Got my HP dv7 1090ed a week now. Love it. But I have a question. I was fooling around with the nVidia control panel and changed some settings. Is there a way to set them back to standard? How much I try, I find that the screen was better before I changed anything. Any input would be very welcome. Thanks!

^ LOLOL. me too, man. my 1st one took only 2 days to get here, and this one took a century! LOL
the holiday weekend didnt help any. -
Funny, I called Fedex at 9:16 am and was told they don't update till office is open at 9:00am. She left a message for the office to tell me status and to hold it for my pickup if not.
I said thanks and clicked update of fedex tracking site and now say's being delivered and on truck.
Maybe others will get it today on west coast.

I dunno... this doesn't look promising:
EDIT: I'm in Portland -
Unbelievable it's just showed up at my door.
Maybe everyone else may have the same thing. Update on site are slower then real life. Let everyone know how it works. Please work! -
awesome..mine is now out for delivery, should have it within a few hours
-
I have noticed that I have keys on the keyboard that do not work. The "backspace" key for example, as well as "'" key, the "8" key on the number pad.
Any suggestions? -

^ no way, that sucks! mine seem to be working fine. i would give hp a call immediately.

The dv7t is a great system, but it looks like we all need to do some end-user QC. here's my list so far:
- Screen: Scratches and (for Infinity) hair/dust behind panel
- Screen: Dead pixels (not common so far), crappy LCD (light bleeding from the bottom)
- Body: Scratches, scuffs, cracks, and general signs of refurbishing
- Multimedia Buttons
- Keyboard Keys
- Blu-ray playability, CD/DVD burning (most issues will probably be software)
- Heat Output
- USB Ports (& eSATA?)
- FireWire
- HDMI A/V
- Headphone & Mic connectors
This is just from what I've seen issues with so far. Feel free to modify - we should definitely have a "dv7t unboxing QC Checks" sticky or something. -
Man....talk about frustrating. -
I concur completely. I was offended by the "Asians" reference but I didn't take the time to respond (as I usually do) and for that lapse in judgment I apologize. Thanks for filling the gap.

Hey everyone--- I will soon be receiving my hp dv7t and was hoping for some of your opinions.....
my dv7t is coming with:
2.53ghz core 2- duo
3 gb ram
320 gb hard drive
512 mb 9600m gt
basic 17" screen
windows vista 32 bit
A friend of mine recently informed me about Gateway's P-7811fx offered at best buy for $1249--- it comes with:
2.26 ghz core 2-duo
4gb ram
200 gb hard drive
512 mb 9800m gts
vista 64
Seeing as i would be using my new laptop mostly for gaming, i am interested in this gateway...what do you guys think? The 9800m gts is a good amount faster than the 9600m gt right? It seems that way from the benchmarks....
I would love your un-biased opinions, and I understand as dv7t owners you may want to defend the dv7t...
I am also aware that there has seemed to have been some 7811fx's that are lemons---but i also understand that best buy will do returns for two weeks....
At the moment this is a hard decision for me to make.... Most likely my dv7t will be arriving tonight or tomorrow, so I will probably check it out and see how i like it...I'm sure it would play the games i am interested in (battlefield 1942, 2, CoD 2, 4, Quake 4,) but i also want a future-proofed machine that would handle the next generation of games as well....
Do you think the 64 bit vista would be a problem with older games like Wolf:ET, CoD 2, and BF 1942?
Also: I hope this isn't a bad time to be mentioning a different brand of laptops after nomoredell's rant against the hp dv7t. Please note: I am in no way suggesting any inadequacy of the dv7t... It's just hard knowing that I could have the 9800m gts on that gateway for such a good price... what are your guys' opinions?
thanks... -
Hi all,
Just thought I would let you know that i have bought a HPDV7-1020ea in the last week and it is superb. It is great at multi-tasking (playing RE4 whilst virus checking etc). The visuals on RE4 are awesome much better than my previous DV9268ea!!
Totally recomend this one. -

the dv7t i got this morning is awesome! ;-D
for me, this is a desktop replacement and right now, it's sitting on my desk with the rear 'stands' propped up with some 1" cube looking things i had laying around. after using the machine for surfing for a couple of hours, my processor temps are at around 110 to 120 and my gpu temp is steady in between 120 and 125.
i installed unreal on it but have not played it yet. right now im just doing some school work... :: yawn :: -
So after playing Half Life 2 at 1680 X 1050 on high settings the max Geforce 9600m GT temp is 89 degrees C (using the NC2000 cooler in a warm room). That isn't too bad, is it?

There is only one question you really need to think about- are you going to be moving the laptop around frequently? The Gateway is about a pound heavier and the battery sticks out of the back quite a bit.
Other than that and the possibly cheaper build quality (the gateway feels a little cheap to me- you should check it out at BestBuy before you buy it) it is a great deal especially now that it is on sale (and includes a free game). It even has 4 GB of DDR3 ram which is normally very expensive.
I have found the 9600 GT to be more than capable for my gaming. I have been playing The Orange Box games at 1680 X 1050 on high settings with no problem. Then again, I am upgrading from an HP Pavillion zv5000 that had a Geforce 440 card with 64 mb of video memory.
I payed about $1250 for my DV7t and I am very happy with it since I got the TV tuner. -
Also heard bad stuff with the warranties from them.. But some other recommend it... so it's more about take a choice...
Best gaming laptop or decent gaming laptop... Ur choice. -
I am sure that many people get lucky with them. However, through my University I have had 5 Gateways, one desktop, and 4 notebooks over a 7 year time frame. Of those 4 have failed once, 2 twice and one lucky one hit the trifecta and failed 3 times. Service times range from weeks to months. Most common issues? Power supply failures, mother board defects, and shoddy BSODing drivers.
My U switched to HP, and my friend who is Head Admin at another U now uses Dell. Both reported Gateways arriving with issues typically either DOA (common) to mis-configured in about 30% of the cases.
I write this now on a loaner Gateway while my main Gateway lappy is being fixed... I am thankful all this one does is BSOD periodically, and drop wifi about 2-3 times a day. Not bad... for a Gateway. ;-/
That is not to say that HP or any other brand will not have lemons too of course. And, if you really want that extra graphics punch... Well, the Gateway is a pretty compelling value on paper. If it works, it will surely play games better. -
I've got no problems with Gateway. I think their products are decent and good looking.
Dell products perform okay but in my opinion don't appeal to me from a visual view. I give Dell HUGE props for their customization options when it comes to configuring laptops and desktops.
Sony products while looking flashy and nice are grossly overpriced. For the amount of money they charge you get very little in terms of specs. Sony really doesn't give the user a lot of options when it comes to configuring their laptops either.
Apple...again nice looking products but pretty expensive. However I hear the performance on Macs is great so to owners of Macs I'm sure it's worth every penny.
Toshiba is alright. Sorta like Gateway to me.
Don't know a lot about Asus or Acer. -
allfiredup Notebook Virtuoso
I placed the order for my new dv7t on on 8/30/08. I'm like a kid counting the days until Christmas waiting for it to ship! HP claims that it will go out no later than 9/10/08 (next Wednesday) and I paid for 2-day shipping...so I've got about nine days to go!
Here's how I configured mine-
HP dv7t
Vista Home Premium 64-bit
2.26GHz Intel P8400 processor
17" WSXGA+ (1680x1050) Infinity BrightView display
3GB DDR2 RAM
320GB Hard Drive
512mb nVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics card (hope I don't regret that!!!)
DVD SuperMulti (skipped LightScribe, had it on my last two and never used it)
Webcam & Fingerprint Reader
Intel Wi-Fi Link 5100AGN & Bluetooth
I was able to use the 30% off coupon and the total (before tax/shipping) was just $1082.89! I feel sorry for the people who go into an electronics retail store to buy something like this- end up paying $1500 for the model on the shelf and it doesn't even include the high resolution screen or processor upgrade! -
In regards to allfiredup and others who just recently purchased or plan to purchase a dv7t in the near future: You will not be disappointed! Myself and everyone else here love these laptops.
On a side note about shipping, I am not sure if you can change the 2nd day shipping option to save some money, but I would if you can. I had mine shipped to Pensacola, FL and it went from China to my doorstep in ~2-1/4 days. Shipped Wednesday and had it in my hands by 10:30 Friday morning. So I really don't think it makes a difference whether or not you get the 2 day shipping and save some $$$.
Just a thought... -
Just got my laptop today. so far its performing well and looks great. I went through and had to un-install a ton of programs. they really loaded it up with a bunch of crap. I'm going to run it for while to see how it performs, i may end up wiping it clean and installing vista fresh.
I got the regular screen, not the infinity. It looks great, doesn't have much glare. I do get a bit of backlight bleed at the bottom, but it isn't a huge deal. the only thing that throws me off a little bit is the position of the touchpad. it is shifted slightly to the left, centered with the keyboard. Maybe i'm not used to it yet, but i constantly hitting the little scroll thing on the right side of the touchpad.
more to come as i use it a bit more -
Hi guys, question: I have the 1440x900 infinity screen (best you can get here in The Netherlands, I know, sucks), and I am not pleased. Things look too grainy for me. I was adjusting settings in de nVidia control screen, thought I had it covered, but still not satisfied. Any tips?
-
could anyone who has installed a fresh copy of vista point me in the direction of some info on how to get the fingerprint reader working? cheers

*** yo omega - any update on your keyboard issue? :-(
its been 24 hours since i got m dv7t and this thing is awesome!
what i like:
- windows media center + remote! now i can sit in bed and scroll through all the simpsons/family guy/south park / ali g episodes / movies i have and be able to switch between them. i am complementing the OS on this but the hp remote is also really good. i have to get used to the remote and be able to "feel" which button is what.
- speed - this thing is a monster. every window loads so quickly. after gaming, i exit unreal tournement and it brings me back to the desktop in 1 or 2 seconds max. it's that fast
all in all, im loving this thing. the infinity display is not as bad as it first seemed and, at night, it's truly gorgeous.
one thing to note. i use my dv7t on a wooden desk. when sitting on the desk, the gpu temp goes up to about 125f for some reason. however, when i prop up the rear 'legs' of the notebook, maybe an inch, the gpu temp dips to around 110-113 and it stays within that range.
just wanted to mention that. no problem at all with temps or anything, but by doing something simple - propping the rear legs up -the unit stays MUCH cooler. i am not using a notebook cooler, btw.
i hope everyone is enjoying their machines as much as i am.
i also got the quickdock since i bring my laptop to my living room + bedroom to watch movies. the thing is a breeze to use and i like the fact that it has 6 USB ports on it.

After about 1 1/2 hours on tech support, they are sending me a box so that I can send my BRAND NEW laptop back for repair.
I'm debating if I should just return the thing and wait a couple months for something better... -
timesquaredesi MagicPeople VooDooPeople
aww man that sucks =( i honestly think that if you dont NEED the laptop, then wait for something better - although the dv series is 'new' and will be here for a while...
would you consider keeping a new dv7t if they gave you a break on accessories or something? or have you completely ruled out keeping the laptop? -
I haven't ruled it out completely. Since this isn't a necessity, I just may wait for a quad core laptop...
We'll see when I get it back from repair. -
Hey I have a quick question is there a USB port on the right side of the laptop towards the front end of the part that would lay on your lap?
I will be using a Wireless mouse with my laptop and I usually had it plugged into the laptop on the right side so I want to know if the dv7t has this. -
timesquaredesi MagicPeople VooDooPeople
yeah, there are usb ports on the right side, towards the front of the laptop. there are 2 here actually, and they're right next to the dvd drive.
you can look at the hp site too for detailed pics of where the ports are. when you are sitting in front of the laptop, there are two usb ports on the right hand side next to the dvd drive and one usb port on the left hand side of the laptop.
i have a usb wireless mouse but im going to get a bluetooth mouse soon enough. my unit comes with bluetooth, may as well use it ;]
yo - the quick dock has SIX usb ports on it!!!! four in the back, and two on the right hand side! that's 9 usb ports between the quick dock and the laptop itself! l0l -
-
timesquaredesi MagicPeople VooDooPeople
im not sure, since i use the laptop plugged in 99.9% of the time, i wont be affected but this is something that someone should figure out tho. ;-D
-
timesquaredesi MagicPeople VooDooPeople
i cleaned up the startup / pre-installed crapware as much as i could have. im at 75 processes, using 48% of my memory!!! i have only IE and excel open! ***!
so, when i get the time, im doing a fresh install of vista ultimate. i dont know why - if we pay for the OS, why the hell dont we get the CD it comes with? it doesnt make any sense.
if anyone is looking to upgrade their OS or buy a new laptop - just get whatever os comes for free with the laptop and buy your own OS, in the box, afterwards.
i am going to do a clean install when i get the time which will be like later this month or next month =/ -
But on another note timesquaredesi, have you tried hooking up your uber logitech speakers via the QuickDock S/PDIF yet? -
timesquaredesi MagicPeople VooDooPeople
another power cord is $79.99!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! trust me, that pi$$sed me off so much that it didnt come with one. i always got power cords on my ibm's and lenovo's when i got docking stations, but i only have one with my dv7t...........
i have not hooked up the uber speakers to the s/pdif yet... lol... i ordered this cable from amazon
http://www.amazon.com/Philips-M6279...2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1220545120&sr=8-2
and it shipped today. its coming from boston so hopefullyi i'll have it by saturday...?
i am eager to hear the difference -if any - in quality. -
Uhh my dv7t is in Newark, NJ. Expected to be here tomorrow. I must say I'm quite disappointed.
But the lady at FedEx was nice and left a note for someone to call me when it was on its way over. Also I scheduled a time for when I would be at home for them to deliver it.
I just hope it's an excellent laptop and everything I desire. After all this time and frustration with HP's return policy I honestly don't know if I an go thru it again. -
i got mine down to about 64 processes running. I'm debating whether or not i want to re-install vista. what method were you planning on using timesquaredesi?
-
timesquaredesi MagicPeople VooDooPeople
i was going to backup the swsetup folder on the C drive then just install vista ultimate. now im wondering where i can get a copy of the cd from.
my unit came with vista ultimate so im assuming i can use that license code. i simply need the dvd now. after that's installed, i'll dig thru the swsetup folder to make sure i install all the drivers + necessary apps successfully. im going to take an image of a 'clean restore' first to be on the extremely safe side. from there, im wiping out all partitions (c and recovery) and starting from scratch. this is the plan for now, probably wont be doing it till later this month or next.
cass-
trust me, it's definitely worth the wait. i returned my 1st dv7t on like august 24th or so and got my new unit yesterday. those 10-12 days crawled like you can not imagine. lol.
there is nothing more satisfying than opening up a new toy! ;-D -
yeah, i have a vista ultimate OEM dvd that i got for my desktop that I built. I'm assuming I can use that to install and use the key off the sticker on the laptop. then it is just a matter of drivers for all the stuff on the laptop.
