I believe you can. I actually just recently ordered a drive caddy on ebay, and will see if I can do it. I believe I saw the instructions for how to do it in the llano overclock thread.

Could you tell me if it works when you get around to it? I couldn't find the post for the instructions.

Well, I verified that it would work, conceptually.

As I mentioned, I got one of the 12.7 mm caddies. I have a couple of spare hard drives - a 160 gb as well as the 640 gb that originally came with my dv6z. I popped the 160gb in the caddy (it had been previously reformatted). I then took out the optical drive (the drive is open when I did this) and followed the instructions from page 60-62 the HP manual (manual is here: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02842252.pdf) for removing the optical drive. It's pretty easy actually - just turn it upside down, take out the battery, pop the cover/hatch (same cover/hatch that gets you access to the memory, wireless and main hard drive), and all you have to do at that point is unscrew one screw that holds the optical drive in place.

I then tried to remove the optical bezel from the blu ray drive - described llano overclock thread at post 22 ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...v6z-llano-overclock-optimization-guide-3.html). That failed, because I couldn't get the tabs out.

But I did go ahead and install the caddy without the bezel; when I turned on the drive the hard drive (actually, drives, since the 160 gb had been previously partitioned) were viewable from my computer. So it will work.

Since I couldn't get the bezel off, I restored the blu ray drive back. If I find a cheap bezel on ebay or elsewhere that actually fits the dv6z optical drive area, I might use that one.

Hmm, temperatures in this thing are reaching >80 Celsius under light load. I've looked through the service manual, and opening it up looks simple enough to DIY. However, I wanted to see any videos of disassembling, and more importantly, reassembling this particular laptop to get more confidence before I took it apart. Any links?

Has anyone had problems upgrading to 16GB of ram. Mine is not recognizing the new ram in bios screen or in Windows. A search showed that it should take 16GB with no problem but it does not show up. It boots and runs with no problems.

6135dx with A8-3500m and 6750m. I upgraded to Windows 8, and aside from weaker speaker volumes (even with Beats driver/control panel installed), I'm now getting weaker wifi signals. The effect wasn't immediate, but after some time I started noticing lag in my online gaming. Even 480p Youtube videos actually had to buffer. Mind you we even recently upgraded to Verizon Quantum. I thought it was some interference, so I transferred the router upstairs to where my computer was. And while it was better for some time, everything started lagging again. Anyone else having weaker wifi signal after upgrading?

This is the weirdest part. I could have a tab open with a buffering Youtube video, yet my speedtest.net would show 40+Mbps download speed. And now I can't even connect to my other network. It says it successfully connects, but nothing can connect to the internet.

Edit: Nvm fixed now. Just had to restart the router again. Still have problem with weak speaker volume, don't think there's a fix for that.

Waved goodbye to my DV6 last week, it was a good machine with a rather overclockable CPU but the shoddy build quality let it down after a year.

Mine still going strong since I bought it 7/21/11. Almost been 2 years! Just repasted it with Arctic Silver last night. Waiting for it to set in before reporting my results, but already has lowered temps under full load by a couple degrees celsius over the stock thermal pads (which made a mess on the APU and GPU over the years). Only had it OC to 2.4Ghz since this January, with the 6750m OC to 750/850. Might bump it higher after the paste sets in. Have had a aluminum laptop cooler underneath it since last year, which probably helped with lifespan -_-. I actually think the build quality is pretty good tbh, haven't had any problems.

Gonna try to stick with this for another year until Kaveri laptops come out. I'm tempted to get this refurb $440 A10-4600m Trinity dv6-7229w from Groupon @

Gf needs a new laptop, so it'd be perfect for her if I could get a good one.

You know its kind of funny, but I've been looking for over a year for something to replace my dv6z with and frankly, haven't come across anything that to my mind, outperforms it enough to justify the cost. Have thought about doing the 1700-1800 dollar dance with the Sager/clevo jobs which clearly are faster, but since my dv6 is running all the games I play just fine,,,well...haven't been able to bring myself to pull the trigger. When I remember back how little I paid for this thing (if you've read the beginning of this thread you'll know) seems to me HP did a damned fine job with this box. Probably the most "bang for buck" I've come across in the comp world, which given all the years I've been fooling with these things, is saying something.

OK so this machine came with an 5200RPM drive, I've replaced that about 9 months ago due to failure with an 7200RPM drive. Now this drive or my windows installation is pretty slow. I've been using other machines and they seem pretty quick. Not sure. But I've been eyeing the Samsung 840 SSD for a while now. It's on Newegg for $175 without tax and just $2 for shipping. Not bad. Comes out to about $.76/GB if I buy an external enclosure as well for $11 to use this drive for misc items.

But I don't remember where I read this, but I know the SSD will work on my machine, but I apparently can't install Windows 7 on it via USB stick? Is that true? Optimizations for Windows 7 with a SSD, that I've been reading about and have an idea of what to do, but will I be able to install a fresh copy of Windows right on the drive via my USB stick. And also is it worth it? Yes I know there is an huge performance increase but to price/performance ratio, is it worth it? Call me frugal, but I really have to do research inorder not to have buyers remorse after 2 days of owning it.

    Thanks

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to install Win7 from USB onto the SSD. I do it all the time. Win7 will take care of correct partitioning automatically and as long as you're in AHCI mode you'll get TRIM. I even use SSDs with Vista without trouble. The extreme worrying and voodoo tweaks are mostly unnecessary.

SSDs are incredibly fast without a doubt but you could also consider one of the hybrid SSD/HDD drives like those from Seagate. They are still considerably faster than a regular HDD but you get much more capacity. I use SSDs and hybrids and honestly I have no problem with just going with a hybrid.

I thought it was pretty worth it when I did it. I don't remember how long boot times were with the 7200 RPM drive that came with it, but with my Samsung 840 series (500GB), I am able to do work in 30s flat from the time I push the power button. I was somewhat disappointed it was not lower (I was expecting the mid to low 20s), but figured it had something to do w/ HP configurations or bios...or something. Did a fresh, minimal install from recovery DVD's that I made, and yes it did seem to take forever. I bought my ssd for $320 on newegg at the beginning of the year. At the time, the 840 series had the best power efficiency, and I got about 45m to an hour of extra battery on my larger 9-cell. Programs did seem to load up faster, but this may be subjective. I did buy a USB enclosure for the 7200RPM HD and it works well.

Personally I think it was worth it. I got the 500GB cuz I wanted the capacity. Also, it had higher write speeds and better IOPS than the 250GB and the 120GB. I was also planning to migrate the SSD to whatever new laptop I may buy in the future, again leaning me towards the higher capacity. The HD wasn't loud, but audible. Now there's no noise from the new ssd. I didn't do any thermal tests, but I'm assuming it helped to lower temps by a little bit.

For you, it will depend on your personal preference. Again, I don't remember what the previous boot times were, but if a 30s boot sounds like a huge improvement and you think it's worth it, then go for it. If you need extra time away from the charger like at school or something, this will definitely help that. I did a lot of research before buying, so don't feel bad about that. Go for at least the 250GB though so you don't lose out too much on read/write speeds. I can post CDM's of my 840 500GB ssd if interested or if it will help you decide.

I have a problem: my two usb 2.0 ports (on the right side of the nb) doesn't work any more.

i tried to reinstall original HP video drivers (which also contains the usb controllers) but it has not resolved the problem.

What should I do to fix this problem?

My DV6 is long gone, but if I remember correctly, those two ports are on a small board of their own. If it's a hardware failure, you might be able to replace just that miniboard (buy a refurb on ebay), rather than the whole motherboard.

So has anyone tried an Intel 7260.hmwwb network AC card in the DX-6135dx? I was running one of the hack bios's from here to remove the whitelist but when I install it, I immediately get an error that it is an unsupported wireless device and it mentions the bluetooth portion of the card. Seems there is also a whitelist for the Bluetooth portion too... W T F HP?

Any ideas or is it even possible to run this card in this thing? Maybe an updated hacked bios to remove theBluetooth whitelist?

Thought I'd share this, it wasn't very difficult and the results were definitely worth it.

Thermal Compound Numero Dos - Imgur

Also, despite the HP service manual saying otherwise, the GPU definitely had thermal compound and not a thermal pad on it.

I got my dv6-6135dx on the very same day it was released, $699 for all the stuff packed in there was just too good of a deal to pass up, and the only reason I got it was because on that very same day my old laptop went kaput. One of the best outcomes to a bad (or even good for that matter) situation I've ever had!

Some things I do want to share:
The VRAM chips in there were not Samsung like HTWingNut found in his, but they were definitely GDDR5 still. I plan on getting some copper from the art department at school to cover up the VRAM and then attach to the heatpipe on the heatsink to get some additional cooling to them, and then borrowing my dad's Dremel to add some extra ventilation underneath the fan like some other people have done. I did remove the stick-on vent cover things that were basically suffocating the ventilation underneath the heatsink blocks as well, and got some tape crap out of the way of the fan's intake and exhaust vents which seems to have helped too.

    Hello,

I have a DV6-6040sf, and i have mistake with my ssd (hard drive error 3F1), i think with advanced bios i can solve my problem, for exemple to disable smart.

    - Does the musho's or camoli's custum bios works with my dv6?
    - does they activate advanced option?

    Thanks!

the "sp54274" should be the one, however I don't think that one has the permanent GPU OC.

I think I am now starting to have this problem as well. The back right USB port tends to crash my computer, so I pretty much am limited to the usb 3.0 ports and the front right usb port. Since I only use one port, I've ignored the problem.

Additionally, the wireless is very flaky now.

Wow, this thread is still alive!

I've been barely using mine because it just feels so slow. The fan died once awhile ago and I had it sent in, they replaced the ram at the same time too ( I don't know why)

My hard drive completely died the other day, and I put in an old 120gb ssd, and the thing just still feels slow sometimes. My battery stopped getting a charge, so I just took that out.

Also, any game I try to run makes my temps shoot up to 85C. I have combatted this by underclocking and undervolting when I play some games, but then it just gets slow and I can't stand it.

I have some left over arctic silver hanging around, would it be worth it to repaste this beast, or should I not bother?

Are these old dinosaurs even worth anything for resale, or should I just toss it in the closet and forget this laptop relationship ever happened?

Sorry, I just really needed to vent. Haha

Yup Still running strong here. I actually updated a few things on this computer pretty much maxing it out. I got angry one day because the net was so low and hit the computer pretty much killing the hard drive. I took the opportunity to upgrade. Went from the lousy 1366 * 768 to full 1920 *1080 screen (what a difference BTW!), got 2 hard drives. One a 7200rpm 500GB drive and a 120GB samsung evo SSD. Put the SSD as my main drive and the 500GB drive in the blu-ray slow (no longer have a disc drive slot). Went ahead and changed the color from the grey to the coffee color and places an aftermarket grey keyboard that matches the speaker grill and borders. I also placed windows 8.

*first windows 8 runs smoothly but I feel both my GPUs are slower than what they were on windows 7 due to driver issues and board compatibility.
*If i put the computer to sleep twice, after the second time, it just locks up and only way to get it going, it by force restarting it
    * and some other things here and there.
    * I do have one of the best SSD's in this computer but I still feel like the computer boots up too slow. (fast than HDD but not as fast as ive seen intel computers boot up.

this is my only laptop so i do use this pretty often. havent had battery problems, heating problems or anything like that.

So im still rocking the computer. works good and all but this is my first and last AMD computer. Also, i stopped playing games so video cards are no longer my priority. Will be upgrading in the next 2-4 years

Looking for a 4k display laptop for $500 :D I guess the wait continues...

Update: Still running my dv6z, just upgraded to catalyst 14.4. No major improvements, but so far I have not had any crashes since the driver update. USB error message still comes up nearly ever time I turn on the system.

I'll be switching over to a clevo 13.3 with the 860m hopefully soon, but I will keep playing around with the dv6z. Since my model came with a Blu-ray and my blu ray player is busted, I might just use my dv6z laptop as an htpc instead of actually building an htpc.

I have an odd request. My laptop's display has been dead, and I've been using it with a monitor for some time now. However, recently, when cleaning out the dust, I accidentally removed CMOS battery, resetting the BIOS settings. As a result, my hardware virtualization has been disabled. Could someone post pictures of the exact steps needed to re-enable the hardware virtualization BIOS setting on this machine so that I can follow it without a display?

I can probably dig them out but there is not much point using them tbh as you can just software OC.

Ok, so i just went ahead and upgraded my dv6-6135dx myself to windows 10, since my dv6z was just collecting dust. Hard part was getting some windows 7 updates properly installed so that i could reserve my win 10 upgrade - i ended up deleting and reinstalling 2 different windows 7 kb update files in order to get the icon working. Once that was done, clicked the link and reserved my update, and installed it yeterday. I kepted all my programs and settings.

Good news: my computer is quite a bit more stable. It still hangs every now and then, but recovers instead of needing a battery pull. Edge is nice. Total space used is about 77 GiB (of my 111 GiB drive which is a 120GB OCZ agility 3), and that includes a bunch of small games and office 2010.

Bad news: powerdvd 10 (i had a bluray model) seems broken. The program turns on, and i was able to update it, but it freezes when i try to play a blu-ray. It does play dvds, so some things are still working, but not the blu ray playing function.

Im using the latest catalyst driver for win10, I think. Will check again when I get home.

There's nothing special about the driver, since support for llano and other vliw5 era gpus is essentially over. It works for me but i did not notice any performance improvement.

Btw, I am using the HP stock bios, not the modified bios. I am not familiar with the modified bios and am not sure they're compatible with Win10.

So, reading from two different threads. Did anyone get their A8-3500M upgrade to work properly? I was going upgrade my inlaw's laptop w/a SSD, gaming SSHD, and RAM. But if the CPU can be upgraded as well, that would be sweet.
