If you do "advanced sharing" on the folder you are sharing, you can grant more permissions.. such as read access only, or write (change).. or full control.

Suppose this is why you can only see the files - 1-way? If the other system cannot see the shared files of the other computer, it's usually because of home group/firewall from a suite - ESET, Norton, AVG, Kaspersky, Comodo ..etc interfering. In which case, make a new user account with a password, and set it up for sharing and discovery. Do this on both computers for testing. If this fails, keep the following the same, but include the same home group name.

I run ESET SS5. And this was just the problem. Was put on "strict protection" and made it unable to grab files from on the network. Much to customize for me, going from Vista laptop, XP MCE laptop and Win7, all of them can see each other.

Also, having no passwords can 'cause this problem, not just between different OS/builds.

Windows 8 Consumer Preview in our llanos resume:

Not having start menu is anoying.
Cannot install into a USB Harddisk drive, which is present already in other oses but not this since I don't know when.
Having to log in at the startup, always, is also a pain.

    Programs:

    Internet Explorer Metro Crashed
    Firefox installed and working
K10Stat Runs (Overclock works but cannot set into autorun mode for some reason)
Autohotkey Runs (I can interchange the z for the place of the y, just guess what keyboard I have)

(How to autostart programs like it was before with the start menu: Change Windows 8 Startup Programs | Windows 8 Geek)
(Or basically Run (right click where the start orb used to be)->shell:startup)

    XLaunchPad installed and working
Volume2 (Nice OSD for volume) installed and working

Dirt 3 Installs, took the hell of a lot of time in it. The consumer Preview AMD Driver works wonders with APUs and xfire, no BSODs nor anything like the newer versions.

    Drivers:

    Creative Surround X-Fi Installed/working
AMD graphics installed (Consumer Preview Version)/working
    HP 3D driveguard installed/working
IDT Audio Driver installed (integrated beats HP audio)/working
    Card reader installed/working
fingerprint reader installed but HP SimplePass 2011 simply doesn't install/ DON'T INSTALL OR MAY CAUSE PROBLEMS WITH OTHER INSTALLATIONS

MotionInJoy Installed but Triggers don't move in xbox mod (z axis) for some reason but in calibration they do work

WinCDEmu installed (althought doesn't seem to associate itself automatically to isos, It may be redundant since
windows has now it's own mounting utility)

I honestly only tested DiRT 3 because that's the game that I currently have :D Battlefield 3 was lend from a friend of mine, hence I only did the solo campaign, lol.

but yeah, DiRT 3 with everything on high or ultra except for shadows that ended in low and ambient occlusion also in low, min 37 max 53 fps.

Seems like it might be a stretch after talking to HP on the phone about this new laptop i bought not having its recovery partition in it.

it starts faster... but... better try it for yourself, I think I will not change to windows 8 unless a mod appears that returns back the start button, the windows 7 start menu and removes the forced log in at the startup.

I don't remember very well how to turn off a mac, but indeed we have to press either ctrl+alt+del and press over the power button, to select power off OR... to log off, then shutdown.

Ok, i did figure something out. when i use my vista computer, i can see the win7 computer. When i click on it, i can see 2 folders "users" and "printers". When i try to click on the "users" i get the error saying i cannot do this. The "public" folder on the drive is a subfolder of "users" which i cannot access. if i type the path name directly into my vista computer (ie \\computer name\users\public, i can get into it. so the public folder is actually available but i cannot get there by clicking on the users folder and the "public" folder doesnt show as listed when i click on the computer name on "my network places". so basically i can get to any folder i have shared if i type the name in directly, but i cannot get past the top level folder "users" no matter what i do, even though i set that folder up as a shared folder. doesnt really make sense, but at least in the mean time i can access the folders if i need to.

Has anyone tried this or this AC adapter as a replacement/spare for your dv6z? They are 120W and appear to match in terms of power input/output. I don't really want to spend $80-100 for the one direct from HP if these are equivalent.

HTWingNut, I checked the compatibility list in some of your other threads but that seems to be mostly for hard drive/ssd/ram compatibility.

Sorry for taking a while, I was just extremely busy. You'll have to create a bootable flashdrive and boot into DOS. Then you can flash the bios from within DOS. The windows flasher was too difficult to mod without spending tons of time figuring out how that thing works ;)

    Here you go, enjoy!

    DOS.zip

Edit: Try to run the flash.bat first. If that doesn't work, you might have to run the .exe directly and play around with switches to force a flash. It might complain about the signature not matching anymore, which is understandable, since the bios has been modified.

Installing the Windows 8 Customer Preview AMD Drivers in Windows 7 (Modding the infs and installing them manually via device manager) gives interesting results, according to my test:

    12.1 Preview
    -DiRT 3
    Min 46
    Average 53

    Win8 Customer preview
    -DiRT 3
    Min 44
    Average 57

BUT! less stuttering is noted, according to kombustor the iGPU now reaches more constantly 100%

Edit: Also Skyrim no longer slows down like hell with shadows on high, this driver truly is a great one.

No, no problem. Just some people dive head first into a purchase without any investigation. They do have a good warranty, as long as you're backed up regularly, and can deal with a possible RMA or two, it's dirt cheap.

Great to know. You're adventurous using a preview build ;). I'll wait for RTM. I've had too many issues in the past. But if Win8 helps, I'm all for it. Just delete the Metro UI PLEASE!

Actually... no, I'm not that adventurous. I wanted to install the Win8 CP just because I wanted to test the AMD driver, worked ok there...

THEN I wanted to try the same driver on Windows 7 by moding the inf (but I wonder if that was necessary since our cards are apparently supported)

... what I found is that this driver is great for crossfire users and Windows 7, increases speed in both skyrim and DiRT 3 and gives less stuttering.

P.D. Windows 8 CP was installed on another harddrive, far, far away from my stock hard drive where my dear Windows 7 with start menu and no metro tiles reside. After playing like for 6 hours I decided that I wont use that Win8 CP, so removed the harddrive.... decided to try again using VMware player...

Conclusion: no windows 8 for me unless they return me the mighty start menu bar and allow me to cuztomize the position of the edge that activate the tiles.

Typically how long does it take to image a 64gb/128 m4 or a similar ssd? Using this as a family computer so time is crucial.

Clonezilla did an image (drive to drive, from the usb 2 attached 5400rpm drive to an internal 5400rpm) of about 100GB in about 40 minutes when I swapped drives recently. So not horribly long. Depends on the tool you're using. I personally haven't found Easeus Disk Copy to work well in preserving the partition structure, but as I said Clonezilla worked well and quickly. Plus it's free, vs. Ghost or one of those commercial products.

Microsoft Backup and Restore works great. It will do incremental backups even, and restore your system perfectly well. That being said, I have a Windows Home Server that does daily backups that I could restore to any date in time back six months, and all automated.

Yeah, i've toyed with it in VM's, just not real impressed. I really hope they make MetroUI an option, since it's not really PC friendly. Great for touchscreen tablets, but should not be the standard UI for Windows, period. I considered installing on another HDD as well, but will wait for RTM when it will be more representative. I just think MS spent most of their time tuning the MetroUI since that's the big deal, and will otherwise have a Win 7 UI with a little different skinning of the taskbar.

I didn't realized that I had put the pictures as they were... but I didn't know how to resize them, thanks!

    and for an added bonus:

How to avoid that the palmrest becomes to hot: The problem arises when perforating just below the main fan, because now this fan only takes the air beneath it (the environment) rather than the whole laptop, and then the heat of the dGPU get's trapped in there.

    Solution?

I have never felt this cool the palmrest... even when playing, The best part? I retain exactly the same frequencies that I have been using since my two past mods... with the extreme heat that has been going nowadays in my country :D

HWingNut, May I ask to put this mod into the mod section of your llano tutorial? thanks in advance!

I plug anything capable of delivering up to 24v dc to a very nice lm7812, like this:

with this you get 12v up to 1.5A.

P.D. you can even omit the capacitors, for a fan like this they are not needed.

Wouldn't it be great if we could order something like the above without the HD, OS, memory, and optical drive?
