The laptop is compatible with SSD's. It's just a different kind of hard drive. You can put as large a hard drive or SSD you want in there, as long as its 9.5mm height.

Thanks alot! and is there a limit on hard drive capacity that it can take? for some reason crucial website is recommending a 128gb ssd can I install a 256gb? I called HP twice about this small SSD question and the first time the guy was just flat out confused and the second time HP agent was arguing that it needs a second bay to be SSD compatible does HP not know their own laptops?

It'll take any SATA drive. So yeah you can get 256gb, 512gb, whatever you want.

Summer is bad for laptop, downclocking vrams and using mediocre core OC ~~

Yeah, temps go skyrocket without mods... curiously enough, even with summer temps in my country I have been able to keep myself below 89° using my third mod, which turned out to be the most efficient of all.

Recently I picked up a used dv6-6135dx for some light on the go gaming and for the past couple of days have been reading up on all of the excellent info provided here on the forums..

I've been trying to get Battlefield 3 to run at a decent framerate, so I have a mild overclock going with k10stat and had installed camolil's BIOS (no vid card oc) to run just the 6750m. FPS was great, however the game would now cause the entire system to lock up. Sometimes after 2-4 mins, other times 10+ min range, so it seems entirely random. (Temps were all fine.)

I read that sometimes the audio drivers could be the cause of the lock ups, so I updated the realtek drivers. Everything installed fine, but upon restart I was greeted with a flashing Caps Lock key, and a HP Bios Recovery program which reverted everything back to stock F.21

Does this sort of thing happen often? Will I need to re-flash the bios on a regular basis, or was this just a fluke?

If you want to keep modded bios, rename your HP_TOOLS partition.

Unless you absolutely need fixed mode/white list removal, I would say stay away from cmolil's as the bios break RSA signed and tend to semi-brick(flashing caps lock) more.

Make sure you get the best oc out of your CPU. Below in the picture is the best overclocking I done so far. Because the lack of 120W power adapter, dont overclock above the picture below, because BF3 will have lots of frame lost. And I have it tested this setting with prime95 for 4 hours. So it is stable enough for me. And I have 6750m oc with musho bios 770/970

eugenepvd: Cheers for posting your k10stat info, I'll give that a try. It'll give me something to work from & tweak.

baiii: I did rename HP Tools before the bios flash. I changed it back after the Bios Recovery reverted back to F.21 as I wasn't sure if I'd be messing with the custom bios again.

Something just doesn't feel right after the whole Bios recovery happened.. I feel as though the 6750m isn't being utilized as much as it should. For example, Battlefield 3 is getting 12-20fps no matter which settings I apply (low-med-high-auto, all the same)

    Edit:

Installed the 12.7 beta drivers and I think performance may be back to normal or perhaps even better than before.

After the install/reboot, Battlefield 3 was still acting sluggish with low fps 12-22ish, but I decided to stick with it and climb the hill by the US base on OP Firestorm (32p Conquest) and all of sudden fps just got better and better. Sluggish game play was replaced with buttery smooth goodness 72-92fps @1366x768, low settings. (No oc on 6750) I'll bump it up to something higher next time I play. Yay!

Edit 2: Couldn't replicate fps again w/ BF3. Performance back to wonky old self. Will test more tomorrow

I was also getting bf3 lock ups after removing the fxaa injector mod but as soon as I installed it again I have not had a single freeze, these freezes seem to have happened after the patch for bf3, and you should try install the mod as well.

Rumors and speculation and BLAH. However it's still a decent graphics chip. Heretical estimations here: AMD Radeon HD 7730M - Notebookcheck.net Tech as proper numbers appear to be in short supply. I am intrigued by the notion this chip supports up to six monitors. Also the dynamic clocking nonsense.

The new dv6z has one more USB 3 now....and THOSE JERKS have again denied the lineup a freakin Displayport. It will probably still be limited to a single external monitor. Definitely a minor evolutionary design change from the previous model. Asking price is still pretty good though. $950 with maxed CPU/GPU, 1080p and backlit keyboard *without* coupons. Perhaps if we get a decent coupon it could fly off into space for about $750 or less.

Anyone running 12.6 or 12.7 have problem with freezing when changing from battery to AC vice versa?

    Just back down to 12.1.

Here is a list of bug I get with 12.6/12.7 , game does seem to run a little smoother though, also chaning to fixed mode wont had hand shutdown

1.enter windows with hdmi plug in will yield no display on internal or external, not fixable except reboot.
2.froze when switching battery/AC as mention previously
    3. hot plugging hdmi quick seem to able to froze

i had that freezing/crash problem before.

the way i fixed it is to make sure all the CCC "Power" submenu items were all activated..... from powerplay through cpu power.

fixed mode reboot hang was fixed back in 12.4.

you don't get sticky clock in fixed mode?
with newer drivers, fixed mode makes windows shake when dragging them. do you have this problem?

I'm running 12.6 and have experienced some problems with hdmi also. In my case it seems to be a conflict with my audio drivers. Pulling the *plug* during any active noise producing endeavor will freeze the system. On the other hand I only discovered this when the dog chased the cat thru the room and jerked the hdmi plug out of its jack on the side of the puter in the midst of a Skyrim dungeon melee...sooooo, my solution at this point has been to kick both of the combatants out of the room while I'm gaming heheheh.

Cheers for the 12.1a link, Quazonis. I needed those.

This 6135dx sure is a finicky beast. Each time I think I've solved a problem, another issue pops up. :p

I've figured out the problems with my erratic BF3 performance was due to an issue with my AC adapter. After trying another 120W AC adapter Battlefield 3 performance was nice and steady with framerates hovering between 45-65 @medium settings - 1366x768. I was able to play off and on throughout the day without any lockups or heat concerns and thought I was finally satisfied with this machine...

Today though is a whole different story with BF3 causing black screens and blinking Caps Lock key within the first couple of minutes of gameplay. :(

Removing 12.7 beta drivers and will try again with 12.1a's. *sigh*

That's what I was thinking as well, so I tried running the 6750m at stock speeds and it too locked up on me.

Running 12.6's now for the heck of it, and managed to play through a round of BF3 without issues.

    Edit:

Another BF3 session, another issue. I was getting random BSODs. atikmpag.sys or dxgmms1.sys errors.

Uninstalled 12.6 drivers, cleaned up with driver sweeper and went back to 12.1a. BSODs are gone, but now the darn thing reboots while in mid game. I hear the fan picking up speed, temps are alright though ranging between 62-71C, then poof...reboot. I didn't really think those temps were too high.

you need to return everything to stock voltage. You can overclock, but don't undervolt.

    then run tests.

Seconded. That sounds a little like something may be afflicting one of the overclocked CPU states, usually solved by bumping a couple voltages 1-2 notches higher.

EDIT: link626, while I somewhat disagree with your Trinity impressions I also really like your new avatar.

Doh! I didn't realize till today that my semi brick/BIOS restore reverted back to F.18 instead of F.21 like it had been running earlier. Back to F.21 now.

Cheers for the tip, I bumped up voltage a tad and so far things have been stable. Completed two rounds of BF3 without any issues. Temps were a tad higher, maxing out at 81C, but other than that I was pleased.

On a possibly unrelated note.. Event viewer has been showing constant errors for a USB\VID_138A&PID_0018 device, which I believe was the finger print reader. Updating drivers from HP's site didn't resolve the issue. Anyone else getting this too?

When adding an SSD with a caddy, is it best to put the HDD in the new caddy, or leave it where it is originally?

Any tips on setting up with the SSD? Specifically space saving, as it's only 60gb.

Personally I would put the SSD internally, and the HDD in the caddy.

For saving space a few things to consider:

    (1) Turn off hibernate if you don't use it. It will reserve the same amount of space as RAM you have. Even though that space isn't used until you hibernate it will still be unavailable to use for data.
    (2) Reduce your paging file size. I set mine with a range of 256MB to 2048MB so that it will only reserve 256MB of space but expand to 2GB if needed. Same thing applies as hibernate file, it only reserves the space it is told to even if not used, so can't be used to store data
    (3) Reduce your maximum System Restore size. This doesn't take up much room at first but by default I believe it can consume up to 10% of your disk space.
    (4) Limit your browser cache file
    (5) Delete the system updates cache. By doing this you won't be able to uninstall or rollback the installed Windows updates, but typically there is no need to do so.

Just google how to do these. I did a write up before on how to do all these things, but can't find it atm. Can post later if needed.

ESHef, main bay is faster SATA 3, optical bay SATA 2 is still plenty for mechanical HDD. Below I am responding by point to HTWingNut's writeup.

    1) Definitely do this. Hibernate is borderline useless with SSD, it sucks too much space unless you're over 200GB to start. If/when I shift RAM to 16GB I also am getting an SSD and further disabling hibernation. Anything less would be madness.

    2) In practical terms I would actually like to have pagefile disabled...or shift it to the secondary drive instead and make it large/contiguous. (8GB or so)

    3) This is practical, reduce Restore but don't disable it. Make backups occasionally.

    4) In every system I've had with more than one disk, I moved browser cache to the second disk. I try to offload as much data "churning" or "thrashing" as possible.

    5) I periodically move my NTUPDATE folders to a backup drive to free up space. Rolling back is nearly never done any way.

Best of luck with that, be sure you pay attention to the guide so those tiny clips don't get damaged when you swap the optical bay face onto the drive caddy.

Benchmark Results: GIMP : Can OpenGL And OpenCL Overhaul Your Photo Editing Experience? Seems that in some workloads, an A10-based ultrathin could be a godsend for media editing. They unfortunately did not have Trinity or Ivy Bridge numbers yet. From what I saw before, the Trinity APUs will have an even more collosal lead...but perhaps IVB can perform certain effects quickly with its iterative access to fast on-die L3 cache? Certainly it would appear that super low APU latencies would place the 7660D much closer to even the 7970 for *interactive* loads, whereas any gamer would instantly know the 7970 is superior for *independent* loads. A little shocked by the scaling on 7970 from Llano to Bulldozer FX, a bit worrying.

I just installed 12.7 beta catalyst, and it will now run opengl on the dgpu.

fixed mode graphics is no longer necessary. Switchable graphics is now seamless

also, if you insist on running fixed mode, sticky clocks are fixed too.

CCC loads up noticeably faster too
