Any of you firewire capture any HD/SD video? If you have on your 64bit Win7 DV8t, do you have any issues with your video edit software capturing?

Theres a firewire issue with Win7. It causes some camcorders not to be recognized or work properly with the edit software. The fix supposedly is to go into the driver part of the firewire card and change the driver from the default Win7 driver to legacy. I did that and my camcorder still cannot capture.

I think that and a SSD option would be the consensus here.

Congrats on your purchase!!!! I fully recommend reinstalling Windows. It will run way smoother. If you don't have time to do that, then proceed by installing the bloatware with C Cleaner. Amazing program. Will clean your registry and its free PLUS uninstall your programs and clean the left over registry files.

Al that software is backed up in the swsetup folder located on drive C. Back that whole folder up then reload Windows then install the programs YOU NEED like those programs.

    @ Matt
You can actually use CCleaner to delete all the crapware off the notebook automatically, meaning that you don't have to individually delete each piece of crap off?

I too have the same video problem. But HP tech support told me to return the notebook. I am now waiting for an exchange. After reading your video issues. I just canceled.

Except mine stopped working completely after exiting a game twice.

The first time it, I quit a game and I waited like 30 min and it never came back on. Sigh! Second time the display came back on after 5 min. The third time after I reinstalled the drivers, it flickered twice, and came back on, this one was right after a fresh reboot. The fourth time, it flickered but then came back after a few more min. The fifth time, the display never came back on, but that too was after exiting a game. I waited another 30 minutes.

Can't deal with a display that keeps shutting off, so simply thought it was best to return it. And to make it worse HP customer service was like "I see you have ordered a powerful configuration but the reason for your cancelation is that our products does not meet your expectations and that you expected too much out of our products." Sigh.

I do like HP though, so I probably will reorder later.

No laptop is going to be perfect!

The screen itself is FINE, try adjusting the DPI to 100%.

All things considered, I am still very pleased with mine. People just need to understand that not only are you getting a totally new designed laptop, you are also getting one of the first i7 quad machines on the market and also they totally new Windows 7 operating system.
There are many things that might need tweaking to get them where you want. No laptop is going to please everyone right out of the box.

I have an issue with the fingerprint reader not being recognized when coming out of sleep mode. But it doesn't bother me, I realize that nothing is going to be 100% perfect. I deal with it and enjoy the rest of this awesome machine.

Exactly!!!! I know that in time updates and fixes will be applied. Like the iTunes thing.

However I do believe that HP and other manufacturers should have tested everything a little more than they did before releasing.

so you are telling us Vista is a perfect OS . Many products get rushed to market so they can capture market share . I haven't received my machine yet , but I would expect some software issues . And updates will be posted to address many issues .

No I wasn't implying that at all. I simply said it would have been better if they fully tested these laptops a little more with all of this new technology. Vista is by far the worst IMO. Millennium Edition runs better than Vista did on my new computer 2 years ago lol.

I opened my computer and I started uninstalling bloatware. I think I uninstalled something important.
I heard the startup sound when I first turned my computer on but now I have no audio. I reinstalled the driver and tried headphones. When I right click and click Screen resolution an error message pops up. Explorer.exe Class not registered. System restore does not work either.

Hopefully System 'Recovery' is still intact.

Hit your start button, Programs, and hopefully Recovery Manager is there. Go through it and see if that helps anything.

    Good luck

Sorry so late with a response, Ice.

Mine is showing up as Generic too. Same boat. I don't remember what it was or if it was the Generic pnp.

Hey Ice- I ditched Cyberlink Power DVD outright. I did an update and things were never the same. Reinstalled and same stuff even after a good registry cleaning, too.

I ended up buying Arcsoft TotalMedia3 Platinum and it works very well. I'm in the process of installing a newer Nvidia driver too. I'm betting that the player now will not give me an error like Cyberlink did.

Update: 195.62 gives the same cyberlink error but this one is more specific. Overlay error. Testing further.
Update2: Suckkkkkkkkkkkkk. Back to the drawing board and default drivers.

IF your system restore doesn't work by you hitting I think it is F11 when the computer is booting then you can still access the partition as long as its still there.

    -Right click on my computer
    -Manage
-Disk Management (which is under storage)
    -Right Click Factory Image
    -Choose Mark Partition as Active

AS SOON AS YOUR PC REBOOTS IT WILL ENTER THE SYSTEM RECOVERY PROCESS SO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS BACKED UP. Your computer will be restored just how you got it. I hope this fixes anything. Good Luck.

I have been playing with my computer for the last couple of days and the only thing I didn't like was HP forgot to put a latch so the screen would actually close tight. Otherwise the machine I got is perfect. No flex and solid as a rock. The screen also has zero dead pixels.

I also just ordered the 2 year accidental complete care protection/2 year Lojack from Costco for $99.

I just bought a DV8T. I haven't received it yet, however, I am looking into a number of upgrade options.
How many slots are available and the maximum for DDR3? What is the speed of the stock DDR3 and am I able to upgrade to DDR3 PC3 12800 1600mhz?
I'm looking into Solid State Drives but I might hold off on that until prices drop and larger drives are available.

I second that , I think Intel is about to release 320GB version , so 160GB price might get lower . I have a second HDD caddy on order so I can have SSD as boot disk and 500GB as data .

Your remark doesn't make any sense. Except the iPhone sync issue (due to a BIOS/Chipset issue) what do any of the complaints have to do with the fact that this is a Core i7 system??? Is this the first laptop with an nVidia graphics chip? Or an LCD monitor, or a fingerprint reader? All these items, obviously, are on previous generation notebooks and issues with any of them cannot be blamed on this being a first i7-based system.

All too often nowadays, manufacturers are opting for low quality LCD's. It's really a shame. It's the main human-computer interface, and they cheap out on the LCD.

So, yes, people will come here to complain when something isn't up-to-snuff. They should. With as many notebooks as I lay my hands on in my business, I would swear that some go from a design on paper, to a boxed and shipped unit without a single person with half a brain using the darn thing and giving any feedback to help redesign it correctly! Do they not test these for weeks on end, testing for crashes, bugs, usability and quality issues before they start manufacturing them? Put them in the hands of gamers and let them give their feedback?

So, don't just "deal with it". It's not a toaster. Speak up with your wallet.

I have had the dv8 for two days and I really enjoy everything about it. I did notice one issue, however. When I first opened the lid, there was no plastic or styrofoam screen protector placed over the screen. The only covering was the plastic on the outside cover.

On the screen itself, there are small imprints which match the circle design just left of the mouse pad. I tried using water and a soft towell to scrub the imprint away, but its still there. I don't know if HP shipped other dv8's with no screen protection. I have owned a number of HP laptops and they have always been shipped with a plastic or usually thin styrofoam type cover.

Any ideas on how to remove the imprint? The other option is to have another one shipped, but I hate the hassle of going through that process. Thanks.

Interesting. I want to try using my Tunebite and see how many simultaneous songs I can recode. On my desktop i7 system, I can do the max (28 songs @ 2x speed) and the CPU is hardly breathing. On a standard Core2Duo system, I'm lucky if I get half that, and even then, it's 100% CPU!

I was hoping the mobile i7 would be like the desktop i7. As soon as I get a chance to open mine (Christmas day?), I'll try it out.

You must be reading more into it that what I meant. To sum it up, what I meant is this.......
This laptop packs a lot of new technology in it from the i7 mobile CPU, Windows 7 and the fact that it is a brand new model.
All I am saying is, this laptop along with others are going to have some problems here and there. I did not say that Win 7 was a culprit in any of the problems posted so far. But it is fair to say that the combination of a new operating system, new drivers and new hardware is a perfect recipe for a glitch here and there.

People should expect a few glitches is all I am saying. Does that make it right? No certainly not. But would you rather wait a few more months before you can buy this laptop? No you and all the others here would not like to wait, they want it now, perfect or not. Just like me!
So yes, I "deal with it" with the one and only glitch that I have so far that is a minor one at that.

I am not saying that no one has a right to complain. And I am not saying that every one should accept this unit with the problems they are having.
That is a decision that each person has to make.

I hope this clears up my true intentions of my original post for you.

It does. I was really addressing the mini-discussion that implied that people were whining about little issues, daily, and that we should all just deal with it. I have a beef, in particular, with some obvious shortcomings that have to do with manufacturers saving money and do affect what would otherwise be an awesome system (and I'm not specifically saying that about this system), and obvious lack of testing before manufacturing. Do you think HP knew about the iTunes sync problem? In all their testing, no one installed iTunes and hooked up an i Anything to it to test? If not, shame on them. If so, really shame on them for releasing it before fixing it!

I'm glad there is a fix though. I really got hung out to dry by Dell when I bought their XPS 730X Core i7 system. Lots of BIOS bugs, most USB related, and Dell swiftly discontinued the system (and support and upgrades for it) before fixing anything. So, yes, I'm a little sensitive about QC and testing!

Well here is where I stand on this same issue. A few years ago when EVGA released the 780i motherboard, I set out to build the baddest gaming rig on the planet on air cooling. I dumped thousands of $$ into it and I had the all new C2 Quad, all new 780i, all new 2x 8800 GTX in SLI, ect, ect.

I felt pretty ripped off that the 780i had so many issues with it and that I had spent all that money on a system that needed constant BIOS updates and tweaks just to be stable long enough to play for an hour. Not to mention the 2 sets of $300 ram it fried.

I finally got a stable system and had it overclocked to 3.8 GHz for 2 years before the CPU finally gave out.

Now I realize what I had was "Bleeding Edge". And this laptop is certainly not
"Bleeding Edge" but it is all fairly new technology.
I have learned to "deal with it" when it comes to new stuff like this. Doesn't mean I wouldn't be highly upset if I had some of the issues like the volume controls popping up, display driver issues and so on.
But then again, a lot of these issues I see are from people who did a fresh install of Windows 7.
Other than the Iphone sync problem and the volume controls popping up, I have not seen to many other issues with this laptop in it's factory supplied condition.

Well I would be suprised if the DV8t could match the heat output of my good old Dell E1705 with a core 2 T7200 and a Geforce 7950gtx. Hopefully the Cryo LX I have will keep the heat down.

Just an update. This $99 2-year ADP and Lojack protection does work! I got mine today and register with HP and Lojack. It's a great deal since these 2 packages cost $260 directly from HP and I saved almost 63%.

Edit: The Costco deal ends on 12/31/2009

Just found another problem with the hardware. Installed skype and tried video call. Worked once. Closed skype and reopened to make another call. Camera not found. Opened HP mediasmart camera software, camera not found. Restarted PC. Camera found. Opened Skype again to see if results repeated, again camera not found. So, I have had no success in getting reliability out of the web cam.

    Hey guys,

    Got mine today...AMAZING!
    Looks good, works great.
However, had the digitalpersona fingerprint reader working fine until I purchased an addon to lock files. Now the software doesn't recognize login screens and doesn't fill them out. all my login info is still in the software, I can see it, its just that nothing happens when I scan my finger to login.
    Any ideas...
    thanks
