Is anyone else having trouble with their touchpad? My girl's dv7t touchpad is acting weird. Sometimes it jumps, while other times, it decides to stop working for like 15 minutes.

    Hey!

You can save a fave/bookmark to mobile faves and then when you sync up a mobile device (like my 8925/Tilt) it will add those to the faves in the PPC/devices Internet Explorer.

Out of the box IE7 had it, but then I de/re-installed Mobile Device Center and I think that process installed another instance of it.

I'm way more inclined to think it was the HP plugins. Hell, I might even re-enable the extra mobile favorites and see if any bugs come back.

It's *extremely* solid now - that was just about the only problem I've had.

    Hey DT,

I read your post about IE7 screwing up; I have been having the same problems. I went to Tools>>Internet Options>>Programs there wasn't a "Plugins" options but there was "Manage Add-ons" (I'm assuming they are the same thing.) I disabled the two things that started with "HP": HP Smart BHO Class and HP Smart Select. I did not see anything that had to do with "Mobile Faves" and the only things that had two of the same thing were Java Plug-in 1.6.0_05 and Quicktime.

Are these the same HP things you disabled?

Yes they are and you were in exactly the right place (sorry my labels might have not been 100% - BTW, it's also on the toolbar under Tools >> Manage Add-Ons).

Oh yeah, and FWIW, I re-enabled my 2nd Mobile Faves and still things are running just about perfectly. Those two HP plugins/add-ins/ons were definitely hanging up IE on occasion and particularly during startup.

This appears to be the currently active 30% off coupon code:

    NB5540

Tried it on a DV and it works right now (10:41p EST, 10/09/2008).

Today I hooked up my dv7t to my LCD TV using a HDMI Cable.
I set the display to be only the TV.
Using the windows media center, I tried watching a DVD, an avi file, and playing World of Warcraft.
I noticed that while watching the DVD and the avi movie, that the resolution would occasionally (ever 10 min or so) 'flicker' down to a lower resolution and then flicker back up to the regular resolution I have it set at (1440x900). It would do this in less than a second, so wasn't really bothering me - but then again i didn't really watch the whole DVD or movie.
When I tried playing WoW, it would do it every minute or so, that was pretty annoying.

Anyone have any thoughts on why this might be happening?

Maybe the hard drives that come with d7t(250 5400 sata 150)aren't Fujitsu- I just saw a coupole at best buy and they had western digital. This is not good, they are more like 4200s unless there is a higherline..I think Scorpio is name of these
    underperformers.
Actually its spec aren't that diff than 7200 travelstar..its just a reviewer said it was like 4200s and there's nothing to back his statement up...well I'm going to check some more.

    Never mind

Latency and avg seek are just 1-2 ms slower than 7200-so it must be the track to track seek and data transfer where its so much slower(maybe?)
Now a reviewer has it compared to some 7200s/..here's some air:

    Let's see...

You add to cart >> Review and Buy >> enter your contact info (no billing yet) and at the next screen after name/address/etc., there's a textbox at the top to enter a coupon code and an APPLY button. Your total in the top, right corner (not a detail, just the price) should indicate the 30% or so savings. After the *next* screen you'll get the payment and final transaction confirmation!

    Hope that helps ~

I just sent my DV7t back and was tinking about the HDX18t. I was going to need to exchange it anyway because the side panel was dented (so much for quality control). After some thought I think I will just order a new DV7t. There is so no real perfromance difference between the DV7t and the HDX18t except fot the screen resolution and the fact that the HDX18t is pretty big and won't fit in any hard cses out there. I like the portablility of the Dv7t and if only they came out with an Ultra Brightview option I wouldn't even cinsider that monster HDX.

The only SERIOUS differance is the QX9300 2.53Ghz Intel Quad Core Extreme processor. But they took it off the website. I heard due to availability issues. That makes it a sick laptop! If they put it back as a choice I might be sending my DV7T back.

They will, but I hate the size of the thing. Plus, there are only two games that even use the quad core. That is the one thing I hate most about HP...they know nothing about ressuply when volume gets low. If i miss out on the coupon because I have to wait for some part to arrive I'm gunna scream.

Wrong. It's not about "Quad core support", it's about SMP support in general. There are plenty of games and applications that do it well.

    A question I can answer!

You 're looking for the xb4. I only know this, because I recently won a DV7t and the xv4 came with it. I also read in reviews that the xb4 is the correct one.

Anyone watched some 720p on your dv7t? How's it look. I know it's only 17in, so I don't expect fantasbulous HD, just kind of wondering.

So why exactly does everyone suddenly think the HDX's are better than the dv7t? As far as I can tell, the dv7t offers more ram, a 7200 rpm hard drive combination, and the option to forego the infinity screen. Shouldn't tha tmake it better, or am I missing something (other than the 1080p screen on the HDX's?)

Currently, the HDX18 isn't showing a couple of the major options it was when it first came out such as the 2.5 QUADCORE processor as well as the 7200 drives and the other advantage like you said is, of course the 1080p 18" screen that has ULTRA BRIGHT (a major plus in my book)

I loved the dual 7200's they were fast but they did get warm (some complain and say too HOT), I never had that big of a problem with them heat wise though. They did add a little extra weight that was almost impossible to notice as well. Please don't get the Infinity display though...That was a POS in my eyes, laptops are supposed to be mobile. What good is having a mobile laptop that can't be used outside because of all the glare?

Anyway, I ended up returning the dv7t and just got issued my credit on the 10th. I am currently waiting for the HDX18 quad core and dual 7200's options to come back.

I agree about the Infinity display. Do you think they will issue 30% off coupons on the HDX18? That's the only thing holding me back, if it's true that the HDX18 will offer better components... except, hopefully they will have the option to forego the Infinity display!

    Greetings all,

My month and half old Dv7t just malfunctioned on me today. I plugged the mains adapter into the laptop today during college and about thirty seconds later there was a searing smell of plastic and a puff of smoke coming out of the mains port.

Now a few hours later I can't even boot the laptop up because it won't charge the battery or even run off mains power. I'm pretty disappointed with that, I loved the laptop and it's specs were a steal for the price.

Has anyone had any experience returning a faulty machine to HP? Are their customer service okay to deal with it? I'm probaly looking to get a refund because I'm pretty reliant on my laptop for college and this experience has kinda soured trust in HP's build quality.

I don't have personal experience, but I can attest second hand to the fact that they're generally easy to deal with when it comes to getting something fixed. Dunno about the refund though, maybe?

Alright, I need help deciding between these two options:

Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    • Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T9600 (2.80GHz)
    • 17.0" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1680 x 1050)
    • 8GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
    • 640GB 7200RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (320GB x 2) with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    • HP Imprint Finish (Mesh) + Microphone + Webcam + Fingerprint Reader
    • HP Color Matching Keyboard
    • Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card with Bluetooth
    • No Modem
    • Lightscribe Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
    • HP Integrated HDTV Hybrid Tuner
    • 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    • Microsoft(R) Works 9.0

    Total: 3,403.99 - 30% off = $2,382.79

    OR

Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    • Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T9600 (2.80GHz)
    • 17.0" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1680 x 1050)
    • 50% OFF 4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
    • 640GB 7200RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (320GB x 2) with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    • HP Imprint Finish (Mesh) + Microphone + Webcam + Fingerprint Reader
    • HP Color Matching Keyboard
    • Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card with Bluetooth
    • No Modem
    • Lightscribe Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
    • HP Integrated HDTV Hybrid Tuner
    • 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    • Microsoft(R) Works 9.0

    Total: $2,803.99 - 30% = $1,962.79

If you haven't noticed, the difference is 8GB RAM vs. 4GB RAM. Is it worth the extra $420?

get the 8gb for the wow factor OR if you really have a need for it. otherwise, you can find plenty of other creative ways to spend $420 (get a surround sound speaker system or a huge external drive, nice wireless mouse, etc.)

when i got 30% off my dv7t, i took the extra cash and bought a logitech z5500 surround sound speaker system, a western digital 750gb external drive, logitech vx nano mouse, and a couple of other things (two 8gb usb drives, unreal tournement 3, a happauge tv tuner, some other stuff)

How have you connected your z5500 to your dv7? I've got both too. I'm awaiting a quickdock for my dv7 as I thought that's the only way of getting surround-out

i have connected it now via stereo cable but had trouble connecting it via surround sound / SPDIF port.

from some very high quality mp3s, i get surround sound, and from movies/tv shows i have on my computer, i also get surround sound. true, it may not be the highest quality, but it is surround.

pdx-alpha is working on getting the sound to work through the optical coax cable. for some reason, my z5500 speakers do not recieve/accept the signal from the quickdock. the speakers show 'no digital data' or something to that effect.

on my dv7t, i have set the spdif port as the sound hardware to use but still no go. a graph related to the spdif port moves up and down as i am playing a song/movie, but the speakers dont receive any of it for some reason...

if pdx gets it working, i'll buy him a beer. l0l.

    Lol, I like beer!

Now if I could only get my HDX... from the sound of it, that might take a while.

I will gladly buy a dv7 again if it ever gets the Ultra BrightView and a decent screen in general (*crosses fingers*)... the quad-core isn't a big deal to me, as the dv7 I had before was plenty fast enough and I have an 8-core 16GB RAM desktop at work :O

    question ---

i am considering getting two 500gb drives now to put into my dv7t. it came from hp with vista ultimate 64-bit on it.

how can i obtain a copy of vista ultimate 64-bit ONLY? i do not want the HP "image" of vista ultimate which comes coupled along with their generously installed crapware.

my unit DOES have a valid vista ultimate cd key on the bottom of it, obviously, because i paid for it. so does anyone know how i can get JUST the vista ultimate OS dvd?

is this something i can get from hp?

my plan is to install the two 500gb drives, install the OS ONLY, and then install the drivers + supporting apps.

I wish I had the link handy, but I at least know that Microsoft sells a "medium-only" version of Vista for somewhere around $30. Check the website, and good luck finding it lol. Maybe someone else has the link...

There's also a HOWTO on the forum that might help you.

excellent - thanks for the help.

that how-to is pretty thorough. i was also able to find the MS link to get the DVD's only --

    http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/content.aspx?ctId=444

i guess i'll pay the $20 to have this dvd shipped to me... even though i already paid for the OS ($160!) when i bought my system... i feel like im paying twice for something i already paid for once.

anyway, i'm ordering a copy tonite.

i dont know of any because this thing is quite large but take a look at what this dude built for his dv5t

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=300297

    pretty impressive and ingenius.

the way that i am keeping mine 'cool' for now is propping up the two rear legs with like 1" blocks. that way the keyboard is sort of angled and air can go beneath the unit.

while gaming, i have not had my temps over 70 C. it usually stays between 68 and 70C while gaming and considerably lower when simply surfing the net or watching a show.

    fwiw.

    Help....

I'm getting an error while trying to open the Cyberlink program "Power2go". After i clicked to that program an pop up window appears and said: The file [language\\P2GRC.dll] is missing. Please reinstall application.

How could i fix this? I haven't found any Cyberlink reinstaller in order to get the missing file

    Thanks,

Does anyone know how to play avi files on this thing? Whenever I download one from limewire it won't play.

*ahem* Assuming you're downloading non-copyrighted content, I would suggest downloading the DivX Codec that is commonly encoded within the .avi container of many "freely available" videos.

Try to read the install directions carefully to avoid installing bloatware. You don't need their player to play DivX files.
