Sorry for the double post, but wasn't sure how to edit with a multi-quote.
In regards to the screen, do you need the different cable just when you purchase that particular screen (in rmacgowa's quote)? If you buy one with the HP part numbers I got from the manual, is it the same connector?

I received my refurbed dv6z last week but I am a bit concerned about its functionality since when my laptop is in use (roughly every 10 minutes) it makes a short noise. The noise sounds similar to the noise right after pressing the CD-tray open button, however there are no disks in the tray and I am not pressing the button.
Thinking it might be a hard drive problem I was suggested to run the HP disk check diagnostic and nothing came up as abnormal. Any ideas on what could be the problem and how to get it fixed?
Thanks. -
Radeon 12.1 preview drivers botch up any crossfire in Battlefield 3. I am getting worse performance and stutters. I find the best performance at 1280x720 on my 1080p screen with 2xAA runs ~ 45 fps. Otherwise 1080p runs 25-40 fps.

You need a new cable if you want FHD screen, either from HP parts or Alinc. Both are same, but I think the one from HP is more expensive.
I do believe 656805-001 is the right cable part base on what I read.
For the LCD panel, there are a few of them that works. There is a thread on dv6 screen mod but I dont have it right now.

The HP_TOOLS is a hidden partition, I am not sure if you can view it though windows computer management(probably can?) cause i did clean install on SSD. -
keep your fingers crossed, sometimes they show up earlier than expected
seer -
I hope so! But I'm doubtful because it's Christmas time; I bet they have TONS of computers to build.
-
Does anyone know if there's a modded BIOS that removes the whitelist only, and is otherwise stock? Can we get one?
-
I remember to have seen one here, way back though...
-
my fusion tweaker is messed up (show up like that when click on service)
Don't know how to fix ~~ -
Make a backup and WIPE Fusiontweaker out of your system. Probably bad registry entries hiding somewhere.
-
OK, thanks baiii. Bummer on the needed expensive cable. How do I find the hidden HP Tools to rename it?
Also, just out of curiosity, do we know if the Trinity chips will be compatible with this motherboard? Awesome if we could upgrade to that later!

Any 1 have a problem with caddy HDD keep on spinning even though it is not used? It keep spinning even i turn the power off in BIOS ~~
edit :The problem is not that it is spinning, it just louder then wat I usually have. -
Two questions to you guys:
1) Has anyone noticed that their laptop seems to run hotter after it's resumed from sleep? Maybe it's just my imagination.
2) Has anyone noticed choppy or laggy scrolling in web browsers? It seems like IE9 is the only one that doesn't have lag when I scroll on certain sites. I am thinking it might have something to do with graphics acceleration, but I can't quite put my finger on it. -
What do you exactly mean with being messed up? You can delete all registry entries for now, if your undervolting settings are making the system instable.
Remove everything under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\FusionTweaker. That makes it start from scratch.
I ran the tool on different machines and it was always working without issues. One thing to mention is, that you shouldn't use multiple tools to control the PStates, since they will disturb each other.
If you want to use FusionTweaker, start using it for the undervolt part initially only. Don't activate Custom C&Q, since this is not needed. It's kind of an add-on, if you really know, what you are doing and not satisfied with how Windows is controlling the PStates.
Let me know, if you need more details or explanations.
-witteks -
I deactivated C&Q in my bios as mentioned in FusionTweaker, and tried to use the service options, but they were still locked. Did i missed something? Or how can i use the manual pstate control?
-
First, you need to hit "Update" , then check the "Make permanent" box and click on "Apply". This activates the service in general. I hope, this solves your problem with locked options.
Some general hints:
You only want to do this tweaking, if you checked each pstates voltage for stability.
Assuming you have done this, the question is, if you really want to activate Custom C&Q. That is really only needed, if you want to tweak, how the processor steps through the different pstates, but Windows 7 is doing a decent job. If you are not certain, what you do in detail, leave the Custom C&Q unchecked.
Many things can be tuned with the Power options of Windows, where you can also limit certain Pstates for the different Power profiles to save battery or keep the processor in the lowest PState (highest performance).
My experience so far tells me, that some users do too much undervolting and don't test thoroughly enough, though getting BSOD's later on.
I'd recommend focus on the undervolting part, test it a lot, put some margin on top, set the service permanently and forget about the tool.
If you really want to do more specific things and you are not satisfied with Win7 Pstate switching, you can try around with Custom C&Q.
Hope that helps,

I prefer K10Stat over Fusion Tweaker. K10Stat seems more straight forward to me, and I like the interface. Could never get FT to work properly for me either.
-
I've been doing some more testing, and I'm wondering once again if someone can give me an idea of if I should be wary on these temps: I first tested in the default voltages (1.5 ghz) and temps stood steady around 71-72 C. At 2.4 ghz with voltages set at 1.0875, I'm seeing a raise to about 81-82 C. This is an improvement over the previous voltage attempts (1.1750 / 1.1125) which had them sitting at 86 C / 84 C respectively.
Does this sound in line with what other users have experienced prior to a repaste? Or, at 81/82, am I still running too hot? These are based on Prime95 torture tests, so I'm not sure if more intensive tasks will put them higher or slightly lower (as I understand, Prime95 does everything it can to stress the system, so perhaps I could expect lower..). -
It is not hidden, that partition just dose not come with an assigned letter by default. To assign a letter to rename:
start>right click on computer>manage>disk management>
Disk 0> partition: HP Tools>right click>change drive letter and paths
Assisgn a letter then it will appear in "Computer" under hard disk drives.
Right click it and hit rename. Just alter it in anyway. I named my "RN HP_TOOLS" all i did was add RN and a space so i know to delete RN so i can restore how it was after i flash my bios. -

Your temps seem a little high, probably an even worse than normal paste job by HP. -
I was worried about that. Think I should probably clock it a little lower?
-
If you feel up to you and are very careful, I'd open the laptop up and repaste the CPU and GPU.
I don't see a point in downclocking if you need the extra performance and can lower your temps by repasting it.
Note: If you decide to repaste, I hold no responsibility if anything happens. -
Yeah.. I'd rather hold off on repasting it. I know it seems silly to some here, probably, but I'd like to refrain: Should be ok as long as I'm using a cooler; I mean are these 'slightly high' or 'dangerously high' on temps?
-
imho if you can keep it under 82 or 83 you're doing ok. It's when you see it coming up towards 90 that you need to really back down.
btw, I'm in agreement with Wing, I think there is a youtube vid on disassembling this thing. I suspect a re-paste is in your future.
seer -
Re: 1, if you are overclocking, when the box resumes from sleep for some reason, the graphics card is triggered to run up to 99 percent usage. I always have to re-run gpuz to unlock the 99 percent thing then it returns to normal usage and temps.
seer -
guys i need help i think i have a corrupted bios what do i do
-
This actually sound right for stock paste. My 2.2Ghz @1.05 got to around 80, Add GPU on top of that and I can see 85. It should be fine for normal use, and 80 is not killing temp for lappys any how.
--------------------------------------------
For my fusion tweaker , I just do a clean install again -.- Havent start using it anyways.
This time I going to keep system restore on until I done all the driver and setting .
The one thing that is nice about fusiontweaker(If it works) is that when you have custom CnQ, It change your powerplan at same time. For balanced I would make it not use boost (P1-P7) for instance. For high performance i can make it p0-p4. Probably gonna try toy with windows one if fusiontweaker custom is buggy . -
Repaste wont cant really possible "hurt" your laptop.
Worst is you lose some screw and break some of the plastic thingy that hold the laptop together. -
If you doubt the strength of your "skillz", use a non-conductive paste. No Arctic Silver if you're afraid of overapplication.
-
I love how helpful everyone here is (NOT sarcasm at all!).
Calc hit it: Mostly worried about screwing up something, but I went through the same thing when I was building my desktop some years back.
When you say 'normal' use, could you a bit more specific? Normal idle temps seem fine, I imagine it'd reach those posted temps on gaming or such..but I plan to invest in a good cooler first (if anyone has recommendations for that, too, I'd be much obliged) -
Hmm... don't know for sure. But I had a similar problem back when I tested different catalysts. The problem for me was afterburner trying to set gpu speeds of a certain profile, while these speeds were allready running. Most of the time that led to a bluescreen/grayscreen. But sometime everything went normal.
So you may want to try uninstalling your afterburner just to check out if thats the problem. -
Here's what $720.99 (plus tax) will get you right now at HP.com (with code NBT3886):

1GB GDDR5 Radeon(TM) HD 6750M Graphics [HDMI, VGA]
FREE UPGRADE to 6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
FREE UPGRADE to 640GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (standard)

Blu-ray player & SuperMulti DVD burner
HP TrueVision HD Webcam with Integrated Digital Microphone and HP SimplePass Fingerprint Reader
802.11b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth(R)
Standard Keyboard with numeric keypad
Their price for the 8GB upgrade isn't worth it when you can do it for less than $20, and nobody should ever pay their prices for an SSD (which isn't an available option for this model anyway.) -
BUH
I reset to stock speeds and voltages, and ran my Prime95-stress-LargeFFT on the a8-3500 PROPERLY. Result?
Temperature peaked at 64C, then settled at 62-ish for the rest of the duration. I double checked my CPU settings, double checked Coolsense was set at Performance, etc.
Isn't this rather low? And I haven't repasted or done any cooling mods. Then again, at stock settings I am running Shogun 2 on Ultra everything (MLAA not MSAA tho), and that lands from 72-75C over a 6hr weekend session.
I need to go over my clocks again. -
Also; any suggestions on a good wireless card? I normally don't notice it as much, but this one feels slow even by my standards.. not sure what that whole whitelist thing is..
Also, huh, Calc.. that's kind of odd. -
abaddon4180 Notebook Virtuoso
65C or so sounds pretty normal for stock settings.
-
OK, thanks! I'll get to all this as soon as I'm off work again (Christmas Eve).
edit: OK, just renamed it. Will flash new bios later! Thanks again!
-
Man, advanced bios bricked again. I was only changing "Fans Always On".
I dun get it ... -
abaddon: If you say so. It really shows how much crazy amounts of headroom this has when compared to i series. I was also pleasantly surprised when I enabled hardware-assisted decode in VLC. Playing a fairly intensive 1080p file, I went from stressing one core to....0%(!) CPU for the VLC process. So I messed around, turns out I can run two 1080p streams simultaneously through the hardware assist. AMD System Monitor showed two CPUs loaded ~10% each, and iGPU loaded 30%. I think the limit is RAM bandwidth, if I could use the 6750M it could possibly manage FOUR 1080p streams.
And best of all the temps never budged when using hardware assist. I could downclock into the basement and still have laser smooth .mkv playback. -
OK so i decide to try do some clock control with WIN7
below is what I got
Power plan-advanced power option professorial pwer mgr --> min/max (Sry I hate typing)
% P-state
1-53 p6
54-60 p5
61-66 p4
67-73 p3
74-80 p2
81-99 p1
100 p0
Win7 does do solid control, but I dun know if I can change up/down in registry
My clocks are( No repaste yet, so struck for 2200 ~~)
2400
2200
2100
1700
1400
1100
900
600
Anyways, I am happy now, min/max stat is all I care . No sleep , startup problems compare to program
edit: just notice i probably need to use fusion tweaker to set it permeant or can use k10stat just load profile -
How does the A8 APU and the 6750M do against a i7 with 6770M gaming wise? I was hoping better because the word on the street is that AMD has really stepped up on its driver support.
-
Probably worse. The CPU is a lot worse (even when OC'd) and the GPU is worse as well. If both the 6750m and 6770m are OC'd, then the 6770m is still ahead by ~15%.
I don't even bother with dual graphics, the stuttering is still horrible for me even with 11.11c.
But the thing about the AMD build is it probably costs like $200 less. -
Thats why I always say get intel for 700+ ( But 700 probably cant get i7)
You get much better all around support/easier life compare to AMD.
Sata Driver ( I would say much superior ~~, you need to hunt to find amd updated chipset drivers.........)
ThrottleStop (Much more use friendly /Developed)
Intel support for programming
But the $200 is real bargain
, and if all you do is game and geek then AMD is superior .
-
The Intel soltution will be faster in DX9 games, the A8+6750M will be faster in DX10/11.
-
hey guys, i wanted to have my dad get me a refurbished HP Pavilion dv6-6135dx for christmas, and he was going to order it at the end of this week, was looking at tigerdirect, but now they say not availible.. Any other good online retailers to get a refurbished model from? Or do you guys think i should start looking at another model? i was mainly interested in it as a budget gaming laptop (my first laptop in general) that i can tinker with (it would be my first amd, as my desktop is older intel core2duo watercooled/overclocked, so i love tinkering with stuff)
-
The only place that I could find that still has it in stock is Overstock.com. Unfortunately it won't be for the $499.99, they have it for $542.99. Sorry to hear that they are selling out now, I wish you the best of luck.
-
Newegg is all done aswell, still have 20+ like 2 days ago. No idea why.
-
Only under the condition crossfire works though, which is still not 90+% .
-
Guys it is now back in stock at tiger and newegg. tiger is your best bet as they are oeffering free shipping and i got mines for 500 flat
Any of you guys got dxva working? im trying to get it to work with coreavc but it still stays in software mode. I use cccp+coreavc. Software rending is still powerful enough but i would like to use dxva to keep the load off of cpu. the APU is dxva capable when using dxva checker.
Also does anyone know whaat
ACPI\AFD0001
*AFD0001 as hardware Ids is?
Theres not to much info on it. -
For all you guys making ridiculous statements about 1080p at 15.6: You have no idea what your talking about. Pixel pitch is awesome and everything is not to small. I have horribaal eye sight and can read this text about 2'.5 (feet) away from the screen.Your eyes and the screen are only about 14inches apart making it awesome. Also viewing angles on stock dv6-6135dx is f**king terrible! The color is bad its just wack. Check out comparison between stock and matte 1080p replacement i installed:
Both screen at full brightness. blacks on the original screen is not black at all! camera is fooling us!
