) It's a basic Microsoft usb mouse. Anybody have any insight on this problem?
-
what kinda CPU temps are you guys with the i7 getting?
my idle temps are mid 50s. when browsing heavily I'm at the mid 60s on average. when gaming low to mid 80s. -
-
Bah! My order is still "in production!" The estimated ship date is on the 12th. I really hope it doesn't take another ten days!
-
-
My order is in Memphis, experiencing "clearance delay". It's been like that for a few days, and I heard it stays like that for a while before hp sends them the required clearance, this being an international shipment from China. Sometimes I think about driving there to pick it up. It's only an 8 hour drive
-
Last Tuesday. Last HP I bought it shipped in two days--it was a custom notebook too. But that was back in '06. I'm just impatient since I'm getting this as a replacement for my dying Asus N61.

ok. so in the BIOS i found a fan always on option. I turned it off. the fan will still kick in. I fired up COD:MW2 and played for about 15min and the fan did kick in and i didnt go past 75C but idle or regular web browsing its at 50-55. when the fan was always on it was anywhere between 35-45. Whats the Max the I520m can go til i should start to worry? the room isnt that warm at 60 tho.
Think this Fan always on option on off would be good to save on Battery life when using the intel graphics? -

Dude Wheres My Kill Notebook Enthusiast
Hey peoples...so I recently tried my hand at the Medal of Honor Open Beta on the DV6T...results were less than I expected. To say in a certain way, it was like viewing a slide-show at the LOWEST settings. And yes, to avoid the obvious comments, I did check to see the High-Performance graphics were enabled. What gives? Any help would be appreciated.
(P.S. is there a way to see in-game whether or not it's running off the HD 5650? Thanks!) -
Hmm MOH beta runs fine on Standard high settings, imo.
Well my way to check is run a dxdiag or check device manager or look for the CCC icon in taskbar or Switchable Settings for the 5650 is running.
Also running 90C for a long period of time is pretty bad... will shorten the lifespan of the cpu and it is difficult to convince hp about that under warranty. Then again, it's difficult to convince them anyways.
