You'd be taking a chance with any version. The problem should be corrected by reapplying the thermal paste, though, so if you know how to do that, I say go for it.

Thank you for your advice and for such a fast reply. :)

Hmmm, in HP's perspective, would applying thermal paste void their warranty?

Yes, it would void the warranty. But you could purchase a refurbish model which usually has a 90 day warranty for much less. They are pretty much brand new with a smaller warranty.

Computer storage are designed in powers of 2. Marketing are rounded off to the ceiling of powers of 2.

Thank you for that info Falco152.

I definitely wouldn't want to void the warranty,
    especially if something else breaks/malfunctions.

I also plan to use a credit card that would give me
a free 1 year extended warranty.

I'm not sure if I'm willing to take a gamble on a 90 day warranty, just
to save a few hundred. Especially with the heating issues posted by
City Pig and others that I've read. Along with the awesome coupons HP
is offering, I'm definitely persuaded to buy a new one.

If it was a 1 year warranty on refurbs, just like Alienware,
then I would definitely consider buying a refurb.

With the heating issues aside, I'm going to try out
a DV6 model based on positive reviews and the backlit keyboard. :)

You can always send it to them if it does have the issue, or just get a cooling pad.

Also to warn you, that the dv6t series, do not offer a dual band wifi solution, yet almost all other models do. Odd ;)
Also replacing it with a decent one is difficult to find due to the whitelisting.

HP does sell a dual band wifi card that works with dv6t. I purchased the card directly from HP after realizing the card that came with my laptop was not dual band.

HP Parts don't sell the intel centrino wifi 6250.
The other dual band they do sell is a Broadcom 43224 802.11a/b/g/n 2x2 WLAN which is ughh.
kinda sux that my motherboard does not has a wimax passthrough.

Have to tried actually connecting to a 5Ghz network or detect them at least??
But its nice to know the antennas are 2.4/5.8 types instead of 2.4

I didn't buy the dual band card just to say that I had dual band. There was a need. The Broadcom sees both of the SSIDs from my dual band router. I can switch between the two with out any issues. More than can be said for my Intel Wifi Link 1000 BGN.

Thank you elp and Falco152 for that additional info.

    I'll take that into consideration.

I double checked with customer service for the
credit card I plan to use. They won't apply the
free 1 year extended warranty unless I purchase
a laptop that has a 1 year warranty first.
So, I don't have the option of purchasing an HP
refurb with the 90 day warranty.

Well for an exchange they wanted me to buy the new one while sending the old one back, but i didn't have another 1200 dollars laying in my account. So I returned mine, got a refund and then re ordered it. They took FOREVER refunding me and I complained a lot so I ended up getting like 300 dollars in perks for my current one :) It cost me around 1200 dollars again but thats because i got 2 year accidental protection and Lojack the second time.

I absolutely agree. HP, why put the HDD LED activity light on the side where it's
    not easily viewable? Uugghh!

Would've been nice if it was placed where it's easily viewable, like near the power button. I'm testing/using an HP DV6-3160US and an Acer 4820TG-7805, still deciding which one to keep. On the Acer, the HDD LED, Num Lock LED , and Caps Lock LED, are right next to the power button where it is easily viewable.

On the HP, it seems like an afterthought putting the LED on the side.
You have to bend your neck/body to even see it. There's lots of space
near the power button, not placing the LED there leaves me baffled.

I prefer using the windows / unix resource manager to watch HDD activity cause they detail every application's IO usage. Much better than a blinking LED that only tells it is in use or not. Not a great indicator of heavy or light use.

I have a question that I searched for, but couldn't find the answer to. I recently purchased the DV6t SE, with the HP Touchscreen (which I love). But I want to do a fresh install, because right now the boot procress is crawling.

I've down clean installs countless times, but what I'm worried about is losing the stripped down HP media center that you get as soon as you boot the machine. It boots into that and then you choose to go into windows. If I format the C:, and the recovery partition too, because I have the restore discs, is the software to restore that feature included on the restore disks, or how would I go about enabling that functionality from a clean install. Thanks for your help!

My laptop was misrepresented to have the Intel Wifi ABGN (dual band) card but instead it came with the Intel BGN (single band) card. This was particularly frustrating because I was very clear that it was important for me to have a dual band card, because I have the Netgear WNDR37AV and it broadcasts its N signal at 5GHz. Can't connect to 5GHz with a single band card. So I called HP and they recommended I go with the Broadcom ABGN card.

I was wondering if anyone is using this card, and if it's working well for them. Any other thoughts about which card I should replace my crappy singleband card with? Thanks again

Yeah, pretty much the entire case is etched aluminum. It's a very good looking laptop, but it does give off that pinkish sheen in the right light that so many others have complained about.

Hmmmm I think I may stick with the dv8t. Darn the 1366x768 screen :(
If they had a 1600x900 screen, this would have been great.
With a 1920x1080 rgbled screen, this would have been super awesome..

Good point. I'll follow that method. Thanks!

Besides the LED on the side,
I'm starting to like almost everything else,
from the overall performance, build quality, style,
touchpad (I haven't experienced the erratic behavior and such.
    The buttons are fine),
no heat issues, keyboard (being backlit is a great feature.
I like the feel of the keyboard when typing). The extra keys on the left
side can be bothersome. I'll try to remap them.

The 1366x768 resolution is not as bad as I was expecting on the DV6
15.6" screen. Yes, it would've been nice to have a higher resolution, but the
current screen is bright and clear with no pixelation.

Also the 1366x768 native resolution is great for the ATI HD 5650.
As mentioned by Notebookcheck and other tech/gaming sites,
any higher resolution would decrease ATI HD 5650's gaming performance.

It's starting to be even more difficult for me to choose between the
    Acer 4820TG and the HP DV6. :)

Try look for a site that mixes dark and bright backgrounds with text in between.
See if the fuzz shows up, hopefully doesn't annoys you.

I don't use home premium, but I plan to upgrade to Ultimate soon.

Also, the intel centrino 6250 wifi, is a much better dual card than the broadcom chip.

Can you refer me to some websites where I can
analyze if that characteristic appears on my screen?

    I'm currently using/testing a DV6-3160US.
It's the DV6 version (with an ATI 5650 & backlit keyboard)
that I could order online with no tax and quickly get my hands on
to use. I just needed to personally feel immediately the size, weight, etc.

Ordering anywhere else for me will add some tax or take days to arrive.
It just takes 1 day from J&R (NY) to me (NJ) even with
UPS Ground. And J&R has a great 30 day return/exchange policy with
no restocking fee. So I have a month to use a DV6 to make my final choice. :)

If my final decision is on a DV6, I'll be ordering a custom configured
i5/i7 DV6T SE from HP. Or maybe not, so far the performance of the AMD N950 has
    been satisfactory.

Do you mean that slight space on the upper part of the faceplate?

I noticed that too. It's like due to the angled design of the case, that
    makes that space.

Or you're referring to something else?

If you guys are talking about what I think you are- I can see the "pixel fuzz" on most any site, it depends on the angle I'm looking at the screen from. If I move the screen back and look at it from a "down-up" angle, I see fuzz, even on this site.

Hmmm, I don't see the "pixel fuzz" on this website or
    any I've visited so far.

The screen is sort of washed out / faded in certain viewing angles,
but once I get a good angle the screen is bright, clear, and sharp.

The screen on this particular DV6 is an LGD02AC.

I noticed this also with the disk drive, theres a gap/drop off by the lights. I only have the standard DVD/Lightscribe.

    First Post BTW...

This laptop is great! The metal finish is very nice, although its already getting dirty in the etched areas from my apparent dirty palms. I came from a 5 YO Satellite with a Centrino running XP, so needless to say this machine is Boss. Got the i7, 6gb, 620gb HDD, backlight, finderprint reader, etc.

I must say the backlit/fingerprint reader is well worth the money. I agree with everyone on the build quality, it is very stable, light, and thinner than I expected. Of course, it's much better than my brick satellite. Battery life is impressive also.

Look forward to discussing further in this forum, it's nice to finally have a capable machine again.

    So true, I definitely agree.

The backlit keyboard is very useful in dimly lit/dark locations.

The fingerprint reader, hehe, yes, I thought I wouldn't be using it.
But after awhile, I started liking it a lot. It works fine and useful.

I am impressed with the build quality and dimensions also.
I was expecting it to be very heavy, but isn't.

So the gadgets on my sidebar started to malfunction today. The clock is like inverted and I only see a little gray box for the others. I've tried restarting the computer, troubleshooting, scanning for viruses etc. I can't restore the original look. Please help!

Can you just uninstall the gadgets and reinstall it??

Windows Gadgets are just a zipped up folder that get decompressed into a specific folder.

Has anyone with a blu-ray drive had trouble playing the extended edition of Avatar on Blu-ray?
