I agree completely.
I have a DV6t with 1080p and DV6z with 768p right in front of me. I'm setting them up for my dad and niece. The 1080p is clearly a superior screen and it is crisp, bright, dark blacks, and nothing is "too tiny" to read. It looks phenomenal.
-
I tried DXVA with pot player/mpc-hc , seem fine to me.
But ffdshow/madVr too good to pass over.
Actually, I just test something maybe better. DXVA + Reclock + SVP + AMD graphic card to render. Can get 60fps 1080p.
edit : let me try coreavc , is it a renderer or decoder or everything?
I dun know, I dun think I get either mpc or pot player to use the coreavc decoder ...
edit2 I got it to run but no DXVA, just use stock DXVA xD
Now i set 1 up with DXVA for 60fps video. DXVA with madvr drop alot of frame for me .
and 1 for madvr software decode -
Come on guys stop of being like this, giving complete missinformation.
To begin with the CPU is not a lot worse, according to some bench if the CPU is overclocked it manages to pass an I5, if it's overclocked in a bit extreme way it can stay around I5<->I7 Performance but not "A LOT WORSE"
Second the GPU, the difference are clock speeds for the 6770m and 6750m, I think 6770m stays at 720 core or something like that, right now I'm at 770 and the games run like hell better
BTW this laptop can do modeling (Catia, Solidworks) quite easily, so please next time don't go claiming that intel is infinitely better, when it's not. Truth be told, they still are quite better at "Crunching Numbers"... be Super Pi.
xFire do work on games that are mostly Direct X11, but Skyrim actually behaves quite well with it and it's supposedly an DirectX9 game, awesome game by the way... if a problem arises with the xFire, it can be always be turned off and only have the dedicated graphics working, but in my case that I've tested quite a lot of games I still have to see really negative scaling, because so far my experience has been really good.
BTW. This is not a noob laptop, anybody who wants to unlock its full performance should stay a bit of time experimenting the limits of both their processor and dGPU, they are different for everybody. -
coreavc is a decoder but if you got it working with ffdshow i might aswell uninstall and just use ccp with its included ffdshow. How can you tell if its running correctly? other than just the spu usage. I liked the little icon that used to turn red XP It turns green when decoding with cuda but thats for nvidia only.(duh

Alright! After some reading and testing if you "DO A REPASTE" i would have to say that 2.4ghz should be the settings to clock your b0 or p0 (since i cant find a way to lock b state)
2400mhz with FID: 8 DID: 0 @ 1.0875v Sure you can go ahead and aim lower which i tried on 2 different laptops but i think this is it! 1.0750v you can get away with but most tutorials say once you find a stable clock move 2 up for headroom. 1.0875 is pushing for 2400mhz and its rock solid.doing a stress test reached a max of 83 for a few breif seconds (got to adjust fan settings) it smoothed out at 71-75 the rest of the way. When running prime95 along with msi kombustor xfire enabled, i reach 90-93. These temperatures are never reached in real world performance, even gaming as i know no game that will eat 100 percent of cpu and both gpus. When i game on battlefield3 i dont even hit 80 but im close!
Time to figure out all of my 7 P states and how to devide em. This laptop really does kick for only 500 bucks its a giveaway. I know i probly shouldn't but im going to try a washer and screw mod later after i paint my dv6-6135dx for added pressure enabling more heat transfer. -
On pot player/mpc, I check the OSD or right click and I think it show on one of the option.
Got so much GPU bandwidth but HD playback cant use . -
WHat? why not?
-
? Cause HD playback are still mostly CPU work. DXVA doesnt put everything on GPU.
-
Hi guys,
I got my wife the Newegg Refurb DV6-6135DX and read a few hundred pages of this thread. Thanks to everyone for all the wonderful info posted here! -
This looks exciting.
AMD A-Series unlocked APUs revealed plus new dual/quadcores - SlashGear
stoked. -
Definitely like seeing the popularity of AMD on the rise again, but I'm going to wait for Trinity. By then, the Bulldozer patches should be out, and the GPU will be from the 7xxx sseries.
-
do you guys have any suggestion to what would be the next best thing to the dv6-6135dx? If i cant find an online retailer for my dad to order though, maybe get a different model perhaps
-
My first recommendation is the dv6 configuration I posted earlier in this thread. The HP discount code makes it worthwhile.
-
newegg and tiger is in stock! read damn it now hurry!
-
well your cpu usage can go down form around 20 to 1 or 2 percent. most def less than 5
-
Probably i have too much filter going at same time .
-
What filters?
Sldo whats the lowest and most stable voltage you guys getting for 2.5ghz? im going to make that my boost if i can keep temps down. -
thanks, i tried your configuration and total with tax would be 782.87.. Since my dad is out of state and would order it for me ship it to me, i wonder if it would still have that high california tax? hmm lol
But otherwise, beside the 1080 monitor, probably not much performance difference between a 6135dx -
You will love the dv6-6135dx. Get it. The amount of fun tuning it. I just cant believe i got this for only 500 bucks it drives me crazy i catch my self stairing at it while stress tesing. i stress test during my job and come back to it, sit down and gaze at it lol
-
Tax is determined by where the item is shipped to. Plug in different zip codes and see for yourself!
The reason behind my configuration is to get a machine that equals or exceeds the dv6-6135dx in order to make the $999 cutoff where the coupon applies. You can get the stripped-down model, ($529), but if you add even a couple of things (say, a full cpu upgrade and a blu-ray drive for a total of $175 more, for a total of $704), you start getting really close to to the $720.99 price of the deluxe upgrade with coupon. -
AMD Llano APU vs Intel Sandy Bridge laptop - YouTube
I feel that this accurately describes the advantages of an A8 vs and i7 and the disadvantages as well.
Obviously the i7 is better when it came to processing power at first, but as they added more the A8 really seemed to take the ball out of Intel's court.
Of course this has to do a lot with the GPU in AMD's APU but doesn't this possibly put down a lot of accusations that the i5 and i7 are TONS better than AMD's APU line? I think so... -
Agreed. It all depends on what you use your computer for and what best matches your needs.
-
How to get DXVA working in windows:
Download The Combined Community Codec Pack
CCCP - Combined Community Codec Pack
Install and do not check/un-check of the settings.
Start>All Programs>Combined Community Codec Pack>FFDShow>ffdshow video decoder configuration
In the Codecs Tab on the left:
-Change h.264/AVC decoder to disabled(original is libavcodec)
Apply/ok and close
Start>All Programs>Combined Community Codec Pack>FFDShow>ffdshow dxva video decoder configuration
In DirectShow Control tab
-slide merit all the way to the right (very high)
In the Hardware acceleration tab
-check/enable H264 and VC1
Compatibility mode: normal
post processing: surface overlay (for subtitles)
Check the subtitles tab and Make sure the category Enabled formats is all checked.
Test and enjoy.
Within Windows Media Player windows shall now use its built in dxva which is the easiest on cpu due to lack of post processing for subtitles. Media Player Classic should know have an icon from ffdshow dxva when playing h264 and you can see the gpu being used and then cpu less than 10.
Make sure to "Configure Switchable Graphics in the vision control center and set both wmplayer.exe and mpc-hc.exe to "Power-Saving" No need for xfire to kick in and waste battery in this beast!(which you can see the 6750m clocked up in gpu-z when you play a video) -
No. Just shows me the Intel HD3000 blows. I love my laptop but I'd take an i7 over my a8 any day given the same power video card.
-
I was looking at what it would take to upgrade my dv6-6135dx to 16GB, and found something interesting:
HP's price as an upgrade from 6GB on a DV6, $460.00.
@ Newegg, the least expensive 16GB (2x8 DDR3 1333) for a laptop is $169.99.
(In comparison, @ Newegg, for a desktop (2x8 DDR3 1333), the price (after rebate) is $84.99.)
Excuse me?
Hmmm...based upon articles I've found, and since I don't use photoshop...8GB will do just fine. -
The A8 is the best mobile processor for the money. For the average user it would fufill everyones needs. I use to be an Intel fanboy until i realised what im geting for my money starting with the 50 dollar AM3 Phenoms which can over clock to 4ghz no problem. Anyways . . . . . A8-3500m owns for its overclocking capability but you have to know what your doing to get the most out of it so like always, Intel will always win.
-
I'm not saying the A8 is better, which it obviously isn't and never will be. However, I'm trying to put down the comments that say an i7 blows it out of the water when it comes to raw processing power.
It isn't that far behind the i7 when it comes to real world apps, and as far as the price goes, I feel it has the better margin over the i7 in price/performance which AMD has always been best at.
Maybe, just maybe someday AMD will make a chip faster than Intel's at a lower price.
That seems like a far stretch though lol.
-
Don't want to turn this into AMD vs Intel. Check the benchmark scores (e.g. cinebench, 3dmark11) if you don't believe that an i7 is a lot faster (even when adjusted for OC). Same for 6770m vs 6750m (though I didn't say the 6770m is a lot faster, just faster).
-
@geant90
Can just use mpc or pot player, they have build in DXVA.
My Dxva work just fine, but when madVR doesnt support it , It become my secondary solution.
-----------------------------------------------------------
tempted to get 1080p Screen, thinking I may sell the old screen for 30(possible?) Then it become a cheap upgrade ~~ -
Well, they already did it before in the past, but AMD needs to get their act together if they want to do it again in the future.
-
Well, I only read the last 100 pages of this forum, and well, I really appreciate all of your helps!!
Especially the few who have gone my route with the upgrades.
But, I have some questions and want to pump some energy back into this forum so here goes!
First, did min recovery. (AWESOME for HP to do this!!!) (HP actually did several things to make this machine nerd friendly, good for them!)
Updates from HP, then updates from AMD, all of them,,
and then
A)
(this next step is purely if you intend to test your gpu)
then I went into device manager and kept uninstalling current driver until none,, then let windows update install the known good base it found.
then used kombuster to test freqs that correspended with the mod bios from musho (link nearish page 330)
after I found 770 970 worked I flashed the bios
and then made went and redid AMD drivers.
I have yet to download the CAP profiles, (will try but in middle of this beautiful material im writing, tho it may answer some q's i know)
in addition, I actually did this next step first,
so I seem to have a "good one" as I have yet to replace thermal material and without trying to max it out,
KSTAT10
B0 2.6 1.1875
P0 2.4 1.1125
P1 1.9 1.0
P2 1.5 .9875
P3 1.2 .95
P4 1.0 .925
P5 .9 .9125
P6 .8 .9
Have not spent the time to see if I could go higher but 30 minutes prime this was fine as well as 1 hour of BF3 (my prime) temps never got over mid 70C
This is even with the modded 770 970 gpu bios.
Before I continue with questions I want to explain what I do when I start my computer to see if I ever went wrong.
I turn it on, GPU is oc'd thru bios,, so I first launch Kstat10, then enable clock control by finding icon in bottom right, right clicking , and clicking yet again in an appropriate fashion
Then I launch speedfan, cpu-z to look at temps and speeds.
Also, I am using an OCZ 60GB Solid SSD
I have upgraded the RAM to CL9 2x4gb 1600mhz which wont be utilized till apu upgrade.
I have the parts, but have yet to upgrade the lcd, as wanted to wait till I bought the 3530mx or 3550mx in the next month, so Id do it all, real perfect like, at once without having to keep reopening this lovely unit.
So far, I have yet to bluescreen, or get any artifacts in any scenario, and I mostly do everything on this laptop. I have never seen the temps hit 80C ever. 78 I think once.
So where are my problems???
well, I bought this laptop because it seems to be a desktop replacer. I am going from a Ph II x6 2.8 with crossfired 5750s to this which let me BF2 on max settings,, so it is a slight downgrade, but right now I can play BF3 on 1080p at low settings with almost no stutter.
Problem is BF3 shuts down the first cpl of attempts it loads,
like it is stressing out then "game disconnected: something went wrong"
so it takes me a couple of tries to start it.
Also, what is the purpose of enabling k10stat clock control, what does it do? is it useful for BF3?
HTWINGNUT!!!
please tell me your current GPU OC, how you did it if different, and your current k10Stat Pstates, as well as what you do when you start up, and how you set things to be great for BF3.
In general, is gaming better with great graphics at low res, or low graphics at hi res?
Also, I purchased a Corsair 90GB Force 3 SSD to replace my current SSD and it does not recognize in boot? it does via usb3 in windows, and boots up from my desktop.. I have heard other people with 60GB versions of same working in this unit,, what is the deal?
I am also waiting on the bluetooth wifi 6230 for that extra neccesity.
What other upgrades can I do to this, this thing is way more impressive than I thought and Im an AMD fanboy for the most part.
How can I get BF3 even better? -
zz double post
Eh, i Just edit this
@H203
I am so jealous, v1.1875 with stock paste?
Usually when your 3d program crash(6750m) , probably your GPU clock is too high, try drop it back one step. -
The i7 vs the a8? Price comparisons please. I returned my Core i3/HD 3000 Dell Inspiron for the 6135dx because it was cheaper...There is absolutely no comparison between the two. Dead slow vs. Fast as hell. If I could afford an i7 with a 6750/70m, I might take a look, but I'd need help in finding one for $499.
I thought I'd post this.
AMD Announce New APU's
I'd be interested in an a8-3550 if it would work in this notebook, although I'm not sure of the exact specs of the GPU yet. Clark, what do you think of doing this instead of the panel upgrade? Is the price to performance ratio to your liking?
. You talked me out of the panel(quite easily)...is your argument as strong here?
I also haven't researched trinity yet, but I'm thinking it's not plug-n-play, so to speak. FM1 vs. FM2 on the desktops? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but if this is the case. Then the upgrade path for these llanos just ended at the a8-3550?
Best,
Liquid Cool -
I really don't get why it is such a big deal to admit that the Intel chips are currently better. They are get over it. Bang for the laptop gaming buck makes the A8 especially the refurb dv6-6135dx kick butt but it ain't no i7 killer. It is a Intel HD3000 killer though. I always use to be an anti-intel guy hell I even owned Cyrix cpu at one point but once the core 2 duo came out I switched from AMD to Intel, bang for the buck. When I do upgrade my core 2 duo desktop here soon I'll probably go AMD again but it sure as hell won't be because they have the best CPU. It will be because they have a good enough CPU that is much cheaper than an I5 and I can put that extra money in the GPU which is all that really matters for me. Kind of like my A8 laptop.

Much like many of the people here, I have been stalking these threads for a long time. I've read up on every page, I think it took me 11 hours from beginning to end. I saved important information and guides in the form of 41 e-mails to myself. This has been quite the thread!
Kudo's to Wingnut , Seer, Rmac, and of course Musho.
I may create a post that combines all the most useful guides and information found on all ~404 threads to make the transition easier for those new to this monster thread.
Today I joined the game with the NewEgg Refurb: Dv6 6135 DX
Everything seems to be functional, and from what I know, HWinfo64should be showing me clock speeds and temperature for my 6750 as long as I've primed the system by using high performance switchable graphics on another program before I activate HWinfo64.
I tried CPU-Z first then HWinfo64 in sensor mode only as well as regular but it still only recognizes the integrated graphics on the die. I'm assuming I need to use a more resource dependent program in order to see what temps / clock speeds my 6750m are showing, but i'm not sure.
Aside from that, there are a few things running through my mind:
-MSI Kombuster
-MSI After Burner
- P-States
- Power Options (Performance mode vs HP Recommended)
- Cool sense (set to performance mode)
- Crossfire disabled
- May do a repaste with AS5 or Diamond
I'm just wondering the best possible way to monitor:
- Heat
- Clock Speeds
Other than that I think there are plenty of guides provided that I can toy with, but one step at a time.
I hope to contribute something great in the future, if only a rehash conveniently organized. -
need gpu-z or kombustor to prime. Hwinfo should show everything you need nicely
-
does a reapplication of good thermal paste benefit alot with the 6135dx and overclocking? Im down to tinker and i still got alot of silver paste from a few years ago
-
LC,
The best way to explain...it all depends on what you want or feel you need. As far as a processor upgrade to the notebook you already have? You'll have to wait for HP to produce a BIOS that will handle it, so you can buy one when they come out and wait for the BIOS update to be available. According to what I read....A8-3550 looks to be the end of the line for llano/sabine. Trinity will work the same way as an APU, only built with better, faster, stronger stuff.
I'm not going to do this, though. It just wouldn't net me a significant gain for my usage.
I bought my refurbie to fill in for my mammoth of a laptop that I am tired of lugging around. The dv6 works for my use just fine, so the only upgrades I will be making are these:
1) A SATA III SSD drive...this will rock performance more than any other upgrade. No waiting for a 5400rpm drive to load. (I've got SATA II's in my HTPCs and they're great!) Besides, an SSD travels well.
2) Replacing the 2GB memory stick with a 4GB, because it's the next performance-maker that's cheap and easy too. (I don't do Photoshop, and that's just about the only app that really benefits from 16GB...but even if I did do PS, then my SSD would make a lot of difference there and wouldn't need 16GB anyway. Almost every other app in the world requires no more than 4GB anyway.) I DO, however, write code, and it's nice to run a statistical program requiring thousands to millions of iterations as quickly as possible.
3) Adding a bluetooth button for my bluetooth mouse. Again...cheaper and easier than replacing the wireless card.
4) Windows 7 Ultimate...because I have a spare copy.
Bear in mind...this laptop's really only for travel, is easy to lug around, and does well as an HTPC as well, connected to the hotel flatscreen, while I can still check my email, program, surf, etc.
When Trinity comes out, I'm buying the biggest-screen-version as a desktop replacement for home. I'm done building home machines now that notebooks are as powerful as I need them to be.
I don't benchmark as a hobby, I don't do graphic work, nor do I game to the level that so many do.
I just bought something that, with a few minor mods, does more than everything I need.
(By the way, if you're following the thread, the main argument for replacing the screen is about better quality, viewing angle, etc, and not pixels. No argument on this end (because they're all valid reasons), because certainly there are better quality screens than stock, even at the same resolution. Doubtful HP would have spent more than the minimum making this 1366x768 at stock. Again, for me, it's not worth it to upgrade for detail I can't see [or really care about], but that's my personal taste...my goal was to put the bare minimum into a new PC that did what I needed.)
Remember...the least you have to spend for the minimum that makes you happy...unless the upgrades are free or cheap. -
Last time I checked my own score with an A6-3410MX I did surpass an I5, that's why I'm talking. I haven't checked I7s though...
BTW is not valid, not at least here, to talk about normal (i.e. non overclocked, factory settings) when this threat specifically deals with the jump in performance due overclocking. -
This is a simple fact: Yeah, I7 rock.
This is another simple fact: AMD A6 and A8 are underpowered, when powered they reach an I5 easily, for a fraction of the price with much more graphics power (xfire)
This is the deal of AMD, the bullseye if you allow me to say. AMD is gaming, cheap but good gaming. (and a lot of some other tasks perfectly... but I7 will continue crunching numbers, for a price that is) -
Also, for the record...Intel vs AMD? "Better" is subjective.
Performance and bragging rights? (For now) Intel, easy. All my towers at home run them. (Core 2 Quads, and they do everything I want with headroom for more.)
Bang for buck? AMD, hands down, IF they do what you want them to, when you want them to. -
Yeah. I just bought a DV6 with A8-3500m for $429 for my 16 year old niece for Christmas, actually my sister did, but I got it and am configuring it, but whatever. Best bang for the buck machine you can find. Not sure if you could find anything comparable with an Intel i5. Good IGP, great CPU performance, and am going to undervolt it/overclock it. Funny how I can get more performance AND more battery life than a stock config. AMD cranked the voltage way up on these bad boys. But that's ok, better for us.
-
Thanks Clark for the very thorough explanation. I probably should have gone into more detail about why I bought a notebook computer. Although, it it is essentially the same reason you purchased yours. I work in the financial industry(technical analyst) and travel quite often. I wanted to take along a notebook when travelling so that I can do some gaming, watch a flick etc. I figured if I counted up the cost of the Movies on Demand fees for the last two years...well the notebook would be paid for.
So, for me...this little notebook has been a Godsend. The budget was somewhat tight, I wanted an SSD because I've gotten used to them in my home rig and I wanted as much video power as possible to play some older games on. Didn't realize this little notebook would be able to play the same games I'm playing on my i3-2100/GTX 560 that I use as a desktop. I don't plan on doing a desktop replacement in the future, I've gone mini-itx and I'm quite happy with it. I use 2-P2412H Dell's and have had the same monitor setup for going on 7 years. One horizontal/One vertical, I don't see me changing what I've gotten used to and love.
Although, the very fact is...this laptop can do everything I'm doing at home and I can take it on the road. Pleased as punch...If I upgrade the pc at home later on, I might want to tackle this a8-3550mx if needed. Just wanted to make sure there aren't any compatibility issues I'm not aware of. As stated, I usually buy Intel cpu/mobo combos...I stopped buying AMD when the C2D's hit the shelf and haven't been paying attention to what's been going on with them since. Although, this little llano has captured my attention. I've been buying Steam games on the Christmas sale and trying each one out on the notebook...needless to say, having a heckuva lot of fun.
I did want to add...below in my sig, it mentions I picked up 8gb's of G. Skill, I have since pulled it from the machine and replaced the second Samsung stick with another matching 4g stick. I bought it at SuperBiiz with a coupon. Ran me $20 or so. The G. Skill seemed to run slower, I didn't do any formal testing, but...seat of the pants, websites weren't loading nearly as quick. Overall, my little notebook felt more sluggish. I like this Samsung memory.
Best,
Liquid Cool -
I honestly bought this laptop just when it came out in Germany. It was like "Well... time to replace my still functional Inspiron 1501, but if I leave Germany in my country I wouldn't be able to see more options like this... which laptop to choose..."
Then
"All the good laptops have intel but they still have GDDR3 and very few have USB 3.0... and the price always exceeds 1000 euro..."
I didn't know llano back then, when it finally arrived I saw a very bad review on Notebook Test, Laptop Test und News - Notebookcheck.com and then I was like
"Darn these scores are really bad... and yet is the only thing that has USB 3.0 and GDDR5, I wonder if I even will be able to play NDS..."
Then I saw the price
"Only 611 euros? for two graphics card and a quad core processor? well if I chose the wrong laptop at least it will not hurt too much"
Then I tried to play NDS
"It doesn't run very well... well, at least I will work efficiently here"
Then came here and saw processor overclock
"WOW, I CAN PLAY NOW NDS!"
Then came Musho and his modified Bioses
"WOW, I CAN RUN NFS: HP 2010 VERY WELL"
Then came Battlefield 3
"WOW IT RUNS FASTER!!"
Then came Skyrim
" YEAH, THE RPG THAT I ALWAYS WANTED!!"
All thanks to this cheap, but funny and powerful laptop

My order is officially in production now. It started yesterday and has an estimated ship date of December 27th. I really wanted it by Christmas, is there any chance it will ship a few days early?
-
lol why are you asking us?
-
Noone has heard any problems about the Corsair Force 3's working with this laptop, besides the one i mentioned earlier?
Im trying to figure out if defective or incompatible. Again, same ssd works on other pcs and am using a diff ssd in current setup.
Normally, I wouldve thought I answered my own Question with that, but the 6230 wifi chip i bought is whitelisted because it isnt the HP 6230 version,, so it is not compatible. Am switching it out for the correct 6230 chip. -
Because chances are that someone who ordered from HP would know how accurate their delivery estimations are.
-
One may hope I suppose. This thing keeps giving, I played with Quiet mode today and everything remains laser smooth without budging from 800MHz. And I tend to have a LOT going while on the internet.
i7 only stays ahead of A8 if it doesn't start throttling. And too many laptops do not have the cooling for a sustained load on i7. Tests like Cinebench do not generate nearly enough heat in their short run time. But I can play Shogun 2 indefinitely with two cores loaded by a render job, and even OC'ed it will never get hot enough to throttle. A common trait of the i-series would be superior stock clocks and an excellent sprint. But this A-series excels with mobile endurance, and requires much less cooling.
Incidentally, anyone on the road should check out the current generation of USB monitors.

They're not what I would call "heroic", but price is very competitive and lack of extra cabling is a huge plus. My first exposure to such tech was a lovely 10" photo frame, it could be rotated and could switch among photo/clock, monitor, storage. Left it next to the PC, backed up my docs folder and switch to monitor mode so it couldn't be read or written. When PC was shut off it could display pictures, time, date. The new panels are bigger, faster, overall more useful. I may have to get one for this creature, but probably waiting on a good USB3 panel for better image quality. -
Generally, samsung/intel/crucial seem to have better feedback.
SSD tend to have 3 year warranty, so just RMA it if not sure . Never heard that pc is picky about SSD though.
