another option is the all-in-one codecs pack --

    http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Codec_Pack_All_In_1.htm

that is a pack which contains many of the commonly used codecs and their latest versions. when i am redoing my machines, that's one of the first things i install on there.

it's freeware too but, as with the divx installer, carefully install it to avoid bloatware such as a player or internet explorer toolbar, etc.

o wow.. dude... umm.... you know, for, like, testing purposes... i think you should install unreal 3 or crysis or racecar grid and... ummm.. you know... report back your experience and let us know how the games play on that beast.

    :D :D :D

I've been using vista codec package for a couple of years now. It doesn't install any players, or change any settings on your pc. I can play just about anything now through windows media player ;)

LOL... let me tell you... playing WoW at 2560x1920 is a dream :) I've been meaning to get Vista on it for DX10 (It's a Mac Pro) but it's sadly not a priority at the moment.

Really? Maybe I downloaded divx before on this machine and forgot. I thought VLC would play avi without it. Def better than WMP either way.

I know I saw this somewhere...

I just realized where I saw it. It was in a discussion about watching blueray on Ubuntu. The way they did it was to rip the disc to the machine, then they played the file via VLC...so I guess you can't quite play a blueray.

Had some one ordered separated hard disk mounting kit for DV7T? IF yes, can you provide link?

I want to order a DV7T with a single disk of 5400RPM 250GB, and later I may replace it with dual 7200rpm 200GB disks. HP charges $225 for dual 5400RPM 250GB disks, and $500 for dual 7200RPM 320GB disks. But I can buy dual 7200GB 200GB disks for ~$170, and dual 7200RPM 320GB for $250. In this way, I can save some.

    Thanks,

Does anyone that has a dv7t in the US know if the power supply is rated for 240/250v?

Got a friend to order one yesterday with the 30% off and free 2-3 day shipping.

Thanks, perfect, now to find a C5 plug. Only £1.90 from rapid, somehow Maplins charge £10 for them. Will have to see if I need any other electrical parts in the next few weeks.

    Hey everyone,

I just had to reinstall Windows on my dv7t. I forgot who posted it and how it was done, but how do I get Internet Explorer 7 to keep from hanging up so often? Someone posted a few things that they changed and it really helped. Also, what do I do to get rid of the error message whenever I turn on my bluetooth mouse, put in a disc in the disc drive, etc.

I have been looking all over the forums, but can't find the posts I'm looking for!!

    Thanks

Just got the DV7T I won in the Freshman 15 contest.

    2.8 core 2 duo
    4GB Ram
    9600m GT
    blueray
    2 x 300GB
    Built-in tv tuner
    Vista ultimate

This thing is sweet. I just wish I had a vista install disc.

Gonna put Ubuntu on it when 8.10 gets released.

Question though...is there any way I can use the tv tuner in windows media without an ir patch whatever cable...I don't see the point of it. The direct tv box is right there why use a cable to go two feet when I could just point the remote at the cable box?

    #1 - congrats on the win! you're very lucky!@

#2 - i learned, by wasting $100 on a tv tuner, that the best tv experience is with your cable box. using a cable + tv tuner is so back asswards, it's like going back in time. the reception isn't always that clear, changing channels is SLOW and so utterly irritating. you can flip through all 100 channels on cable via the tv+cable box, and via tv tuner, that can take you like 20 minutes easily.

that has been my experience with the happauge 950Q which i got on amazon for $86.

i got my tuner like a month ago and i've used it twice - the day i got it and the day after.

to test the temps on my machine, i simply load up unreal tournement 3 and play for a while. LOL. there are other stress testers which you can download though. then to read the temps i use hwmonitor.

    http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php

the fan does stay on a lot but it's not loud, IMO. to some it is. the fan kicks into HIGH when i am playing unreal for 10 minutes + and goes on and off every couple of minutes. the max temp i've gotten up to, on my gpu, while playing unreal was 71C.

I'm not giving up hope yet. On the plus side, I get NBC HD from just the little antenna that came with it. Clear as day. I'm gonna try some different programs with it. Microsoft sucks at making things that make sense.

Probably windows system sounds, or internet explorer, where you click a link and it makes a "click" sound. I turn off all windows system sounds.

Is it true you need an cage to fit an extra HD into the laptop? Wouldn't there already be one in there? I paid for only one hard drive with the idea that I could get a second, cheaper, and fit it myself.

I don't know if it is the hdd or a fan. I ran the HDD diagnostics and it completely passed. But I was up late with it idling and I kept hearing a ticking that sounded like the hdd.

Also, the rear vent doesn't seem to push a lot of air. After the quick and full test lastnight the gpu temp was up to 51 and the back didn't seem to have much flow. I felt more air on the bottom of the machine.

Lastly, the one of the fans sounds almost grindy. I don't know if it is an audible phenomena, or that I am just so picky.

Our DV7T continues to run fantastic! No heat issues (the left palmrest just gets a little warm). Been doing some major codework on it, using it for video playback on our Sony TV, also installed VPC07 and XP w/ IE6 and Ubuntu 8.x that can run concurrent with Vista :D

Vista sucks. XP is gimpy on the dv7...I might ebay this piece of shat and buy a thinkpad or something. I have a 2.8 cor 2 duo and WMP locks up this thing! What the heck is that?!? I thought I was gonna be able to deal with vista and get it working right but....nope, not really. It sucks. Everyone is right. I'm annoyed.

Maybe I'll try...I'm just tired of my cor 2 duo being slower than my 3700+

I'm really hoping 8.10 is as great as people say the betas are. I do love my ubuntu, I just also like use of my hardware. My desktop can in no way shape or form use wifi, which is fine because I generally have it on ethernet, but I can't deal with that on a laptop. That being said, I have a very cheap and very crappy broadcom in my desktop. I'm expecting the best.

I haven't been having any Vista issues - my WiFi also seems pretty stout - I'm at ~60Mbs about as far away as I could be from the router (different story, oppposite corner - we're using a DLink DIR-655).

I haven't done a full shutdown the whole week (just hibernating), and everything is still running fast (I "only" have a 2.26GHz). In fact, I left open SQL/EM, VS2005, a WebServer, a DB server, browser(s) and fired up VLC on the external display and it chugged along just fine.

I've been pretty pleasantly surprised, I was on deck to install XP (which I still use on my desktop), but after I thinned out some pre-installed junk, tweaked my IE7 (per a previous post), everything has been outstanding.

    I don't use IE.

Things work fine sometimes and I've thinned this thing out about as well as I can think to do. It just gets really buggy. Does things such as: Won't show me how much battery I have left, struggles to open programs with nothing else running, and just overall weird glitches. I've restarted this thing 4 or 5 times a day since I got it.

That being said, I like what I see when it works. Last night I was playing Unreal 3 1680 x 1050 on high and alt tabing out to change songs on wmp and IM someone. I also really like vista's task scheduler. If I could just work out the kinks...

Before I got rid of my dv7 (I didn't like the screen quality), I did a fresh install of Vista SP1 and applied all the usual tweaks. It ran great, fast even, so I am certain the problem is HP bloatware.

As far as Ubuntu - yes, I hope 8.10 is good too :) I tried 8.04 on the dv7 and had some driver issues. Nothing that can't be fixed, though.

Yeah, if I had inconsistent issues like that I'd probably rethink using Vista. I'm sure there's a small different in environment, patches, drivers that make all the difference in a stable deployment vs. your scenario.

If I had any problems that effected the fairly intensive development I'm doing I'd swap out Vista in a hearbeat. I don't have any time for infrastructure issues!

    Best of luck ~

    Bungalow

    Maybe its haunted.

Well I've tried to go XP but the firewire audio is dead-meaning there is no adequat audio driver to handle this. Vista almost as bad. Other than that, this is a great piece of art to use as a pedestal for my toothbrushes.
No really it's improved, just too early for driver developement. I know Toshiba is no good for TC electronics firewire audio devices and I don't think that situation has improved..I hope this one does.

Pro audio does not use vista for the most part. Performance etc...also i have some PGs that won't be updated that don't work in Vista..and are very essential...its basically illogical to use vista unless you need lots of ram.
But i use for internet just to know it..and it is pretty.

Hi everyone, I've seen both the 1020ea & the 1055ea in PC World. They appear to have impressive specs at the price, but a couple of things bothered me which I thought I'd ask your help/advice with.
Firstly, the silvery appearance - is it a metal case or plastic made to look metallic?
Secondly, how durable is this finish in your experience - will it start to rub off with frequent use of the laptop?
Lastly, the monitor resolution seems rather average for a 17" laptop - are there plans for increasing the resolution somehow or does anyone know if/when we will get the HDX in the UK?
    Cheers
    Rick

After seeing the 1055ea in PC-World and being disgusted by the price, I've ordered a custom dv7t from the US with higher spec, but at £850 so far, before customs and VAT

I have not seen HP bring over ANY hi-res screens. According to HP, they only provide what is in demand... But how do they know demand if they only provide one option?

Yes mate the price was steep at £1200, but they've now reduced it to about £1050 (although that's still a lot of dosh). What I don't understand is why we're apparently not given the option in the UK of the HDX models - unless of course, they're coming our way in the future.

To be honest, I'm undecided what laptop to plump for - I previously had a VAIO A 317M, which I'd bought for £1400 from PC World in April '05 with the pc performance warranty. That thing went back under that warranty so many times, apparently coming back fixed when in truth it wasn't. In fact it went back 10 times this year before they finally agreed to write it off & sent me a voucher for £499 for a replacement! It turned out that was about what I'd paid them in warranty payments over the years, so one big rip off!!

I bought an acer aspire 6920g from PCWorld on 30/09/08 for £699, and took it back on 01/10/08 as acer confirmed it had a display fault. I took another 6920g on 01/10/08, which promptly went back on 23/10/08 as the microphone didn't work (inbuilt) which acer confirmed as a hardware problem rather than software. I got my money back but am now stumped, as I've done both the expensive and the cheaper end of the spectrum with different manufacturers and still both laptops being a pain in the a**e.
I don't mind spending the money, but I want something that 1. works as it should & 2. lasts longer than the 1yr. warranty without suddenly developing faults needing a call upon the extended warranty - is this too much to ask?
On a side not, I would purchase an extended warranty though - just in case!

My thoughts at the minute are between a custom build from Dell, one of the dv7 series/hdx if I can get one somewhere, or perhaps a Sony FW series - I'm tempted by Apple, but this just brings other issues of software requirements, not getting as much for your money etc etc.

Anyone got any thoughts/ suggestions/ experiences?

    Cheers
    Rick

    Rick,

I have had my dvt notebook for since the middle of August and haven't had any problems what-so-ever with it. It's an awesome machine. I got the customizable unit. I think you would be happy with it.

    Hi guys,

2 months ago i bought a DV7 1040EF and at first, i was pretty happy. I was using it for work mainly, thus windows, word, etc. Lately i've been starting to use it for games and watching movies on.

I'm seriusly starting to regret my purchase. The screen is just plan BAD. The viewing angles are non-existing. Even for one user, in front of the pc, there is not one viewing angle where everything looks good.
The black values of the screen ar actually light gray !
The backlight bleed is the worst i've seen on any screen ever. Its the infinity view 1440x900 LCD.

I've already took contact with HP about this, but seriously guys, does anyone else notice this issue? Is there anything i can do?
I'm already thinking of selling it if HP decides to do nothing about it.

please let me know what you think...thanks
