Just a heads up, was wandering around Best Buy when I spotted a geek squad guy, talking to the floor manager holding some kind of lenovo box. Wandered up within hearing range and the fellow was telling the manager someone had decided to buy it, had them open it but changed his mind after he found out they were going to charge him big bux for their 'geek squad' prep or whatever they call it. Apparently it was the last of a discontinued line having the E450. FusionTweaker version for the Brazos series appears to work :) more to follow. (and people are forking over 600 on IPad's? puulllleeeze.

    is there a noticeable difference in gaming with a a8-3500m w/ 6750m and a SB i5 w/ 6770m?

From what I read, no there shouldn't be.. the 6750 is alot like the 6770m, just clocked lower. Nothing a slight overclock can't handle. From what I seen on the forums though, that 6770m can achieve a higher overclock, but shouldn't take much for the 6750 to get to its default speed. That i5 could potentially be a better number cruncher when it comes to processing power, but with overclocking the A8, people say it helps alot and the A8 can hold its own. Real world I don't think you will notice a difference unless your a heavy user imo. General use like web, document creation, casual gaming I doubt you would notice a difference.

I would expect it to get higher benchmark scores, but in all respect in general use and gaming benchmark scores don't mean much.

Can't wait to get mine in a few hours from UPS =)

    sweet!

btw, anyone knows whatever happened to the backlit keyboard option with the dv line? i really don't get why HP removed that option. i mean backlit kb's should already be a standard feature these days or atleast an option.

*has anyone heard or read anything about HP making that option available again?

For single or dual threaded apps, a stock A6/A8 will be about on par with an i3. Overclocked about an i5-2410m. But you have to remember the A6/A8 are true quad cores so any multi-threaded apps will run faster. In general I'd prefer true four cores than hyper-threading.

So, I reinstalled Windows 7 on my DV6-6128CA, and incrementally installed all required drivers starting with the graphics first. After each driver install, I tested some DirectX10 games to see if vsync would work... and nope. All my DirectX 10 games still tear. I know that vsync is "enabled" as the frame rate stops off at 60FPS but even when it's consistently 60, it STILL tears. Either the hardware configuration in combo with the drivers is screwing something up with DX10/11 apps or there's something wrong with the hardware?? I'm really clueless as to what could be wrong...

I took the bottom cover off and swapped the memory module.. but i put the battery in first before putting the bottom cover, and now the slider is stuck all the way to the right.. it won't slide left so the battery is stuck in there, and i cant get the bottom cover on all the way. edit: nvm i got it

Hey guys. Problem here. I pulled out the stock HDD to swap in a SSD. Before I could hook up to clone, my three year old grabbed the HDD and dropped it in the toilet! So now I have an HDD that is dead, and a blank SSD. Of course, I didn't make recovery discs. If I order recovery discs from HP, will that work on the SSD, or will I have to put it on a HDD, then clone it? And will it be a legit copy of windows, since I can't get my key off the dead drive? Does it create all the partitions on the new drive? HP_tools, recovery, and Windows partition? Thanks!

I am using that code and I went ahead and ordered it.

I was wanting a DV7QTE but with all the graphics card confusion and the fact that I can get this for a couple hundred less with 2 batteries and a full HD screen just made the choice for me.

Still...$66 in sales tax sucks. So wish I could have something on Amazon, Newegg, or Tiger where they don't charge me Arizona sales tax.

Now I just need to buy a solid messenger style bag for it to rest in when I go on an airplane. Anyone have any recommendations on a nice cheap bag?

I don't even pretend to understand HP tax policy. Even if you buy from one of the 5 states with no sales tax, they still charge you.

As far as a case goes, I can only tell you that, from my personal experience, I ditched the HP briefcase-like bag (for my HDX18T) I had in favor of a Targus laptop backpack, which I bought from Wal-Mart on special for some ridiculously cheap price. Holds much more and is far easier to carry through the airports.

Cool got her flashed. Tempted to pick up an extra bottom on ebay to put holes in, or just straight out put holes in mine. (and if something ever happens, than order a new bottom on ebay ) Being $$broke makes me think to just do it anyways.

Maybe do the holesaw trick for the heatsink fan, glue some speaker grill inside it, than remove the mesh on the other vents?

There's a thread on this site ( notebookreview) somewhere (google can find it) that has legit and legal win 7 downloads. Find that. Use the windows key from the bottom of your computer. If it doesn't just work you may have to call MS to get your machine activated. Most the time I've used the keys on my machines (1 desktop and 2 laptops so far) they've just worked with the legit win 7 dl you can get referenced in the thread on this site.

Install the file availble here HP BIOS Update UEFI HP Pavilion dv6-6135dx Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)
    (assuming you have 6135dx).

This will create HP_Tools for you.

I have a problem of my own around HP_Tools. At the start if I press windows key + B the little led on caps lock keeps on flashing but nothing else happens.

    Am I doing something wrong?

    Also,

I am planning to change the wireless card (and get Bluetooth capability). I have never open up a laptop before.
1.Is the card mentioned above good enough for standard usage?
2.Will it need the whitelist bios?
3.Can some one please guide me on how to replace this?
    TIA

It is fairly easy since it is on the bottom of the laptop, just remove the bottom cover and there it is, just 2 little philips screws and the antenna wires plugged in. You will probably need the no whitelist bios.

I have that card on order so I will be swapping it when I get it..

I use CPU-z for CPU with k10stat. And I use the AMD clock tool linked a few pages back for gpu. The gpu-z did not work with my 6750m. Gave false readouts on mem speed

    AIDA64.

You can run and have it running individual OSD sensor temps, voltages, clocks, utilization..etc running all the time. Quick glance and it's all right there (best used with 2 monitors.)

    Best alternative is HWMonitor.

    thanks guys

dreamonic, i am really tempted to cut the hole in mine like yours, how did you get a good idea of where to drill the hole? and did you drill from the inside or outside of it to get a clean cut? Is there enough space to cut some speaker grill and hotglue it on the inside of the hole?

    Glad you asked, hypertek.

You need to take apart the laptop right down to just the bottom case but before you do, measure where the fan is before taking the motherboard out. After removal of motherboard, get rid of the fabric lining and tape around the fan area.

Then you'll need to measure from the outside wall (if you are looking on the inside) directly center of the fan. Double check to make sure it measures right! Then flip the bottom case over and get something flat to lay on edge beside the laptops outer wall side and measure from that to make your mark.

To get a clean finish, you drill from the side you want the clean cut on. So outside. Now, there is a metal plate that will be in the way there, it is okay to drill through this, but drill slowly! And apply pressure from the inside slightly around the plastic rivets so they don't bust off. I completely removed this plate on mine, so that the grill is equal length around the hole. The rivet studs will need to be shaved. I did this method because I used a full size grill for both fan hole, and cut outs of stock cpu/gpu plastic grills in 1 piece.

    I used a 44mm or 1 3/4" hole saw for fan.

Problem is when you add the grill on the inside, and glue it, all of it HAS to be shorter than the height of the stand offs that the fan screws onto otherwise the fan won't spin freely because it'll press against the casing. Best alternative to hot glue gun is double sided tape, no thicker than 1/8". Check to make sure during the process of installing that the fan spins freely, no scraping or slow moving before putting it all back together to find out it's rubbing! It'll be a PITA and I learned it by using a lil too thick trail of glue with the mini glue gun.

And while you are in there, remove the screens on the grills around the gpu/cpu or cut them and put in a better grill.

Be sure to take your time. :)

thanks for the advice, if i follow through with this, ill be sure to post up. What type of grill are you planing to do for yours?

A nice even pattern of drilled holes would probably be a nice alternative as well.

I'm using this, perforated sheet metal. [IMG]

And I thought about drilling holes too but... :)
My old dv6 modded with a ZM-87, it needed better cooling! Bought a $100 cooler and tore it up for the aluminum antec grill. The hole you make is more for the cooler than just the fan.

ok got a little issue, when I launch a game or any program that typically flickers the screen, well sometimes the screen just goes black, like when I was running 3dmark11 and it switches between test, after the 2nd test, it just stays black until i go to sleep mode and come back than close it. I updated to latest drivers, should I roll back to older ones?

Seems like a switching problem when going from the discrete to the integrated gpu.

Edit: going to try going back to the stock f21 bios and see if that takes care of it.

edit2: went back to stock f21 bios, I am still getting a DXGI_ERROR_NOT_FOUND error in 3dmark11 after the first 2 test

If you need to recover bios with HP_TOOLS, it should start itself.

I had a wireless mouse dongle plugged into the left side usb ports, i unplugged it and it seems to be working... culprit could be that, or the memory module I just pulled out .

Browsing around on Amazon UK, I found this new model: dv6-6c12ea , with the A6-3430 and the new Radeon 7670m. At £650, it's £100 cheaper than the dv6-6b07sa, so on the face of it seems like a good deal for slightly faster processor and one of the newer graphics cards.

The thing I'm not sure about is the 7670m, which apparently uses DDR3 memory, while the 6b07 has the 6750m which uses GDDR5. The 7670m looks like a simple die shrink of the 6650m, so will probably be a smidgeon faster than that, and more power efficient, but unlikely to have the same grunt as the 6750m.

Hopefully, we'll see some benchmarks soon.

I heard that that precise card was just another 6750m with a increase in frequency of 175Mhz...
Edit: I lie, however they still are based on the old 6000 series with VLIW 5, the newers are VLIW4... has sense since the apu a6 3430mx has VLIW5 graphics inside, truth be told, they are 28 nm now, that should allow for more overclock if possible.
