I went into device manager and disabled the reader from powering off when the computer sleeps. That fixed it for me.

You can disable the reader in device manager if you don't want to use it.

I have it and I like it. I can watch both cable and over the air HD broadcast.

I have win7 pro x64. I'm using XP mode to connect to some devices that don't have 64 bit drivers. I don't have to reboot the machine into another OS, it's all integrated.

Thanks for the info chipgoon! Looks like I may just nix the fingerprint reader. Nobody else will be using this computer besides me, anyways.

What area are you from? I'm from NJ so I'd imagine I can get some over-the-air broadcasts from NYC and Philly. It would be pretty slick to have that option.

I guess I'll probably spring for the Win7 Pro then. I need to still be able to play Transport Tycoon Deluxe!!! :D

So is there any difference between using VirtualBox with a Windows XP virtual machine and the "XP mode" in windows 7 pro?

I ordered the 500GB 7200 rpm with mine, and just found out that it's two separate 250GB drives. Bummer. How much weight does that add to the laptop?

Mine is due to ship tomorrow and the wait is killing me.

Are you sure? I started one of the online chats with one of their techs to ask about that and they told me it is a single 500gb drive. I even asked them to check twice, and they said it's one drive and one empty bay.

I sure hope you're right. I got this info from going to shopping.hp.com's dv7t quad website, clicking on the "specs" tab, scrolling down to "hard drive", and clicking on the "help me decide" option - it says 250GB x2 for the 500GB 7200RPM option.

You're right that's what it says... I didn't see that when I asked the question. But they did tell me that the 500gb is a single drive. Sorry, don't know what to tell you, but let us know when you get it ...

Either way it isn't that bad. If you were planning on adding another drive yourself like an SSD then you've already got the mounting caddy (~$50 USD), and a spare 250gb drive to do with as you see fit...

I haven't used virtual box. I would guess XP mode has additional integration.

You can run XP-mode apps individually without launching the full desktop. When you install an app in XP it exports it to you windows 7 programs list, under Windows Virtual PC. I don't know how good is the sharing of ports and disks with virtual box, it gets automatically configured in windows 7 pro.

I hate to say it but you will probably have to wait for your Dell to arrive, and wait, and wait. I'm browsing this thread trying to decide if I want to cancel my 2 month old order for the Dell Studio XPS 16. Dell customer service sets the gold standard in poor customer service, and I'm pretty sure they invented the "run around".

What made it even more confusing for me is that the "free upgrade" to 500gb didn't list it as (2x500gb) like the bottom two options had.

Moot now for me, since they're back to only offering the 320gb.

The coupon expires 12/6 now, so I assume that's when they'll change it again. Maybe I'll wait to see if they re-offer the BluRay ROM upgrade again...

    Hi,
Just wanted to ask something to those who got their dv7's from Best Buy. Does it come with 1x500 GB or 2x250GB? Hoping its the latter.

    Cheers.

I did and I believe it was just ONE 500GB hard drive, but you always can partition it. So yeah only the 1x500GB.

    I bought a pretty dv7.
    4Go RAM, i7 ... impressive setup.

BUT my OEM windows7 premium only sees 2Go RAM :-(

I read here and there about memory remap, or other things like that.
there isn't anything in the bios F.04 (last one) etc

    any ideas? help ?

Haha. I cancelled on my SXPS - I think it's a nice machine but the delays, the power adaptor problems and general cluelessness of its customer service reps was too much. In contrast, I ordered my HP on 11/25, and it's due to be shipped out today (fingers crossed).

Great! I hope HP give me this too.

That's weird. Are you sure there's actually 4GB in there? There's some memory tests you can run from the bios, that will probably tell you how much memory the machine actually has.

Not sure, mine still hasn't shipped yet. I spoke to an HP guy today who told me the order has to go from China to Alaska, and then from Alaska to Tennessee, and that takes 2 days, and then it goes from there to wherever you live, that's all I can offer.

I noticed that the base price of the dv7t quad has dropped by $50 from $1099.99 when I bought it on 11/25 to $1049.99. I called up Customer Service and was able to get the $50 from HP under their pricing guarantee ( http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/terms.do). Maybe I was just lucky, but it could be worth trying. I'm pretty sure it was still $1099.99 on Black Friday too.

Which phone # do you call to request this? I purchased with the $400 coupon and the price before instant savings was $1,399, but now it's $1,259. Do you think I can squeeze any discount from them?

I have the new DELL XPS 1645 with i7.
i7 should work at multipliers from 7x-12x or more under turbo boast, we have a problem that under stress the processor only hits 7x and stays there.
    Could you please run
Furmark at the same time run Prime95 and monitor the multipliers using i7Turbo which is a program that comes with Real Temp 3.4.
Please post a snapshot of the multipliers or a just report it.
    Thank you

I'll be interested to see what people get. This was one of the reasons I cancelled on my SXPS1645. The dv7t has a 120W adaptor instead of the SXPS1645's 90W, so hopefully the adaptor won't be an issue.

Speaking of the SXPS1645, I switched to HP because I was sick of Dell's delay. My dv7t was due to ship 12/3, and I called up on 12/3 and 12/4, was told that it was fine, that FedEx hadn't updated their shipping tracking. Then got an email that my order was delayed, and that the revised shipping date was 12/5 OR no later than 7 business days from my original 12/3. FAR OUT...I need this laptop before the 12/22. HP did send me a $50 coupon though. I only have standard 5-7 day shipping, so I hope my dv7t comes in time...

    Hi guys,

I'm based in Australia and have ordered my DV7T laptop a couple of weeks ago and should be receiving it soon :) This is a very handy thread which i've taken the time to read all the juicy info in it.

I just have one question at this point.. I need to purchase the power lead that this laptop uses. From what I can tell from older HP DV7 laptops uses a cloverleaf power mains lead as seen here:

    http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=PS4120

But can someone please confirm this before I go out and purchased one.

    Thankyou

    I'm ticked at myself.

I let the reliability review on squaretrade rattle me this morning (HP being the worst at 25% failure rate by 3rd year) with Asus and Toshiba being the best at 15% 3rd year failure rate.

I canceled the order that was to ship on the 9th this morning. After researching Asus and Toshiba this evening, the dv7t quad had the best specs and now I've realized that I will have lost my Bing rebate, plus other free upgrades.

    Can you cancel a cancellation?

    Can you cancel a cancellation?[/QUOTE]

My experience from last week is " NO you cannot cancel a cancellation". Your only hope is that it ships prior to the cancellation making it's way through their system.
I ordered at DV7t on Black Friday. Two days later I found what I believed to be a better and cheaper deal for a DV8t. I canceled my DV7t. I was told by CS that it would take 24-48 hours for the cancellation to process and there was a very good chance that it was too late and that the laptop would ship.

On Monday morning I realized that the DV8t did not have LED back lighting. I called CS to see if I could reinstate my DV7t order and cancel the DV8t. I talked with a supervisor who told me that they would try their best to let the order go through. I called back Monday afternoon and then again on Tuesday to check the status of the order. Each time I was told that they were trying their best.

On Friday I receive an email stating that both orders were canceled. I then spoke with a CS agent, her supervisor and then a manager. All three stated that once an order is canceled there is no method to reinstate it. This was HP's policy.

Don't get me wrong this was my screw-up. However it would have saved me several hours on the phone if one of the 1st three CS had a clue about their policy.

Waiting for the next sale and can't understand why the DV8t doesn't have LED.

If the HDX series had LED backlight and the DV8 doesn't then I'm starting to see a pattern. Its obvious they don't want the pavilion line to be their 'premium series' as this is why they NOW have the Envy series.

Another perfect example is the blacklit keyboard thing. The pavilion LINE IS NOT THE PREMIUM SERIES, the HDX WAS and NOW THE ENVY. HP should have put the i7 in the HDX line and said forget the Envy.

I have been, and it relates to this:

The same problem with the DV6t applies to the DV7t. The bios is rubbish, it's not ACPI standards compliant, and the bios menu lacks a lot of common features, not because they aren't supported, but because they've just been made inaccessible.

You can install linux, but it won't manage temperatures properly because it won't be receiving accurate information from the bios, and you'll damage your system. There are ways to manually edit the ACPI tables, but it's not for the faint of heart, and you run the risk of irreversibly borking your bios.

HP has yet to confirm they will be releasing updated firmware to fix any of this.

Apart from that, the thing is wonderfully quiet, cool, and powerful. The screen is very reflective, but also extremely bright, so it is still legible in well-lit areas. I really like just about everything about the computer when I'm using Windows 7/Vista, but unfortunately only 1/3 of my computer usage takes place in windows, so in my case this computer is only worth 1/3 of its value since I can't install the other operating systems I need.

At least the VT option is accessible in the bios (and not much else)

Oh, and the left side of the keyboard is a little flappy, which is annoying, but you can DIY-fix that pretty easily if you just take the keyboard out and put a rubber piece on that side. Only a minor inconvenience compared to the bios issue.

notebook came in today. screen looks good, but i'm no professional so still to be decided. keyboard types smooth. bloatware seems to slow things down. will probably do recoverydiscs and clean install when i get more time. just wanted to say overall, i'm very impressed with all of it so far. the screen is so big i almost have to move my head to see the other side. the glossyness of the machine seems toned down and doesn't smudge as easily as the dv6 model.

Hey congrats on your purchase! I found the coupon you mentioned, called HP, and managed to get a $100 refund for the price difference on what I paid a few weeks ago :D

Great. The system I ordered on 11/25, EDD 12/3, delayed to 12/5, is now due to be built on 12/18. SXPS1645 deja vu...

Anyone know what kind of ram is in the dv7t quad. Im feeling remorse in not upgrading to 8GB ram, and want to upgrade now :(

Ok, so I've bailed on this laptop as well as the SXPS1645. Sick of the delays, and have to get one before I return home to Australia. I'm not a gamer, but I ordered a Asus G51J off Amazon instead because it's actually "in stock". Good luck to the rest of you.
