The touch screen is brilliant for web surfing. That and the snap feature in windows 7 works great with it. I find myself using it much more that I thought I would. I admit I got it as much for the novelty of it as anything else, but it really is practical too. The fingerprints and smudges are really only visible with the screen off anyway.

If you google the coupon code there are hundreds of websites that have posted this deal. The deals thread on this board says it expires 7/5/2010 at 11:59:59 PM. However the Logic site and Coupon Bay says it expires July 4th. Two other sites say 7/30 and 7/31. They all say up to 1,350 users.

It is an Independence Day sale, so my guess is that the 7/5 date is most accurate. This covers the entire extended July 4th weekend.

Looking at the posted dv6tse pics on this board (without touchscreen) and the video on youtube that shows the touchscreen in action, it appears only the touchscreen has a solid glass display.

Personally, the video on youtube showing the responsiveness of the multi-touch display sold me on it. No idea yet how much I'll actually use it long-term.

Also which is better the amd or intel version? I want equal power on both so i5 450m on intel and 930 on amd

But I've heard it's possible to update switable graphics card driver only on amd not on intel...

Since the price needs to be over $1399 and I don't know how interested I am in the Blu-Ray options, I think I may go with the Touch Screen even with no huge desire for it. My main questions is, are there any negative aspects to getting the laptop with the touch screen? Such as lower battery life, clunkier appearance and heavier weight, worse screen quality? Thanks!

I must have missed that aspect in the pictures. I have the touch version and one of my favorite things is the seamless display

The screen is bezel-less so it's actually a bit trimmer looking and definitely doesn't add bulk. I can't say for the battery life, but I've been getting 3-4 hours or so with moderate brightness and wifi running constantly.

I just took this. Even though it looks like there is a bezel it's entirely internal. There is no physical or visual seam.

I have always wondered, what is the difference between the dv6t and the dv6z? As far as I can tell, dv6z has the amd processor, but it's quad core, so that must mean it does not have switchable graphics right? And no turboboost-like feature either.

Oh no! Looks like the deal has expired. No longer working on the HP site. Anyone else get that?

Luckily I got mine in, but I think a buddy of mine may have missed out!

Yes, the dv6z is the AMD platform version, but it's not limited to the quad core processors. It can use the Turion II dual cores and Phenom II dual/triple cores. Its version of switchable graphics is called PowerXpress which uses a Radeon 4250 instead of Intel HD. Also, AMD's version of Turbo Boost is Turbo Core and as far as I know the only AMD CPUs with that feature are the recently released Phenom II Thuban desktop processors.

Edit: My mistake, you're right that the dv6zse can only be configured with the quad cores. The regular version is the one that can be configured with the processors I mentioned.

Whether it's a touchscreen or not, they are both edge-to-edge (aka no raised bezel around the screen), right?

I can't wait until my laptop ships. I think it should ship today but I'm not sure, I ordered it on the 29th and the estimated date is the 8th. But because of july 4th I'm not sure if they ship today since July 4th is also celebrated to day. But it's almost the 6th in china, after 12:00 am in America on the east coast it will be 12:00pm in china so 12 hour difference. Any thoughts?

I think the only known way to do it is to change the executable by making a bat file launch your specific program and then copying it over the executable where the key corresponds. So when it launches, it will launch your app.

Wow. Surprised. Thought with all the GUI HP puts on the laptop there just had to be an area for drop down functionality of those keys. While most of the hot keys will never need changing, it would be nice to hotkey Gmail to the email button as a for instance.

Can you post the link to the video? Personally I love the touchscreen on the iphone/ipod touch, but having a multi-touch display on such a big screen sounds rather pointless. All the fun zooming features which are a necessity on the ipod seem kind of inane when your screen is 15.6" and low resolution, and I imagine having to reach all over the screen to click links and hit the back button gets old pretty fast. Is that not a problem, or are there handy gestures to speed that up?

Hi guys, I just bought this setup this morning, I kind of rushed it because an earlier post made me concerned for missing out on the $300 coupon. I was wondering if anyone had opinions on it. The more I think about it, the more interested I am in the Touchscreen instead of the Blu-Ray burner. Either one is just a perk because the main components (processor, video card, hard drive) are what I need so I'm wondering which has more usefulness. Can anyone try to convince me on or off the Touchscreen? And, is it possible to call HP and change your custom order? Thanks in advance!

You have to stop reading this board once you have placed your order! :D The same thing happened to me --- I got interested in the touchscreen after placing my order yesterday. Perhaps HP customer service doesn't give a consistent answer, but the customer rep that I just had on the phone said that I would have to cancel the original order and start over. So without canceling the original order, I reconfigured another DV6tSE on the website to include touchscreen and price over $1399, and then tried the $300 coupon. As was the case with DFree earlier today, the $300 coupon did not work for me.

So before you get too carried away with changing your order, I would check to see whether it looks like the coupon will still work for you. I would also call customer service and see if they will make a change for you at 1-888-999-4747. Since you just placed your order, perhaps they would be more willing to make a substitution in your case. Let us know what you find out. Thanks.

To be honest, I think the touchscreen thing is a novelty that will wear off fairly fast. It's really not that useful when the machine is used as a laptop rather than a tablet. Who wants to reach up across the keyboard and hold their hand there just to scroll through webpages?

BluRay on the other hand is the next DVD. It is something that will last for more than a few years. You may not watch BluRay movies but when you want to burn 25/50GB of data on one disc, you'd use BluRay. For me, I chose BluRay because I'll need some sort of entertainment on my 1080p 22" monitor in the dorm!

I think online streaming is the next DVD.. I have Netflix, so I am simply skipping bluray.

I say skip both and get the SSD.

Personally I can't remember the last time I even used any DVD or CD on my current laptop. However, I don't watch movies directly on my laptop. I do sometimes use the laptop as a media server which connects over wifi to my ps3 which is connected to my 50" home tv.

In a few years CD/DVDs of any kind could be a thing of the past with flash memory getting cheaper and larger. I already have a few32gb SDHC cards for my gopro camera that mounts to my street bike. But in a few years, we will all probably be already on to another laptop by then anyway.

Well, I was just saying that not all movies are streaming on Netflix but all BluRay movies are on BluRay discs. Which can therefore be watched on a laptop equipped with a BluRay drive ;)

I'm no doubt going to be one of those late adopters wrt BluRay. Upscaled DVDs still look OK to me, especially on a non 1080p screen.

    If I want a BluRay player I'll get a PS3.

    For all the owners:

What is your feeling on the quality and heat production for this laptop?
HP has the stigma of being not so good quality, but wanted to know from actual users. I'm wondering if this is laptop is better than HP ENVY 14 which just has a better resolution, but 1366x768 doesn't bother me. I currently have 1024x768 on a 14 inch. Assume not big difference.

I dont get it,how did it get back to shanghai.

I don't think they ship on the 5th because independence day and It's coming to the US and since now one is working the ports or airplanes places for fedex thats probably why it went back to the shipping facility in china.

I read that the g1 was in there too but that was from a post in may 2009. So I would like to think it would be the g2 since its 270 = 300 dollars and hp probably has some sort of discount from intel thats why they can sell it for 100 dollars less.

I just called HP customer service and asked them about the SSD brand and model. The customer rep said they use five or six suppliers for the SSDs and he can't say which one I would get, nor would he say the brands. But he insisted that HP thoroughly puts the SSDs through the test paces and would not put anything in there that did not work great --- FWI.

I would ask about TRIM though, that is by far the most important aspect here. Don't G1 drives not support TRIM, while G2s do?

I didn't go in to the G1 versus G2 thing (which I just read about today), because I couldn't even narrow it down to a brand with the rep. Maybe someone else would have more luck? HP Customer Service and Sales number is 1.888.999.4747.

What's the difference between the normal display and the 'edge to edge' display the touchscreen comes with?

Can anyone with an i5 and the 5650 config comment on surface temps (most importantly keyboard and palmrests)? Also, noob question, but will 9 cell battery jutting out affect using a laptop cooler? Thanks!
