i ordered mine on the 17th i believe so i guess it kind of makes sense for yours to be shipped a little while after also, is 1400x900 a bad resolution? ive seen a lot of people complaining about not having a higher resolution. whats the matter with the 1400x900 because that is the one i ordered lol and on a final note does anybody know if the 9600M GT is GDDR3?? laptopmag only gave the dv7t a score of under 4000, but notebook check gave the 9600M GT GDDR3 a max score of 5760. im just trying to figure out what i can expect my dv7t to score on 3dmark06. i was hoping for around 5000 i kind of want to play crysis at medium-high settings w/o having to overclock the GPU. does anyone know about overclocking the mobile 9 series gfx card?? i would definitely invest in a good laptop cooler.

 

1400x900 is not a bad resolution per se, you may just find that your desktop is not as large compared to a higher resolution screen. I would have liked HP to offer a 1920x1200 screen, but at least there's a bump in resolution from the 9700 series.

Overclocking nvidia chips has been simple since the coolbits registry edit from way back, but you can get it now in a modified *.inf file for the drivers. Go here for updated video drivers.

GDDR2 vs GDDR3... with those scores, I'd vote GDDR2. But with the modified drivers, both core and memory can be overclocked to help out increase 3D performace.

 

so i went to the website...can you maybe walk me through how to get the correct file for my setup?? im a little confused on the difference between the inf files and the driver downloads and what each does please help!

 

i do alot of video encoding on my laptop, and on my work desktop with Vista it borks with EAC3TO, Ripbot64, XviD encoding, and various others. i can see why though, smaller programs like this dont go through the rigerous testing that the major players do, but hey, thats what i wanna use it for, i knwo what you mean about the "Friend of a friend" having the issue thing, but i can assure you, i have had issues first hand, and i know what i am doing.

and anyway, i dont wanna be told what O/S i must use. i should have a choice

 

Quick question: do HP laptops require a hard drive caddy? Ordered the dv7t with a single 320GB hdd so I can add a second later (at a fraction of the price).

Wimax is optional for the centrino 2 and wont be released until later in the year. It might then become a requirement. sorry I did not understand this. please explain:
it was announced that in summer there will be hp notebooks with quad core and with WIMAX support (echo peak), ( or HSPA) is This DV7T model this expected one?
or it is the same dual core (Core2 Duo) platform with the same WIFI link?

SHould I wait some more time or buy this?
will this DV7T cacht the signal from wimax ? or it ir works only of wifi signal?
whats the difference betwaen DV9700t and DV7T?

IF I buy this DV7T now, how soon will wimax,quadcore platforms will appear in the market and I will have to buy another one? WImax or HSPA is urgent for me.
I live in suburbia most of the time and here is no wifi signal.

Wimax integrated chipsets have not yet been released. The wimax/wifi capable chipset will be released later in the year, until then you wont see built-in. But you should be able to get USB/expresscard adapters. The built-in support for wimax will be bundled with the Wimax/wifi link 5350 mini pcix cards. This is an optional and upto the laptop manufacturer to include or not. In any case make sure your locale has wimax service, otherwise it is pretty much useless to have hardware but no network. As of now only Pakistan and South Korea have nationwide coverage.

BTW EVDO service(through verizon) is already available as an option for the new dv series and that should provide wireless access(in most places) as long as you have cellular coverage.

Quad core mobiles are still at the initial stages. There should only be one quad core cpu available by the end of the year and that will be the extreme edition and so would only feature in higher end gaming orienetd notebooks like the dell XpS series or the Sager/clevo notebooks. Hp should offer that option most likely with the HDX. Otherwise for quad core to go mainstream it will be atleast a year or more. So, unless you can wait a year it's not worthwhile waiting just for quad core.

As far as differences between the dv9700t and the dv7t are concerned -
The dv7t has the option for built in TV tuner, the dv9700t lacked this option.
The dv7t has and eSATA/USB combo port, the dv9700t lacked this as well.
The dv7t has a newer chassis design.
Ofcourse, the dv7t also gets newer chipsets, new cpu options(P series Penryns), support for DDR2 800 memory & newer graphics options.

 

Hey guys, does anyone know if the HP dv7 has an internal mini PCIe slot open? I'm thinking about the Intel Turbo memory. I know there are mixed reviews about it but I was wondering if anyone has heard if there is this slot in the laptop?

 

Has anyone considered any laptop coolers for this laptop? I'm highly considering one now because I ordered my dv7t with the 2.8GHz processor and the geforce 9600. Any suggestions, anyone?

hey mnp2005, I have ordered my dv7t , should be shipped the 4th I ordered the ZalmanNC200 for the laptop. I did loads of research and found out that picking a cooler has to be specific to the laptop. I found the manual for the dv7 and found the intake vents on the bottom. Then I looked for coolers that blew cold air into thoes vents. I belive the zalman will do the trick. I'm getting it in the mail today from newegg, i will post my general comments later on today, I dont have the laptop yet so idk about how all the vents will line up but I will tell you my best.

 

ha i did the same exact thing! except i didnt know where to find the manual, and i was wondering whether i needed a cooler that sucked out the hot air or blew in cold air. so i just went to best buy and first looked at the dv5 and then the other hp 17 inchers. i came to the conclusion that the dv7 would suck in air from the bottom. so i ALSO bought the zalman nc2000 from newegg because after reading many reviews i think this is the best or one of the best coolers on the market right now! maybe now i can overclock the gpu safely??
ive got the 2.53 GHz processor and the 9600M GT.
Does anybody know if heat is the only thing to worry about when overclocking??
And where did you find the manual for the dv7t??? ive been looking and cannot find it!

 

Did you get the black or silver? I went with silver cuz the whole laptop is chrome!! lol. I have the same processor and gpu man, It should be shipping to me on the 4th, how bout you?

i went with black. in the picture on newegg the silver one looked more white to me than silver. plus i just liked the black for some reason and thought it would at least match the top of the laptop. i think at least with the black nothing else will be shining and taking away any glory from this awesome laptop!! my laptop ships the 31st of july but should get to me by the 4th of august...which is my birthday i cant wait!

Nope, it uses DDR2. DDR3 is currently still expensive compared to DDR2 memory. You can get 4GB DDR2 memory for the price of 1GB DDR3 memory. So, right now it wont make it to mainstream notebooks but Lenovo and Fujitsu have released notebooks which use DDR3 memory but we should see it becoming more popular by the end of the year or early next year.

Turbo memory is pretty much useless technology. HP didn't adopt the first generation and I don't believe the second generation is going to provide any benefits.

 

Just received the cooler from the big brown truck (Love thoes guys). I plugged it in and it has desent cooling. I expected a little more, the configurations of the fans on the back create a sort of dull flow in the upper right of the holes. If the vent configurations are correct for the dv7 as the manual suggests, the gpu vent is in the upper left whick has ok air flow. The flow on the bottom of the cooler is much stronger than the upper holes. Mabye when you get a laptop on it it will force more air up. Hopefully. I love the looks and the size is exact to the dv7 spesifications, so thats a plus. The cooler is very cold. not room temp or cool, I would call it cold. The metal frame will do great for heat spreading, Overall I have a positive feeling about the cooler. I have already tried to take it apart to see if I could install more fans in the back but it is glued together lol. I'm a modder by blood Anyways Hopefully it will line up with the vents and all be good, very quiet cooler, and it holds up a tissue, except in the upper right. Hope this helps. I will post cooling date for this laptop and cooler after I receive the laptop. BTW: I called HP today about their price garentee and got $60 back. I would suggest you all do the same if you bought before the $150 instant rebate.

 

awesome! when you tested did you turn the fan speed all the way up?? i think when you get your laptop in you should just mess with it a little by shifting the laptop over the parts of the cooler that are the most efficient. say you want to cool the gpu or cpu just slide the laptop towards the bottom of the cooler. anyways i also think it will make a great cooler.

i'm looking to get this laptop....what kind of sound card does this unit have? i want to get the blu-ray player on this and wanted to know if i were to hook up my laptop to my A/V receiver via HDMI, if i would be able to play the HD audio formats (Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD, etc).

does anyone know how good the battery life is? and is the laptop light?

 

supposedly the new intel chip is much more efficient so that should make for better battery life and with the 9600M GT graphics card im pretty sure you can switch between integrated and dedicated graphics using hybrid SLI technology so when you arent playing games or running graphic intensive apps. you can switch to the integrated card, thus saving battery life. i would expect it has ok battery life. as far as weight i think its like 7-8 lbs. if you want something smaller, but with the same performance you could get the 15 inch dv5. its also cheaper.

 

How long usually before FedEx shows the expected delivery date? It still says "Shipment Exception" under status...

 

okay so i have a question for all the current dv7t owners out there.

i recently went to best buy and checked out the dv5t and i tested it out.

i noticed the silver track pad...i didnt really like it. it kind of stuck to my finger when i used it....

so does the dv7t have the same issue?

 

It looks to be one of the lighter 17" models, but be understanding that this is a 17" notebook, not a 12" ultra-portable model Under 8lbs ftw!

Edit: Using some google-fu seems to show a weight of 5.5lbs (I think that's w/o battery)

 

I have been researching laptops for the past few weeks and right now the HP dv7t is at the top of my list.

One thing that I noticed is that the upgrade price to 4GB of memory is quite high. I found 4GB of DDR2-800 notebook memory online for about $80. Would this memory work in the dv74?

Also, did anyone get the Infinity screen? Is it worth it? I plan to get the higher resolution but I'm not sure about the Infinity screen.

The infinity screen is worth it if you like style. It basically smooths the corners and edges of the screen so you don't have any perforations between the screen and the bezel (a very flat surface) and it looks nice.

I'm pretty sure that RAM will fit in the dv7t


Edit: I'm just waiting for some current owners to put up some damn pictures! I want to see user-pictures not crappy low-res review pictures.

Yes, we can. I did it with my dv4t although it is a dv7t thread....

 

After reading all the "mine shipped early" posts, I check on my order and.......Apparently my dv7t departed KUNSHAN CN (China) yesterday (via Fedex Next Day INTL) ... Just before the Olympics. Not bad, shipped 6 days earlier.

Raidenwow, just remember that the screen is one of the more difficult/ expensive items to replace later on. I always go for the best screen on my laptops.

In all my multitasking, I read your response to BigMike55 and totally missed the "Quote" part so I read it as you wondering if it was worth it for the 'nicer' screen.. So disregard my out from left field comment

 

I think our dv7's are all on the same rickshaw. Hopefully they don't get shanghai'd while in Shanghai!

 

I have been reading a lot of posts on the dv5t forum and it seems like a lot of their users have problems with the laptop getting hot. so i would suggest to all of the future dv7t owners to:

1) get a notebook stand or find a way to prop up the laptop an inch so that air can flow more efficiently underneath

2) invest in a good notebook cooler! i got the Zalman NC 2000 and i think it will be a good choice but i will post my thoughts after it and my dv7t come in

 

Please let me know how that cooler works with the dv7t tomorrow. If it keeps it nice and cool, i'll be buying one myself thanks

 

hey mnp2005, I bought the zalman NC 200 for my dv7t, I will let you know also, I have it at home and it looks like it will do great.

 

P.S. My dv7t just went through ANCHORAGE, AK !!!! Hopefully it will be on my door soon.
