    Aloha!

First post here, happy to have found this forum.

I have decided to get one of these HP's and all of the reviews and other info is greatly appreciated.

Hey timesquaredesi looks like you made a good choice there. I am looking at almost the exact computer that you just ordered but having a hard time finding a current coupon to get the price down. Hopefully I can place the order soon.

i found the $400 off coupon here - $400 coupon for HP dv7 Select Edition Quad Core i7 | HP Pavilion dv7t reviews - LogicBUY . the coupon code itself is NBP426577 -- you enter that after you put the laptop into the shopping cart.

i am stoked. my current machine is doing wonderfully after 2 years of heavy use - about 4-5 hours every single day (jesus christ, i spend that much time on my computer at home?!?!?!) lol.... anyway, i cant wait for the new one...

Ok so I did it. The coupon expired but I called the HP call center and they were still willing to hook me up so I simply had to have someone over the phone help me. Melissa was a great help!

I paid a total of $1354.96 for everything. The processor was a must but I could have saved a good chunk of change if I did without the dual hard drives, battery, infinity display, bluetooth and the bag but kinda got carried away!

I am very happy because looking at some of the prices and specs of other brands of laptops you can't get this kinda power for this price anywhere else.

Part of me wanted to wait another couple of months or so for the new wave of technology about to hit but I need this thing for a new job I'm starting so...

so amazon dropped the price of the intel 80gb ssd drives down to $179 and i picked one up to put into the new dv7tse that i ordered on sunday - the specs are in my sig.

i swear to god, with this drive, if the laptop does not boot into windows in 10 seconds, im returning it....

intel ssd + my currrent dv7t boots to windows in about 24 seconds. i think the 8mb processor cache and the fact that the ram is DDR3 should make the new system boot faster.... let's see what happens.

I got my dv7tse a few days ago and was surprised and pleased to see Intel Wireless Display in the program listing.

Yesterday I bought the Netgear Push2TV adapter for $29.99 at Best Buy. (normally it's $99.99).

Installation took about 20 minutes total ( you need to update a couple of drivers).

    I think it's fantastic.

I don't know why HP keeps this feature a secret.

Do other people use Intel Wireless Display?

Hello everyone, I have been following this discussion and decided to purchase a dv7t SE based on all of the positive opinions :D . Here are my specs:

    • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    • System Recovery DVD with Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    • Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-740QM Quad Core processor (1.73GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) w/Turbo Boost up to 2.93 GHz (Worth an extra $100 over 720?)
    • 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 graphics [HDMI, VGA] - For Quad Core Processors
    • FREE Upgrade to 8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 640GB 7200RPM Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    • 50% OFF! One 6 Cell (standard) and One 9 Cell (over-sized) Lithium Ion Battery
    • 17.3" diagonal HD+ High-Definition HP LED BrightView Widescreen Display (1600 x 900) (read too many Infinity complaints)
    • FREE Upgrade to Blu-ray player & Lightscribe SuperMulti DVD burner
    • HP TrueVision Webcam and Fingerprint Reader
    • Intel Wireless-N Card with Bluetooth
    • Standard Keyboard

I'm bummed to learn that my choice in processors does not provide Intel Wireless Display or switchable graphics, I WISH the keyboard was backlit, and a USB 3.0 would be nice. Still, I am psyched to have a portable computer that realistically replaces my desktop. How did the guy in this review: YouTube - HP dv7 Select Edition Laptop Review get a black case with backlit keys?? dv7 vs. dv7t maybe...

SO, experts -- does this look like a balanced system? I will be doing photo/video editing and solid model design (Inventor/Solidworks). It doesn't ship until 12/8 so I suppose there's time to change it if something doesn't look right. Thanks!

It is balanced. Upgrade 740QM only the video rendering might justify it. Now depends how frequently you do rendering and how important is it - if you aren't hard pressed and projects aren't big, you can do rendering while working in Solidworks.
The improvement calculation can be said to be linear 1.6ghz x4 Vs 1.73Ghz x4 since they are same family CPU's.
If it was me i would wait for USB3 versions and Nvidia for CUDA acceleration but if that is not necessary to you there is no issue.

Bullit, thank you for the feedback. You know the dilemma, wait for all of the cool new stuff to become affordable and then there's more new stuff on the horizon. Plus, I think it would be extremely difficult to top the deal I got.
How much of an improvement do you think the new Nvidia will be over my ATI?

Just depends if your rendering engine use CUDA, and first of all obviously if HP will put Nvidias in it. If it does and it works it can be a couple times faster.

HP will be using Ati again. I remember seeing service manuals of their upcoming notebooks mentioning the Ati 6000 series. Don't know the links anymore, but I'm pretty sure it's a reliable source.
Second, the Ati 6000 series really look like a rebrand to me. Specs are almost identical compared to the 5000 series. At least for the notebook segment of their 6000 series.

omg... my laptop came in today and i am in love. the screen's viewing angles are way more "restrictive" than my 1st gen dv7ts.... but the display is gorgeous. im reading the new york times on it right now and it's very comfortable at medium brightnes..

im installing unreal tournement 3 on it right now so i can run some "tests" hahaha

one complaint - the power supply brick is the biggest thing i've seen in years. it's is monsterous! THANK GOD my laptops almost never leave my desk... i am sure this is a major complaint of people that travel a lot with their machines...

aside from that, im on cloud 9

I am kind of confused, I ordered my laptop on the 22nd it was set to ship on the third of dec and it hasn't been shipped yet. I am not sure why such a large discrepancy in the time between us. I was hoping I would have mine by the third which from what I understand is the usual way it goes. It would have to ship today for sure in order for me to have it by the 3rd otherwise it will be the 6th at the earliest.

I believe that Dec 3 will be the date it is supposed to ship from HP, you'll get it in either 5-7 or 2 business days, depending on what shipping option you picked. I ordered yesterday, with a ship date of Dec 9, and I should get it 5-7 business days after that - so the week of Dec 13 (hopefully).

I understand how its supposed to work, but from what I have read on this site and others you usually will get your computer by the ship date. A person on this post a few up had a dec3 ship date and received his yesterday. I had expected I would get it by then because that seems to be very common.

Man, that would be GREAT - my dh was not thrilled with the long time. I was waffling between the dv7 and Toshiba Qosmio yesterday with the Cyber Monday sales. He thought the extra 4GB RAM and 140MB HDD trumped the GPU increase of the 460M in the Toshiba. Plus, the dv7 was $100 cheaper even with the extra battery at 50% off, though it didn't come with the free 500GB external drive. I had both configured with backpacks and mice.

Right now, it looks like I'll be getting the backpack and mouse long before the PC. I need it soon because of a move overseas in early Jan, and want maximum time to play with it to make sure it works correctly.

Keep us posted on when it actually ships, and I'll hope it's early for you (and will translate into early for me) :D .

Ok so I am excited! I ordered my computer on November 23rd and it said the computer would be built by December 6th. A couple of days ago the status changed to "in production". Now I see the status has been updated again and the computer has been shipped. The estimated delivery date is December 6th. I am happy to see this because I had planned on flying to the east coast for the holidays. I was expecting to be cutting it close with the laptop being delivered a day or two or possibly even the day I was supposed to leave.

    I'll keep you posted.

Has anyone else noticed a "compression effect" on their DV7 with Beats?
Whenever I'm listening to something and a loud treble hit occurs, the volume is scaled back for the instant.
    It is driving me nuts!

I got my new dv7tse earlier this week, and so far I'm pleased with it. The Beats audio sounded terrible out of the box, but it's better now that I've tinkered with the equalizer settings. It would have been nice if they have included more preset options. Overall, I think the audio on my old dv9700 was far superior. I'm also not enthralled by Windows 7--I must be one of the few people who actually preferred Vista!

At any rate, it ultimately came down to the dv7tse and the Envy. I originally ordered an Envy and then canceled it after it got delayed several weeks. I think I made the right choice; the Envy had a better screen (I ordered one with the 1920x1080 resolution), but the dv7t's screen looks great at its native 1600x900 resolution and the image is fantastic on my new external 23" monitor too.

I am opposed to all things Vista, I wouldn't use the disk as a coaster in fear that it would ruin the glass that was resting on it.

Mine is supposed to be here in a couple of hours.. by 4:30 local time and its almost 2 now.

edit -- here now, looks great and runs smoothly.. cant wait to test it out without all the bloatware on it.
Screen is beautiful and no dead pixels I can spot.. working on doing the list for the out of the box thread now.

Okay, after another day with the laptop, I'm really happy with it. Windows 7 isn't so bad after all. :) If anyone is having problems with their wireless internet, let me know. There's apparently a problem with Windows 7 not connecting quickly to wireless networks after coming out from sleep. After researching and trying out different solutions for days, I think I finally found the fix to make the wireless connect immediately after coming out of sleep.

The big thing for me is how quiet it is, the writer was almost completely silent and even the fan is just a soft hum. The keyboard for me is very nicely laid out plenty of space between the keys and feels good on your hand. The screen is huge and I am really likely windows 7. I just got it today but it was definitely worth the money so far, everything is very smooth and the processor and ram make it move very fast. I have had to do a bunch of reboots because of reinstalling drivers and windows updates etc.. and its been an actual pleasure because it goes so fast. I highly recommend this laptop to everyone was a great investment and hopefully will last for several years.

    Okay, here's what I did:

-Open the Network and Sharing Center

-Click on Change Adapter Settings (should be listed on left)

-Right click on your main network connection (mine was called "Wireless Network Connection" by default), and select Properties

-Uncheck the box next to Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6). Click Okay.

-Do the same for any other network connections on your computer (my laptop, for example, came with "Wireless Network Connection 2" and "Wireless Network Connection 3" as defaults. I don't know why we need more than one, so I also just went ahead and disabled them.)

    -You may need to reboot.

After doing that, my wireless connection is now available instantaneously when I come out of sleep. Hopefully it'll work for you too.

    Hi,

I'm a newbie here. I just ordered the 17" dv7tse last week to replace my dv9700 that died. One of my main uses will be editing video and somehow I missed that the dv7tse doesn't have a FireWire port. Is it possible to add an IEEE 1394 port on this model? Or do I need to cancel my order? Thanks in advance and I apologize for the probably stupid question.

Maybe via express card that you have to buy. I don't know if usb firewire exists.

Yes, that's what I mean! An express card, is there a slot for the card? It doesn't mention any available slots in the specs. I'm wondering if I will be able to add a port via express card. If not I need to cancel the order. Thanks!

Didn't one of the recent dv7t models have firewire and/or an express card slot? I'm surprised they removed both. I was about the pull the trigger on this one, but also didn't catch that this had been removed until reading this thread. (thought I was looking at a recent model on youtube which had both, but I guess that wasn't very recent).

so i returned my newly ordered, insanely decked out dv7tse today.... why....?

I spent about $2k on a machine 2+ years ago - the dv7 that's in my signature... and with the ssd, i have it booting in about 24 seconds.... i bought another ssd and put it into the new machine and it booted into windows in an astounding 14 seconds!!! it boots in 16 seconds after i installed all my apps.

while i am into over kill and specing out a machine as crazily as i can, i just thought that i went way over the top... i spent $1600 on a machine that i didn't really need.... i really wanted it but my current dv7 is a workhorse - its fast, boots in 24 seconds, stable and never had an issue with the hardware....

i am sad... the new machine was an absolute beast and the LED screen was gorgeous... oh well, im getting my $1600 back and i'll put it towards a machine when i need it - maybe in a couple of years when im done with grad school.

You can't have such volatility with money, some day might be something you can't return back and potentially more serious.

I hope this is the correct thread. I bought my parents a dv7t computer and just got the shipping notification. The original ship date/build date was December 28th, so this is much sooner than I had thought it would be shipped.

When I bought the computer, I didn't see any recommended laptop cases for this laptop in the HP store, so I decided to get one later. Later is now, apparently.

Does anyone have any advice for a case for this computer? Will this computer fit in a case for a 17" computer? Or is it just that little bit too big for a case like this one?

Bullit - it was an impulse buy =/ and my need to return it was based more on guilt than on money... I considered keepnig it and seling my current box for $500 but I found no takers on craigslist. so instead of having the new unit on my desk and the other one collecting dust, i decided to keep the one i already had.

Yep. Yeah selling the old one for that price would be good.

Got mine thursday. I've used it for a total of four hours. So far windows explorer has quit, it has locked up tight five times, and I've had two blue screens. Advice?

OK, I've fooled around with my new dv7tse for a couple of weeks and decided to try out HP QuickWeb. Turns out it's nowhere to be found. There is no HP QuickWeb program on my dv7tse.

The website says HP QuickWeb is one of the features, do you guys have it on your dv7tse?

ps: It's not a major drawback to me, I just wanted to see what it looked like.

Not really the response I expected, lol, but that's what I had in mind. Why should I have to fix a brand new pc that cost this much? I don't even know if I'm willing to give it another go after this kind of first impression. Btw its sitting here locked up AGAIN as I type this on my phone...

Edit- tech support walked me through a check of the hd and I reinstalled windows. It crashed again 20 minutes later. It was cranking out 115° air just sitting there until it finally shut itself down ten minutes later. It is going back.

Don't mess with it, return it. Something is wrong.

As far as getting another one, that's up to you. Mine has been rock solid in the 3 weeks I've had it......knock on wood.
