Does anyone know if the dv7 has an s/pdif port in one or both of the headphone jacks? This document: h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01550113.pdf (page 5) seems to indicate that it may. I would imagine it would take a mini-TOSLINK cable if it did correct?

    so now my dv7t is @ 640gb's of storage :) :) :) :) ;)

i bought a 320 gb western digital harddrive from amazon for $83 (after shipping + tax)

and i bought a dv7t hard drive caddy from newmode.us for $34 after taxes + shipping

so for about $117, i've doubled the storage in my dv7t........ now i dont have to switch to an external (usb) drive to get what i need. everything i could want is on my laptop and no where else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, mine does. The IDT driver app reports it as such. I have not tested it however.

    yessir, that's the one.

it comes with a few screws also - four screws are used to mount the hard drive to the caddy, and two screws are used to install the hard drive into the laptop itself. the screws are different sizes too.

On the HP Drivers website, there are some updated drivers available (I compared the versions to mine using the device manager). Should I download all the ones from the site that are newer? Is there an easier way to do this?

    Thanks

    1. IS that configuration enough for video editing ? ( by tv tuner-change format, cut, join, record video files from mini dv cassete to laptop pc).
    2. When exchanging the laptop bought by coupon discount, will that coupon still work? how much time it takes to ship back and send another one?

how much times does your dv7 takes to startup until the last icon on the taskbar appears?

Mine took like 1:50 min :/

**** that's a really long time. mine takes between 45 seconds to a minute. i know it's not long but i havent timed it. you should remove anything that's not useful from startup.

i have like 7 icons that appear on the taskbar / by the clock area. they are all for necessary things - audio, synaptics pointing device, logitech mouse app for my wireless mouse, daemon tools for dvd drive emulation, and some others.

things like AIM, adobe acrobat etc should be removed because you dont really use/need those running ALL THE TIME. but that's in my opinion.

Yeah i know, i disable a lot of things using the msconfig, and another performance post around here and to the most i reduced the time from 2:25min to 1:50min and i just have enable my avg antivirus, comodo firewall, spybot software and the normal stuff required in order to start the notebook right.

I had deleted all the temporary information files, disable indexing service, clock taskbar from the wallpaper, downloaded the lastest drives from hp, disable autoplay function, some services that i researched that i didn't need, used ccleaner, windows one care software, defrag using smart defrag, clean it from any possible virus and adware, decrease the delay in the windows logo loading, etc...

Just pending to disable the aero and disabling the visual efects to the minimum. I have the intel P7350 dual core, 4GB ram, 320 HDD, 9600 GT, vista 64 bits.

Nevertheless my prior computer was so laggy that took like 10 min in order to be ready to work it, so it's ok for now 1:40min xD.

Another suggest in order to make faster the startup?

Nobody knows about tv tuners?( my above questions are left withot attention)
    I wonder :

    1. hp TV tuner which comes with option with dv7t , is it an express card which can be inserted and removed when not needed or it cannot be removed and is soldered integrated inside?

3, which is faster tv tuner for video editing and recording- express card, card bus, usb or pci-e? which one of them can be connected to desktop pc and laptop both?

2.It is said that exchange and return time is 21 days.
This 21 days we have to count from the date of placing an order ( HP online shopping), or from the date of arrival of the item?

    1) it is inside the laptop itself. to attach your cable tv cable or an antenna, you plug in an adapter to the port on the laptop itself. it's a small port, by the power cable, on the back, right hand side of the unit.

    2) it's 21 days from the day it's delivered to your place.

    3) i duno

The included antenna with the tuner is pretty weak. If you really want OTA, get a better antenna.

You shouldn't have to send it out for repair. I myself have just gone through 3 brand new DV7 laptops because of screen issues. There has gotta be some sort of vendor issue cause 2 of my screens came with some sort of weird grey blotch in the middle and the 3rd one had incredibly parabolic lighting effect causing it to be dark in several places. Rather than make me send it to repair, i had them send me new ones. If you run into this issue again, just escalate to a case manager, they will authorize a new one, usualy with some upgraded parts for your trouble.

Ubuntu 8.10 works great on the dv7t. The only problem I encountered was a sound issue with the hda intel chip. Adding enable_msi=1 to sound options eliminated the problem. Everything else works, but I have not tested the web cam yet. FYI for those considering trying Ubuntu, and Ubuntu is way more stable then Vista SP1 has been.

It is a mini PCI card inserted in the drive bay area to the right of them if it is upside down. You can search the forum for the service manual, it is great for finding little tidbits of this nature. it has 3 mini PCI slots, one for the tuner, one spare, one for the wifi.

    1. They're right... there is no point in getting faster RAM because you won't be able to adjust the speed of the FSB since it's locked...

    2. Nope you can't overclock the processor... but even if you can overclock it, it's not recommended as cooling in these notebooks are not sufficient enough to get anything substantial...

    3. Yes it can... you can use Rivatuner to do that... but as I said above... you'll get marginal increases in speed as heat becomes an issue... and the 9600M GT on the DV7 uses DDR2... so the GPU is starved of memory bandwidth anyway... so overclocking won't give you that much of a boost...

    4. You can put in 7200RPM drives... or if you have the money... go for high-end Solid State HDs... you get the speed at the expense of storage space.

    5. Notebook coolers are beneficial but not absolutely necessary... as with all computer equipment, more cooling is never a bad thing ;). You can also try to undervolt the processor to lower the CPU temps...

I got the same laptop than you, but i have not any 5.1 sound system yet in order to make a test. But i will recommend to update your drivers from the hp website as the IDT HD Sound and quickplay updates and seek for the best configuration that full fit your needs.

I have found some troubles while trying to see the blue ray movie in both displays at the same time (laptop & tv). Probably you should make your default display and sound into the hdmi connection in order to get the best performance and quality of sound and picture.

    Good luck

I've found that just raising the back of the dv7t a couple of centimetres while running 3D apps makes for better cooling and less fan blowing.

So i've run into a little interesting problem. I'm watching a movie on my tv via the HDMI output and it's setup as an extended desktop to the right. Anyways, when i close the lid, it shuts off the primary screen and now my HDMI output becomes my primary, this shifting all my windows to 1 screen. This of course changes my resolution and messes up my movie. Any thoughts on why this would be happening and how to get it to stop?

    go to your display properties

and at the option called 'select what to do when the lid is closed' ---

set that value to 'do nothing'

i had this problem a lot too but now you can set it so that when you close the screen on the laptop, nothing happens.

    Hello all,

I just bought a dv7t a little more than a month ago, and am having a serious problem with it. Hopefully, someone can point me in the right direction, either here or at the HP site. Ultimately, I may have to call the service line and exercise my warranty.

    Problem:

I am getting random shutdowns that looks like the notebook is going into hibernation. I think this is the case because when I restart the computer by pressing the power button, I get the screen that says "Resuming Windows..."

When the problem starts, I see the following events occur:

    1. First, the screen goes dark
    2. The audio mutes, and the indicators go red
    3. The wi-fi turns off
    4. The disk spins for a minute, then the notebook shuts off

This problem has occurred during the following:

    1. While running the Windows User Experience rating test
    2. While watching Netflix Instant Watch
    3. While playing games
    4. While running a system backup the Maxtor OneTouch4+

In addition to my specs at the bottom. I'm also connecting the following devices:

    1. the USB wireless keyboard receiver that comes with the docking station
    2. a USB Microsoft wireless mouse receiver (I don't like the HP mouse that came with the docking station)
    3. a 4Gb Sandisk Cruzer Platinum flash drive dedicated to ReadyBoost

Any ideas about what is happening? Any advice is greatly appreccated.

    Thanks,
    Steve

    Lastly, here are my specs:

HP Pavilion dv7t-1000 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC
    Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.4 GHz)
    17.0" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Infinity Display (1680 x 1050)

I usually set my wallet under the back when I run games. I'm glad my trick is used by other people. :)

Well I'm getting a new Dv7t as the finial result from 2 previous attempts to repair my 9500t which wouldn't you know failed about 2 weeks after a year of ownership( widespread problem with the nvidia 8600m gs ) which would require a motherboard change but they kept trying to fix it by other means which would last about a week before the display went out again.
I wasn't allowed to upgrade anything and the computer technically costs quite a bit less then what i paid originally but even though its on the lower end of some of the setups you guys had i'm basically going to end up with a better processor and graphics card( t7500 to the P8400 and the 8600mGS to the 9600GT) so I can live with that.

The part i hate is setting up the new system. (I'm really into streamlining and tweaking like many of you and you know how time consuming it can be) I have a copy of my 9500t on the second hard drive created with norton ghost. Does anyone know if i install the second hard drive and then run ghost on the new computer will that work or does ghost only work on the same computer?

    Coupla' quick Q's guys -

1] Has the issue involving the multimedia soft-keys + Vista 64b been cleared up? IOW, do the keys function, freeze, or are disabled?

2] For non-gaming, non-Photoshop use, would the base Intel 4500MHD graphics work well with the High-Def Display (1680 x 1050) upgrade? I will be doing ordinary multimedia stuff like watching DVDs and streaming video (no video editing).

    Thank You!

    1. I don't have any of the problems with the multimedia/function keys

    2. It'd be fine for movie watching and that kind of thing, even at that resolution. I don't know about blue ray playback though. It might stutter.

    ^^

    TY Bill!

1] So then 64b multimedia soft-key compatibility is fine...excellent (IIRC, the issue was 64b specific).

2] I don't intend to get Blue Ray.

FWIW, I recently picked up a Black Friday Special DV7z (AMD X2 TL-60, 4GB, 250GB, GeForce 7150M, 1440 x 900 - 3 items per store) at Office Depot for $599 - $120 MIR = $479 USD. It was purely a spur-of-the-moment decision while I was in the store for another purchase, since it has Holiday "Gift Receipt" return privliges thru January 14th.

It suffers from the media keys/Vista 64b issue (it sometimes freezes when invoking the softkeys), but I have yet to try a BIOS upgrade. Oddly enough, the issue doesn't occur if Windows Media Player is open, even if WMP is not active and simply idling on the taskbar. I suspect this is somehow DRM/64b related.

I'm partial to Intel Core 2 architecture, so am considering returning the DV7z and building a custom DV7t.

I bought a dv7-1135nr from best buy last month. Before that I had a fujitsu. I miss it. So I'm seeing how this HP plays out.

I am a fan of INTEL. This is my first AMD processor computer couldn't afford the intel one LOL... I have notice on occassion that my IE would freeze while browsing and just stay on the page until I close it out and it gives me options if I want to wait for it to respond, or close out the program, or see if there are solutions. It annoys the heck out of me.

    Anyone else having this issue?

Use a different browser :p, IE is slower and have more laggy moments... Probably you should update to the most current software and drivers (windowsupdate & hp website)

Use firefox or chrome. Both are good browsers and the chrome is the fastest one but without the valuable extensions of the firefox.

Also remember to maintain your laptop security and performance with the best programs (cleanups, free virus, spybots, defrags, etc) Those you could found around the posts in this amazing website.

    Good luck,

Has anyone upgraded to the new F.21 Bios? Since i upgraded the other day, I can no longer get a proper reading of the CPU core temperature. It stays fixed at whatever the first reading was when the computer starts. All the other temps come in. I tried reading it with CPUID, RMClock, and SpeedFan and they all stay fixed constantly.
